I just wonder, the people with over 1000 series completed. Has it built up for years? Do they have a lot of free time? Or are there lists just stuffed with shorts and ova's?

straight up facts i bet some people consume so much anime they forget that its 7 in the morning and mom just came in your room to get ready for school and you get the belt for a week. at least thats what my mom did when i was a kid.

For me it's a bit of all of those. The free time was mostly just for 2017, but I have been watching anime for 7 years now and I watch a lot of shorts.

Just look at the year they joined or you can DM them and ask how long they’ve been watching anime.

I started this year and knocked out about 50 series

I'm coming up to my 3rd year on MAL now and I have 2400 completed rn. I think it's better to look at time spent rather than the number of anime completed, since you can significantly boost your numbers with MVs or ads or shorts. I have 961 (39% of my list) music videos, everything up to 2013 since I went on a long binge. All those MVs might have added around 2-3 days of watch time to my list. Compare that to something like DBS which would have taken the same amount of time to finish.

Please show your love for my Kiss x Sis manga review here. It will only take you 2 minutes of your time 🙏🙏
Check out my list of emojis you can copy and paste in the forums here. List will expand in the future.

Definitely a lot of free time, I won't ever have that many. I'm pretty picky with what I watch nowadays

For me all it took was just watching 2-6 episodes a day. I was born in 1996 so it really adds up over time. I also have a hobby of youtube, manga, and videogames on top of a job 32 hours/week. Watching anime with my bro is a tradition for me.

Beyond that, part of it could be skipping through filler and back track episodes. Also, ovas and movies boost your completed number.

Remember anime is for fun; not for raising your number higher than everyone else. If you really wanted that; completed anime can be easily faked. Bad goal imo.

Majority of the animes I've watched are an accumulation of basically having nothing better to do with my life. I used to watch anime actually pretty religiously when I was younger, but I've stopped watching it so often, since I work now and it's hard for me to get into new stuff.

I do have shorts and ova, according to malgraph I have 583 (tv), 293 (movie), 145 (ona), 101(ova), 80 special and 2 (music)

It did takes me around 5-6 years to watch it all

Here are the factors that maybe could come into play:

> Person has been watching since childhood and added their childhood anime series they watched to their list.

> Some people watch multiple series at once

> Some people were there when a lot of series first released so they watch every time a new episode is out. This sometimes means that you wait a week for another episode and watch another anime series on the side.

> Person considers themselves an anime critic and their goal is to watch as many anime and review them.

> Any free time a person may have is devoted to their hobby of watching anime. Just like how people watch Netflix, someone might have the same thing but with anime and so fills every gap of their free time.

> Some people skip sections of animes because of attention span issues or because some scenes can be boring including fillers in large series, this also makes for a quicker finish (No pun intended)

Anywho,
Maybe find one of those people and ask them directly;
i would actually like to know other people's perspective

Any, and/or all of the above.

I'm coming up on 8 years since I really got into anime.
When I was working 1st shift, I would easily spend 4-8 hours per day after work, even more on weekends watching anime.
I do have several singles/ovas/onas/shorts in my list, but not a majority.

Someone else pointed out looking at time spent. In my case, that wouldn't help.
When I first joined MAL, I was doing it wrong. I'd watch a whole series and just mark it as completed. I didn't register EACH episode, I just jumped to COMPLETED.
Turns out, that has thrown my "time spent" stat out of whack.
I can't be bothered to go through and re-do my entire list to make it accurate, and that's fine.. I'm more using my list just to track what I've watched rather than to post stats to impress others.
You're never too old to watch anime.
If I ever stop watching anime, check my pulse I'm likely dead.

I wake up with coffee & anime, I go to sleep with coffee & anime.

Sorry if my sarcasm is bad, it's not my first language.

Well many people here are also older. I am 26 years old and watch stuff after work, when i eat something or when i have a day off. I do this since 2008 and lot stuff collected. Sadly i cant write a Review or give a Score for everything i watched, because my Memories of many shows have to be updated.

Built up over the years for me, I have been watching anime since 2003 and have added all of it to my list. The only time I actually binge watched anime was during a summer vacation in college, never binged after that, I tend to not watch more than 3 episodes per day (or max-to-max 4 on weekends). Also MAL has separate entries for recaps and specials so the list looks longer than it actually is.

Obviously it was done over several years. I may have tons of free time, but there's no way I would have gone through over 900 series, movies and specials/OVA's in a short period of time without suffering from major burnout from anime....That shit would have driven me insane.

Dude...You know how burnt out I was from watching long ass series after sitting through all of Naruto and Shippuuden, Bleach, and however many other 100+ episode series I've seen? I'm surprised I even picked up My Hero Academia, Jojo and Black Clover.

I don’t understand either. I have a lot of free time but I still don’t have the energy to complete that much in a short amount of time. Plus watching several episodes of anime everyday can get tiring and I get distracted easily alongside other bad habits.

Well that's quiet dangerous. If you know your own skills than there is not much to worry. I didnt learn much back in my Work School and still finished it pretty well without spending time. But if you are lacking skills are get nervous, better stop watching AnimU and try to save ya ass. Otherwhise this will hunt you haha. After this you can watch tons of it again

If you start and complete a decent amount of anime every year you are naturally going to accumulate the numbers over time. If you have been watching anime for decades that makes it even more likely that you are going to hit 1,000+ completions if you have been consistent.

I suppose it is because they are people who have been watching anime for a long time, or maybe they are not interested in other means of entertainment other than anime.

I have no idea how I reached so many. 10 years ago I was seriously considering to stop watching anime.

Once you dont think about numbers and stats, time passes very fast. after reaching 500 anime, I stopped caring.

but in comparison, my anime list is relatively small since I mostly watch older series at a slow rate or prefer to read manga.

it has to do something with age=free time.

at least this is how i and my cousins and friends experience this.

in school life we have more free time and we spended most of this on video games and watching anime.
very often even the whole night.

today i don't have the energy and motivation after a long and exhausting day of work to watch even a episode of an anime.

1000 completed isn't that insane depending on what you watch. If you watch a lot of shorts, music videos, and extra content for other series like I do then I don't think it's *that* much.

Gonna say it builds up for years and decades. All it takes is consistency and it becomes just another habit after a while.
