| It depends on your definition of smart. The two protagonists in Clockwork Planet were deliberate written based on different views of what a genius is and have completely opposite personalities and talents. But you can't deny either one is a genius. Even if the they're somewhat lackluster. |

I dislike Johan Liebert being considered "intelligent" because we never see what he does, but only the results of his actions. That is not intelligent writing to me, because the tactics aren't shown, and anyone can write this or that using that exact method. "Oh, he manipulated said woman into committing suicide* Yeah, but how? What did he say, what did he do? The idea of IQ is completely arbitrary in fiction as well. I could write a character with 9001 IQ, but that doesn't tie into said character's actions. I am not quite sure what to make of Light Yagami or Lelouch. Has been a while, but Light's gamble that started the Yotsuba arc just seems like throwing chance to the wind, because there was no other way. |

| Implied brilliance or in the literary sense? As far as I'm concerned, the two protagonists from Senyuu (pre and post demon king arc) are the smartest characters in terms of implied brilliance (because hur hur travelling parallel realities and shit). As for literary, probably Light or Oreki. Other characters have plot convenience to make them look smart. |
