THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
A rearrangement of classes to finetune to the students' needs, and Sekai-kun is all but done to heck with "exam art". As expected, Yaguchi is still under Ooba-sensei with Hashida and Kuwana.

The various abstract themes are as of Geidai's unwavering standards, and that kinda threw Yaguchi off on his bench on what is fit for those themes (that's why adaptability is quite important in the world of art. The ideas are there for bonds and connections for his motif, but the painting got worse as motivation can only get you so far.

Finally, a concrete topic that can better put the idea into drawing, but the better Yaguchi gets, the worse the painting got of bonds threatening to tear itself apart, that's how Sekai-kun's "missing the point" feedback rubs Yaguchi the wrong way, and he realized it.

It's back to basics drawing from an F-100 canvas, and art, good or bad, there's no such thing as "failure", and alleviating that thought will be Yaguchi's biggest strength of drawing "bonds". Ruuji has been skipping art classes, and it doesn't forebode well for his family. Making the effort to go see Mori-senpai at Musashino Art Uni while Ryuji's just hanging outside because he didn't feel like going home, it's understandable because of his defiant attitude towards taking art cram classes (which cost a lot of money).

Mori-senpai's drawings being a form of prayer, that's her composition. Yaguchi's is more a tool, and seeing what she did, he fires back up to create his "bonds" canvas which impressed both Saeki-sensei and definitely Ooba-sensei. Yaguchi has gone though hell and back to achieve the art that he wants to draw, but in terms of "exam art", he's falling behind because there isn't enough challenge from it being a rehash of his canvas work, which doesn't excite.

Just when all hope is lost, Sekai's call came at the right opportune time, and hope Yaguchi's ready to get his gut punched and understand art and its pristine.

Currently at chapter 9 in the manga.

It's finally time to break up into new class assignments. Thirty of them will be broken up in five classes with one teacher each. A pretty good method for the exam.

Kuwana, Hashida and Yaguchi are all in class D with Ooba-sensei as the teacher. And Yotasuke has not even come back once to the classes. He really doesn't like it.

The students have around 100 days until the first art school exam begins. The assignment this time was to create something important to you. Which is pretty hard for Yaguchi because he's pretty used to painting what is in front of him. Creativity is something that not a lot of people have but it's pretty handy (sadly, I don't have it..)

''Bonds'' is the theme that Yaguchi picked this time but was it good enough? Sadly not, at that moment he realized what Yotasuke told him..

I seriously love Saeki-sensei in the manga but she feels different in the anime. Might be her VA and the messed up dialogues. Anyway, it's time to make a F100 painting, the same type as Mori-senpai's one. It doesn't matter if it's good or bad. Yaguchi has only been making paintings for exams so this time, it's to improve himself even more with the skills he learnt the past monhts.

On the otherside, Ryuuiji is having some troubles with himself and with his family. Welp, It's time to see Mori-senpai together with Ryuuji. After getting his thoughts together and thinking about Mori's way of art. He finally got it.

Saeki-sensei and Ooba-sensei were impressed by Yaguchi's F100 painting. But it still isn't enough for the real stuff later on. Having troubles with himself again, Yotasuke's call saved the day. I don't know if I got it right when watching the raw but ''Doing something you like, doesn't mean it's always fun'' hits pretty hard.

Let's see what Yotasuke wants to say.

They managed to adapt 3 chapters, pretty crazy. Had to put the manga next to the raw.

Aw. Doing something you like doesn't mean it's always going to be fun.

The animation while Yatora is painting his new interpretation of "bond" is really cool, you can really feel the emotion.

The animation was noticeably better this episode, the irony being that I just recently finished Shirobako, so now I'm wondering how Seven Arcs is handling this series and if some other circumstances had them get a slow start.

I still feel like the pacing is still odd, but I guess I'm getting more used to it. As him churning out art and improving wasn't something that felt terribly rushed. Maybe because his painting about bonds was the first one shown that feels like he's going down the right path. They sort of started with this hesitant, punk-like kid who was trying something different, but now we're kind of seeing that he really has a talent for it and it's not necessarily a whim.

I wasn't expecting him to win the contest in this episode though, and the more I think about the story and Yaguchi's situation, the more it all kind of reminds me of Hikaru's progress in Hikaru no Go. So, here comes the progressive hurdles -- I expect.

I can see Ryuji run into the same problem as me, encounter a straight friend that is too good to be a boyfriend like Yatora. But the only different is that I learn to confess to the unconfessable, while Ryuji is not there (yet).

Great episode! Yaguchi attempts to draw on a f-100 canvas after Saeki sensei tells him he should. He has been inspired by Mori senpai’s painting of angels she did a while back. Ryuji also invites him to go see Mori senpai with her as he missed her on her last visit but she abandons him when they arrive at the place saying she only wanted to get away from home xD. When he arrives, he sees a picture inspired by Buddhism she drew which he liked though he didn’t get to see Mori. His next painting is inspired by bonds and he seems to be very passionate about it. He gets praise for it finally.

Looking forward to the next episode!

I'm really enjoying this show. I appreciate how it's didactic and useful for artists, but how that doesn't take away from the passion that it's still there. Exactly how the story is trying to teach us; art comes with passion and expression first.

Seeing these paintings with color is a great improvement from the manga, too. I don't mind the animation having its falls.

I hope Yuka/Ryuji is not falling for Yatora, because he is so into Mori-senpai. It would be extra sad that Yuka is trying to bring them closer together. The story might take that direction, though, since it's a drama.

They finish their paintings so fast!! I am jealous!

Yuka's family life is stressful.

I love Mori-senpai's painting.

Yaguchi redid a painting of his that people loved. I guess he was nervous and wanted to be on the safe side.

Oh, Yotasuke wants to ask Yaguchi out on a date. lol At least I know he won't ask Yaguchi to go alone like Yuka did earlier. Damn, if someone did that to me, my social anxiety would kill me.

Have to say, Mori-senpai's painting. The Budha hands.
To me, it felt less like a prayer of goodwill and more like a plead for help. The hands in different directions are to symbolise a try to reach out in every conceivable way. The paintbrushes are to symbolise a means to escape, escape the awful life, escape this maimed world we live in. Thus hiding in the painting, escaping through the art medium. The growing leaf on the brush is to symbolise that the art, the painting is still growing. What was once a paintbrush, will one day be back to dust, to earth. Only to have a new beginning. A new suffering. A never-ending torture. Unless one breaks the cycle.

Pretty good episode. Yaguchi was struggling to pinpoint what was missing in his art, and seeing him overcome that obstacle was good. Only to have it all crash and burn when he comes third to last. Ryuji is having his own issues as well with his father as well as his own art it seems. He's skipping cram school as well, maybe he's having issues with art as well?

Well what's clear is both of our main characters are down bad rn. Hopefully things gets better for both of them next episode. Yotasuke may be just what Yaguchi needs to get out of his slump... maybe they'll pull each other out...we'll see.

Off topic, but something about that cram school teacher in unnerving.

Not bad enough for me to drop it. I found Yaguchi’s breakthroughs to be interesting. My connection to the characters is still borderline non-existant so that sucks, but it’s still watchable.

Another solid episode. Yaguchi is slowly improving in his skills but of course, there is more to art than just drawing/painting what you have in front of you.
In the end, he managed to create a good piece that impressed his teachers but got easily discouraged when his next work for the cram school received a low score. Not that it surprises me tho... considering he basically redid the F-100 painting but this time changing the theme to "food". Guess he just wanted to play it safe there.

That said, our MC is now on a big slump but hopefully, that sudden call from Yotasuke will be just what he needs to get out of it.

Have not posted about the 1st 4 eps, but I can say this ep 5 is a major improvement from the previous episodes. If anything, I think it actually just keeps getting better and better?

This ep really shows the struggles of art, that art isn't as straightforward as ABC and is not formulaic like math. Just because you receive praise for a few works that are really good, doesn't mean you will consistently draw good works from now on. And we can see Yaguchi is really struggling to grasp with that. It's never an easy path when it comes to art.

Yatora's drawing on F-100 too just like how he first saw Mori senpai doing back then and was completely captivated by her art. Good thing that it turned out well and was equally praised.

Seeking your own art as a reference for your other works, well it won't work later on if you're aiming for something like Gedai as explained by Ooba sensei, hope Yatora would figure out a way to improve.

Doing what you love can be one of the hardest things if you're ambitious xD It's frustrating if you can't always build on the previous best achievement. But hey, one step back and two steps forward.

Another nice episode. Got pumped when Yaguchi began drawing the "bond".

It felt like the last leg of the episode was rushed (i did not read the manga), as soon they ended the bonds plot of the episode, they already started the "you just doing the same thing" narrative.

But is a good episode, this anime it's not the most amazing plot, but it's sure a very welcome one

This episode was one of the better ones, they adapted chapter 10 well. Specifically, the "bond" painting scene; first thing this adaptation somewhat elevated from the source material. Also had music playing at the right times instead of the usual bland atmosphere.

Yatora finished painting the "bond" at end of chapter 10, while the "plagiarism" plot is in chapter 11, and ended with Yotasuke's call.

So yeah, in chapter 11, it contains :
- Yaguchi being praised for the "Bond" painting.
- Getting good reviews in prep school.
- Ranked bottom 3rd in competition.
- Getting Anxiety in his room.
- Get a call from Yotasuke.

in a single chapter of about 35 pages.

That's how much of an emotional roller coaster that chapter is.

Amazing. Simply amazing.

Mori-senpai's work was mesmerising as well. I loved in-the-zone Yaguchi. That was really cool.

And I definitely love the soundtrack of this series! OP, ED, and even background music in some parts ^^

And I thought I was getting used to the artstyle, but it seems the art actually improved here. Things felt more alive.

Excited to see more!

She didn't say that as a rule of "yes, he is definetly saying this", but as the fact that the art clearly expresses what the artist was thinking when he painted it. What the artist was thinking is something only he himself will know, but art will always be better when the artist manages to express all of his thoughts into the painting.
TL/DR: Good art cleary expresses what the artist was thinking, but what he was thinking isn't know to the masses, thus it becomes subjective and great to look, admire, and guess at the meanings.
You misread that line of dialogue, which is fine, since even I, myself, am having troubles putting it into words.

Literally why I kept up with the anime having read the manga, putting aside the fast pace - I accepted that already.

And voila,, I was pleasantly surprised by the animation during the 'bond' painting. Very nice.
