Great episode. First we see Fern say Flamme's writings are fake, then we learn she was her Master lmao. Surely she would've known where she kept her writings since the flashback showed they were there together? Anyway, at least now the travelling duo have a purpose with their time!
I'm Bruneian and I like anime. And Manchester United. And fat cats.

I liked the flashbacks with Eisen and his realization of Heaven's existence. Flamme being Frieren's master was a nice reveal and very unexpected.

Another great episode! So we finally see that the orange-haired woman from the opening is actually Frieren's teacher Flamme! I wasn't expecting that revelation! Also, Eisen appears once again, and he's actually still alive, and isn't dying any time soon! It makes sense since he's a dwarf after all.
I like how Flamme, Heiter and Eisen all knew that Frieren was going to regret not trying to get to know humans more, and in a way the 3 of them all planned this so that Frieren could speak to Himmel once again. I was shocked to know it was going to be a 10 year journey though! That means Fern will be a full grown woman by the time the journey ends!
But it was nice to see Frieren smile when she thought about the journey to come, because it does seem like she's going to revisit the old journey she did, while she will also be able to change what she regrets about the last journey she did. I'm really excited for this new journey, and I suppose this is going to be the main focus of the story from now on! Really curious to see Frieren and Fern's relationship from now on. It was nice to see Eisen reassuring Fern that Frieren was a good master.
Also, are we getting to know the boy that I suppose is also joining the party, due to the opening, in the next episode? It seems like I heard a new voice actor with the line of something about warriors, and he seems to be one, so I'm interested to see that! I genuinely feel like we are algo doing this journey with Fern and Frieren, and that's such a good feeling honestly!

That was unbelievably BORING
I'm beginning to regret watching this in sub. There's tons of dialogue, and nothing interesting happened at all. It's trying to get sentimental and get me to care about stereotype characters that had barely any unique appeal to start with.

1) that sure was annoying , give me back my 4 episodes worth of time .

2) this belongs somewhere around top 1000 - 10,000 and i.e me being generous . aside from the animation , nothing here is worth watching .

3) would have been watchable if they started with the route of killing the demon king & gave final 1-2 episodes to her conclusion which is now the whole anime .

4) i usually drop series with 24 or more episodes at 6 , sometimes at 5 but in cases like this 4 is more than enough .

I can't understand how it took so long to clean the beach. I don't know magic but I think I could clean it faster. And if they can fly, why's it take 10 years to go to the north end of the continent? Even Eisen can run on water at like 100 km/hr.

Lie down - Try not to cry - Cry a lot

This episode hit surprisingly hard. Her meeting her last living companion. Showing emotions yet at the same time being so - ruthless? - in her statements. Maybe the fact her student has to give 10 years away, so she can speak to Himmel? I don't know but I really need to digest this one properly.

Wouldn't all the legendary mages be elves since elves have centuries to accrue an immense amount of knowledge and skill to master not just a few but hundreds of spells? The huge difference in lifespans would mean that elves would be better than humans at practically everything.

The scene towards the end of the episode where Frieren talks with her group saying how their 10 year adventure wasn't even one one-hundreadth of her life leaves a sour taste, she don't want to be rude but she came off as really apathetic towards her group. Also, Flamme was Frieren's teacher huh?

Largly uneventful episode but thats alright because we got to see some PIRATES! yay i love pirates. Even if it is a dead pirate captain that's still cool to me because pirates are flipping awesome. Fern is now like mother figure to her it seems because Frieren is very lazy by the seems of it but lowkey real for her being lazy is awesome and it was kind of wholesome if you ask me. We got some flashbacks aswell and now im wondering how old frieren actually is? Is she 100? 1000? 10000? I am not sure. Anyway now Fern and Frieren are on a journey for another 10 years, Interesting show and i wonder how its going to blow me away and live up to being the number one anime on MAL.

"I guess himmel was wrong" no girl he knew you better than you know yourself. He just knew that you'd appreciate having been there with all your friends and seeing your friends be happy. 10:46 I find that extremely hard to believe. In reality it's always been the opposite.
People have always find it natural to belief in some form of continuation of life. Simply believing in "void" or "nothingness" is in fact rather irrational and counter-intuitive. It goes against instinct and seemingly what would be natural laws just like preservation of energy or mass. It would make more sense for the same principles to apply to life as well.
Though the "corrupt priests" explanation is more about the practical use of the philosophical belief which is also certainly a valid factor and yet another reason why throughout all of history and all culture humans have generally believed in some form of life after death.
Also this repetitive thing of "what's a mere 30 years" doesn't make a ton of sense, as for the most part her perception of time would be the same regardless of how long she lives.
Also again even if it isn't even 1/100th of your total life even in comparison that can still be like a full year in human perception. So I feel like her being so distant is more a choice rather than being a victim of having a long life, and yeah once again the whole "having a faster perception of time" doesn't quite add up. Like if she was as slow as a turtle or a tree I might believe that but she's not.

Flamme's so cool! I love that she's so ancient that she's depicted wearing ancient greek clothing. Ende's pretty interesting too. It reminds me of Angband from Tolkien's work: it's the fortress of the king of evil situated at the northernmost point on the continent. + I thought it was so cute when Frieren made those grapes sour for Eisen!

This was a pretty decent episode overall. I lie the way they've slowly been picking up on Frieren's understanding of appreciating the small details in life as well, even if they're just a smidge in her vastly long life. Her humanization ironically enough is growing over time in a human way lol. I enjoyed the short second wind adventure Frieren did with Eisen & I hope that the journey doesn't take 10 years again. May her former master's wisdom guide her & her party! On to the next episode!

So here we are. The biggest new show of Fall 2023 is finally here. I’d been meaning to read it for the past year or so, just so many LNs to read that manga tends to get buried down my priority list. I’m glad I experienced these first four episodes in anime form, though.

The storytelling and emotional weight of this first quarter of the show really ignited something in me that I haven’t felt in a long time when watching anime. I was instantly taken back to how I felt the first time I watched Violet Evergarden. Wonderful stories like this remind you that anime can be as simple or as complex as you make it. It’s all down to the quality of the writing. We can learn so much from stories like Frieren.

Eisen’s quote “that’s not what relationships are about” struck me as so simple, yet profound. You don’t enter into a relationship, whether it’s friendship or an intimate relationship with someone with the expectation that it’s all pointless because one day it’ll end and they’ll die. You go into it wanting to enjoy the moment and connect with people. Even though the pain of loss is tremendous, it’s better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all.

Even just in these 4 episodes, we see Frieren undergo quite a bit of a change. From understanding that she took her time with her party members for granted and not being able to give Himmel a proper goodbye, to wanting to make sure Fern didn’t make the same mistake with Heiter. From not wanting an apprentice to taking one one.

The New Year’s Festival was also really sweet to me. Frieren realised that while she doesn’t particularly care about the event, those close to her did. She wants to experience it not just out of respect for those days, but also for her own sake. While she’s been alive over a thousand years, she’s not really “lived”. Life’s passed her by. Meeting Fern and this 10 year adventure that she’s setting off on should do wonders for her.

Madhouse look like they’re back to their prime. The art, animation and storytelling is immaculate. The best they’ve done since Chihayafuru for sure. I got emotional several times during these episodes and I’m really looking forward to more.
@Marinate1016 "The storytelling and emotional weight of this first quarter of the show really ignited something in me that I haven’t felt in a long time when watching anime. And I couldn't agree more! I am watching the anime with my wife and I am fighting back tears each episode mainly to prevent her from teasing me haha. But the last show to resonate with me on such a strong level with such simple human stories was Violet Evergarden and it is funny that after listening to the soundtrack from Frieren, I was immediately thinking of the soundtrack of Violet Evergarden and going back to that.

My wife is more of binge anime viewer and the shows that I love I like to digest and take it in slowly, so I am ironically the Frieren who is leisurely enjoying the show at my own pace and my poor wife has had to deal with the constant wait. Of course, I do intend to speed up the pace a bit once I have some days off of work, but it is a fun comparison to make. I have been thoroughly enjoying the ride of Frieren and I can already tell it is going to make me overwhelmed with emotions at some point in the show and will likely become one of my favorites if the music and the writing remains at this level even when the show inevitably becomes a bit more action-oriented later on.

another beautiful episode that feels as if it was thematically intended to speak to me directly. I loved the gravestone conversation about heaven. If I believe in heaven, it's because heaven is worth believing in. When Eisen started praying, too, it really spoke to me.

What a lazy way to motivate the characters changes in belief. "The dwarves honor their traditions", which includes the belief that people turn to dust after death, then it cuts to Heiter simply saying that "it doesn’t matter if paradise exists" and that "it must exist because it would be better that way". Then Eisen shows up contradicting his tradition in the very next panel lmao.
Is this seriously the approach the story is going to take? Is there really going to be no dialectical approach? Are changes going to be motivated solely by shared experiences (with Frieren herself already influenced by that)?

Tradition is only truly honored when one understands the reasons for believing in it and for maintaining it; otherwise, it's just irrationalized habit. The author doesn’t even explore the reasons for believing in things - he simply adopts a convenient change: "it's important to believe this way because it would be better for my plot."

@dior Probably comes from it being a relaxing slice of life but that still has some semblance of a story behind it, like Kobayashi no Maidoragon. Not really my style, but it's just something to put on to relax.
