MrNTR said: Watch episode 1 again. So he's into little girls? Great... What exactly did he do in Ginza that had so much impact as to make him considered a "hero" anyways? The king obviously have some sort of plan, or he's completely mad. No, he's just reacting to events. He heads an empire comparable to the Roman Empire, ruling the known world. That's been going on for a long time. The Empire has never met an opponent anywhere near their own level of power, let alone one that's far more powerful than they are. This is all clear from the debate in the Imperial Senate. Then the Gate comes along. We don't know where the Gate came from, but it doesn't seem to be the Empire's creation. Now the Empire has a new neighbor, and their standard operating procedure is to conquer. They send through an invasion force. This backfires, badly. The Empire has internal stability problems. They don't have one big central government; they have subsidiary kingdoms with their own kings and armies and internal politics. The Emperor is more worried about his empire coming apart than the new external threat, which is being grossly underestimated back at the Imperial capital. They have very limited info about what's going on at the front. When the armies of the subsidiary kingdoms show up, even they don't know what happened to the first army. If you're familiar with the history of the Roman Empire, none of this is unexpected. |

My point above was merely to say that having read the manga after the first episode, I think overdoing the gore at the beginning (which does exist in both) would have turned off some "anime only" fans because they would think this was going to be a hardcore fighting/gore animation. It does have that aspect, but it isn't the only aspect of this series Personally I care little to none about gore. My policy in enjoying anime has to have two things. Interesting and/or likeable characters and appreciable story with nice flow (doesn't need this for episodic anime, because it doesn't need to be a continuous story for those anime, for those, characters become more important.). Character design, animation quality and OST are of secondary importance to me. So far, I really liked the second episode. They gave an outline of the entire situation in just under 20 mins. Many anime fail to do that. And the characters are likable as well (at least so far with none of the other three main characters have been introduced yet). Takuan_Soho said: Having blasted A-1 in the past, so far I would have to say that they are doing an excellent job adapting things. They made more explicit some of the politics (I was surprised that they started this episode with 5 minutes of it rather than the battle) that will pay off a little bit down the road. So they are doing the exact opposite of what they did in SAO. They have made it easy for the viewer only to keep up with what is going on. They really are over the hard part, not to say that they can't screw things up from here, but so far very good. Couldn't have agreed more. That's what I liked about the episode. I finally got my hands on an English translation o the OP and I was very pleasantly surprised at how tightly they fit the scenes in the OP to the words in the lyrics. I don’t really have anything I’m wishing for- I pretty much know my place. Even so, I think deep down that I don’t wanna let anything go; It seems I’m only playing “the good girl”. Protecting something is harder than I thought, But its not like that means I’m gonna give up! At the far reaches of the blue sky- the end of these connected roads, People still won’t come to understand one another….but I’m fine with that! The door I’ll open will have everything changing, Just like the break of dawn! |

I can't help remembering that scene when the black screen started to tell us how many people died instead of spending more time to that particular scene. |

I kind of had fun watching all the medieval dudes getting wrecked. This is how it should be. No way will this people have even remote capability of fighting a modern army. Although Japan will be in trouble if they are the only ones with a Gate. If a whole other planet is on the other side then as the US guy said that means a tone od resources. And the other countries in the world and especially the big nations won't allow Japan to just take all of that for themselves. Hell this new world beyond the gate might lead to WWIII on earth because many will forge alliances and try to stop others from getting all those recourse for themselves etc. I noticed that in this episode we saw mostly human armies though. So what happened to all the orgs etc they had with them previously? Is that something only the empire of the asshole king has? Btw why are those creatures even following a human army. Are they like their slaves? And how the hell do this humans control big ass dragons like the one we saw at the end. Do they have magic spells that help such things but not magic capable of war? In general my problem is: -the designe itself - left out mature stuff - left out story parts (with a 12 ep anime it is understandable ...but still -,-') Im done with the anime. singleturbo said: Americans: RESOURCES! Japan: Lets investigate their culture and politics (after killing 120,000 people) They supposedly sent in some scouts before, but their first major move is to just roll in with tanks and men and get into a fight with a much inferior force? Wouldn't they send in drones and have all sorts of recon on the (potential) enemy first? I'd imagine the world would spend years investigating before even making a move. Also, I'm sure they would definitely know how the gate works before making a major move. I mean how do you go "lets see what this place is like" AFTER you just walk in and decimate over 100,000 Roman-empire age people? Yeah I get rolling in and kicking *** after being attacked, but don't pull the pacifist card after that "JAPAN **** yeah!" display and then also toss a jab at the USA at the same time. Are you seriously that ignorant? How the hell would they use drones in a foreign world with no satellites and computers etc to control them. They can't even use GPS location in that world and you expect them to use drones? Such ignorance. In such circumstance you use the old fashion way. Also to you seriously not know the difference of killing armies and killing defenseless civilians. Yes they killed more than 100000 etc but this were armies attacking them. And their tactics of securing the perimeter around the gate is standard military procedure. Because they killed those armies they should then go around and burning villages and killing poor unarmed villagers? Stop being stupid. |

This actually got good, really interesting. So much going on. America being America even in the anime world. The emperor using his own army for his own plans. So many causalities. Japan might be pressured by other nations. Politics (not my favorite but it being implemented really means something) On a whole, this has so much "news" that I am at a loss. This is going to be an interesting ride even if half of the things aren't really my type. |

Episode in which the plot closely follows the steps I had speculated, however, the narrative is successful in a more than good to build a series of events that have not bored watching making the story interesting. Death tolls and Water Elves. Ep 2. Plot: The Imperial Capital of King Molt learn of there armies defeat beyond the gate and that the SDF has taken root at the entrance. Afterwards wave after wave attack the SDF, where they are killed and the death toll on the IC side is close to 100,000. Iwata and his recon troop go out to learn more about world but encounter a dragon attack on a settlement and a sole surviving elf girl. Character: This is setting up the enemies side and make no mistake the Molt is the enemy. He carries the king's charm and a dark mind considering all the sacrifices done to the troops that are not his own. He seems to not think much of the SDF or if he is, thinks he has the resources to deal with them once his enemies in his own country are dealt with. His daughter sounds like a noble warrior so the upcoming drama for her would be the main draw for the evil side. Iwata and his troop seem pretty lassie faire about the death toll they made but this is technically war. THey're probably not thinking much about it or figures that they are still making the defensive moves, which they are. I'm probably not gonna remember the other soldier's names all that well though Animation/sound: The deaths were grisly but not overly gory which is fine. We get that all those guys died not only from the explosions but the toll granted. The Dragon was a nice addition and the burnt arm was good enough to cover the death there. It gets the message across without going into the gore porn. 4/5. Builds well on the last ep and give us our villain for the season. WOulda liked to see Iwata and co at that village more and learning about things. Maybe see it be an established secondary base. |
