I was bawling my eyes out but this is not something you should count on if you are about to watch this movie since i am quite an emotional person. One thing that pissed me off after i was done crying like a kid... was the whole pride thing that led to the death of his sister...
i mean c' mon dude...

I was unaffected, or maybe slightly annoyed. It was mostly Seita's fault, his actions were ridiculous. My grandma was 10 during WW2 and she had to take care of her little sister and she did better job than he did. 14 years old is already old enough to realize consequences of his actions and be responsible, especially when the situation calls for it.
His aunt told him to go and help to extinguish the fires, since he didn't have work or school, but nah, he rather fooled around like a kid. I think she would be nicer to them, if he wasn't just mooching of her and her family. He didn't even help around house or anything.
After Setsuko told him she feels sick, it took him eternity to take her to the doctor. After she started to be seriously weak, he should just drop her at the aunt's house, they wouldn't let her starve to death as he did. He didn't have to apologize, he didn't have to talk to them, he could just leave her there and disappear, if it was too much for his pride to apologize. But nah, he rather left her die and then went somewhere to die too. I just can't bring myself to sympathize with him. And usually I am very sensitive and fast to cry during any sad story. Also, the fact that it was shown right away in the beginning of the movie that they are dead made the ending kinda underwhelming.

My least favorite Ghibli movie, I was not impressed at all. It would have much more impact if the director told his story as it really happened, when he wanted to apologize to his sister.

I watched this when I was 13 or something. didn't even make me sad. I heard that this anime is very emotionally devastating and so I watched it. I'm not a fan of Ghibli in particular, but I liked many of their works and had high expectations for this movie as a whole.
Turns out MC was so stupid (can't even bother to remember his name), I felt frustrated because I wasted a lot of time on this horrible movie.

I didn't necessary cry, but man it was depressing. Glad they are in a better place. This is one of those animes that I can't watch a 2nd time.

The story is sad, but the movie was too boring and I can't really get myself to like Ghibli art.

i cried while watching bec i knowand feel the pain and suffering through poverty, when i was still in elementary me and my younger sister had to eat only once a day and if were lucky we get to eat 3 times a day with milo as our main dish (well to us at that time milo + rice = heaven). and i connected to the desperation seita showed when he withraw his mom's money just to feed his sister. and it made me remember the time where i used to find scraps of metal and bottles and sell them to the junkyard just to earn money for food.

im just thankful that our family is financially stable now bec of our cooperation as a family and my parents hard work and sacrifice

I managed to hold out until the very moment when Seita mentions he put Setsuko's ashes into the fruit drop tin, because my mind immediately went back to that beginning scene when the guy tosses the fruit drop tin away, which is followed by Setsuko's spirit/soul seeing a dead Seita after she herself had already died.

Starting the movie I didn't really know what to make of that scene at first but oh my god

I wasn't really affected at all. I'm not a fan of the trope of opening a movie with the ending, because then you know what will happen. You go into the film knowing that both children will die. It is hard to get attached to the characters if you know that they won't make it in the end. So call me heartless, but this movie didn't do anything for me

I teared up at the end, when Seita was trying to feed Setsuko. I was officially crying when he said "She never woke up". I didn't really like Setsuko because of her constant crying, but that scene really touched my heart.

Going in I expected something more dramatic from all the things I've heard.

It was much slower paced and I gotta say half of the shit felt intentionally brought on for the sake of the narrative rather then it developing organically. It was sad yes but more melancholic and depressing instead of heartbreaking.

I have hitherto taken immense pride in the fact that no movie has ever made cry. However, the utterly heartbreaking ending has managed to defeat me. While it only lasted a minute, I did shed several tears at the sight of Setsuko being buried and I even made that undignified noise that people make when they're bawling. I didn't force myself out of expectations. It happened naturally.

War truly is hell.

smh I actually cried a few times when it was getting towards the end. Also got a little teary eyed when the little sister cried at night from not having her mother..

Smh...I didn't think this movie was going to be THAT depressing. But Seita, despite how wrong or dumb that we may see him in our eyes, he did the best he could for his sister. All he wanted to do was take care of her and live happy. Smh here comes the water works again :'()

It was definitely one of the more depressing movies that I've seen. I'm not much of a cryer, tho it got me to as close to crying as I believe I could get from watching an anime.

I didn't even feel sad. I just thought it was too tragic, like reading that children in Africa die from starvation. I felt sorry for Setsuko, she couldn't choose where to be born or her relatives. She was born in the wrong country at the wrong time, and also had a brother who didn't know what was the best for her.

It's weird, I teared a bit when they were fresh on their mother's death, but the ending I just felt a twisted upset/depressed feeling. I think it's partly to do with all the apathetic people portrayed which didn't feel right with me in a genuine sense, and how Seita held a little too closely to his pride (like that guy said).

I didnt cry like a bitch I just found it greatly depressing and a couple tears slipped here and there. His struggle to keep himself and his sister fed resonated with me a little as I've had my fair shared of struggles but its a great film. Tragic but great.

Honestly, I was bawling after this movie was over. About 20 minutes before the sister died, I kind of had a feeling she wasn't going to live till the end of the movie, but I still was bawling. When she was sucking on marbles like they were candy... This movie is absolutely depressing, but so real at the same time.

Oh boy oh boy
What the hell is this movie??
A masterpiece in my opinion.
Totally speach less after watching this
Movie.
I mean it's a pretty old movie but the achievement it got is really unspeakable.
I mean many movies are releasing nowadays I am not saying every movie is bad but this movie achieved a top level of achievement... So a great movie that executed a great story in it.
