I love how the people here are so obsessed with shoving things that completely contradict reality. She wants to be seen as a boy because she was raped. She needs therapy, not enablement.
Even everything about this episode proves she's a girl. She's no different than the rest of them: she likes Momoe (which everyone that's ever loved her was female). She's in the egg world that only females are a part of. Don't get me started on proving that only female humans can get pregnant... I don't need to write anything about that actuality. Move the goalpost and make a million defences that don't actually equate to anything: just because some women are infertile means nothing (that proves that if not infertile, would be able to raise a child in their womb - if not surgically removed or born with a damaged one with a birth defect).
A word doesn't affect common sense or reality: just because you say you're this or that does not make you that. A manipulator can call themselves kind, and a groomer can call themselves friendly: reality does not change who they are, no matter how much of a mask they put on. Who knew you could be straight af but simply say you're not as you have hetero intercourse, or vice versa (though calling yourself straight would be icky amirite?). Sexuality, by that logic, doesn't even exist. Sexuality is just a fairy tale. You can clear-as-day be straight but say you're something else and apparently that's the truth. I don't think many people grew up in households that told them to take everything someone says with a grain of salt (or they ignored the lesson), because a lot of human feelings that we thought have happened are not even real, they are made up by our minds, and humans are totally not impulsive in any way! Not to mention that 14-year-old white girls are impressionable AF, and that is reality.
I sure love my lesbian erasure, good luck finding one when half of them are somehow boys nowadays. Seems more like Kaoru has internalised homophobia, she's clearly not comfortable with anything, even that, when she clearly is a lesbian... or just another one of those girls who like men but finds it quirky solely because Momoe looks like a boy.

The amount of people that are still genuinely imposing and forcing that Momoe is "trans" is saying a lot about these types of people. (Especially before I watched the show, this was literally the only thing I knew about because it was talked about like it was a certainty everywhere). They don't actually care, they just want more people to join them or they get thrown insults that make no sense. It's like people are scaring youth who are uncomfortable (newsflash: we all are because we're not filters) in their bodies, or people who don't conform to 1900s stereotypes, to transition. You wouldn't promote someone who was uncomfortable with how "chubby" their healthy body looked, or someone who hates their nose. That's not how they heal; that makes them, ironically, just AS suicidal, and now they have this complex of never feeling good enough about their appearance and wanting to have surgery again and again and again. All they become is as vain as one could ever be.

Oh no, cringé.

Having the only boy being actually interested Momoe be a girl too feels like quite stupid storywriting decision, no idea where the authors were going with this, unles the irony of Momoe never truly getting what she wans was the intention.
You all need to watch Nami.

Momoe has such poor luck in the romance department. But it would seem she has far worse luck in another area altogether. I was hoping for a scenario when all four of them cracked an egg together. After all, Ai and Rika joined forces in one episode; so why not the whole gang?

I never thought that I will hear sensei loves Ai's mother. I am always dubious with his intentions. The end part is really dark and I feel bad for Momoe. It seems that they will face a formidable opponent.

Why didn't Momoe try to strike back against the unknown attacker. Also, biggest revelation of the show has been evaded in the first couple of minutes in a very stupid way. This is really going to let me down.

I think Thanatos is some kind of reference to Pyramid Head. Looked like it until the wings unfurled and it was a butterfly so maybe not. I think it's thematically relevant but im also reaching surely lol

Everyone interested in Momoe so far has been another girl. Wouldn't be surprised if that destroyed Momoe's confidence in her attractiveness to men, but I presume that the shock value ending there is a more immediate concern for her.

This episode was amazing. First of all Momoe got a date (congrats to her even tho she's a fictional character) issue is that the boy thought she was a boy so not so amazing after all. Poor Momoe it must suck having your hopes out like that. I feel this was Momoe's episode with all the content about her. But she got over it and good on the other girls for helping her out. Next part of the episode was the wonder egg land. This time we got a transgender boy who got raped and got pregnant by the teacher that she trusted. That has to be one of the darkest backstories yet that's bloody horrible and it sucks that this sort of thing happens in real life these people don't deserve it. And then he kisses Momoe and that part was really wholesome purely because of the way Momoe goes "shhh" To her wonder egg pet. And then Momoe finished the game thing in wonder egg land but holy shit was that part fucked up. THE PET DIES FROM THAT MONSTER THING AND THEN SHE IS FORCE FED IT. WHAT IS WRONG OH MY GOODNESS DUDE. that's horrible and now she is traumatized. Lets see what happens to her character and this was probably one oif my favourite episodes yet.

"Pandering is a term refering to the act of expressing opinions in accord with the preferences of a certain group you're trying to appeal towards"

Here you have your trans character:
Are they relevant to the story?
5 minutes of total screentime.
Are they fleshed out in the slightest?
10 lines at best, most of which are hammering down their very existence.
Are they even acknowledge?
Let's dress them in the most blatant reference to the trans flag and yet not even mentionning the word once.
Do they serve any purpose in the narrative?
Nope lmao, Momoe's character already completed this arc and it was swept off by what happens next anyway.
Is the writer trying to be subtle about it?
What about "I was raped by my coach" in the lamest attempt to bring up sympathy.
Was the whole purpose of this episode just to put a trans character to farm twitter impressions and have a people talk about your anime having trans representation because you know those people would never care about how badly written a show is and how terribly handled the them of transidentity is as long as there's just a trans character present?
Yes, totally and entirely.

Wonder Egg Priority is very much all style no substance. It is visually stunning in all possible aspects from chara designs to animation but at no point it ever wants to tell a coherent and interesting narrative. The plot has barely moved an inch in 9 episodes and has introduced more and more mechanics and plot devices while completely forgetting others, like the concept of injuries during their dream carrying out in real life which is never explored past episode 2, also the quest towards finding out Koito's death which was forgotten for 6 eps until this one.
I get that the purpose of WEP was to be an arthouse anime first and tackling many unconventional themes in the process, however the way it handles all its themes is so shallow it feels dishonest to an absurd degree. Neetdom, suicide, single parent household, Hebephilia, Chronophilia, self harm, orphan, bullying, idol culture, compensated dating, homosexual relationships and here gender identity, the anime just CANNOT handle all of these themes effectively in a digestive and compelling manner, therefore everything ends up half assed and all of those are just there to bait people with low attention that the show is really serious and dramatic. Ai's neetdom is never really adressed and when she gets over it, it's never mentionned again, it was never relevant to the narrative, just there for style. Rika's being a junior Idol to pay for her failure mom, not important. Neiru being a prodigy child leading a company, a simple personality trait and a background setup. Momoe struggling with her apperance, a gag that she met a gay dude who thought she was a femboy rather than a girl, it's all so meaningless, just think about it, why isn't the date shown at all? The writer wants you to feel like it's important to the narrative, but it isn't shown and just told afterwards. That's not how you tell a story, we have to follow the events as they're taking place not summarized after they happened, which is the case for like 90% of things happening in this show.

Really cool episode, and I'm starting to understand the reason why the second half of the show is so divisive. Is it exploring ever theme it's bringing to the table in depth? Probably not. Is it being melodramatic and taking some shortcuts? Probably.
But should it be judged much more severely on the quality of its writing because it decides to bring up gender normativity seriously? I don't see a reason why. Tons of shounen are written much worse than this, but somehow it's not a problem as long as they're retrograde and non-challenging? Yeah, I don't buy for a second that people have a problem with the writing here.

I was irked at the sexist remarks/undertones in the show up to that point, but it's relatively clear now that it was in fact part of the themes the show is trying to deal with, rather than some kind of authorial statement regarding genders. It's an honest-to-god mahou shoujo, with all the baggage that comes with the genre, including sex and gender issues and queerness.

@Deathko Judging by interviews and posts, they simply could not adequately finish the show within the boundaries that the producers gave them. The same thing happened with another similar show, which, according to the director, was killed by the lack of a second cour. Otherwise, I'm always surprised by the Western habit of slapping the mahou shoujo label on any female-focused urban fantasy with henshins, but oh well.

@RobertBobert Well, it has girls, it has magic, it has transformations, it has weird beings giving them powers, it has animal mascots... I'm not that much of a purist, and anime isn't metal. If it has girls and if they're magical, I'll call it a magical girls show :p

@Deathko Not every paranormal element is magic. You could just as easily call it tokusatsu because of the henshins and monster of the week formulas. It's just an obsession with trying to fit everything into a label.

@Deathko No, I just don't understand the American obsession with mahou shoujo. I can understand when people call any show about friendship yuri or BL, or when people call any show with multiple love interests a harem. But the American passion to write any show into mahou shoujo at the slightest opportunity is truly astonishing. You love Utena, and yes, I've seen people call her mahou shoujo too.

@RobertBobert Ikuhara literally kickstarted Utena because he didn't have the creative liberty he wanted in Sailor Moon lmao. It is 100% a mahou shoujo, and trying to nitpick it out of the genre out of some weird mahou shoujo puritanism is just going to be boring, don't go there.

My point stands, you really need to get into metal.

@Deathko He wanted more creative freedom, not more freedom to make mahou shoujo shows. You're just hiding behind accusations of puritanism to justify abusing labels whenever possible. This isn't the first time I've noticed this tendency in you, though.
