Great episode! Lovely story about Mai and Sayuri didn't expected that Mai was creating the Shadow Monsters her self and that they could interact with the physical world! Strange though, I do wonder what's next? The discovery of Shiori's illness ?

It was done much better in the 2006 version, but this was probably the best episode so far :)

To fight one's own inner demons - that is the true battle. Despite the excellent pacing and scenario for this episode regarding Mai and her past, I do have to complain that it was presented in an extremely vague way and they barely point out Mai's relationship with Yuuichi in the past. Is it because he left her without telling her? Why did she create those inner demons in the first place? I really doubt they will answer these in this series though, considering the fact that the ending hinted at Shiori's arc and most likely they will not touch on Mai any longer (with 5 episodes remaining, I doubt they have more time for Mai).
The episode's great, but fundamental problems plague not just this episode, but throughout the whole series so far. I really wonder how the 2006 version is superior in this aspect. Now for Shiori - I hope not for a tragic end.

I was expecting something more revealing about the demons. Too many questions left unanswered. It wasn't a satisfactory conclusion, somehow hasty.

That's some Mai leg fanservice at the stairs.

So the Mai arc finally resolved..

Shiori getting upset she does not have enough "chest" to wear a dress. That's a mean thing to say Yuichi.

The Mai route was weakest in the VN, and it remains flawed in it's animated form, with too many last minute revelations and plot twists. It's a shame, because I don't think she's a bad character herself, and the slice of life scenes were fun (moreso in the VN than here). Shiori's route was my second favourite after Ayu's (though I actually cried more during Makoto's route), so I'm more interested in seeing how well it's handled.

I like Mai in the classic compared to the remake. She is more approachable here, and she shows more emotions. I also like that Sayuri was on time to stop Mai from stabbing herself. It didn't make sense in the remake. All I got from her action is she felt so guilty for all the damage she caused, especially to Sayuri.

The main issue with this episode is they had to cram so much content in it. They had to skip a lot of content explaining why those demons were manifesting in that area.

While I love that Mai's issues seem to have been resolved, I'm still not clear how Yuuichi realised that it was only Mai's creation / imagination if he could feel attacked by it. Also, food wasted again....tsk

We'll move on to Shiori, but it looks like with just a cour, this version of Kanon cannot give sufficient attention to all the girls, but now I'm worried that Kanon (2006) wastes so much on slice of life moments.

I thought the school was haunted, but Mai was actually creating those monsters from her imagination??? She's got one powerful subconscious...

Yuuichi remembering that he played with her in the past is wild. He's clearly had an eventful childhood. If only he could remember it sooner.

That exchange between Yuuichi and Shiori about "next year" was way too somber. Yuuichi must continue being a good friend to her.
