was about time we got some Tomo developement. Still she could have been less harsh?
I hope Rupa is next. Tomo already teased her parents died in an accident..
Both Tomo and Nina are really blessed to have found such dependable mentor/big sister figures immediately. Think about it, either of them beeing alone in Tokyo without someone having their back? They would be miserable with their lack of social skills.
Im almost sad the Nina x Momoka drama boiled over last EP and was not brought up again at all, but Im also glad this episode was more chill.
Didnt really see the "yuri" last episode, it was pretty obvious Nina did not mean it romantically or sexually. Then again power of hindsight, I would have known if this show was yuri before watching it. I think..
Someone else brought this up in a different thread, but the background OST for this show is phenomenal! Aside from the OP and ED none of the songs so far have actually been good, maybe on purpose even, but the musical theme overall is still very strong.
Yeah, some bonding was about time. Now that they are serious about going pro you would expect them to hang out and practice more? I mean Nina officially stopped her education, so she has nothing else to do aside from her part time job.
With an apartment as great as Subarus you would expect them to meet there more often. Also love Momokas house though.
PS: I write way too damn much here all the time but this show is just so damn good it gets me talking

"This emotion is mine alone.
It is for Madoka alone." - Homura
or how I would descripe Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica.
Ngl, wasn’t the biggest fan of Tomo’s story here, like yeah I get what it’s trying to get across but to me it seemed like it was justifying being an asshole, like no wonder her old band members left lol. I get it’s what she’s truly feeling deep down, and I’m not saying she needs to sugarcoat her words, but there’s a right way to say things, constructive criticism pretty much, telling someone they fucking suck is definitely pretty demotivating.
I will say tho, Nina was kinda dumb for thinking she was ready to play live just knowing how to play a little ditty lol, hard to blame Tomo for being harsh there, she’s lucky this is our thick skulled Nina so it didn’t phase her. Besides the serious stuff this episode, I quite enjoyed the goofiness of the first bit of the episode, good lord I need Rupa to kick me like she kicked that door down lol, also Momoka had an epic reaction to that snake, she’d get along with Indiana Jones. Also, while it isn’t confirmed yet, looks like that “confession” at the end of the previous episode may not have been romantic, I honestly didn’t feel that it was but everyone else was going gaga about it, I thought maybe I was wrong but so far I’m not sure which is right, guess we’ll find out for sure as this goes.
Oh man lol. Tomo makes me think of LeBron a little. It's not just with music, no matter the field of expertise, when you understand it on such a fundamental level and you're so talented, it's gotta make everyone around you seem like kind of a bumbling idiot. Which puts the responsibility on you to not be an asshole about it when it's uncalled for. At a certain point, the ceiling for your group becomes how you handle these situations, not the shortcomings of your peers. Her aloofness makes perfect sense since she doesn't have the social skills to be a teacher, but there's a middle ground to be found in there. The real important thing at the end of the day is understanding each other. I love that we're getting flawed, human characters. It makes me excited when I see their potential for growth!
Side note, I just noticed the cacti next to the terrarium. Between that and the reptiles, it's a perfect way to show the level of care she's able to put into others. IE almost none lmao. And of course, her choosing piano makes sense as it's a thing you could get by playing solo with no charisma, but she keeps choosing bands because there's something in her that yearns for others. Real hedgehog dilemma shit. I love how much thought was put into these characters. Everyone really fits their instrument so perfectly.
And luckily for everyone, Nina's the type of stubborn mf to go even harder when someone tells her she should quit. At least in this situation it helps. We don't need Tomo to be soft on her, we just need everyone to understand where each other is coming from. The "you suck" surprised me at first, but then I got it. A lesser show would've had her say like "you've been getting better :)" and that's not her right now lol.
I love Subaru's emotional intelligence. Ironically the skill to be able to quickly read a person's whole mindset and their motivations would be a great talent for an actor to have. I see her being the glue that keeps everyone together.
Now I just can't wait to get more about Rupa. I'm sure I'll love her too. So far it feels like she's got a similar emotional intelligence as Subaru, but I wonder what unique things she's got going on. What's behind the wall of positivity she puts up to block out all the trauma and racism they've hinted at?
Nina just went unannounced to Tomo's apartment, broke their AC and then called it shit, after that decided to drop on Subaru's place also unannounced and ticked her to make her feel obligated on having them all night, oh, and also broke her door (with Momo and Rupa's help tho), ok, yeah, that settles it, I don't like Nina, she is trash as a person honestly, I've been thinking that since episode 1, she is fine as a protagonist but I don't have to like her, thankfully the cast of characters surrounding her is great.
This episode got me to like Tomo a lot more, she is right, they are a band, if there is something she feels she needs to say, then she should absolutely do it, and the members should be able to talk things out.
I like how there was absolutely no mention of the "confession" of the last episode, it's better this way.
Subaru again showing she is by far the most mature member, mommy Subaru taking care of the dumbasses ❤️
Sorry if my english is bad (っ˘▽˘)っ~~~
Btw, cry about it.
So far I'm liking Girls Band Cry. Not sure what I expected going in, but it's definitely more than I could ever guess.
Nina's definitely changed since the beginning of the show. She's taking personal risk now, sacrificing a safe path of education and family approval for an uncertain future with the band. She's capable of speaking her mind freely and bluntly without being prompted. She can openly take criticism, and while she can occasionally strike back with equal amounts of venom, she does so for the benefit of the band. However, she's still betting on the band to drive her future, and this hinges on everyone else also being serious about the band too. In a way, she's still reliant on the dreams of others. Much like Momoka and Tomo, no matter how hard Nina tries to drive the band forward, that effort is meaningless if everyone else aren't pushing forward as well.
Still, their path to making it big is a lot easier with a goal in mind. They don't necessarily have to wage war against Diamond Dust, and Diamond Dust doesn't necessarily have to reciprocate their declaration of war. The anime seems to go out of its way to make outperforming Diamond Dust as personal as possible though, rather than having Togenashi Togeari wanting to make it big for the sake of making it big. I suppose the current plot is fine, but given there hasn't been any input from Diamond Dust in terms of how they feel about competing, it still feels like Nina and friends are punching air. If they need a goal to give them a direction though, this is as good as any I guess.
One thing I like about Girls Band Cry is how everyone definitely support each other, but also get on each other's nerves constantly. Perhaps it's Nina's influence, where she seemingly values honesty from others above lies or sugar coating. Everyone has their own issues to deal with, and suppressing those emotions would cause issues down the road. As such, in terms of personal growth and the band's survival, Nina inadvertently forces everyone to be real with each other. If their performance during practice sucks, say it sucks. If something personal is interfering with practice, deal with it. If your sight of the band's end goal is obscured, she'll force you to look forward, pry open your eyes, and face the uncertain future. Fire-forged friendship, as it were.
Does she apply those same standards to herself? Previously no, but by this episode, she's definitely eliminating safety and comfort from her life. She still has things in her life she doesn't want to talk openly about, but that's understandable. You don't have to explain every trauma you've had in your life to justify why you're doing the things you're doing. Maybe if it's relevant to a situation at hand, and if it's actively interfering with your path forward?
Regardless, Girls Band Cry is interesting in this regard. To break out of stagnation, find a goal, get over your personal issues, and destroy any safety nets if you need to force yourself to keep moving forward. Is a do-or-die mindset necessary? Or, rather, is it necessary to go to such extreme lengths? Absolutely no, as there are many ways to become successful at whatever. That might be the crux of the whole plot between Togenashi Togeari and Diamond Dust. Is it better to compromise your method to have a better shot at your dream, or is it better to retain personal pride if it means taking the riskier, more uncertain path toward that dream? People can change, the environment can change, and life sometimes just happens. There's no perfect answer for every person, as every situation is different.
I kind of get the whole "proving my way was right" sentiment, but that sentiment doesn't apply to everyone. It's why I feel that Nina's projecting her feelings onto others at times. It feels like the only reason the band hasn't broken up yet is everyone else just happen to tolerate each other enough to keep going. Rupa had a really good point earlier, where the opposite of love isn't hate, but indifference. The greatest way Diamond Dust could shut down Togenashi Togeari is to just ignore them. Nina wants to prove Momoka was right to break away from Diamond Dust and start her own band. It's self-validation as Tomo put it too, where Nina wants to prove the song she loves so much, the one Momoka made, has value and should be recognized as such. It's a sort of idolization, where if Momoka asserts everything is worthless and abandons everything, then it would render all of Nina's struggles just as meaningless. In other words, the whole plot of Girls Band Cry really hinges on a few lines of thought holding up. It seems like Togenashi Togeari has a goal, but it's still nebulous. Making it big? Performing at Budokan? I suppose having a vague goal means you can conveniently shape the travel path to be whatever you want. Still, with how fractured Togenashi Togeari is, it should be fine.
If I had one observation about the anime though, the main characters haven't really faced any real problems externally in terms of popular reception or securing gigs. Things just kind of work out, and the main issues are interpersonal. It's why I feel Togenashi Togeari's current success is derived on a lot of vague factors, and their main obstacles are their personal issues, of which currently hinge on competing with Diamond Dust. I'd like it if Diamond Dust were to have their moment to discuss why they chose to compromise and become an idol band, if just to put into perspective why they think breaking off from Momoka was worth it. Diamond Dust is also burning bridges and working hard, just in a different way. "Wrong" in this sense is relative, which is why I'm still hung up on that idea. To compromise or not to compromise: if that's the main conflict of Girls Band Cry, then it would be nice to have a bit of time dedicated to the other side of that argument. At least, that's what I would hope for in a future episode

Shocked said: The greatest way Diamond Dust could shut down Togenashi Togeari is to just ignore them.
Why would DD want to shut down TT? Did you skip GBC episode 8?
The four original Diamond Dust members and Hina (who actually introduced Nina to DD and Void) all want Momoka and her new TogeToge band to be successful. Hina also wants Nina to succeed since she secretly envies her courage, even if she' unwilling to abandon her own utilitarian attitude. (As to what the exact relationship was between Nina and Hina isn't clear and opinion fanart ranges from ex-lovers to rivals. However, it seems they had run the school's radio / broadcast club together.)
