Maomao had a truly game moment, that she was for a while doing expression while having a internal flashback that even Suirei decide to sit down and let happen.

I don't know why but, Loulan feels so beautiful always.

One of the few people that can make Lakan take down a lot of notches. Luomen

I get that Jinshi, Lakan and others made a few discoveries about Shishou and his house, but I don't think that's enough to publicly declare them traitors and raise an army against them.

All Jinshi knows is that the Northern faction smuggled Loulan out of the rear palace, re-built their fortress without telling anyone, and bought up a lot of iron. That is suspicious, but not definitive proof of a rebellion. And Jinshi doesn't know that Suiren was following Shishou's orders, he doesn't know that the missing eunuch is in fact Suiren, and he doesn't know that Suiren and Loulan are the ones that took Maomao. It's all very circumstantial and unprovable.

Accusing a powerful noble house of treason at this point may scare or anger the other noble houses, which would damage the reputation and legitimacy of the emperor.

Maybe Jinshi and others might still play this carefully, like gathering more evidence or setting traps to catch Shishou red-handed, but the end of this episode made it look like they were going to all-out war.

We'll have to see, but I got a bad feeling about this...

@perseii Restoring the abandoned fort without the emperor's permission is considered straight up treason here, no grey area there. Loulan just leaving the rear palace is a serious enough crime that would get her family punished by association as well.

It's an odd choice to put a captured (and presumably hostile) apothecary to work, especially on making a new and untested miracle medicine for the lady in charge. That's a great way to get yourself poisoned.

I kinda hope that's where this will go. Ordinarily that would be a death sentence for the apothecary too, but I suspect Loulan will back her up if her mother does get poisoned.

Hard to say what the involvement of Shishou is, since we haven't seen much of him. He's obviously in support of the rebellion, but is it his own idea or is he just following his wife? How would he react if she's gone?

@antonn It depends on how much autonomy the local lords are given in this world, I guess. I get that it could be very serious. Maybe the show could've hammered it home more, how dangerous and scandalous that was.

I also get that Luolan leaving without permission is a serious offense, but not sure if that counts as treason, punishable by execution of the entire clan.

I'm gonna wait and see how this plays out.

@Insanity_Monarch What annoys me is how she was betrayed and kidnapped by her friend and doesn't care at all about it. Her whole kidnapping thing is like ''oh, give me the recipe for the immortal medicine please please'' She doesn't care that everyone there might die if the emperor sends an army etc. Shisui could stab her in the back and Mao wouldn't care anyway XD
@Jollyne7 Lol I agree tho, if Mao Mao gets stabbed I imagine she'd just contemplate about her life being dispensable or something as a servant and a commoner. Just remember that scene with Jinshi in Season 1 where she requests Jinshi to get poisoned if she screws something up and have to be executed. She's like yeah sure, if I'm gonna die please make it via poison ahaha

Well, that's consistent with her portrayal since episode one of the series where she was kidnapped within minutes of the series' opening and extraordinarily nonchalant about it. She doesn't want to die - she has stated as much and has been shown to be fearful in the "gun literally pointed to her head" type of scenarios. And she doesn't want to be responsible for her word being used to inflict suffering - beating/injuries or execution on others. And would prefer to preserve the lives of other individuals or spare them suffering if she has any power or say over it; especially people she cares about to any extent (whether she openly admits it or not) - Luomen, her mother, Xiaolan, etc.

But otherwise she's unflappable because she recognizes it's a harsh world and brutal chaotic things are happening with misery and misfortune befalling randoms practically every second. And she is on paper a nobody, a servant girl with no political or legal power or authority. Better to keep your head down, go with the flow, and steel yourself internally not to get worked up over everything as she likely sees it as a pointless waste of energy and needlessly endangering herself.

If there is a rebellion and the emperor (or via Jinshi, whatever) orders the army to march on this fortress, burn it to the ground, and wipe everything in the vicinity off the map, not really her business or place to do anything about it except to do her best to avoid the crossfire when the literal arrows, bullets, or other projectiles go whizzing past her head. Maomao isn't just an herbalist nerd. She's intelligent and perceptive enough to recognize (and she always verbalizes this in her internal monologues) the extreme physical and social/societal limitations of her reach. She was probably correct that she likely would have been executed this episode under a guise of corporal punishment and then thrown into a ditch like garbage if Shisui/Loulan hadn't concocted a story on her behalf.

I think they did a really good job this episode with transferring the villain role association from Suirei to Shenmei and portraying Suirei as a character with a more complex/victimized situation/motivation, etc., whereas before she just came off as simply evil.

Loved seeing the Luomen-Lakan dynamic. Didn't expect Lakan to respect him so much since Luomen got to be close to/raise Maomao instead of him. Guessing Lakan simply credits him with taking care of his daughter for many years. Either way, I appreciate the wholesomeness Luomen has with everyone. Everybody just knows he's a good guy. Definitely a good choice for making Lakan remain very likable, too. Maomao's definitely got some good people in her corner, and you love to see it.

Overall, it feels like the author/screenwriters really stepped it up for the male side characters after Maomao got kidnapped and they had to carry more of the plot on their own. The final scene with Lakan and Jinshi was really good, and definitely got me pumped for Jinshi to go "rescue his girl."

A masterpiece of an episode. I already had my suspicions about how Loulan and Suirei were related, but I’m glad we finally got the full picture in this episode. So basically, they’re half-sisters, sharing the same father, Shishou. Suirei is the older sister, born earlier to Shishou’s ex-wife, who was a servant. Loulan was born later to Shenmei, which explains why Shenmei detests Suirei. In contrast, Shenmei’s daughter actually loves her big sister, a mix of pity and compassion, really. Putting the sisters aside, I’m really glad Loulan stepped in to save Maomao. Although Maomao is our adorable heroine, so I doubt anyone in the anime’s cast could realistically take her down anyway, haha.

Speaking of saving Maomao, a potion for immortality? Really, Shenmei? Like, I get that you're a bitter woman who got jealous of Shishou’s ex-wife, and you're still taking it out on Suirei even though her mom, your love rival, has been dead for ages, but come on. You seriously believe something like an immortality drug could be made by human hands? I mean, sure, the idea is cool, but seriously? Not sure if the psychopathic tart is just dumb or completely delusional. Still, I’m pretty hyped to see what Maomao does from here.

The tart and Maomao aside, that pre-ending scene was marvelous. The way Lakan just lashed out at Zuigetsu, spitting straight facts, gave me goosebumps. And when he realized that rage and anger weren’t the answer after being scolded by Luomen, and actually asked Zuigetsu respectfully, for the first time ever, to wake the heck up, chills, literal chills. Super excited for what’s coming next, can’t wait to see how things unfold, especially what happens to Maomao and how Zuigetsu will handle it all.

A noble daughter of son being assign to a palace role with restricted freedom in not just serving that role, as here a concubine, but is also a hostage for the behavior of the noble family. Hostage absconding is a prelude to rebellion and other treacheries.

So Shisui was Louran after all, i had my suspicions but it was pretty well hidden.
The thing is what she had done is basically treason which means things might not end well for her, let's hope i am wrong tho.
Her mother is a piece of work tho thinks she is above everyone else and that it gives her a reason to abuse others as she wants, hope she gets what she deserves.
Moamoa is also in a tough spot tho it seems her profession and knowledge saved her for the time being.
And it looks like Jinshi is making his move.
Didn't this reveal happened, like, 2 episodes ago? Why are some people getting suprised?

The story so far is great. I'm just getting irritated at Mao Mao at this point. I just can't stand her passiveness and lack of seriousness.
@Insanity_Monarch What do you want her to do? Cry? Try to escape when she doesn't have anyone to help and doesn't know exactly how to go back? Safest option for her is not to act

and when you don't have an option why not and do things you like to relieve stress?

She already figured out what is happening it is not like she wasn't thinking/serious at all

Chapter 44 fortress we started the chapter quite strong with shenmei showing her abuse towards suirei in addition to seeing how kyouu protected herself from shenmei in maomao's arms it was very nice to see their relationship that these two have finally the last secret was revealed that the ex-concubine loulan is actually shusui I felt very nal on maomao's part because I can't imagine the reaction she had when she found out about the deception of one of her most precious friends it's true even if it was maomao and her cold character that must have surprised her a little also more details of the theory of the hemisaria alya and her supposed pregnancy that gaoshun told maomao at the beginning of the season have been shown but now it has really been revealed that she was really escaping to talk to Mrs. shenmei about the feifas of her region finally we enter the fortress where many changes are coming after this I am glad to see maomao having a talk with suirei They are very good companions and the way Suirei cares for her is nice but it is sad to know more about Suirei's past and everything she had to suffer from Shenmei's abuse, the abuse of her and her mother, the fact that her name was taken away is already cruel but in that darkness appeared Shusui, Suirei's angel of light and the only one who treated her like her sister, their sisterly relationship is very nice, how Shusui takes care of Suirei is very nice, Maomao is already beginning to affirm her theory from the first chapters that perhaps Master Jinshi is the imperial younger brother, at first it seemed incoherent but now after the frog incident and that the only people who can enter and leave the palace as they want is the emperor and his relatives, she affirms the theory more along with what Suirei told Maomao about the verification of the castration (how she blushed was very funny) Maomao begins to suspect more and more that Jinshi may be a more important person but leaving that aside, Maomao in that at the moment I was thinking more about the treasures of books that the previous apothecary left, he looks clearly happy, besides that it has already started to snow which this detail is going to be very important in the following chapters but leaving all that aside, one of my favorite scenes in the manga was finally adapted, the discussion between lakan and jinshi or rather the fight between father-in-law and son-in-law, it is clearly seen that lakan is very desperate to find his precious daughter maomao, so much so that he only insulted jinshi, but thanks to lahan and gaoshun who brought luomen in time, one of the two people who can calm lakan in a long of seconds and finally what I was looking forward to, lakan's request to jinshi to accept his title as prince of the moon and mobilize the forbidden army to battle the rebellion of the shi clan because as we know only the emperor and his younger brother can do it, also how this is included is very surprising (it was very cute how luomen bowed his head) We end with Jinshi accepting and that's it.
(The next preview is coming with a lot of things)
The bag of silver and the fire that Loulan brings with it reveals the explosion that is going to happen. Also coming is the scene of Shenmei's fan stabbing Suirei :( Maomao's feast with the delicious snakes, among many more things. I'm looking forward to this chapter

MAN, I hope I'm not the only one who got completely and utterly blindsided by that Loulan reveal - because boy did I ever need Maomao to spell that out for me before it clicked, and when it did it knocked me flat on my backside! I recognized the shared features between Shisui and Loulan, but I had come to the conclusion that they were RELATIVES - not one and same.

Loulan walked in and started making things up to keep Maomao alive and my only reaction was surprise at how light and airy her voice was. Straight up went like:

Loulan: "Wait, mom. She can make an immortality drug."

Me: "Oh, hey! Thanks for the help I guess, Loulan. Was wondering when you'd pop in."

Maomao: "So Shisui was Loulan the whole time."

Me: "...................I'M SORRY, SHE'S WHO NOW!?!?!?"

The only problem with seeing things mostly from Maomao's perspective is that it is difficult to see how their arrived at the correct conclusion. I can only assume their spy network was crucial in unravelling the conspiracy.

Now it remains to be seen how Loulan might depose her mother and save her clan from certain annihilation, though it may be too late for that.

In retrospect I feel so incredibly stupid for not realizing that Shisui was Loulan. It makes so much sense based on what we've been told, but I just couldn't put it together until they literally dropped it on us. Hindsight is 20/20 I guess.

I guess it just goes to show the high level of craft that has gone into the writing of this story, where a plot twist leaves you the impression that it's the most obvious thing in the world, yet you still couldn't predict it until it was right in front of you.

So many loose threads have just been tied up into one neat bow, and the stuff it's leading up to seems more akin to a plot in Kingdom rather than Kusuriya. This story just keeps surprising you and upping its stakes in ways that makes it always feel fresh and unpredictable.

@Gingerswag_7 Probably because you didn't know it was her when reading it the first time around. As someone who's an anime only watcher of this show, I did not manage to piece together that Shisui and Loulan were the same person until they actually revealed it, even if it does seem obvious in retrospect.

It's time for Jinshi (or should I say Ka Zuigetsu) to finally take action against the Shi clan's rebellion. They've already tried to assassinate him twice and kidnapped his beloved Maomao, so hopefully he shows them no mercy.

On a lighter note, I found it funny how flustered Lakan was with Luomen. Those two make quite the pair, nice to see them both looking out for their daughter.

Sooo the reason she brought her with her was because her mom wanted a new apothacary because the last one died trying to make an immortality potion...so she wants Maomao to die when her mom gets made at her for failing?
Seems like a real stretch to get this whole storyline going. Also if revolution was the end game she already had someone (2 people actually) on the inside who could kill the emperor why not just have Shisui (or her sister) take him out. Meh I hope this isn't going to start going down hill.

What exactly do you expect her to do? The most she could do is potentially poison a few people before being killed herself. The smartest thing she can do is just to remain quiet and obedient on the surface, wait for the battle to (optimistically) reach the fortress, hope imperial soldiers breach its walls, and only then try to escape amidst the confusion.

Not much to do right now. Her and the lives of everyone else there are currently at the mercy and only allowed to continue at the discretion of a very ruthless and vindictive woman, and no else there has the authority to stop or overrule her whims.

He's his biological uncle. He's his father's brother. I think that was briefly detailed toward the end of season one around when Lakan's backstory was being given. His father was ordering him to be sent abroad for studies as a replacement for Luomen after Luomen had been expelled from the rear palace. It was mentioned then that he saw his uncle as a great man he looked up to.

It's also why Luomen is Maomao's great uncle (her father's uncle), which she mentioned a few episodes ago (in her head, internally) after he returned to the rear palace, when Yinghua and the other ladies-in-waiting were grilling her.
