Would you by chance be able to explain a little about your second paragraph to me? I’m confused because, how would anyone be able to push all the debt on Kokorogi in the end, when from their perspective she would be able to also choose no and cut her own debt in half. and then all of them would be tied and equal so how would she be last place?
I don’t get how anyone would be able to try to force all the debt on her to begin with

My prediction last episode was kind of correct. Sadly. Yuuichi did say what he said to increase his debt and "gain trust". And, I still think he could have said anything at all. So, the specific thing he said and the way he said them could have just been avoided!

The characters' personalities don't seem to be well fleshed out. Their behaviours are all over the place.

No one actually seem like friends. I wish we got to see them being friends first, before we saw the friendship getting destroyed. Though, I have a feeling this story is just about the game, and not about the characters. Except, the games are not that good. I keep finding myself comparing this to Liar Game.

That's because this anime literally give you a paragraph of each character's description and thrust them immediately into the tomodachi game without showing you much of their day-to-day interactions. But trust me, keep watching and you'll see their personality flesh out more and more. The writer like to do show not tell, so they would show you what each character is like with their actions and decisions throughout the games rather than straightup tell you from the very beginning. Characters is one of the best thing about this series because all of them are so well-written and have flesh and blood rather than just a cardboard cutout of common tropes. Nearly every character, including the villain and side characters, have character development. It's just very gradual. Like how the long-haired girl Shiho is basically the embodiment of the word
but you don't see that until later games. The focus of this series is on the characters rather than the game. But in the beginning, I understand why it may seem like the focus is more on the game. (and since the adaptation is turning out kinda mediocre with bad pacing and a few skipped dialogues if you really want a great series like Liar Game you should check out the manga which is highly-rated and quite exceptional)

Still enjoyable to watch. Lots of drama and stress that make you curious about what's next.

Expectations are still low. Its early so maybe it'll be a better fleshed out story later on.

I have absolutely no idea how Yuichi's debt got doubled then halved, was it because he was the one to clear the game?

I'm kind of invested, there's a lot of drama and secrets in this friend group and I want to know who decided to torment them, if they're from the group at all.

I suspect every single one of them now, even Yuichi. We don't know what their motives are, it could be that one of them is trying to test how real their friendship is.
I sometimes forget to finish my sentences.

Pile of crap. Random torture of bunch of innocent people for no reason whatsoever.

Game rules are not clear and can be changed any moment. There is no winning strategy because there is no internal logic or even a pretense of fairness in the game. It is obviously rigged from start to finish.

In this episode loss/gain on game squares are not revealed in advance. Places are semi-randomly defined by some "observers". There is nothing to plan and no way to meaningfully control the flow of the game. It is absurdly unfair and players don't really play, they are just punchbags. Any additional amount of debt can be assigned to any of them at any moment. They should quickly run it to the finish ignoring ridiculous "debt" and then let the legal system deal with game organizers.

Figuring out who is "the traitor" is pointless. Betrayal implies that some player deviates from winning strategy that is good for everyone to gain something for himself. But with these rules it is impossible, there is no winning strategy. These people are not much of a friends to begin with and we know next to nothing about them. New "shocking" details can be revealed any moment for fake drama and completely throw off any attempt of analysis.

"Themes: High Stakes Game, Psychological, Strategy Game" - nope, nothing of these. Just a pile of random crap. I don't know why this thing exists.

SPOILER ALERT OF THE NEXT EPISODES:

"Game rules are not clear and can be changed any moment. There is no winning strategy because there is no internal logic or even a pretense of fairness in the game. It is obviously rigged from start to finish." Well, here you're right but that's the direction's fault to not make a good adaptation, the manga is quite clear about rules.

"In this episode loss/gain on game squares are not revealed in advance. Places are semi-randomly defined by some "observers". There is nothing to plan and no way to meaningfully control the flow of the game. It is absurdly unfair and players don't really play, they are just punchbags. Any additional amount of debt can be assigned to any of them at any moment. They should quickly run it to the finish ignoring ridiculous "debt" and then let the legal system deal with game organizers" You literally just said EVERYTHING that the main character will say next episodes, about how unfair the second game is compared to the first one. He uses the word "unfair" quite a lot when he's telling what's pissing him off about that game. He even says that a game that is completely unfair is boring to watch (calling out the "observers"). I think you are in the MC's head dude. Congrats.

And yes, there is a winning strategy that the MC will use, you just haven't figure it out yet.

In the ending credits she is shown with a huge scar running down the right side of her body. I assume she had an accident and needed surgery for that.

It's funny how after the second ep Im already starting to doubt the game's rules. For what we've seen so far it feels like almost every rule has had some sort of twist in it. There's basically no way of beating this game since the game itself is rigged.
Hate to say it but after 2nd ep I'm already thinking about dropping this.

The pacing on the episodes is so strange, but it's improved for the second one which is nice! Still can't get over the weird CGI for the little mascot, he doesn't seem like he's too difficult to animate :0
Unfortunately Shibe seems like the kind of character thats pathetic and gets brought down to a serious low, and I love those kinds of charas, it's making me want to read the manga a bit!

Dude that's the point in this one. I don't wanna give you spoiler but i'd recommend you to read the manga, everything is better there and the "rigged" part will be answered.

Tomodachi Game is indeed an example of bad adaptation, from excellent materials to a bad script with weird directing, dialogue cutoff and pacing, not to mention animation and CGI.

To anime only audiences, tbh I know it is a huge pain but ngl I recommend u guys to give it few more episode since the winning strategy/ game exploitation and psychological warfare aspects are good enough for entertainment. There are many details left unexplained but it will be revealed slowly since it sticked tightly to the overall plot of the story.

To another audiences, I highly recommend u guys to look for the original manga, its content is pretty top-notch in the Battle Royale type, specifically in the High Stake Game type revolves heavily around psychological and strategic aspect, not to mention the most unique thing which is

Imo, High Stake Game and Death Game fall in to the same category of Battle Royale but I found them pretty different, the former usually emphasizes more on the aspect of strategy and game theory/ exploitation or cheating/ manipulating without getting caught while the latter often highlights the thrilling aspect of life and death, rather than the tightness of overall plots and storyline. So I'm kinda sad when Tomodachi Game is being compared with Squid Game which has been popular recently due to the global lockdown, they are good in their own ways but very different. (Sorry SG's fan, I'm a hater of that, I did watch the show in honesty and it was a good show but since Psychological/ High Stake Game/ Death Game/ Battle Royale is one of my favourites, I couldn't help but found the controversial plagiarism would have been true since there are so many similarities with As The God's Will or Real Account, etc. in SG)

Finally, I found it pretty funny seeing someone wholeheartedly focus on the "rigged game" aspect while clearly missing a fact that the 5 of them totally had the option to NOT play the game. It should be weird that 4 out of 5 high school kids still decided to proceed to play some shady games after being kidnapped by suspicious but professional organization.
Controversially, the games are rigged with hidden rules for sure, but to me, they are totally FAIR since they are WINNABLE. I see the rigging as the spark cause for distrust and harmony disruption, making it harder for everyone to clear the game together (For example, the one with most debt has to shoulder all of the debt in the 1st game, not clearing the 2nd game means you gain 1M and can opt to not playing the 3rd game while the ones who reach the goal in the 2nd game gain only 0.4M but have to shoulder every debts occured in the 2nd game, etc.). Adding some hidden rules while the game's rules are so simple is actually a plus for ppl with strategic-minded, story-wise. If you can recognize or read them to an extent, you can exploit that and moving your plan forward easier.
Back to my main final point, it's scary af if you are a minor who has no earning exp getting kidnapped by pros and forced to play a game with huge sum of money on your neck but really, they are KIND enough to let you OPT to play the game, and that's the only weird thing to me. It seems dumb to proceed to play the game but yeah, premise and story-wise, it should have been unbeknownst factors, motives and stories behind, and that's the author's job to reveal them later. This genre of story always has that, from bad one to top-notch one (I mean, who tf would reveal his ace of sleeves in just few chapters or episodes?).

so we end on another cliffhanger.

It is a great way to keep suspension for the show and keep the audience coming back however if the third episode does the cliffhanger style again, I'm gonna be pissed.

I don't know who the traitor is since there's so many backstabbings. However I still feel like yuichi is top running for traitors.

I could tell it would end up like this every episode. But I'm going to give a slight spoiler that at least in episode 3. It's been said who the traitor is, because the selling point of this story isn't that the traitor doesn't reveal himself, but that the MC is crazy and brutal. If you notice carefully, mc's subscriber count is very high compared to others because he is a mc that no other character can imitate. If the anime ends, the mc's followers will probably exceed 10000. At the end of the 3rd game in the manga or I'm guessing is the 8th episode in the anime. You will know how this mc is different from other mc. If you can't wait I recommend to read manga. The manga's lines are much better than the anime. But the anime is not bad. I like Yuichi's psychotic expression that the anime staff made.

Why are they all getting mad each other for liking people. If a girl I liked also liked my best friend, then that's okay and I wouldn't get mad. She's not my property or something and can make her own choices.

Very weird seeing people get mad at each other for who they like. If there was cheatibg involved I could get behind all the anger.

And why is plastic surgery, medical or not, a "bad" kind of revelation?

These type of murder mystery game anime always get a shot from me. But the start was pretty fast paced. There is no real connection with the characters yet (both viewer to characters and characters between each other). I hope it is intentional but so far I feel like they should put more effort into showing why they are friends (emotional bagage) to make things more heavy. Its about their friendship after all. The stakes feel pretty low right now and it would be nice if they can create a feeling for the viewer that makes them care about them being friends. Not all in one episode ofcourse.. but they seem to gloss over it rn.

Throughout the episode I feel like they wanted us to be like 'omg nooooo that's terrible' but it all feels very... Blank? Hope they can create this. The setting is interesting though. I will definitely give this another 3 episodes at least.

Pacing got a lot better. But the rest of my previous comments remain.

I am not giving a shit about these characters at all. They are throwing love confessions out like its nothing and I couldn't give a rats ass. If a character would die next episode... Then what? There is no reason for me to actually care about these characters. The show tells me they are friends, but I havent seen any of that whatsoever. To me that completely throws away the reason to care. And I have a feeling with something called "Tomodachi game" that I should care?
The second thing I noticed is that they can literally throw in any horrific detail in the game or about a character and it would be completely legit. ...Because we have no sense of boundarjes and stakes, or do we know any of these characters. I guess floating comments of online viewers in the sky is considered normal in this world.
Will I continue? Well yes because I want to give this show a chance.

My comment wasn't really about having a take, more that the previous posters take is based on insufficient information.

The irony of that is it's the same as the behaviour we see in the show

If I had to have a take I'd say the key is understanding the way information flow is being manipulated, but of course I also don't yet have enough information to support that take ;-)

ikright? I read manga after watching 1 and 2 ep , finsihed it in 3 days and boi what an absolute banger that is but after comparing manga to this i hate to see it but they failed at it miserably, also a lot of important context is being cut out , wonder why they're doing that because they should have had plenty of time to put it all in place because the manga isn't even completed yet

I can already tell he's bat shit crazy considering in the first episode he had to decide between "Money" and "friends" and the fact the old man looks like a gangster. I'm betting that he isn't the kid father (grandfather maybe(?)) However I feel like the old man is a yakuza member and took out MC under his wing for a spell after losing his parents since it looks like his mother was in the hospital, so the last thing she said was "Friends are the most important thing in this world" and after she died he met the old man who helped him and said "money is the most important thing in this world" however my only problem for myself in this theory is that the old man is shown before his mother, unless the writer is just trying to throw me off from my potentially right theory.

Maybe I'm half way, maybe the old man was just some no body who gave our MC some advice on life. However the old man still remains me od a gangster.

Looking forward to next episode aswell. The cut to Kokorogi screaming makes the third episode likely to reveal some juicy details. Will keep watching.

I always suspected that brown hair girl since episode one, I suspected everyone even the Mc himself but I suspect that brown hair girl more. She feels like a pick me, too bad none of the guys like her that way. She probably was screaming cuz Yuichi doesn’t like her back
Im sure there is gonna be some juicy details next episode due to that ending with her screaming. Look forward to next episode.

Loved it!!! Can't wait for episode 3. It is kind of clear to me that Yutori wrote that entry about Shiho. She is jealous about Yuuichi.
Think so? Well guess we will find out next episode. Im not entirely convinced it was her that wrote that about Kokorogi.

My immersion went out the window the moment Yuichi was allowed to stay behind, stood there for half an hour with ANOTHER character (the pretty girl) and THEN ANOTHER CHARACTER (glasses guy) is seen eavesdropping. Which means that the Doll was cool with only bringing the shy girl and the blond guy to the next game and neither of these two were bothered by their friends not being around.

This... this is an excellent point! I hadn't even considered the weirdness of this story framing, but you're totally right. What ARE the other two doing?

My beef with this episode is just how completely unrealistic the character interactions are, especially in light of how it breaks THEIR OWN CONSISTENCY.

Like, okay. I don't know about all of you, but I can't think of a single high school girl whose friend goads his other male friends about something so personal and private as her underwear color who would just... shrug and accept it when he really weakly says he was just trying to change up the tone/mood. Really? You think teenagers have that good a grasp on their emotions that a friend being a huge JERKFACE like that would not evoke some kind of reaction? Even if she likes the guy... strike that, ESPECIALLY if she likes the guy, him embarrassing her and demeaning her like that should not result in quiet restraint and then a blushing confession. She'd be horribly hurt by that.

And what I mean by breaking their own consistency is, all right, fine. Everyone maintains silence during the game. But then they all just drop the issue of the aggressive, crude baiting afterwards... and what happens in game 2? All the guy characters FREAK OUT over who she likes. Yet none of them had any choice words after game 1? If they care so dang much over possessing this girl, how are they like, "eh, it's cool man" after game 1?

This to me would be like if you had a heist movie where one character says he stole the others' money. But then is like, "Just a joke!" And everyone's like, "Yeah, that's fine." And ten minutes later another character just walks near where the money stash is and all the other characters suddenly whip guns out and are convinced that guy is about to steal the money. Either you're insecure and care about the money (read: Sawaragi), or you're not and you don't. Pick one!

Sounds like the manga is better. For me, I'm not wasting anymore life on the anime. Manga may be worth a read instead.

This is a refreshingly mature mindset. I wish we'd get more shows pointing this out and showing teenagers in a more nuanced, mature light.

I decided to start watching it with a friend of mine, I gotta say, this has to be the episode where I started losing the initial hook I had for the show. My two friends seemed to remain on board with the premise, but for me this really is starting to feel like 'Flashback: The Anime'. I don't want to be a drag, but it seems like the worst aspects of the things it's based around... i dunno...

idk I think it is kinda unnecessary to make two boys fall in love with sawaragi. It destroyed it for me tbh
Im gonna drop it

It becomes more and more.apparent as to how dumb these characters are.

Firstly girl likes main dude just because, people really going crazy over who dated who and some other game mechanics bs lol.

I don't care about the premise being dumb, but the whole thing after is silly lol.

Lol of course you have love and jealously because of that with Sawagari having the two other boys in love with her and both girls being in love with MC obviously, now the game of life part is kinda interesting with all the revealed secrets (and I expected ridiculous ones that are pulled for extreme drama like this surgery thing xD)

The first game finished and I am now more amused and invested to Yuichi's character. Sometimes he feels like a simple analytic man and sometimes, you'll just be scared to know what he'll do next. Their relationships become more conflicted, thanks to Shiho and the one who wrote the badmouthing. I am not sure if I'll believe her statement about her doubled debt, but her straightforward answer to Makoto about the plastic surgery is noteworthy. Last ep, I thought Yutori is the least evil or the least two-faced among them, but now I think Makoto might be. I'm excited to watch the next ep, given Yutori's agonizing scream.

Plottwist Yuuichi was the traitor all along. So far the games themselves aren't interesting compared to say Kaiji, but still nice to see drama between the bff's unfold.
