Kinda like the difference between wine tasting and just jugging down the wine bottle in 1 go. I guess it's a difference in taste preferences.

I'll admit it: I do like pantyshots, I enjoy seeing them in most contexts (except when it's extremely young girls like in Ryofuko-chan, wtf is with that??), and I honestly think modern isekai/harem/romcom anime don't have enough of them, compared to similar anime from 10-20 years ago. While I did have misgivings about pantyshots in my early anime-watching days as a naïve and blushing early-20something, I eventually learned to stop worrying and love the fanservice. Aside from panties being a "unique" feature in settings where most characters wear uniforms, there'll always be something to the "forbidden-fruit" appeal of seeing something that isn't supposed to be seen. All that said, I can understand objections to panchira in generally-serious/"respectable" anime, but c'mon, at least let us loyal pervs appreciate them in the trashy/ecchi stuff. Perhaps China is to blame for the decline of pantyshots? @Coaghim More than that, I'd say that the "pantyshots don't belong in regular anime, everything should be completely innocent or explicit pornography" mindset (as seen in certain elitist tastemakers like roriconfan/ThatAnimeSnob) reflects a very rigid, insecure, black-and-white worldview where no middle ground or shades of gray are allowed. So it's not so much "sipping wine vs. chugging the bottle," but rather, "Why would you even drink wine at all? Every beverage should either be Everclear or non-alcoholic. Nothing else is allowed because ambiguity is triggering to me." |

@Zalis Ufff, that's pretty dark & sad at the same time. But you're totally right, some people will indeed go as far as that. Not only do they vow to only drink water for the rest of their life, they will also do everything in their power to deny the production, distribution & appreciation of wine all together :S As if there aren't other far more pressing concerns in the world to worry about lol :P |

It kinda depends on the anime. If you're watching something with a more serious tone, yeah, it definitely doesn't fit then. If you're watching anything by Trigger or some fanservice heavy anime like Highschool of the Dead, you can kinda expect some pantyshots. |

@Hikinekomori To me it's really rare that anime is ever sexually arousing since they often fail to actually portray actually sexy behaviour and often dont make enough use of sexy sounds and make good use of planned emotional states of the viewer or do enough employing of high quality animation to show those subtle movements that add realism to trick your brain more. Instead we more often get gonzo cam angles, minimal animation and avoidant naivety or comedic crude behaviour using the same jokes over and over. |

@traed You know this right here is/always been my biggest frustration with anime in general how it handles human interaction and movement. Most anime attempts at sensuality come off as ridiculously clumsy. They literally have such bad direction, such glaring problems like the wrong music (either a really bad jarring ST or an ending theme that is just whiplash with the mood), the wrong response by another character, the wrong response by the character who is doing the pose (i.e. the 'tsundere' shrieking etc) and they are almost always trying to shove horrible comedic laughs into your face that it breaks the mood and wrecks the scene. And the crude behavior of some of the observers only encourages a crude attitude on the part of actual viewers, toward sensuality. I think the reason is most of the creators are very young, ignorant, and view all intimate encounters in animalistic terms, with all the elegance and polish of an ape. |

Depends on the joke. Most of the time its really just cheap fanservice. And unless it's a comedy anime it can quickly kill the mood. But sometimes an anime just goes for cheap stuff that is easy to make. Some generic "isekai harem feel better about yourself anime" for example |

I hope (really) you're not saying this because of the recent trend going around with young people claiming they're "asexual" and hate sexual things etc etc... **sigh*... this trend has literally no future; and global corporations are just rubbing their hands with glee at all the youngins these days vowing to dedicate their lives to being career slaves and not having kids, just dedicating all their lives to work and "making money"... (why else do you think this attitude is being promoted?)
IF NOT then I have a lot of questions about why a guy would hate ecchi. It's okay to not have it as a favorite thing in anime, but actively hate it?
It's not my favorite thing, and some panty shots are really corny, but I can't comprehend hating all ecchi in general. It's literally what made anime so popular.

"I hear you. Gratuitous panty shots and cheap sexualization can indeed feel unnecessary and disrupt the immersion in anime. It's a common sentiment for many viewers who appreciate a more thoughtful approach to storytelling and character development. While cultural preferences may vary, there's a growing demand for content that focuses on meaningful narratives rather than relying on stereotypical and overused tropes. It's great that you can still enjoy anime like Mato Seihei no Slave, where sexualization serves a purpose within the context of the story. What are your favorite anime that strike the right balance for you?" |

@Coaghim
More than that, I'd say that the "pantyshots don't belong in regular anime, everything should be completely innocent or explicit pornography" mindset (as seen in certain elitist tastemakers like roriconfan/ThatAnimeSnob) reflects a very rigid, insecure, black-and-white worldview where no middle ground or shades of gray are allowed. So it's not so much "sipping wine vs. chugging the bottle," but rather, "Why would you even drink wine at all? Every beverage should either be Everclear or non-alcoholic. Nothing else is allowed because ambiguity is triggering to me."

Like there's no way the girls of Tonari no Totoro would be directed like that when seen running from behind if they were older. I don't know whether this is true for Ryofuko-chan, if not, then the idea might be to create a contrast or something like that.. |

@Tropisch My actual point was "there is something wrong with you if you enjoy your sexuality being exploited, and especially for clearly depraved reasons". If you legitimately enjoy being teased by non-existent facsimiles of women and think it's okay to show it even in series intended for children, then please better yourself. No sane person enjoys being assaulted by sexual imagery like that, especially out of nowhere/when the series is NOT that kind of series (which unfortunately happens quite often). |

@Kamikaze_404 I am not here to particularly defend any specific franchise or titles but Sexual exploitation in media entertainment has been around for well over a century. If someone is clearly concerned about Sexual exploitation then they are to blame for being exposed to it without doing their own due diligence before sitting down and consuming whatever it is they are trying to watch. Specifically if one is not even paying attention to the suggested age ratings. Which I would find it hard to believe actual real sexual exploitation themes in Japanese Anime would even happen without at least a "R - 17+" stamped on it. This is just me but I find it hard to believe there is actual real sexual exploitation in general Japanese Anime specifically designed for a child audience. Even so, having a short scene of some fictional character having their panties flashed for a brief moment in general Japanese Anime aimed at a teen audience is not real sexual exploitation in my opinion. Anyone who would think panties being flashed in Japanese Anime is some how real sexual exploitation is simply just an extreme snowflake. Then again this is just my own opinion. I am sure some would probably think even a brief flash of a fictional characters underwear being shown is objectification enough to classify something being sexual exploitive enough, which I just find weird in itself. |

I am not here to particularly defend any specific franchise or titles but Sexual exploitation in media entertainment has been around for well over a century.

This does not help your point. Just because it's been around for a good long while does not mean that it should be there in the first place, ColourWheel said: f someone is clearly concerned about Sexual exploitation then they are to blame for being exposed to it without doing their own due diligence before sitting down and consuming whatever it is they are trying to watch. Which I would find it hard to believe actual real sexual exploitation themes in Japanese Anime would even happen without at least a "R - 17+" stamped on it. This is wrong, and shows that you are either ignorant or legitimately just that blind. A good example would be Galaxy Angel Rune - an anime that does not present itself as ecchi, does not come from source material that is ecchi/hentai, and belongs to an anime series that has 0 ecchi content in it (the G.A anime franchise doesn't even have a singular panty joke in it). Admittedly most of the G.A franchise IS based on hentai VNs but only up until Rune's source material - yet somehow the entire anime franchise itself minus Rune managed to be comedic without shoving ass in your face. Now, imagine my surprise when a great anime franchise of 4+ series consisting of completely clean good comedy features a series in which little girls pose naked suggestively. Once again, Rune is the only Galaxy Angel anime that is NOT based on a hentai VN - its source material has no sexual content in it. Ironic, I suppose... The reason why I dropped Rune is due to the fact that, although it had no indication of it, it laid it on quite thick with... well, much more than panty jokes. To give you an example, there's a pretty lengthy scene (like half a minute) of the characters (which are little girls) being shown naked and covered only by floating "caution" tape. There was absolutely no indication this would happen. This is not to mention all the times it shoves ass in your face for no particular reason (at times the camera just zooms in on some random girl's ass, not even for comedic effect) and the premise in the episode, which was not actually hinted at by the title nor anything else in the series or its description, was also pretty bad (one of the characters gets her panties blown all over town and "uuuuwaaaaa she's so flustered what will she do~" is the presentation of this premise). If you go look it up now on anidb you can see it has the ecchi tag, because I had to add it there myself. It was not tagged as such and its age rating is "PG-13". So please, tell me, how did I seek this out exactly? This is also not to mention that just because it's "flashed briefly on the screen" (generally it's not lol) does not mean that it has any place there. If you want to be teased, go watch porn. Sexual exploitation refers to the fact that ecchi is a derivation of actual pornography. Pornography itself is a thing that heavily interfaces with the human libido in an objectively detrimental way - not to mention that it also encourages the alteration of the libido and sexual fantasies the more one consumed it (do you seriously think that people get vore or piss fetishes out of nowhere? they're extreme examples but they're generally results of the kind of sexual exploitation that pornography and - to some degree - adjacent things engage in with its user). And yes, the fact that it is a derivation of pornography still makes it sexually exploitative. Perhaps it's not as bad as porn, but "not as bad" does not mean "good" or even "okay". You should've kept your opinion to yourself. |

Just because something is not your cup of tea doesn't mean it should cease to exist. Hell I don't exactly like Modern Hentai but I am not going to go around trying to advocate it's extinction. Kamikaze_404 said: Admittedly most of the G.A franchise IS based on hentai VNs Right here should have set off red flags for you and you are complaining about a single scene that has one of the characters (who is not naked by your explanation) covered by caution tape? Let me remind you that Japan has a long history of repressive sexual culture dating back before even WW2. One of the reason why most westerners find many things in Japanese media so perverse to them is mainly due to how Japan was forced to westernize after the War (you only need to look at their censorship laws to realize this). To the Japanese Audience something that you just described doesn't warrant the level of actual Sexual exploitation in their culture. If this is the type of thing that upsets you, it would simply be advised just to stay clear of Japanese Anime all together since even panty shots have existed in Japanese Anime almost since it's inception and even happen sometimes even in Shoujo Anime which is primarily targeting a young female audience. Kamikaze_404 said: So please, tell me, how did I seek this out exactly? Honestly I don't care what you seek out. so I won't even bother asking. Kamikaze_404 said: This is also not to mention that just because it's "flashed briefly on the screen" (generally it's not lol) does not mean that it has any place there. If you want to be teased, go watch porn. Also who made you the authority of what belongs or not in any particular Japanese Anime titles? Obviously whoever the Author of the work you are complaining about wanted to add it in. What makes you the person to claim what should and shouldn't be in someone elses work of art? It's ok if you don't like something but doesn't mean it simply just doesn't belong simply because of your own personal opinion on the matter. lets face it, it is simply just your opinion. I would like to see you go straight up to the Author's face and tell them exactly what belong and what doesn't in their own works and see exactly how they react to that. Yeah I am not going to comment on specific fetishes but I think your understanding about Ecchi is completely wrong as well. By your standard it seems simply anything with nudity in it or flashing of panties seems like porn to you which that would make almost everything porn simply if it includes mild sexual content in it. Which would basically turn the entire entertainment industry world wide on it's head from trying to re-classify things in your perfect world. From taking something like a Western movie franchise like "Police Academy" to even an Anime like "Sailor Moon" and re-classify it as Pornography. Even if I am wrong about all this, it's a bit pointless to debate something you clearly have a misunderstanding about. I don't think I am the right messenger to lay it out for you straight enough without you seeing it as some insult. Also, who is to say even porn is bad? I don't personally watch porn since I am an old man now and no longer some horny teenage kid but there was a time when I did. Pornography is not inherently seen as immoral by all, nor should it be. Porn might not be appropriate for children but actual pornography was never intended for young children in the 1st place, no more than allowing kids to drink alcoholic beverages before they are of the age to consume it. My main problem with the poll is the failure to recognize sex of the users here. I doubt as many men hate panty shots as that of women, but series made for women obviously lack these panty shots. If they really hated panty shots one would avoid shounen/seinen, but of course that is rarely the case for these people who "hate panty shots." |

To me it's like even western ecchi jokes. But visual. IF it's a non-ecchi show then yeah it should stay wholesome and on topic comedy or drama or whichever no doubt about that. That is when I can agree and say it deserves to not go ecchi and even then they don't even get tagged either as it's like brief/isn't a big enough part of the anime either. It isn't always funny. Neither are the ecchi minded characters, cameras and all (example Baka & Test), bloodnoses and more. If the trope is spun up differently I'd say sure which sometimes it is, most times it's not. I mean anything parody can sometimes play into it too much then parody it too it just happens. There is some I'm like really t he character is on the other side of the room and it still happens they fall on them. That moment in Seitokaichou was just so dumb in that dressing room it wasn't funny it was forced. But it's a dumb ecchi show so it wasn't surprising. But I always remember it as one of the worst then others for different reasons. Some ecchi jokes can be enjoyable visual, innuendos/other dialogue based. But it varies on how it told, who tells it, what the outcome is 'for the audience or for the characters reacting', what it's referencing and more. I do find them annoying sometimes especially if accidental and well forget that they still react it's like come on you tropey/annoying characters. The lack of 'I know you didn't do it on purpose/intend on it' happens enough and it's just annoying. The reverse where the girls are into it and the guys aren't I mean sure.... But when it's the regular it can be a bit rolling the eyes worthy of scenes to not care for then teen ecchi mind targeting excitement after a few times. It's only so distracting, effective or worth it. Powering up sure, intentional otherwise eh. Unless it justifies itself well in story for the characters to be under a magic spell or something or unfortunate situations (like some Hentai with a story focus) then eh. Unless it's like an office romance (ah that manga, sigh) or others then I mean sure of whatever ecchi moments. The way the clothes move is just so 'why did you have to focus on this'. Then again I don't mind the way sometimes animation goes weird ways for particular things but with reason of course. Sometimes it's really dumb. |

@Roth Nah, it's you who should seek help ASAP for being offended by people liking fictional characters.
@Kamikaze_404 Nice logic you got there "Everyone who likes what I don't needs help!" Take your own advice.

@Tropisch I'm not offended, I'm disturbed. You're like 30 years old defending why panty shots in anime with HIGH SCHOOLERS are fine, you're the prime example of what I'm talking about. Weirdo. And oh, the irony of you attacking me for "being offended" when my comment offended you too. Strange. |

Kamikaze_404 said: Quite telling that you think the representation of a pretty sexually suggestive thing is "inane". Try going without porn for a day (or a year...). The word I used is "innate" not "inane", though "benign" is closer to my intent of phrasing. It isn't in every case meant to be sexually suggestive. Complete nudity wouldn't inherently be sexual either. It all depends on context and intent and the view of the viewer. It doesn't matter what you think because it doesn't change the fact if someone doesn't have something be a major detriment to their life that thing isn't counted toward diagnostic of mental illness. No one here is saying "loving anime panty shots is ruining my life". Just stop watching shows where there obviously will be any sexuality if it bothers you so much. |

@rohan121 The poll is also confusing, considering the mismatch of the poll question and the title of this thread. |

@ForgotEyeWasHere That is an issue I see on a lot of threads. Though I also think different people might have different things in minds when they hear "panty shot" which also throws off results. |
