| I'd argue that they're among the least important characters in harem anime when it comes to characterization, and work best to be a method to draw out the various appeals of the female cast as opposed to being focused on too heavily and pulling attention away from the harem itself. I think that they should be an MC in name-only and function primarily as a support role, basically. Other people are free to do as they please, I guess, but when I'm watching a harem anime, the least of my worries or attention is going to be towards the one fucking guy, and it seems borderline senseless with how often people put the greatest amount of emphasis on this role relative to the genre they're talking about. There is a reason they're rarely featured on promo material, in merchandise, et cetera. A good MC with a shit harem is still exceedingly likely going to be a bad harem anime, just one that's most likely just succeeding in other areas if it reaches any kind of acclaim. On the other hand, a bad MC with a good harem is still much more than just merely capable of being a good harem anime - I'd go as far as to say it's still more than capable of excelling in the genre, even with a shortcoming like that. Because they're primarily just needed to provide some kind of ecchi or showcasing the girls in romantically-inclined situations and contextualizations. Outside of that, watching a narrative unfold around them, watching them develop and grow, or coming to understand and care for the harem MC is hardly one of the defining characteristics of the genre. I'd say it's generally better for a show's harem elements to push them aside and use them as a tool for these things than it is to put an excessive amount of focus on them. Ideally there'd be no weak links, sure, and to say it's unfair to discuss a character or a role the character plays in a series would be a heap of bullshit, but yeah - I'm not exactly fond of the emphasis that the community tends to put on Harem MCs relative to the anime they're in whenever it comes to discussing these types of series. It often just comes off as overwrought and completely lacking in any attempt towards nuance or understanding, purposefully or not. It's a non-issue being pressed as this major concern or holistic shortcoming that's the ultimate downfall of the entire genre. It is insane. Wanted to get that off of my chest before listing any I consider to be the best :P My favorites would be Issei from DxD and Haruka from Yosuga no Sora, for entirely separate reasons. Honorable mentions to Aikawa Ayumu and Kurusu Kimihito. |

| I like Yuuji, Grisaia is the only harem where I like the MC more than any of his girls. Tho eventually Mushoku will become a harem, and I guess Rudeus will become my favorite harem MC by default of him already being one of my favorite MCs in general. |
