Loulan being inexplicably alive really messed things up for me. The kids were pretty obvious and clearly planned, but her? It just so happened to have a happy ending. At least she sold the ornament before she left so that someday they might find out in an interesting way, which is cool.

And the kids woke up!! That's perfect when you thought they would die from the poison, though we didn't get a kiss from Jishi and Maomao lol they can't get a good timing. That ending... Loulan is still here under the name "Tamamo"... we'll see how it goes in the next season

last episode was not as bad as I thought. I was expecting them to ham-fist Maomao to like Jinshi in this last episode, but I wasn't expecting her to hate him until literally the last scene where they both appear. they also didn't butcher Shisui's character postmortem as much as I thought they would. it could have done without the sexual assault but overall not a terrible episode

That letter from Xiaolan made me emotional. Maomao's term has ended, so she went back to the Verdigris house. I hope she comes back to work at the palace, since I'm sure there are still a lot of mysteries that are yet to be solved. The thing regarding the foreign envoy was also not mentioned at all despite their involvement in the firearm workshop.

Shisui turned out to be alive, but I'm disappointed that she sold the hairpin. This is gonna sound evil but I kinda wish she'd stay dead for impact or sentimental reasons.

This season was fun, but I think I enjoyed the previous one just a little bit more. 9/10

Another very pleasant to watch season. Some episode slower than the others, but they served perfectly well the ambiance and the world building of this work. Hype to see Season 2.

So... Lolan is actually named Tamamo ? Curious to know more about here.

No, just the new name she took now that she's officially dead and leaving the country. And also a clever reference to Tamamo-no-Mae.

This might have been the cutest episode ever. I had not seen a female lead being so cold hearted towards the people around as much as maomao But Dear god girl that must not be good for you as a person and as character, I guess it makes her more tomboy ish with a bit of manly side to her. Compared to her counter part who shows ALOT of emotions and captures every man and woman in his visinity Jinshi, was so ADORABLE jeez JUST GET MARRIED already!

anyway 10/10 epsiode.
And the conclusion leaves room for more show time and also gives air for the characters to grow.

Honestly I would have never guess laulau? to be one the higher ups. and two episodes before this had some DRAMA maxing situation.

Highly recommended if you like thriller, mystery, drama, and mroe in a OLD medieval chinese setting. Honestly a breathe of fresh air with this anime.

JOLY GOOD SHOW.

Oh man... What a great ending. Shishui is still in fact alive. The children came back to life, and Jinshi's making moves. Overall, I feel like this season was an overall step-up from the last, and that's saying something. Rounding it up to yet another masterwork that I'll never forget.

You know what I will admit the romance between Maomao and Jinshi grew on me I no longer just tolerate it, I've come to like it. And I'm glad that kiss didn't happen, It's not yet the right time I think. Maomao's gotta want it too and not just be pressured into it. Anyway, why show Loulan selling Maomao's hairpin? Is this scene supposed to not just show her being alive but also how the hairpin would somehow find it's way back to the owner?

Oh damn, she’s alive?! Also, now that I’m a working adult in society with priorities and responsibilities I don’t think I have the time anymore to keep up with every “trending” anime so I should really limit it to series that I actually found enjoyable (2 eps rule), haha! Love anime but I’m finally understanding why older weebs always say they wish they had more time, lol

It was an intense story arc, but if you go into the drama route, commit it to the end.
The kids are alive (of course, it makes sense, it's even a good thing) but Luolan alive? That's too much. It loses the meaning of the many sacrifices just to let viewers happy that a relevant character is okay (I don't know if she'll be back in the story, I don't think so).

So, I'm a bit disappointed, also what about all these interruptions in the scenes between Jinshi and Maomao? It's a big cliché!

So, good season, two good story arcs, disappointing epilogue of this arc.

8/10.

I really loved this second season, even more so than the first and with such an ending I'm overjoyed to know there will be a sequel!

Really loved the further character development and overall progression of the story, just loved it!

It surprises me that not only did Ah Duo worked as a double but also showed up here again. S1 made it seem like Jinshi could never see her again but it's kinda anticlimactic for her to just randomly appear again...Also, how did Maomao end up as an apothecary in the pleasure district? I understand that she was no longer in the rear palace since she was only there because of the baby that is now already born, but wasn't she bought and working for Jinshi in the outer palace anyway? Or is that also nulled because Jinshi outed himself? I wonder how that works out next season...

In the end, Xiaolan leaving is more sad than anything else that happened this season, even Maomao shed a tear and we've literally never seen that happen even when she got her face wrecked in. Shisui surviving is another anti-climactic thing happening. I wonder if the author chose Tamamo as a reference to Tamamo no Mae. There was also the whole fox mask thing from the shrine festival.

Overall still a greatly enjoyable season, and the pacing was better than some of the seemingly "random" mysteries from S1, but some of the mysteries and logic from this season was just really weak compared to S1, including this climax arc for the season. On the other hand, we got some real progress with Loumen being back as well as a crown prince and empress.

Decent epilogue,

The resurrections of the kids was pretty obvious but it's cool to see especially for Kyou u,

The romance part with Jinshi is still pretty corny and awkward, while i like that we see his true self like Loulan i kinda miss their almost antagonistic and cold vibe sometime,

For Loulan the fact she's alive needs explanations, i don't expect less since this is a relatively realistic anime and it really kills last episode's ending that somehow she survived imo

Overall a decent season with pacing problem, a convulated for nothing lore introduced and a badly paced last arc, while i think season 1 had flaws it still is a much more memorable adaptation

So i'm giving a solid 7.5/10,

This still itches things no other animes can do, it looks fantastic, the openings and endings are great and it still is a great episodic detective anime even if i wish sometime that Maomao wasn't so good at deducing everything,

That and the fact some random girl is finally so implicated with the palace (met the emperor, his brother is in love with her, her father is the general) is also something not realistic,

I really liked how in the beginning she made marks just by her actions while being a nobody, i kinda miss that.

Will watch s3 either way.
@ropiel The hairpin Shisui sells had a bullet mark and it was placed in the area where she was shot, I guess we're not getting more explanation than that, but I may be wrong.

Cock-blocked once again but actually falling asleep on the Maomao lap pillow is more than enough. Better, even.

We did get the hint that Laolan/Shisui may have survived the gunshot and fall at the end of the previous episode with the glimmer the soldier saw in the bush. Thought that that was all were going to get regarding whether she lived or not before the season ended. But no they do us a solid and show us loud and clear that she is indeed alive and well.... and free. Was a bit sad to see her sell the hairpin when Maomao gave it to her telling her to give it back one day. But I guess to remain free, there would be no way for her to return and see Maomao again. Jinshi does say that he never does see her again. Idk how it goes later on, but perhaps she does stay 'dead', without anyone from before knowing that she was alive. Still, would've like to see her somehow get the hairpin to Maomao just to let her know she is okay, a secret they can keep between themselves. But who cares, she is alive, and of course so are the kids. Would've been sad to see her die for the sins of the father, and mother. What a great way to end the season.

Maybe it doesn't all come together into one single grand epic reveal, but it's far better than it being a slice-of-life-style, episodic-type of anime with standalone stories. Which, it could've very well been with a title like "Apothecary DIARIES". But no it's far, far from that. No episode is useless, even the ones that appear to be of the filler-kind. Every episode has something that connects it to another, and they all come together somehow, even events from the first season, which were referenced quite a bit over the course of this second season. Even with a lot wrapped up by the end here, there are probably more loose ends that will continue to be tied in upcoming seasons, all interwoven. Love that about this show, and made it really easy to keep watching the next episode. Yes I waited for this to finish airing to binge watch it straight through (which I'm going to be doing now with all anime I'm 99% sure to end up liking), and it was a quick and easy 24 episodes to get through over 2 days.

Overall it's on par with the first season, wouldn't say it's better or worse. It maintains its quality of writing and characters I believe. If we were to divide these 2 seasons into its 4 cours, the first half of season 1 is still the best for me. Maybe it's just the initial wow-factor of it all, idk. It's the opposite for this season 2 though, where the 2nd half I think most will agree is considerably better than its first half, with all its pieces set up and stuff coming together. Season 1 iirc had a similar layout where the first half was more setting up things and the second half had it all coming together, but for that season I think the build-up was stronger than the parts where things came together. It's kinda late I'm talking outta my ass here. Important thing is that this season is just as good as the first, just maybe in slightly different ways if at all.

Another 4 out of 5 stars, i.e. 8/10. Looking forward to season 3, but not DYING for it, they can take their time since this season ended in a very uplifting and satisfactory manner.
