@ShatteredSans for me him being insufferable was what made him good, the show is just "insufferable people (or aliens) being insufferable to other insufferable people (or aliens)" and that's why it's funny, also there is development in him accepting his feelings towards Lum (not the best development but still) and for me the ending was more like them admitting their feelings in their own annoying way
| @Guilmon1 sure, but I think he was easily the most insufferable member of the cast. They all have their issues, Mendo is an idiot, Ryunosuke is easily irritable and aggressive, Ran is obsessed with Rei, but none of their gimmicks are as annoying as Ataru, who just seems entirely incapable of not cheating, because he has no standards and will go after literally any woman who exists. It's no wonder the show starts with Shinobu (one of the few mostly reasonable and sane characters in the show) dumping him. Sure, there's some development with him accepting his feelings towards Lum, but it happens like 2 or 3 times, and each time it ultimately ends up meaning nothing, because he always just goes back to ignoring and cheating on her the next chance he gets. |
| Gonna be honest, Hei in Darker than Black. He's just the usual "I am expressionless and very badass" type of character and get's relegated to a bum who gave up all hope later in the show. |

| @Piromysl I also do think that Makoto was a good protagonist for the kind of story that was told in the anime. Being a horrible person does not equal to be a bad character, despite him being shown as a simple villainous protagonist. |

| Subaru Mikazuki from My Roommate is a Cat. A story about a dude adopting and adapting to living with a cat should have been the biggest lay up for a 10/10 show. While Haru the cat lived up to my hopes, their owner Subaru was such a loser I actually had to drop the show. He was so insufferable that whoever wrote said character needs to be banned from ever holding a pen again. |

| It's been Tatsuya Shiba (The Irregular at Magic High School) for me for a while now, but looks like it's going to be changed to Chitose Saku (Chitose-kun is in the Ramune Bottle) soon once the anime airs. Both characters are "painted as something they're not" in their stories. Like how they are described are not what I see from what they act/show. Tatsuya is considered as someone who is so unskilled in his series' world yet he was only shown as this perfect being, never failing anything from beginning. For Saku, he is OP in his story, he's THE popular guy and ok he has the looks, brain and is athletic too - but he has unlikeable characteristics (narcissistic, arrogant and judgy) which is not a bad thing, it show flaws - but the story doesn't show these as flaws, he is always rewarded. The only time he's disliked is by the "villains" and because he is so popular. |

| I've never seen it, but the dude from School Days seems like a safe bet. But if I had to choose someone from a thing I have seen. Sakura Mamiya from Kyoukai no Rinne. All this talk about "oh this character cries too much" or whatever. Sakura Mamiya from Kyoukai no Rinne is worse than all them. Why? Because she's boring as fuck. I don't really care for Mash from Mashle, but at least some of the stuff he does is amusing. I watched two seasons of Kyoukai no Rinne for some reason and I didn't find a single thing interesting about this cardboard cutout of a character. And being boring is the worst crime when it comes to entertainment. This, to me, is the worst Sakura out there. |

| Worst protagonist doesn't mean a protagonist who is a bad person. It means a protagonist who doesn't add anything to the story. So, by default, a good anime can't have a worst protagonist. Worst protagonist is probably in some garbage like https://myanimelist.net/anime/13405/Utsu_Musume_Sayuri, though I haven't watched enough bad anime to really know the best worst. As for more mainstream bad protagonists, you have shows where the deuteragonist completely overshadows the protag, and the protag only exists as a vehicle to watch the deuteragonist. I suppose, like the dude in Chobits or the dude in Plastic Memories. I was going to say Akane from Psycho-Pass but watching someone's analysis convinced me that she is actually an important character. |
