I find it amusing how people are casually telling the MC to break rules/ignore orders from superiors while he's in some sort of military. You know what? There's harsh punishment for disobeying your superiors. |

So much undeserved hate in this thread that I don't understand. In the situation Hiro was in, the only thin he could have done was argued pointlessly only to be shot down and still have mitsuru ride with zero two, or after being shot down once like he was let mitsuru ride with zero two even if he didn't want to. Considering his friends lives were at stake it makes sense. Hopefully later in the season we won't have all these hate comments literally just saying "I hate Hiro because he's Hiro and awful". |

Cool. Awesome. Great. Wonderful. WE GET IT, NO ONE CAN RIDE WITH HER BUT HIRO. If that's the case let him ride again. This is getting on my god damn nerves that it continuously focuses on these other rejects like 666 and Mitsuru. But at least Mitsuru seems to be out of the picture, one less egomaniac we have to deal with. Hiro is officially on my shit list, he should've went down there with Zero Two. I said to myself "Cmon Hiro!" right before his answer, but of course he pussied out. I do feel bad for glasses girl, she's petty cute. Really hope this gets better next week. This is going down hill quickly. |

Trigger has taken a new approach to this one and I quite like it. They've decided to go on a drama route instead of the balls to the wall action. Hiro needs to get his shit together. I hope we get better fights, I Don't mind the drama but we need action too. |

This is going down hill quickly. I find it quite puzzling why some of the people in this forum are so triggered over Zero Two not riding with Hiro. Yeah, we get the whole sex metaphor, and yes otaku's love to have their purity fix, BUT it's not like both of these characters haven't ridden with other pilots. Zero Two goes through her partners like butter and Hiro piloted with 'girl put on a bus' and Ichigo. *shrugs* Ultimately though they're not having sex, they're piloting a fricken robot! It's not even that we have an indecisive lead male. He wants to pilot. His whole life is all about 'getting in the robot'. He just hasn't found a compatible partner yet! I do find it interesting the effect that Zero Two is having on Hiro. It's like in that discussion with him about escaping it made him realize that there might be another option other than being a pilot, or at least a pilot for someone else other than creepy hologram papa. |

In episode 2 Hiro rode with Ichigo despite Zero Two also offering. Zero Two by the way also accepted her superiors decision then. I mean it was the exact same thing in reverse and no one was crying then. But all of a sudden when a girl rides with someone else people explode into rage. |

Mitsuru was a prick, but what Zero 2 did was still inappropriate, she injured him on purpose when they were doing fine. People who rightfully speak of Hiro being in the military like environment following orders being normal should not overlook her going on a rampage when they told her not to, just to send a message. You can't just shoot your fellow soldier because they're annoying. I can't believe Hiro is getting this level of criticism for following orders, and Ichigo remains unquestioned. Not only is her obsession with Hiro something that should of been an embarrassment for Goro as her partner, but now it's even getting to the point that they're failing as a team. Everyone seems to accept the sexual undertones of this story until it applies to how pathetic Goro is being. When Miku's dirt bag partner expressed changing partners, their machine failed, and no one complained because it was obvious his suggestion was a betrayal. People have the nerve to call this episode ntr and cuck over Zero 2 and Mitusuru, even though Hiro and Zero 2 were following orders. But nobody has anything to say about Goro standing around when his partner is obsessed with Hiro and putting herself in Hiro's business when he should be left alone to build his partnership with Zero 2, as is Hiro's choice. If anyone deserves to be called a cuck or a beta, it's for sure Goro. He better be confronting Ichigo about getting her head in the game after her silliness caused them so much trouble this episode. |

I've watched the episode twice now, but I'm still not quite sure what Hiro was trying to achieve or what he was trying to express by letting Zero-Two go with Mitsuru. I wasn't terribly impressed with the episode either. The episode doesn't really let on what Hiro's feeling since, at the beginning of the episode, we see him declare that he "must pilot with Zero-Two." Further, he's shown to be training vigorously immediately before his meeting with Zero-Two. At the same time, he visibly backs down when told that he "can't pilot since he's not a stamen." The problem, @Epicenter, is that the episode doesn't do enough to show the audience that Hiro is "following orders." Indeed, his reaction is akin to a beaten dog; his entire physical posture suggests shame and that he is crumbling internally. Further, and because of the context of the rest of the episode, his reluctance suggests a few additional possibilities: 1. He doesn't trust Zero-Two on some level. 2. He's frightened of Zero-Two on some level. 3. By letting Mitsuru go, fully aware of what Zero-Two can do, he is letting others "be eliminated" from the competition, which suggests a level of malice on his part. However, the most likely reason is that 4. His concern over "being unconscious" during his initial activation with Zero-Two has damaged his confidence enough that he believes that he'll drag everyone else down. Either way, the episode does little to clarify his intent given the mixed messaging throughout. The only consistency we see is regarding Ichigo, whom he asks her partner to apologize to for him, blaming himself. Similarly, Ichigo it's made very clear that Ichigo blames herself for what happened in episode two, to the point that her thoughts and feelings concerning Hiro visibly cripple her performance in the mission. |

I’ve considered point three as well, but I think that’s why 002 agree to go with him. To teach them what happens if she doesn’t get her way. I think she just kills people she doesn’t want as her partner. But I have a feeling MC just wanted Ichigo saved, and making it clear he’s picking her over 002. 002 has superseded ichigo as alpha female. I’m assuming MC and ichigo were the alphas in their little unit before coming to this place, and always assumed they were being paired. He feels back when ichigo makes one last attempt and fails to show her ability to be his partner. |

The trajectory of the plot thus far suggests instead, particularly what with the theme naming, that 002 will still be his final partner. With that said, I fully expect that Ichigo's nascent feelings for Hiro will become a crisis-point by the 12th episode or so. Another thing that struck me about this episode was the interior city. One part of this was the color palette (various orange, black, brown, and white hues) as well as the fact that the children are barred from entering it. The color palette has the unfortunate effect of making the city look like its on fire or almost unlivable, and gives very little sense of how the world works. This is only reinforced by 002's comments, and it's definitely a rather foreboding metaphor for the entrance into adulthood. Overall, the lack of access itself raises the question of what the parasites are being prevented from seeing and what the council of fathers is trying to hide. We already know from the first episode that the Klaxosaurs aren't truly organic beings. We also get the tidbit from 002 about "this plantation's squad being wiped out again." Were it another plantation, that comment would slide by easily, but that it's this plantation's squad specifically suggests all manner of sinister machinations and raises questions about what's really going on with Zero-Two. |

Ichigo is feeling really down after what happened. Zero Two is so good! Definitely the best girl ^^ But for real, i really love her attachment to Hiro. And watching her accept the fact that she has to ride with a different guy because Hiro told her so, clearly shows that. Totally in love with her :3 But i still can't wait for the day that they will allow him to pilot with her |

This was much better compared to the first two episodes. And you can already see the improvement just by staying away from those awful fanservicey scenes. What was her darling gonna name her I wonder. Maybe she was already called by something in the past so she is all cool with her code name. 'Oni (i.e. Demon)' perhaps? Just a thought. Edit: Also, Darling finally realized the world they are in and the world they grew up is wrong. Just following the protocols/orders from the superiors almost cost the lives of his friends and that of that cocky guy who piloted with Horny. This is a prison where the kids are nothing but considered disposable tools. So maybe going out of this place is an option he could consider as Horny told him jokingly which he recalled at the end of the episode. I can smell revolts coming from the 10 kids eventually with all the "Papa" references. Neverland fans will know what I mean. And when it's eventually announced as an anime, fans will realize what differentiates an average story (like this one) to a genuinely good one. Edit 2: felipeliborio said: Seiign said: felipeliborio said: yeah, of course you are Ichigo - 1(ICHI)5(GO) Hiro - 1(icHI)6(ROku) etc... wow, such creativity! much impressed You're right but it's more like (HIto)(ROku), you can't cut ち in half Thank you. It’s actually a good thing this happened. Now everyone can clearly see why Hiro should be the only one to pair with 02. We've already seen that Zero Two's partners get fucked up and Hiro is the only one who can pilot with her when episode 1 showed her previous partner severely hurt after piloting with her, while Hiro piloted and nothing of the sort happened to him. We didn't need another episode just to confirm what was already painfully obvious, it was pointless. It was confirmed to us the audience but not to the other pilots. |

The klaxosaurs being the enemies, monsters, would make the children outcasts of society. So that’s probably why they aren’t let into the city. Though, this explanation does not reconcile why 002, with her physically obvious klaxosaur attributes, is allowed into the plantations. That could be more of a rank, or royalty issue, though. |

I don't see Hiro as a trash MC. I can see how he has trashy elements, but the fact his entire motivation is to be able to pilot a FranXX and he would want to ride one in any given situation, and the fact he gave the opportunity up in order to increase the likelihood his friends will be saved, is nothing less than admirable. I'm certain that his mentality is shaped by a childhood trauma... I wonder who the person with grey hair in the start of the episode was... I quite like how the series is going. It's not predictable for the most part, since I doubt anyone would predict Mitsuru would pilot with Zero-Two in the previous episode, which is great! Although, I have a feeling that the series will end with a massive plot twist that was cut the fanbase in half. Although again, that might be just because I recently finished Devilman Crybaby, haha. |

On the contrary to everyone's dissapointment, I actually enjoyed this episode. They really presented the despair humanity is really in. I agree that the mech design is a bit cute for the setting and that the MC is very shy towards his true feelings; however, this is a tool used by many writers to invoke excitement or attachment to the character when he does step up. |

I disagree regarding the Franxx-klaxosaur relationship though. The mechanical nature of the klaxosaurs suggests to me that they were orginally a tool made by humanity, likely for more efficient extraction of magma-energy (though why anyone would be powering your systems from actual extraction of molten rock, which cools quickly and takes massive amounts of energy to keep heated, as opposed to merely positioning geothermal energy extractors, is beyond me). They then ran amok. |

I've really been enjoying this show so far. Even though some of the characters seem pretty cliché, I like how they've been setting up Hiro and Zero Two's relationship / partnership so far. Since everyone else gets wrecked riding with Zero Two, shit is about to get intense when Hiro finally man's up and takes what's his. Everyone else who gave him shit won't be able to do a damn thing about it because once they realize how powerful Hiro really is, it'll be too late and they will be leagues ahead of everybody else. Definitely interested in seeing where this goes. |

I stuck up for Hiro in the first episode when people were calling him spineless since he did accept her offer to jump in the mech right away the first time. ...but now, after 2 more episodes, my opinion is starting to lean the other way. I'm definitely getting tired of this beta cuck shit where everyone (himself included) refuses to let him pilot and he hands Zero Two over like it's nothing. I dont drop shows, but if they dont put him in that goddamn fucking mech soon this show is definitely going on the back burner until at least the end of the first cour. I see a bunch of people defending the situation, saying Hiro didnt have a choice since Mitsuru was the only official pilot left, and there was protocol, blah blah. That's fucking bullshit. Kids who are able to become parasites are obviously rare. With the situation that desperate, every one of them was going to die. The options were, send in Strelizia and destory the Klaxosaur and save everyone, or let everyone die and the Klaxosaurs destory the mine and take the magma. If push comes to shove, had Hiro put his fucking foot down and said either I pilot the Strelizia with Zero Two, or nobody goes and everyone dies and we lose the mine, Zero Two WOULD NOT have gone with Mitsuru and the people in charge would've been forced to make the decision. Sure the kids are just tools to them, but you think they'd let every single one die right there and lose valuable resources, putting the plantation in danger? Probably not. |

The klaxs are the planets way of defending itself in line with gaia hypothesis. I see it pretty much as a rip off of Final Fantasy 7 with mako reactors and weapons. They do seem mechanical, but the mites/spiders seemed more biological, and they’d have to be in order to reproduce. |

Definitely way too early, but predicting this to be anime of the season. Superb animation, nice mix of characters, crazy world that has potentially crazy cool mysteries, great cinematography (I mean, epsiode 1 was pure art), so far consistent storyline with logical plot progression (okay, this bit's definitely too early to call but wtv). Yeah, calling it now. It's an anime original too! Nothing much has happened besides world-building and relationship stuff since ep 1, but it's definitely building up. Fact is, I definitely feel like the anime is still in the introductory phase. It puzzles me why people are mad at how much of a pushover Hiro is at this point... like... what did you expect? Firstly, he isn't really that whimpy (they've hinted that he was talented enough to be their leader before, and he even gave them all names and was evidently someone the others looked up to). Secondly, like others have mentioned, what could he have done in that situation? Be stubborn and risk his friends' deaths? I wouldn't accept that. Given the nature of the show, the context we've been given, being a stubborn ass at that point would be so terribly inconsistent I would cry for the lost potential of the show. Besides, too many 'hero' characters are way too stubborn as they are. Seriously, sometimes (most of the time, especially irl), being stubborn is a negative trait. It's annoying, and unreasonable, and usually illogical. But "oh by some crazy miracle being stubborn was the correct idea because plot says so" just doesn't cut it for me, even though it's used so often in stories. Finally, even if he was weak, what in the world is wrong with that? The MC in Gurren was also a freaking wimp at the start but holy moly everyone went ballistic after his transformation. Isn't it always the most satisfying when a weak character grows into a mega cool, ultra epic force of nature??? Didn't mean to rant but there you go... A thing I might wanna say that worries me is that the story so far does seem very predictable. Or rather, the writers are being super obvious with the way they've been moving the story. They've been hinting at Mitsuru's jealousy and Zerome's ego since episode 2, and boom, out comes a catalyst for addressing both events. Literally saw Mitsuru's bleeding self as soon as they called the sortie and Mitsuru's team failed to launch. Realised it was a trap and immediately thought that this would be the perfect opportunity for Zerome to royally screw up as soon as they described the assignment and of course it happened. It almost feels like some formula is being followed. I dunno... maybe I was just lucky. I reckon it'll get more wild as the story progresses though. And it's certainly not taking away much from the enjoyment I felt when Mitsuru got pummelled. |

For serious now. Hiro training and giving everything to pilot and you still saying he's a cuck? Really? That's just you being a dumb ass, did you know? Why would he leave his friends (of course I'm talking about Goro and Ichigo, is there someone else who still believing in Hiro?) to death only to counteract his superiors in a dystopian world? He made the most mature decision he could at the moment and that gave Zero Two a chance to prove her point. |

It's baffling why people here can't understand the reason as to why Hiro let Zero Two ride with Mitsuru. -Their friends are in danger and could be killed at any moment -The higher ups won't allow Hiro to pilot a Franxx no matter what -Any more time arguing would just be a waste of time seeing as the higher ups are unbending on their decision So instead of acting entitled and argue with Nana and that other guy, Hiro made the decision of letting Mitsuru ride with Zero Two in the Franxx otherwise their friends could die showing that he valued his friends more than the possibility of him piloting. What exactly makes him a coward and a cuck for doing what he did? Just because he let Mitsuru ride with Zero Two? Jesus Christ would you rather he not let that happen and have his friends get killed by Klaxxosaurs just because "am he darling only i ride with her hurr durr". He made the best decision given the situation since time isn't exactly their friend at the moment. Why don't people get that? |

3 weeks is long enough for this useless MC. They're dragging it off too much. There's not even any confirmation that he helped in piloting in episode 1. It's not actually just that though? I don't think he even run all those things in his mind. See that monologue he made? He was hoping 02 would reject and persuade them more. He just wanted to feel needed. *I'm not saying he wussed out though. I can't make myself like these kids. The only one I like were Goro and that lady black-green robo. |

Something you may been missing about movies and animations. Not everything the character thinks is throw to the viewer by means of a monologue or a dialogue. He did what he thought was right to do on the moment, but it didn't prevent him to like Zero Two giving him attention and believing in his potential. You're not totally wrong. But you're not fully right either. |

Those were just how I viewed them. Though when a character speaks of a reason after an action, those are usually almost always the the motivating force. And in this one, he did. What he said was he hoped for 02 to deny it. Nevertheless, I just hope he actually does something by episode 4. |

What he said was, despite everything, it would be amazing if she contradicted me showing I'm important for her, for someone, for something. Hiro left Zero Two piloting with another person because it was necessary, but he still has selfishness. Not the first human to have a contradictory thought. |

In all seriousness, if you compare the actions of an anime character to all humans, they will never be the first human to have that thought logic. What I am trying to get to is just that all the rage, despite providing faulty logic, were not baseless. In a sense, he was a cunt at that time. *Cant get the right word to describe, sorry for my poor vocabulary. =3= |

Not even partnering with Trigger can keep A1 from doing unecessary fan service. Also... yeah, of course you are Ichigo - 1(ICHI)5(GO) Hiro - 1(icHI)6(ROku) etc... wow, such creativity! much impressed Are you serious? If anything Trigger is the studio that brings blatant, unapologetic fanservice. Trigger's crew was responsible for the ridiculous piloting contraption. ---- I just came to say I really liked this episode and even bumped my rating to 8. |

You say Hiro can't have a contradictory thought for being a anime character? Or he can't use logic for the same? Or are you just saying people don't have this kind of thought or never act with logic? Are you saying everyone in the world never get up on the selfishness and pride to do something that may be necessary? I myself, the guy who always looks down on authorities, agreed with Hiro's decision. And like a real human (look on my D&D sheet if you don't believe me) I can say that in his place, doing the decision he did, I would feel exactly the same about Zero Two. I'm doing the right thing, not being a dumb ass who will cry and argue against my superiors and the authorities, because it's just waste of time and they would die at any instant. BUT GOD I WILL LOVE IF THIS HOT GIRL WITH HORNS INSISTS BECAUSE OOOOOOOOOHHHHHHH GOD I THINK I'M IN LOVE AND I'M SO HORNY TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOD I'M THE BONE OF MY SWORD Not trying to be arrogant or nothing. Just want you to put yourself in Hiro's situation instead of forcing your wills on the character or trying to put so much Kamina on he. I love Kamina, but Hiro is more cool-headed and I can't stop thinking he did a mature decision. |

Next ep is all gonna be about how he feels guilty for what happened to the Mitsuru guy. Hope he puts his act together soon. PD: By the way, does zero two kiss all the other stamen when they ride with her? This is interesting. Today they showed that the girl takes most of the damage, like Miku who took the damage of the robot. But with 02, the guy is the one taking damage? Why would that be? I can only speculate that because Zero Two has Klaxxosaur blood she can tank so much more so if I'm right it's possible that both of them take damage but the female gets damaged more first but it doesn't matter with Zero Two cause she has significantly higher def and hp than her partner so it reaches a point where they can fight so hard that her partner also takes significant damage . |

Wow it's slowly getting hype and excitement...when Zero Two said 'Only you can be my darling' to Hiro, it gives me goosebumps hahaha and I think Mitsuru is only a fool, I hate his personality, he seems didn't have much satisfaction with his own partner and that's what he gets because of his reckless action. Mitsuru should know that the previous partner of Zero Two before Hiro is also a professional pilot, man, and he's just a rookie. Hiro is special, I think and that's why Zero Two like him I think because she can control him completely, not being controlled. I personally like Ichigo, but if Ichigo gets distracted by only that one kiss, I don't think she can be a calm leader again... |

Also this time I find interesting the world where the story takes place and the dynamics that govern it, I do not find interesting the cast and their actions, they are a bit boring. Even at times I appreciate the great work behind the drawings and animations. |
