The thing about wasting time... you don't know that you've wasted time until you look at what you've done in hindsight and realize you could've done something else, so there's not much point worrying over it. As long as you're enjoying watching anime and the experience of discussing it, there's no problem. Live and let live. |

Probably not. I'd consider anime just as valid as any other TV show, cartoon, or movie, but I don't wanna be the first to admit it among strangers. |

Because on MAL different seasons count as separate series. DVD special episodes that are only a few minutes long also count as separate anime. There are also single episode OVAs/ONAs. Some series are only a few minutes long each episode. Some series are only ten to twelve episodes long. |

I apologize in advance, I don't mean to offend. I respect you dude. People who have burned out, are usually those that spout unnecessary and unwanted logic. Yet you are still watching it and boldly sharing your thoughts. All that's expected of anime watchers is praise and critique the anime you watch as part of our community. Not the process of watching anime as a whole. Opinion is more than welcome, advice however has to be invited. |

I would say watching anime is not a waste of time if it is something you enjoy, as long as you make time to workout and keep healthy. For me I work 6 days a week, still keep fit, do my other hobbies and I still have time to watch 1-2 hrs of anime every weekday and 5-6 hrs on the weekend. |

I believe that consuming too much entertainment per day is a waste of time. The key thing here being "per X time scale". There is no set limit as to how many hours per day is "too much" for someone but it generally depends on your other daily activities and how stressful/boring they are. So as long as you can balance your life well without being skewed too much in favor of anime, it does not matter if you have watched thousands of shows. |

Eh, only if you didn't enjoy it. We can't be productive all the time, so there is nothing to feel bad about for having a hobby you spend a lot of time on. I would only be worried about it if it was preventing you from taking care of other aspects of your life. |

Doesn't people watch anime to waste their time. Don't take my opinion in the negative way. People usually watch anime to spend the time when they are doing nothing so people are watching to help them waste that time via having entertainment. |

Tbh, although I only watched 100 shows, I feel like I've wasted a bunch of time I could have put into something else. Especially studying. In the end, It's a form of entertainment but people take it to different levels, it's fun to watch a show when you have free time or whatever, but when it starts affecting your daily life then that's where the problem starts, for instance : if you watch anime instead of hanging out with your buddies, watch anime instead of studying and etc... I'm still going to watch anime because it's fun when I watch a good show, but too much anime is a problem. Of course there are other things that people can do instead of spending that much time on anime but not everyone wants to do anything. An example of this can be like people who don't like working out, people who don't like to work out would rather spend their ''free'' time watching the new episode of their new show they started watching rather than working out. Personally, I like to watch anime but I don't let it get in the way of my irl life. I'd rather go out, socialize with new people or old friends, work out, study or do stuff that would help better my life because if I chose anime over those options, then PERSONALLY I think I'll miss out on a lot of stuff I wish I've done later on in life. In 30 years time, (assumption) most people would probably regret their choice of sitting in home binging a show rather than going out and having fun somewhere else with other people since you make memories there but where as in anime, you don't make as much of memorable memories. IMO |

It depends, do you have goals in life? If yes; have you reached them or some of them? '; If not; are you working toward making them or are you a dreamer?! If you did your part and made whatever goals you set in life, be it some of them or most, and you can live your life without too many worries, than doing anything that doesn't benefit your economy or sociality is maybe mediocrity at best, but it is still not a bad thing. after all it is what you chose to do, and it is for your own entertainment and interest. The thing is, that at the bottom line, everyone act, first-most, upon their own interest and not those of others (in 99% of times). so, doing anything that promote your interest level, be it some sort of entertainment, a job, a family or anything else is okay, and no one could blame you for doing so. |

I have a goal in my life which is to lose some weight and add more muscles. So, when I checked that my weekly anime this winter is 9 hours a week (roughly calculated), if I had just exercised that 9 hours instead a week. I wonder how fit I'd be in a couple of months. I've had that goal for like 15 years now, yet, I haven't done shit. Sort off. I do go to gym but the big fat "WHAT IF" I wouldn't have watched anime and instead would be in the gym those several, more extra hours a week. I kind of half regret it, not getting my shit together. But still, anime watching is not a waste of time. If it's during some down time. |

Of course as time passed I started watching less and less anime, but now in lockdown I had a lot more free time, so I spent a lot of it watching anime. And I do have a job, thank you. It's not that because I've been watching anime for the past 18 years that I don't spend my time doing other things. I did spend too much time watching anime, so that's why I created this thread, hoping to raise some awareness about the fact that watching too much anime (when it starts overruling your other hobbies, activities etc), could end up being something you regret. |

To an extent, yes. Anime isn't really productive, watching that many anime is totally fine, but in the time that you watched 1600 anime, you could probably have learned 20-30 different languages, learned many new skills, improved many things you were weak at, at the end of the day, anime is a hobby. You might learn some important themes and messages from it, but besides that, unless you're an anime YouTuber or you work in the anime industry somehow, you won't gain anything from it as a casual anime fan. Although watching anime is a good timekiller to procrastinate, and in the end all of us will die, whether we're rich or poor, productive or not productive. So it doesn't really matter I guess, we don't matter. So yeah keep doing it, it won't matter in the end anyway. |

Let's be honest here if someone watching anime instead of doing "productive stuff" then he doesn't care about it. There is an obvious difference you know between chill watching of anime and learning something practical (it's always a long and tough way if you are not a natural genius of course). Practical things aren't hobbies for most of people but some kind of self-training or pre-work. If we talk about people in a stress then they will just ignore practical part. Roughly speaking It's the same like saying to a fatman that instead of eating ice cream and drink Cola he should run three laps around his house since it's obviously more healthy. SVTK-117 said: You might learn some important themes and messages from it, but besides that, unless you're an anime YouTuber or you work in the anime industry somehow, you won't gain anything from it as a casual anime fan. There is a such thing as professional deformation after all so after you look at your hobby from professional practical angle your hobby will become a work very fast and you won't get any joy from it anymore. This is why the farther your hobby is from your daily work, the better. |

I wish I could 'waste' my time with Anime like this. Only a few weeks ago I got time to watch Animes and I feel happy that I can enjoy it again. Maybe finished 10 Animes over the last year and regret it tbh. It's a part of my hobby and I noticed how less time I got to design my freetime last year >< |
