Most of the episode went to introducing certain elements of the story eg. Shadow Garden and the shadows in general etc.. Pretty fun episode, I'm really digging the humor. It feels refreshing.

I love Claire's character, she's definitely the most interesting of the plethora of girls we've seen so far. It feels like a more deep voice would've fit her better than a high-pitched one. Anyway she is easily my most favourite character so far, but that's probably because none of the shadow garden has really been properly introduced yet other than Alpha, and a bit of Beta. I hope that each of them receives adequate characterization later on other than just standing there to be pretty. It's only the 2nd episode of course, so it probably needs a bit more time for that.

Right off the bat in the first episode they were already re-arranging some events in the LN's by putting a backstory of Cid's that comes later on in the very first episode. With that in mind, I'm hoping they didn't totally skip over the events that led to each of these members of the shadow garden getting recruited. Perhaps they'll be slowly sprinkled throughout in the upcoming episodes. Or perhaps that's not the case, and none of them have any backstory or characterization, and simply just show up just like that. In that case, that's just not fast-paced anymore, that's just going at light-speed now. Is it really this fast in the LN's, or do they think that most viewers probably just want to skip over all that and dive right into the action?

The important thing though is that while we didn't really get to see it in the first episode, we now get to see where the comedy aspect comes from thanks to this second episode. I was wondering how this was supposed to be a comedy, and now we see that it comes from being a parody of sorts, I think. Which is great, because if this was taking itself seriously, it would've been far too edgy and cringe for my taste and would probably be an easy drop. But it being parody (for the most part it seems, at least) certainly will make this a more enjoyable watch. I mean, with us who had no knowledge that this was a parody in mind, we would've been expecting the obligatory cute waifu slave trapped in the cage, but what we got was a

BLOB

10/10

Will give this a couple more episodes. If the funny outweighs the cringe and edgy, or if the cringe and edgy is properly utilized to bring out the funny, I'll watch it all the way through.

How much is the anime trying to cover. Would have loved to see more relations between Cid and the girls in his early days
It was never in the LN in the first place unfortunately. The anime adapted it very faithfully without skipping anything.

I must say I was disappointed after this episode. It felt way too flat that I couldn't feel the inner sarcasm at all. What's so great about the source material is that there's always an air of irony whenever Cid is around, but here I feel like they butchered that and making the show feel edgier instead of comedic. It wasn't too bad, but I was very disappointed by the direction so far. Hope future episodes will be better, they have quite a lot to cover.

It absolutely is. The anime just didn't deliver the jokes good enough for it to be funny

This was terrible, but after reading your comment, I tried giving the manga a shot.

Wtf is wrong with the anime direction ? They turn the protagonist into an absolute psychopath, the storytelling is awful, looks like the director had no idea what he was doing.

The first two chapters of the manga made it much clearer, but the way they adapted it into anime is stupid.

I'm honestly worried about the anime direction. I came for the comedy but it seems they butchered it.

A bit dissapoint with parody and comedy side doesnt hit me at all in anime cid "chunibyo" is less than manga for me and to much interaction with the other character which make cid vibe from manga is weaker but this is "anime" i know lol... Prefer manga or ln but still enjoyble for the rest is good visual, battle scene etc... Story a bit fast but still ok... Just surprise with 7 shades on the first episode they showing eta and zeta i think its just cameo but it doest... Well i hope they improve the comedy for the upcoming episode just like manga did

It feels like we're moving really, really quickly... hopefully things will slow down for a bit since they still have 18 episodes before. There was just a ton of lore and plot motivation thrown at us at once. I'm also getting so much isekai déjà vu (funny that Raphtalia is also voiced by Asami Seto), but I knew what I was signing up for when I started this, so it's okay I guess! I'm just along for the ride, really~ It's also hilarious that Cid is constantly dancing between extreme competence and making it all up as he goes along.

Looking forward to seeing where this cliffhanger goes~

The LN is funny in a black comedy sort of way, the manga is more over the top funny. The manga adaptation suits an anime style better if you ask me.

This episode was better than I expected. They did a good job of not bogging the anime down with the harem, we weren't introduced to most of them. Mc is a disappointment though. Not impressed he immediately knew about magic the instant he was reborn and essentially all he's been doing is playing around. His fights were cool but he's essentially playing hero, or more like a bandit looting bandits. Then there's also the fact they didn't even bring his sister home. You'd think they'd have scoured the lair yet his sister returned by herself. Seems like they skipped over some stuff too, with that rumor of him healing his sister from being possessed. Wish the anime would explain what it means by possessed because he thought Alpha when she was a rotting blob monster might be possessed.

Today's episode is Mediocre. It's hard to spot the comedic moments in a serious tone, not to mention the pacing is so rushed, and they dared to skip ONE KEY Comedic scene that REALLY hooks me to this series and my fondness towards Cid's personality (and possibly many others). that is Cid's Indomitable Will of Idiocy in searching for magic powers before he reincarnated.

After watching this episode and knowing the director only has experience in action anime, expect the next 18 episodes will have fewer comedic elements and be more focused on the action scenes. This will make the anime generic like today's episode. I'll stay for 2-3 more episodes until Cid reaches the High-school Arc, should be a ton of comedic moments there, but if they can't deliver the comedy well. then it's an easy drop.

I have a feeling this anime will be one of the biggest disappointments of Fall Anime 2022.

As an LN-Manga reader, this is sad indeed.

lmao, it’s funny that some people don’t seem to have realized how OP the protagonist actually is. I see posts here that seem to think he’s weaker than his sister lol. Regarding the comedy, it doesn’t have to be over the top to be funny… the protagonist isn’t a clown in the LN unlike the manga.

The animation studio is turned one of the best light novels & manga to hit the shelves into an absolute garbage fire for this episode. The blatant ignorance of impactful scenes that are depicted in the anime, combined with the absolute plain character design (not in the ironic funny haha way), combined with a poor choice in scenes, like why did you cut out the whole exposition of the slime suit? Not to mention this is the exact opposite art style that the manga shows, it makes the Eminence in Shadow look like the Eminence of Midgets with how short he looks in the fight scene, and why is there no references to the moon? Also the masquerade masks were a huge artist point in the series, and made Shadow Garden stand out with elegance under the moonlight, in both a comedic and cool way. The lack of atmosphere is a horrendous stain on the series, I hope future episodes look back at this one and say "I don't want to end up like him."

People who don't get the point no.1 The shadow garden was not yet that well-known meaning that the mask is not yet incorporated into their attire. 2. They are portrayed as kids during this time of course there will be a difference in attire. 3. They are adapting the LN adaptation which has a different tone of humor from the manga. Probably learn how to observe first before calling it garbage or just drop the anime in general :) and don't stress yourself lmao. Also they are 13 what do you expect,

Furthermore, people are over exaggerating calling it not funny. It's called dark and edgy humor meaning there will be a difference in comedy in the anime compared to the manga and the funny part is not even touched yet which is the magic high school scene. And also there is a difference between the perspectives of the mangaka and the LN with regard to humor.

2nd Furthermore, the comments here say the joke was missed. Mind if I asked how would you portray and translate those scenes into the anime itself? I felt the humor of the manga is better because we are creating and imagining the scenes of it being portrayed I felt the anime's humor is unique because the character is overly aware of its BS while others are taking him seriously.

3rd the pacing is bad. When reading chapter 1 of the manga I felt the pacing is fast both in the manga and the anime.

Much better and entertaining than the previous episode. Even though I am an anime only, I can relate to those who said the comedy potential was not maximum delivered. Some comedy moments could be more funny if executed properly (better transition, voice performance, sfx, etc). But in the end I still really enjoyed this show.

I am waiting for the next episode and not gonna drop this show. For those who couldn't laugh or find the comedy, try to imagine the MC as a clown. It worked for me, I laughed every time he and his mates said "Shadow" lololol. If you watched a clown performance in a serious mode, then of course that clown won't entertain you but irritating.

The set up for the rest of the season really started here. With seeing all of the shadows together, and getting to know Cid more. A very strong base for everything to come.

Was enjoyable to watch, and I was excited during the battle(s). Also, the sound design in this show is amazing and has some absolute bangers of fight songs.

This series really feels like it's skipping a lot of information. Even from 2 episodes, the flow of the story feels choppy and incomplete. I know our mc is supposed to be a chunnibyou, and I really didn't see any chunnibyou-ness until this episode. I know in the first episode we saw him save the girl and make that speech about wanting to protect others, but that didn't give off "Dark Flame Master" vibes. Really any normal anime character could say that and I wouldn't write them off right away as being a chunnibyou.

I've read all of Overlord and am familiar with how much info is skipped by Kadokawa in its anime, but this series feels especially like they skipped a lot. If it shows promise I might pick up the LN and see for myself later on.
