Godammit Clannad, making me cry again! Why do you have to do this!? Was quirky high school antics not good enough? Sure, everyone grows up and has to face real life eventually, but why... why does it have to be like this? I want to go to sleep happy, not thinking of the words “the only places where its ok to cry is in the bathroom and in daddy’s arms.”

One of the best episode for this series. 10/10, 5/5 or whatever rating you can have this one is Masterpiece!!! That Tomoya and Ushio moment is very touching. Finally he has able to cry all his sadness that he felt after nagisa died, plus he has able to find his motivation for living again... Beautiful!!!

But what made me so LOVE this episode is when his father's mother have some talk with Tomoya. While watching i am so intereted upon what Tomoya reaction is. Because for me one of my wish is that his father and him will have a reconciliation or understanding at each other. And thanks to this one, finally he has able to understand what his father has been through after that accident (where his wife has died)...

Okay so after reading A LOT of the comments I feel like I need to go back and re-watch the episode that I just finished watching. Yes, it was a good episode. Yes, it was very heartfelt and touching. But nowhere near as emotional as ep.16 when Nagisa actually dies giving birth to Ushio.

Maybe the combination of Tomoya and Ushio coming together, Tomoya redemption and Nagisa's remembrance is what really got people. Like I said before, great ep. but ep.16 far more emotional.

Easily the best episode so far. Nagisa's death made me very sad but the final scenes between Tomoya and Ushio actually brought tears to my eyes. Fantastic stuff.

I rewatched the last 8 minutes of this episode five times this morning and it never failed to make me cry. Shigatsu is still my pick for saddest anime overall, especially because it sticks with it until the very end. However, this is probably the single most touching episode I've ever seen.

Feels train hit hard, but the setup just got even more ridiculous. Tomoya not only neglected his own child for 5 years, he also doesn't know what's happening to his father and he forgot he has a grandmother. How do you even call a guy like this?
Looks like his father was trying so hard, he run out of steam before Tomoya grew up, we are probably going to get some kind of closure concerning him.

The most touching parts are 1) When Ushio tells "The only places I can cry are in the bathroom ... and in daddy's arms !" And 2) When they're on the train and suddenly he and her start crying at the same time

Those 2 times I cried everything out that I had (although there wasn't much left after Nagisa died) So Sad !!!!!!!

At first I was going to write how Ushio saying "robot" was the best part of this episode, but then one of the most moving scenes in all anime happened before my eyes. This episode in particular made me realize how truly excellent this series is.

Well, that certainly shines a new light on Tomoya's father. I knew all along that he cared for his son, however, Tomoya never appreciated it. The toy had quite a lot of sentimental value to her, so of course she really really wanted to get it back. She's probably been listening about her daddy for as long as she can remember, from Sanae and Akio. Great that they're starting to get along like they should've gotten along. Very very sweet.

This episode really brought me to tears. Just when I thought After Story had reached its emotional peak, it outdoes itself. That scene at the flower meadow as Ushio cried and Tomoya apologised to her, embracing her, brought tears to my eyes. It feels so sad that all this time Ushio had always wanted to be with her father and that she had been lonely.

That scene on the train was tragically beautiful too. As Tomoya started crying remembering Nagisa, I couldn't help but be tearful too. And when Ushio started crying too I just couldn't handle it anymore. She's finally hearing about her mom.

History repeats itself really. I didn't expect Tomoya's father's story to be like that. It mirrors Tomoya's so well. But he worked too hard and it makes me feel bad that accidentally that led to Tomoya growing more distant from him, despite what he had sacrificed. But I'm glad that Tomoya met his grandmother (kudos to Sanae for planning all this). It put me back onto the right path, made him realise what he had to do and made him realise how much his father sacrificed for him. And how much he could see his father as an example, and become a better father for Ushio.

That scene where Tomoya holds Ushio's hand in his and they meet Nagisa in that white space, it felt like Nagisa was really seeing them and happy that they were together again.

This is probably the gazillionth time that I'm saying this while watching this amazing series, but this is yet again the best episode so far. So touching, emotional, heartwarming. Can't wait to see more and see how their lives progress, and seeing more of Tomoya with his daughter Ushio.

Nagisa, I still miss you :(

Wow. I thought the last couple of episodes were super emotional, but geez - this one hit me like a truck! I cried more in this ep than when Nagisa died! So raw and beautiful. And Tomoya finally beginning to not only get close to Ushio, but to understand his father, too.

Don't want to sound so insensitive but if all Tomoya needed to get his shit together was a talk with his grandmother, why not doing it sooner instead of having him neglecting his daughter for five years?

And by the way, if Naoyuki's situation was so rough, why didn't his mother help him raising Tomoya?

This said, it's not that I dislike the episode (it wasn't that spectacular either, being honest) but if it was that "easy" to make Tomoya realize he was being a pathetic mess, the 5 years period seems more like an excuse to add more drama than necessary.

Anyways, pretty decent episode overall. The execution during those last minutes at the sunflowers field was great and particularly, the part with Ushio saying she only cried in the bathroom was truly devastating.

I think you're right. Episode 135 of Hunter x Hunter is sky-high as well -- probably 2nd highest on MAL with around 95.5% 5 stars. Both deserve it, really.

Actually, 2'nd is ep 19 of Kimetsu no Yaiba (Demon Slayer), Hinokami, with a total of 95.66% 5/5 ratings.
So I believe Hunter x Hunter's would be 3rd.

My mistake, episode 54 of AOT has a total of 95.83% 5/5 ratings.
I believe ranking any of these episodes would be disrespect to those which are even greater but we don't know of.

There are a huge amount of episodes scored more than the two you just mentioned, I think, Gintama has around 10 of them, Aria has 2 or 3, the list goes on... But yeah, this Clannad AS ep has the highest rating of them all.

I know this episode has far less ratings, but episode 13 of Aria the Origination has 96.33% of people who love it, based on over 600 ratings, so that's very close to episode 18 of Clannad: After Story.
