Always had this series on my radar from hearing about it from time to time, and now that there will be a new movie this year maybe it'll be a good time to jump in.

What is the best watching order for this series? Of course I assume the
Neon Genesis Evangelion anime comes first but what about after that?

Tv series followed by End of Evangelion. And then you can watch the "You can not" movies. Basically in airing order.

The Evangelion 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 movies are an alternate take on the TV series. The first movie is like a recap of the first few episodes of the TV series, but the second and third movies deviate from the original so they can work as a standalone series. But it's best to watch the original first to get an idea of what's going on.

I like how optimistic you are. ^^

As for your question, the previous answer is right. I also suggest you to watch the stand-alone TV series, and then the theatrical End of EVA if you feel like you want a complement to the end of TV (or a few nicely animated scenes).

Have a good time.

So I finished Evangelion a while back ago but I wanna watch The End of Evangelion. I heard the three movies are recaps but do I have to watch them? Or can I skip them and just go straight into Death and Rebirth. I don't want to miss anything but I also rather not waste my time.

Watch the end of evangelion (alternative ending, better than the original), don't bother with death and rebirth (recap built from TV show footage) and watch the rebuilds (1.0, 2.0, 3.0) if you care enough (retelling of the original series with brand new animation, story diverges greatly after a certain point, kinda like the macross movies).

Also, once your done with End of Eva, feel free to watch the Rebuilds (1.0, 2.0, 3.0 and 3.0+1.0 whenever it comes out). They start off more like retelling of the original show, but they diverge at a certain point with an alternate ending.

So just watch The End of Evangelion then 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0?

No it starts at the end of episode 24. It's an alternative ending that came out as a response to the controversy surrounding the original ending. A big part of the film is commentary on the whole controversy.

Watch from the beginning, but know that the story ends on episode 23. The last 3 episodes are weird and almost like a contemporary, psychological artsy thing that doesn’t really seem to make any sense. The creator made the episodes in an effort for the audience to focus on the characters flaws and shortcomings, because fans were really focused on “who’s the hotter female character” at the time…even though they are underaged lol.

Regular order, but if you don't feel sastified with the ending of the tv series then watch end of evangalieon. Then after that you can watch the movies which is first a repeat and than transitions to an alternative story/ending.

In...order...

You watch NGE then EoE then leave a really big gap until you hear the news that the fourth rebuild has actually arrived in the west (going on prior experience you can expect that some time in the next millennium) then you watch rebuilds, which will either completely dissapoint you compared to the original or make you happy that Anno seems to be in a much better place now😂👍

The story doesn't end, it just becomes more introspective. It was always character driven, the main plot was just set dressing. EPs 25 and 26 are in a way the entire story. Also you can watch EoE if your looking for a more straight fowards version👍

I personally say to watch the original show first from start to finish, people say to not watch the last 3 episodes but I’d strongly recommend to do so as they provide some very striking scenes even though it takes a while to get there. It is then optional to watch the Death and Rebirth movies as they are mostly recaps and the extra scenes and tracks that are added are pretty irrelevant, watch it if you want to refresh yourself of the important moments. Then, watch the movie The End of Evangelion, it is arguably the best thing to come from the franchise and it provides a cohesive ending to it. Finally, the Rebuild of Eva movies are optional too, you can watch them if you liked the franchise overall, they mostly provide different viewpoints of the franchise and alternatives(except for the first movie which is a remake of the first episodes).

I recommend watching the main season then EoE but if you aren’t into the psychological stuff then the remakes are more up alley since they’re more action driven.

Watch the full original series, then End of Evangelion. End of Evangelion takes place just after episode 24, at the same time as 25 and 26. Don’t skip those episodes though. You can skip death and Rebirth and Death (True) because they’re just recaps of the original series. Then there’s the rebuilds which are 1.0->2.0->3.0->3.0+1.0

Watch the original show; all episodes from 1-26. The last two episodes of the show are not contemporary and although it’s the intentional ending the creator had for the show, fans didn’t like how cryptic and weird, both visually and how it’s written, which they were.

Now, I still recommend to watch those last two episodes, but the film End of Evangelion is meant to be an alternate take and in the eyes of many the “true” ending of the series. This ending of the series is the favorite of many because it’s just as experimental and striking, if not more, than episodes 25 & 26 but it doesn’t quite answer or discuss the same topics as those two episodes dedicate themselves to. And I’ll just say, despite this film being the preferred ending by a majority of people, especially non-fans, the conclusion is not one that gives away a lot of answers.

So because of there being so many fans of the series and so much money to be made and a long story to do with the original creator and the studio he made Eva under he decided to part ways and make a complete alternate take of the show from the very beginning, with the only truly similar portions of the show taking place in the first film of the four. I recommend watch these four films, known simply as Evangelion, after watching the original series. I believe you’ll get more out of them if you’ve watched the show and already have certain expectations. If you’re just trying to watch whatever gets you a more “satisfying ending” then you are not centered around the journey, which I think is more of the point rather than the destination, y’know?

There’s a lot to like about this series, especially if you’re into introspective shows, shows that are genuinely different from a lot of other shows (especially from this period), a show with a more believable cast of characters considering the setting and world they’re living in, something that has said to help people cope with personal trauma, and a show that has fantastic animation then you’ll get a lot more out of this.

There’s also the Death and Rebirth film, but that’s literally a film that recaps the show in a very rushed, incomplete, and condensed way and the other portion of the film is the first 30 minutes or so of the film End of Evangelion. It’s there, but not something to recommend someone unless they just want to say they’ve consumed all of the eva material out there lol.

The last two episodes are the "TV show ending", then End of Evangelion is somewhat of an alternate ending. It's weird, so you'll probably be left confused with both, but just watch the TV ending, then End Of Evangelion. The other four newer movies are called the Rebirth movies, and they're separate. Those are a retelling of the original story with a lot of differences.

Watch evangelion episodes 1-24 , then watch End of Evangelion movie but don't watch the entire movie , stop watching as soon as the giant red ball scene ends (you'll know when you see it) , then immediately close the movie and watch episode 25-26 and thats how I like it , try reading the manga if you want to see the best ending , watch the anime in chronological order if you want depression .

Just watch them in the year they where released, if easier just watch the original series (1995) and quickly after finishing the series watch End of Evangelion (1997). The Rebuilds are optional but really good and very recommend

After nge its End of Evangelion. Then come the rebuild films: 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, and 3.0+1.0 when it comes out.

Death & Rebirth are optional, if you want to watch it watch before End of Evangelion.

Episode 24 of Neon Genesis Evangelion is where the timeline splits off between the tv ending (episodes 25 and 26) and the alternative ending End of evangelion. I would recommend watching both. The tv ending first, and the alternative ending second.

As for the Rebuild movies. You should watch them after finishing the main series, if you plan on watching them at all. They aren’t important to the story of the original series.

Death and rebirth is simply a recap of evangelion, and it’s not needed at all.

So it goes: NGE: episodes 1-26 > end of evangelion > evangelion 1.0(1.11) > evangelion 2.0(2.22) > evangelion 3.0(3.33) > evangelion 3.0+1.0(3.0+1.01)
