For an episode that's spent watching two people seat at a table, it's amazing how gripping and visually interesting it is.

What's more, I'm very glad to finally bear witness to the full scope of Osanai's wolf nature. I never suspected any of what was revealed here! It was thrilling to discover how meticulously everything had been planned out. I feel a little slighted on Kobato's behalf, but I'm too impressed by Osanai to really care.

Kobato was racking her brain trying to figure out Osanai's plan.
Osani: This melon is so good.

Osanai is too dangerous and vengeful, all while hiding behind a mask of being a sweet and innocent girl who wouldn't hurt anyone. She tracked down the guy who stole her bike and ruined her cakes, leading to his license being suspended and him being charged with theft. She even chased after the couple who splashed her with water. As for Kobato, who only stole a cake, she forced him to run errands for her.

Osanai is definitely not someone you'd want to cross paths with.

Poor dude from the cooking club who put some hot sauce into the cakes 3 episodes ago, he's gonna be found dead before the end of the holidays lmao

Holy fuck, I don't even know what to say, all I know is Osanai is scares me, but man is she cute.

There are some people who guessed Osanai did all this just so Isawa gets a heavier sentence, props to you all. On that note, Jesus Christ, Osanai.

Osanai just enjoying that parfait while Kobato was out here stressing (probably enjoying it) is crazy. Definitely felt the aura around Osanai change when she finished that parfait lmao.

Immediately realized it was Sanae when Kobato said Osanai had an insider, damn, everyone was basically in the hands of Osanai, including the Milk Carton Criminal.

Fuck, I hope we get more seasons so bad.

Kobato: "I can fix her."
Osanai: "I can manipulate him."

Damn this series got really dark really quick. Remember when it was about figuring out how to make a delicious cup of hot chocolate? Yeah, me neither. Instead it's about a manipulative sociopath using her best friend in a plot to trick an old enemy into committing a crime, and further frame her for crimes she never committed. She basically ruined this girl's entire life for petty revenge. And it's not like Iwami was completely innocent, but did she really deserve all of it? I'm not so sure.

I thought it was going to be a chill series about solving the kinds of mysteries your mom would be keeping from an 8-year-old you, like the fact Santa doesn't exist. Man, they grow up so fast...

I'm not fond of these pretentious shows where suddenly a lot of previous "clues" are revealed but make absolutely no sense and suddenly someone is a genius, plot armors to the fullest.

Boy, how simple can be a whole episode being scened with them in the same room, chatting.
Nevertheless this was by far the best anime episode I’ve seen this year so far.
Very intriguing and articulated yet funny anda kawaii.

This show will probably be getting a rate 10 from myself (I only rate’m after finish watching).

Who knew such evil was lurking behind such pretty eyes.. absolute mind fuck of an episode. There’s nothing normal about Kobato and Osanai and there never will be. To think she planned her entire kidnapping to get Isawa arrested is some dastardly shit. Bravo writing.

So every thing that they’ve done this summer including the desert tour was meticulously planned out by Osanai to get the optimal conditions for the kidnapping.. I can’t even imagine the level of planning that had to go into that and props to the author for even coming up with this. I thought it was weird that Osanai wanted Kobato to do the desert tour, but never would’ve guessed this was the reason.

Getting Sanae indebted to her and having her pull the strings from inside the group is also crazy. You almost wonder if Osanai had been planning this since middle school lmao.

And she would’ve gotten away with it too if it wasn’t for that meddling mom of hers πŸ˜‚. Mom letting the fact that Osanai had been up late at night on the phone was the final nail in the coffin, guess there’s just only so many variables you can account for. Chilling end to the episode tho, almost scared of Osanai now.

Cinematography and scene composition in this episode was also incredible. For 25 minutes of Kobato and Osanai sitting at a table it went by in a flash because of the direction and buildup to her confession.

I completely agree with you. Osanai is just eyes of a puppy, but the mind of a wolf. She can hold the grudges very tight to her hearth. I can only imagine what would had happened to the guy who stole her bike, if she have had the chance to take vengeance.

I kinda feel sorry for all those people complaining about the show being only about characters going around and eating sweets and dropping the show because of that.
Mystery needs time to develop so it was obvious that there's either something bigger going on in the background, hidden behind all those silly sweets-related mystery solving or... it will really just be slice of life series with characters playing detectives to solve silly mysteries. I wasn't 100% on this but the former had way higher probability of being true than the latter. Osanai was suspicious to me every since her revenge for stealing her bike and even more so after she roped MC into their summer sweet journey (which IMO she also did purposely).

Man, I just love when episodes themselves are little puzzles on their own that eventually come together as a bigger puzzle. It's so satisfying.

isn't what Osanai did a crime?
@anikevin This is the first thought that popped into my mind too! I'm not saying that girl didn't deserve to get arrested for the crimes she DID do but it's def a crime to set her up for false extra charges of asking for ransom too..... I think it's wrong of Osanai but it's not gonna stop me from watching cause I like this author LOL

I rated this episode "Loved It". But only because that is the highest rating. All thru the series, so far, I've been liking Kobato and Osanai's relationship more and more. Two people with exceptional minds helping each other and enjoying time together.
But the conversation at the end turned me 180. My intuition now is that they would ruin each other.
Well, one more ep. to go. How will this story turn out?

P.S I still find it dumb how Osanai put herself in danger there. She also got lucky with coded message which is stupid. Like, relying on luck??? What if she failed to send the text? What if Isawa snapped and stabbed her to death? What if Isawa gets madder and will plot her revenge on Osanai whenever she gets out of jail? I mean, sure, she assaulted and kidnapped Osanai regardless of Osanai wanting the kidnapping to happen, but the whole fake ransom demand is what makes it unfair and cruel. Isawa will find out she was framed, so who will she blame? - Osanai. So, you either pray Isawa rehabilitates in prison, or constantly watch your back after 5-15 years since Isawa may be there ready to stab you to death in revenge.

With the tape recorder used for the ransom call and the discussion they had about the infeasibility of sneaking a long text, the show very clearly implies that Osanai did these things BEFORE her kidnapping. Since she knew when it was going to happen and where she was being taken, she made the ransom call and texted Kobato before she was even kidnapped. She had the bag featuring that voice changer already with her and thus it was left in the backseat. This also explains why the girls had seemingly only just started berating Osanai when Kobato got there, rather than having lots of time between the ransom call and his arrival.

Damn, that twist in the end! Staging one's own kidnapping to make sure she got hold of everyone is an insane scheme, and she was leading our main character to the truth too, that's boss level stuff, yo.

Definitely one of the better episodes of the series, imo. There were a couple other simply dialogue heavy mysteries in previous episodes and I found them to be the weakest of the series thus far but this one turned it around. Curious to see what the next and final episode will be about ~

Absorbing episode, even when the two of them are sitting at a table and talking the whole way through.

While interesting, I'm finding myself liking Osanai less now, with her blatant, premeditated manipulation of Kobato, her nonchalant attitude towards Kobato's accusations and hurt feelings, her audacity to tear up about her situation and her smug look when she revealed her plan.

I can't imagine liking any outcome other than Kobato just walking away from Osanai, but I'm still interested to see where the show takes these two.

Kobato: "Was being caught part of your plan?"

Osanai: "Of course."

The book this episode was based on was first published in 2006. Interesting that the author of Hyouka managed to write into his book a plot point of a major character getting captured on purpose before The Dark Knight made it trendy in mainstream media.

Some things were predictable, some were not.

Like, to me it was obvious Osanai wanted to be kidnapped that day, but I never thought she planned it so early on or that her plan intended to manipulate Kobato.

So what the actual F happened between Osanai and Isawa??? "She's a bad girl" - That's it? For Osanai to want her to get prison time this badly, I suppose Isawa must've done some terrible shit, no?

As I suspected, Isawa is a juvenile so she won't be punished as hard as an adult would, but still, the punishment is still severe. I did some basic research and:

In Japan, a juvenile convicted of a serious offense like ransom kidnapping might face 5 to 15 years of imprisonment, depending on the level of harm involved and the court's discretion.
For less severe cases (e.g., kidnapping without serious harm to the victim), the sentence might be closer to the 3 to 5-year range. This can be reduced further due to certain circumstances.

Basically, Osanai made sure Isawa would get jail time!

I find it hard to sympathize with Osanai without knowing if Isawa deserved it. Without context it indeed seems like Isawa is the victim (as she claimed when arrested) and now she'll get punished even harder for something she didn't do! Hopefully Osanai explains it.

@Ckea I know that's probably his most iconic line from the show, but Sherlock really does display way more symptoms of psychopathy than sociopathy. Whether that line is bad writing or something Sherlock knows isn't true but uses as an excuse for his behaviour could be debated.

By the same token Yuki and Jougorou's behaviour is even more pyschopathic than Sherlock's is, in particular their whole pretending to be ordinary act.

But then again when most writers are writing characters with antisocial personality disorders I don't think they're always focused on making sure they fit neatly into a certain diagnosis.

I can't believe the heroine would be so psychotic...
Good luck MC, taming that wild beast.

Whether it's a crime or not.
It's rather evil.

The MC is more likely a detective freak, not a psychopath like the girl.
It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines
and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it,
is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service.
