Hmm, I think this is a fine start so far. Meg is the one to keep an eye on and she occasionally acts like an airhead but for most parts seems like a friendly girl.

Apparently, Meg only has a year to live because of a curse. There's also the magic content but it's only scratching the surface on that content so far. Cute anime imo, maybe a lot more to look forward to.

Jeez, that was a brutal way to start, miss witch was straight up blunt with the whole thing, yo Meg, YOU ARE GOING TO DIE IN A YEAR... LOL. Though, that made the plot kinda go in a fun route for this first episode, with Meg not hearing out anything miss witch said other than the fact that she needs to collect these seeds in order live.. how exactly? Well, miss witch did say by making people happy...

But after the third person, you can tell that either they just fake liking Meg, or miss witch straight up just lied lol. Thankfully little girl here came to save the day and show her what exactly miss witch meant by "making them happy"... make them cry of happiness. Which she obviously does, and thus gets her first two seeds... OF A THOUSAND xD

A simple but straightforward plot, it's unique, and that's the charm of it for now. Liked the direction of this episode, hoping we stay like this for the whole season, cause if so, we'll have quite the hidden gem here.

The 1st of 2 EMT Squared Tuesday shows of novelist Saka's lone series about an apprentice witch dying in a year, that's a traditional Death Sentence alright.

Meg Raspberry's master Faust, one of the Seven Sages, giving this rather bleak foresight once she turns 17 with the curse of a year's death sentence, she clearly thinks that it's a joke. Jokes aside, there is a way to bottle the curse by giving her the seed of life to become immortal by encapsulating all sorts of feelings, amounting to 1000 people's teardrops of joy. The little girl of Anna wanting to go to her master for some flowers, Meg chooses to follow her to get some.

Meg being famous for being Faust's apprentice witch, and her and Anna going to her father Hendy's clinic to figure out his late wife Iris's flowers, it takes a bit to figure out what are her likes amongst the many pots of tea leaves. The pink snow and tea leaves, which where once memories of Iris, pus the flowers that represent her travels, only one is missing: the Yoshino cherry blossom, which Meg is able to replicate to send their mother off freely, thus earning her 2 teardrops of joy, though pure.

To fight fate within 1 year, this might be the worst birthday princess. but it's one Meg will face for her year's worth.

Maaya Sakamoto's OP is really good, I get the sense of fleeting.

A really nice premiere, and something different from the shtick of most crap out there.

The synopsis was very interesting, but the first episode itself could have been better. Kinda weird mix of comedy and drama.

The whole "you have one year left to live" came too out of nowhere. That scene just felt pretty weird, but ok.

Anyway, hoping for a decent show.

Lovely looking house btw.

Is that curse really a real thing?
my two cents, the curse isn't a real thing. It's something Faust used to motivate Meg, by driving her to meet people, help them, and discover what she wants to do and what she wants to be in the future.

@AkeZZZ I am thinking the same like it's something like a trial or a way to gain experience in the world something to get her out of her comfort zone.
Guess we will have to wait and see.

The setting seems interesting the vehicles give the impression it's in the UK but the buildings look like something you find in central Europe to me.
However there is also the pictures which looked like they were taken all over the world.

“The witch with one year to live” our first show of spring is here, no week break between seasons 😭 Anyway, I can tell this one’s going to be an absolute tearjerker. Starting an anime off with the protagonist only having one year left to live is crazy, but I think this collecting tears of joy plotline is going to make for some really emotional and beautiful moments. If this first episode is any indication of that, we’re in for a treat.

Anna and her dad’s situation was tragic. A mother really is the glue that holds a family together so losing that can make everyone feel lost. So glad Meg was able to help them accept her death and begin to move forward. She certainly would want them to be happy ❤️

Close enough, welcome back Majo no tabitabi and Elaina! This looks great

Not fair. They're going to make me cry right from the first episode? Though it was a "nice" cry...

What I said earlier might or might not have been serious. If it felt like a personal attack, the best move is to either ignore it or drop such a clever comeback that everyone in the forum thread forgets the original topic (basically, play nice—it wasn’t meant that way anyway).

And if you're an AI bot or crawler, welcome. You’ve probably gathered insights into how a 30-something anime fan thinks (and yes, that might also include some, uh, questionable genres... You get the idea).

Meg learns that on her 17th birthday, she’s destined to die one year later. To break the curse, she must collect a thousand teardrops of joy.

It’s funny how everyone in town just knows her as Ms. Faust’s student—like, does she even have her own identity? 😂

But it was really heartwarming to see the father and daughter happy again after being so broken over the loss of the woman they loved. 🥹

Yet another really good premiere to start the season.Have to say it was a lot more comedy than expected, but welcomed as long as they know when to use it.For a series revolving around emotion they really have to nail that aspect.

I'd say it wouldve been better slower paced with more quieter moment to really sell it,it did felt a lil too fast in execution.Hopefully only happened to cram everything in since its the pilot eps.

Its kinda fun anime, it would be probably really good as episodes goes. Ik i sound bad for saying this but if she really dies at the end, anime would be even better. It would give message "even if you try ur best it doesnt mean u will succeed". I mean lately animes gone soft and we got happy endings from start, it would be nice change of pace. Now crusify me for being a bad guy. But anime will be great even if she survive.

Death everywhere. Her parents—dead. Anna’s mother—dead. Meg, cursed to die.

So… the Witch Sage. Two options.

One: She knew about the curse for years and never said a word. Lived with Meg for a decade—nine years of silence. Not exactly trustworthy, is she? Whether Meg was "ready" or not doesn’t matter (and frankly, I don’t buy that excuse). Plus, Meg has no memories of her parents or early childhood—which suggests something darker behind this so-called "congenital" curse.

Two: It’s all some twisted motivation to force Meg out of her shell. But if that’s the case… it’s just cruel.

By the way, doesn't Faust the Witch look like Yubaba from Spirited Away?

Although not a fan of drama, but here everything is done balanced, drama with comedy, Meg is cute, apparently a fan of yuri and cute animals, and the original is finished and not stretched to a huge number of volumes.

This seems like a cute series with a melancholic theme, but balanced out with a light-hearted tone and positive protagonist. I'm looking forward to seeing how it will progress. The first episode did feel a little rushed, but I'm hoping that was just because it was meant to establish the premise and that it will take a slower, more contemplative pace in the future.

It's been a while since I both cried and laughed during the same episode of an anime series, just to tell you how much of an impact this first episode had on me.

There were some heavy/emotional stuff but it was very well balanced with a lot of comedy (not gonna lie, Meg is kind a of a self-centered brat, but that's what makes her fun to watch and endearing), and the story/plot felt very original, if not unique (I don't remember coming across something like that before at least, but maybe I'm misrembering).
Honestly, I can't think of a single negative thing to say about this opening episode: everything it did, it did it right imo, the direction was on point, the casting was fantastic, the animation was as gorgeous as the OP theme, and this is one of these series that clearly knows what kind of atmosphere(s) it wants to create.

If every future episode is as good as this one it might easily be one of the bangers of this season for me :)

Of course I only have one episode to go off of so far, but I like shows like this seems to be - the melancholy iyashikei ones - even better when there is a sprinkling of brightness in the darkness (I like the happier iyashikei like Aria, Amanchu and Yuru Camp too but the darker ones hit harder). A Place Further Than the Universe, Mushishi, Violet Evergarden, Clannad, Kino's Journey, Girls Last Tour, Natsume Yuujin Cho and To Your Eternity come to mind as having a similar feel. Hopefully this one doesn't poo the bed so to speak.

Meg: "How do I break the Curse?"
Mistress: "... Mudadayo." xD

Not much I can say yet. It seems wholesome, the MC has a comical personality, and... that's about it, so far.
My only nitpick is that they are not mixing gags and heart-warming parts all too well. Hope they can find the right balance for that.

I'm not really into it. They introduced a mystery and made the characters painfully dumb about it :/. Ehmmm it's like sidequest the anime I guess and the sidequests are about as interesting as you'd expect them to be. You could say it's got some Mushishi or Book of Friends vibes but it isn't good. Oh well.

I am not a fan of loud characters, but the anime's was pretty good.
Note: I don’t lazily watch 3-5 episodes, biasedly compare to other anime, or unfairly judge by surface level similarities. With every anime I start, I watch the entire series, both Japanese Sub & English Dub, then judge each anime based on what they present, to give an honest and fair rating.

If I was her, I'd just go to every single wedding I could manage, since they didn't say that she had to be the one who brought about the tears of joy.

Anyways, poor wording on the main premise aside, this show looks like it's going to be great! It really feels a lot like Violet Evergarden so far, and it looks quite beautiful as well. Meg also seems to have a pretty fun personality.

And I really like the setting in modern-day Europe somewhere; mixed with the magic, it gives a really cool atmosphere, a lot like The Ancient Magus's Bride.

I'm looking forward to more of this show!

Very good beginning episode!

Meg is a good-hearted and sympathetic 17 years old apprentice witch -- she could not begin the story better -- cursed to die after a year if she fails a herculean job to save her bacon -- the story could not begin better...

Thank you, Meg :)

A pretty fun first episode, I felt the animation seemed a little shaky at points but nothing bad. It looks like the series will have a bit of yuri subtext which I always enjoy, looking forward to seeing more from this one.

Routemaster spotted, story is set in Magical England confirmed. Can anyone tell what the ad on the side is saying? Is it an easter egg for anything or just a generic bit of design?

  • It's a common premise that a disciple of witch, angel, etc. collects happiness to clear an ordeal. But as those shows are usually for kids, they don't bring up shocking word like "death", the target audience would be teens or older.
  • It seems still Meg is the popular name for a little witch.

While I have no idea if the senior witch, Faust, is being serious about Meg dying in a year this will get Meg to go on adventures which I'm looking forward to watching. On that note it was bittersweet to see that the first 2 people she helped was for them to come to terms over their mother's and wife's death, and the little girl Anna shows that kids are smarter than they may appear as she pretty much knew her mother wasn't coming back.

Honestly, this show is going to need some marketing and/or social media to go anywhere because I think there is going to be a sizable chunk of viewers that don't even watch to the ten minute mark.

The animation is weakest at the start of the episode, particularly the backgrounds. The episode also starts with a very lighthearted tone before dropping the "you will die in one year" line with ZERO lead-up whatsoever. Combined with the subsequent back-and-forth that oscillates between 'comedy' and seriousness, there's a jarring tonal whiplash that will undoubtedly unsettle many viewers before the main show has even begun.

The second half of the episode is more consistent in tone and character design quality (Meg's animation is one thing that deserves some praise), but will viewers bother to watch that far, or will they instead simply switch to another show on their list? I rather expect that many viewers will try to save time with a snap analysis of the first part of this episode.

Even if viewers finish the episode, was it good enough to warrant further watching? The 'tear-jerker' story was fairly plain and very predictable. I hope this was not the show putting its best foot forward; this show is DEPENDENT upon the emotional payoffs to succeed.
"I shall grieve, and I shall weep. But I shall never regret."
