I dont care. 720p is enough for me. But it beomes really hard for me to watch 480p videos now. Unless for old movies/animes.

Heh, my 480ps average at around 50mb and my 720ps average at around 90mb.

The 480p-s might actually be more watchable than the 720p-s of that size. A lot of less data per pixel gives you worse result than upscaling 480p.

Anyway, I usually get whatever is in the 600mb-1.2gb range. For some, the 1080p encodes are like 2gb, so I grab the 720p, otherwise 1080p.
If you generalize, you're wrong.

I always download 1080p BD if it is available. For airing series 720p since those "1080p" tend to be upscales, so... why bother...

I always download the greatest quality. If I´m going to watch something I´m going to it right.

Those people saying 480p is ok, and they don´t care... oh god why....
Blurry video... low framerate... Low quality image...
That's what happens when they only know streaming sites...
But I understand...I once thought like them... hell, even worse, 360p since my internet was not good.

720p for streaming; 1080p if I'm downloading and it's a genuine 1080p file.

I don't particularly care for the most part though. 720p is more than good enough for me. I've had to settle for 480p a lot in the past so the quality of 720p is perfectly fine.
It's an entirely different kind of flying, altogether!

You 480p peasants make me sick. I watch on a tiny monitor with some moderate to severe pixel burn right in the middle of the screen and yet I still manage to find the shred of self respect necessary to demand 720p.

TV Rip:
720p

Blu-Ray:
1080p

It will only matter when it comes to Blu-Ray. TV rips are just 720p and the so called "1080p" are just upscaled 720p versions n thats that.

So if its on going then just stick with 720p

Another thing to note is while on Blu-Ray, the jump between 720p and 1080p won't seem like THAT much of a jump when compared to the jump you get with Live-Action Movies or TV-Shows. That's how I've been seeing it anyway.

Some anime's REALLY benefit from the jump but not all.

I stick with 1080p for Blu-ray whenever possible though. 1080p for TV rips are just not worth it since there is 0 difference. Its smaller with the same quality.

tbh not really. i'm easy to please. So long as something is clear enough for me to understand what is going on and has decent subs I can watch it. Years of watching obscure crap on weird sites gave me high tolerance for terrible quality.

I usually prefer 720p > 1080p.
The filesize is significantly smaller, so I have to upload less long until I'm satisfied with the upload (at least twice the filesize).

Also I read here at MAL that many 1080p-s are just upscaled 720p-s. (a member I think I can believe them)

The little stuff I'd like to see in 1080p is the stuff I mark for buying the bluerays.

Yup.
For some old stuff I even only found 640x480 resolution files - fine with me, if I really want to watch that show.
Like if the music is really that good, it does not matter if it is available in mono only …

For TV shows, I don't see much difference between 720p and 1080p so, I would obviously get 720p when it's a lot smaller in size but for movies or OVAs, definitively 1080p

Scales & HEVC are ~100-200mb mostly. HEVC (h.265) have pretty good 720p. They used to only do a few shows. Now they encode most shows.
I choose 480p or 720p depending on the show detail. Crap internet needs the smallest size I could find without the artifacts from streamed 720p.

Yes, it does matter for me. Specifically considering the difference in the size. I just keep anime that I truly like and have possibility that I most likely will re-watch them in the future. Always download them in 720p whether it is movie or anime series, because 1080p will take too much size in my HD more than what I can afford. Another circumstance is because my internet speed isn't that good, so 1080p will take longer time for me to download them.

It really depends on the show/movie. 1080p really shows with works with exceptional art like Makoto Shinkai works and Monogatari. Otherwise I'm usually fine with settling with 720p, but I will always get 1080p if I can.

How "tiny" of a monitor are we talking here? And I fail to see how being willing to watch shows that're available in no higher than 480p makes one a peasant.

Mayuka said:

Probably because any encodes that size are unofficial re-encodes; even at 480p, initial-release groups rarely release standard-length episodes at sizes that small.

it's easier to store 720p but if i really like a show visually and want to screencap it i'll download 1080p instead. depends on the show. like i wasted good computer space on saving ketsu's episodes (most of which i've deleted) just to get decent pictures of nasujimas lackluster amount of screentime but i was ultimately dealt a shitton of bad animation moments. thanks, shuka. episode 4 at least was salvageable, i suppose?

Ive noticed that for some shows, 720 vs 1080 doesnt make much of a difference. But for most of the prettier shows, there's definitely a difference in the polish and general cleanliness of the image. It might be a self-imposed thing, but I definitely feel a difference, especially for prettier, higher production shows.
