Don't get me wrong, the visuals look good, and the animation is flashy and smooth when it wants to be, but the plot and writing is beyond average.
The premise is a very standard small heroic group of specialists taking on an impossible task, but even if this is done it usually has a reason for why it has to be a small group of specialists. Here it basically makes no sense, as every person in the world should want to find the guy.

Even if they find a counter to the toxin, how would they even distribute it in less than a month?
Even if countries don't take the threat seriously, shouldn't there be agencies moving around in thousands, if not more? Like the bunker should have been ransacked minutes after the announcement, given how obvious a lead that was.
Nothing in this writing makes any sense. Giving a misfit band of criminals an expensive looking headquarters and gear?

This isn't really a plot hole, more like is there anything but hole in this plot?

Maybe I will watch it for the animation, but the rest makes it hard to enjoy even that.

It’s anime… it ain’t that deep.

We are only 2 episodes in so I’m guessing that more people and countries will get involved. As for the average people, by the scenes of talk shows and stuff, it seems like people have just accepted that they will die soon. Also, the raid on the bunker happened within a day or two of the announcement, since most of the people who were there are not from Japan, take into account travel time and stuff.

If you’ve started a movie, you aren’t going to watch the first 20 minutes and stop, saying “There’s so many plot holes” now are you…

With Watanabe’s work, it’s more about the vibe then the plot anyway.

Bashing the plot this hard after just two episodes makes you look completely clueless. It’s like you’ve never seen a story unfold in your life. Ever heard of buildup or pacing? Maybe try using your brain before spewing nonsense.

Please wait for the other episodes to come out before passing judgement. Hell, just wait for the next one and apply the 3-episode rule, if you’ll find disappointing, just don’t watch it. But it well as may pique your interest of the series.

I agree. I was a bit let town from episode 1 only. I had high hopes but yupp, the story is average. the animation is good tho. I guess I'll give this the 4 episode try but I totally agree with u, most of it just comes off as half ass and its not engaging as much as u had hoped.

Hot damn.

So we have a middle aged moron who doesn’t have the slightest clue on what they’re talking about. Definitely not the sharpest tool in the shed, that’s for sure.

That makes this thread even more hilarious.

Beeing disappointed is fine.

I just feel like, for some reason, this Show gets picked apart, where other Anime get a pass when it comes to some of the hyper logical analysis people do, on here.

I think you would enjoy this way more if you'd just suspend your disbelief a bit.

To your point of this show being picked apart where other anime get a pass is the expectations put on it because it’s from Shinichirō Watanabe. Which I think is a bit ridiculous to do after only 2 episodes but patience is an ancient concept nowadays πŸ˜‚

I agree. Can't fix boring and this show has it plastered all over it.

To everyone that says, "Stop being so negative it's only 2 episodes in!" or "All these questions will be answered as the show goes on".... idc... it's boring and Idc to keep watching to find out. VAs sound bored out of their minds too.

Animation is good when it wants to be and the music is great. That's about it, not much to talk about honestly.

Your plot hole only exist if you assume they live in the same world we do which they dont the world is futuristic with very advanced technology also your assuming the cure will come in a pill form and wont be the drugs properties being rewritten again such as the initial 3 year period before effects their are many ways this can be done being only two episodes in and being the big problem of the show its ridiculous to say this is a plot hole at this point in the story its just an unsolved problem. This is how you add stakes to the world not a plot hole i fear your comprehension skills are severely lacking.

The first two episodes have been really bad, if the third doesn't vastly improve, then I don't see a point in continuing when the series is also very short.

This comment has me baffled, you think this story isn't cookie cutter?
There are probably as many stories with this premise as there are isekais, but somehow this isn't cookie cutter?

I still don't understand your criticism. 2 episodes isn't enough to understand the full story and characters building. the beginning is promising to me but probably I can come to a conclusion after 6 episodes at least.

@zwolf12

how many anime come out per season that is about a mystery angle involving criminals joining together to look for a pharma genius selling a human killing drug?

Now how many anime come out per season that is about some male teenager living in an alternate fantasy world trying to get stronger and get resources (isekai)? How many anime come out per season that is about a school romance between teens? How many anime come out per season that is about teenagers fighting monsters or demons or other people with the sole purpose to get stronger?

Y'all dickride all these shounen/isekai/shoujo ass stories that are always the same fucking thing everytime but wanna call an original anime like Lazarus repetitive when we are lucky to even get 1 or 2 of these kinds of shows a year. Make it make sense.

I see where you are coming from, you took the theme as a very narrow theme and limited your view about it to anime, while I was looking at the premise from a broader perspective of a 'band of misfits' genre, which happens to be a very usual premise for a lot of media, not just anime.

But even in anime, the whole band of misfits premise is incredibly common and not what I would describe as 'fresh'.

@zwolf12 I think its very disingenuous to just reduce this story down to a typical "band of misfits" story. You can do that with a lot of original and groundbreaking work in anime and movies if you really wanted to. 2001 a space oddysey can be reduced to a typical AI goes berserk story, Cowboy Bebop can be reduced to a band of misfits story, Neon Genesis Evangelion can be reduced to another wimpy MC mecha story, etc.

Not that I am saying Lazarus is as groundbreaking as those works but I have a huge problem with how people consistently hold original works to such scrutiny. Y'all wanna complain endlessly about how this is derivative of other works yet this site gives the most repetitive and/or boring dogshit like Solo Levelling or Bleach or Demon Slayer high ratings. It's not like this is an anime only complaint either. It's true in every visual artform. Original works like A Cure for Wellness or The Creator flop and get bad reviews with people complaining about how they are derivative yet praise Star Wars Force Awakens which is literally just copying A New Hope or praise a Marvel/DC movie which is the 50th fuckin same story in those franchises.

Yeah, this has familiar elements. A band of cool misfits. Sure. But again, its quite rare you get an anime with this premise. Sure, there have been works in the past that have similarities to this. But I can name literally 20-30 anime a year that are like Solo Leveling or Demon Slayer. I can name like 50 anime a year that are like HoriMiya. I couldn't even name 2 anime this year that are going to be like Lazarus though. So, why is it that we hate on Lazarus for which theres barely anything like it out there but dickride these other anime that are dime a dozen? It's a severe issue with society in general like I said because it extends past anime but I am sick of people constantly complaining about the lack of original works and then when they come out, we all wanna hate on them extra hard.

Graphics, animations, character movements, script - everything is very secondary. One big disappointment.
Rewatch the first episode of Cowboy Bebop or Samurai Champloo, they were made by completely different authors.

Agree... nothing special so far, no likeable or interesting characters, just sitting around talking for 80% of the episodes follow by few minutes of nice animation... also the way they found Bilinda in ep3 is the most convenient plot progression I have ever seen... just saying name in front of group of strangers and luckily they knew her... else the story would end right there with them 2 dying.

Most of the Isekai-Narou anime are of higher quality than Lazarus.
This is to be expected as they are anime adaptations of commercially successful original works.
Works like Lazarus would not be as well received as Isekai-Narou if they were released as novels.

I don't get why everyone's shitting on you for this take @zwolf12. You're completely right. The show feels woefully underdeveloped in terms of its writing. And yes, while I get that there's more episodes left to flesh out all of the details, that doesn't mean Lazarus is just immune to criticism. Even if they somehow come in and explain everythng sufficently in the next few episodes, the shwo still failed to properly set up the exposition and plot hook. And, tbh, I don't expect them to do this, just judging by this most recent episode with its slow pacing and lack of real plot progression.

I made a post about this show earlier this season and how it felt like a side project for MAPPA to test out movement choreography more than an actual passion project of theirs. I think the myrriad of plot issues you point out proves that point.

@EcchiGodMamster I exaggerated, but you can see that every mediocre anime is high in the ranking at first (in seasonal anime). After the season ends the real gems start to go high, for example Chi. from past season.
