@sheycroix How about Haru x Kiyo ? It's one of my all time favorite series. It's an incredibly satisfying high school comedy, but it is also hilarious.

I didn't see these ones on your manga list, so I'm recommending them for your #60 challenge:

Aoi Hana

Candy Boy

Aoi Hana is one of my candidates for #34 (Ranked top 1000), but I can make do with Candy Boy, although I've already watched the anime. Thanks!

EDIT: It seems that the manga is a continuation of the anime, so it's even better for me :D
You're welcome! Yes, I forgot to mention that the manga just continues where the anime left off. And it's along the same vibes too. Happy Reading! :D

Lady Snowblood is the easy Gekiga recommendation.
All You Need is Kill is an easy and short read. It's a big dumb action manga.
The first story of Shibatte Nabutte♥ is very good.

I have read things about All You Need is Kill before but never started it, so thanks for mentioning. Also thanks for the others two, will try to check them~

Seeing as you want lots of recommendations, I'll give a few I like that should match the criterias listed: Tomodachi no Hanashi is a very nice, friendship focused little read, as is Warau Kanoko-sama. +α no Tachiichi is an unusual take on the girl-transporter-to-anoter-world story, and Vanilla Ice is one of the better manwha I've come across. But really, if you're willing to go just a tad beyond the 30-chapter limit, you should read some Aya Nakahara, either Dame na Watashi ni Koishite Kudasai or Lovely Complex.

Since I have Lovely Complex in my PTR list I will skip that (sorry). Dame na Watashi ni Koishite Kudasai does sounds quite interesting so I'm kind of tempted to check it out. As for Vanilla Ice I will use it for item #04 so thanks =D and also thanks for the others mentioned. Will try to check them too =)

Guys, a rec please?

I need a rec;
- It shouldn't be romance focused. The less romance, the better.
- It shouldn't be too long, but not too short either. 50-60 chapters is ideal.
- Preferably from the 2000s or the 2010s.
- Recommend me a few, just in case.

Hello @MRC_mod
I have made a banner for the challenge which I would like to share. It doesn't really fit the style for a manga reading challenge but I really liked that part of animation so I did it. :P
Well, it's on my signature on the right. People can use if they like it :D

I can't seem to find anything about a chapter minimum or like page minimum for the regular challenges. I'm considering picking up Lady Snowblood for challenge no 6 but it's only 15 chapters. Has anyone seen a rule along those lines?

To my understanding, in general there is no minimum pages or chapters rule in order to complete a challenge. Basically, unless the challenge itself specifically says to read something with x amount of chapters or volumes or less, then the chapter amount does not matter.

I believe the only challenge with this kind of restriction is the one of "reading a one-shot", because those are one chapter. So, you should be good to go with Lady Snowblood for challenge 6 :) Hope you enjoy it! It's a very interesting manga.

Should a manga have finished publishing in order to use it in the challenge??

I need recommendation for #60 too! I like josei/seinen romance and/or slice of life the most at the moment, but I'm open to any genre. I prefer series that have ended.

I can't find the answer from FAQ anymore (or I'm blind) but you should be able to use a manga that's still publishing as long as you've read all available chapters at the time you've turned your completed challenge in.

EDIT// Found it!

Hello, and welcome to Manga!!! We're happy to have you!

I looked at your anime list to get a few ideas where to start you because you are fresh. I noticed that you loved Hajime no Ippo and Kingdom. I also love Ippo and Kingdom!!! You could definitely use both or either of them(despite them being very long). Neither have been fully adapted and it'll be nice to refresh yourself on how great those series are as well as be completely caught up with the story. On top of that, you'll get to read the best story arc of Kingdom if you choose to.

Some other good sports series that you can read are Teppuu(Short!), Kuroko No Basket(longish), Haikyuu!!!(longish and still going) and RRR(medium). I think you'll get a good kick out of those since you enjoyed Ippo.

Another manga like Kingdom would be Berserk. It's considered one of the best ever written(also kind of a long one).

Some other stuff based on various things that you liked: Gokiburi Buster(It's by the guy that wrote One-Punch Man and it's a one shot, so it fits right into a challenge slot if you have that category), Orange(similar to ReLife), Horimiya(also similar to ReLife), Hokuto no Ken(the granddaddy of all shounen battle series, also can be used for Gekiga if you have that category), Watashitachi no Shiawase na Jikan(Short visceral Romance, similar to Hotarubi no Mori e but a little more adult), Monster(highly regarded work, similar to Death Note), Akumetsu(not so highly regarded work, also similar to Death Note), Welcome to the NHK!(I've heard the manga is different enough from the anime that it might be worth reading despite seeing the adaptation), Onanie Master Kurosawa(similar to Welcome to the NHK!), Ressentiment(very very similar to Welcome to the NHK! except it's about a fat 30 year old dude!), Kekkai Sensen(similar to Kill la Kill and Baccano!), JoJo's Bizarre Adventure( similar to One Punch Man, it's a little campy and dated but that kinda plays into the fun of it all, also if you finish every series it counts as 8 different entries!!!!).

Here's a few of my personal favorties that may not be particularly related to any anime you enjoyed: About Death(Short stories about meeting god after death), Kakukaku Shikajika(an autobiography about how the mangaka got started in art and about some of her relationships and regreats during that part of her life, an award winning work that I feel particularly strongly about because I truly think it's one of the most rich work I've ever read), Hoshi no Samidare(a deconstruction of the shounen battle genre, basically a short finished version of HxH), Natsu no Zenjitsu(realistic adult romance story), Gantz(Blood, Gore, Tits, Blood, Aliens, Tits, mind fuckery), Crows(good ol' fashioned japanese deliquents), Bokurano( Madoka Magica except with fucking robots), Slam Dunk(sports), Innocent(spicy historical fiction about the dude that sliced Marie Antoinette!!).

I hope this helped and provided a few places to start and maybe some direction, feel free to post in here or messege me or @tsuyokunaru if you need more recommendations or help filling out your challenges.

44 - Read a manga that deals with something related to Japanese culture
49 - Read a manga centred around folklore or mythology
60 - Read a manga recommended to you by another Manga Reading Challenge participant in the discussion thread (Would prefer something Seinen)

I'm looking for a manga recommendation for #19 (2013), #20, #21, #60. I'm good with just about anything as look as it's not too long. I am however, thinking about doing the challenge twice. @EION

Since @kitii7 already recommended most items.

For the #20, BL version…
You already have read Thomas no Shinzou, so it may be complicated…

You have MW, it is not tagged as such on MAL, but it is on BU. I haven't read it as of yet, so I dunno its exact content, but I did saw it described as the "Tezuka's BL".
Although that manga can works as a gekiga too, for the #6 challenge. You already used a manga for it, but is it a BL or GL?

Other than that, you have…
Poe no Ichizoku that is tagged as "shounen-ai". That manga isn't completely scanlated, but is 100% episodic, meaning it is a succession of more or less independent stories.
From what's available with the scanlation, it only features some homo-eroticism tension between Allan and Edgar, but no romance.

Natsu e no Tobira has a one-sided crush. In the same way, Banana Bread no Pudding also features a one-sided crush.

Lastly you can use the one-shot Le Vampire Diabolique. If it was published in 1980 in the vol.5 of Patalliro!, it was in fact serialized in 1977. So it should be valid for the challenge. (here the source for the serialization date)
Again it's not really a romance, but it does feature a gay character in the main cast.

Oh, and since I was speaking about the challenge #6, the gekiga one. You can do a GL version of it too.
Ideally, I would like to recommend Maria which features a bisexual female lead, having 2 romances with other female characters. Although it's not scanlated and from what I know it's only published in Japanese and French, maybe other countries but I don't know them.
So you can fall back with Lady Snowblood I guess. It doesn't feature any kind of romance (it's a pure action manga), but it does feature a lot of female/female actions.

I did read a lot of BL and GL (more GL than BL), and some pretty obscure ones, so I can help you for future items, maybe. へへ
And @Conde_Mohr is also doing a full-GL challenge too, so you can take a look at what he's using for his own challenge.

Good luck with it anyway! Not the most easy type of challenges. へへ’

@EION I'll tell you what I think about the GL challenge.

In my challenge, some items are Yuri/Shoujo Ai only in Baka-Updates. Most tags are relatively easy, but some of them are really limited. I think there are only 5 GL manga available for #31 (Adapted to CD drama), and 2 of them are not tagged as GL in MAL. #33 (+8.0 score) and #34 (top 1000) are more or less the same: there are not a lot of options, and you've probably read most of them already.

Some other hard challenges are #63 (recently reviewed), since it's based on luck. You need to find some shoujo ai that you haven't watched yet and has been reviewed 7 days before you start it (at most); #26/#27 (serialized one-shot), which I don't know if they can be searched as such (you can copy my items, it took me some time to find them), and #05 (award winning).

By the way, you really should keep rerolling bingo cards until you find one without #66 (recommended by MAL or Manga+). I think BL and GL are banned from recommendations, at least in Manga+. I don't know what I'm going to do about that item in my own challenge :/

When the recommendation functionality was first implemented on MAL, I had Aoi Hana recommended to me. But nowadays I have no GL nor BL anymore, some gender bender at best.

So at least on MAL it doesn't exclude them. But those recommendations are pretty bad and never correspond to what you're reading anyway. >.>

"You've pretty much only been reading shoujo ai lately, maybe you're interested in reading Death Note, Naruto or SnK". I don't know who programmed the recommendations, but that feature should be updated. And about the Manga+ genre ban, it makes no sense. If it's banning hentai, I don't agree, but at least I understand, but banning BL/GL is absurd.

@Hisokaah
Since we seem to have a similar taste in manga, I'd recommend Shaman King, Nazo no Kanojo X, Parasyte, Planetes, Hoshi no Samidare.

Can someone recommand me a manga ?

" 60. Read a manga recommended to you by another Manga Reading Challenge participant in the discussion thread"

If you could check my manga list to give me something i'd be more likely to like that would be more than welcomed.

Thanks.

Is it alright to use manhwa/manhuas for manga challenges? I'm doing prodigious genius and the manhwa I'm reading is Carnivorous Princess Yegrinna.

Also, suggestions for a manga to read please. Thanks!

@Denwaa
You have read most of my usual recommendations, and even liked them, so let's see.

From your PTR list, I'd recommend Oyasumi Punpun, Homunculus, and Akumetsu.

Apart from that, Spirit Circle, maybe Kanojo wo Mamoru 51 no Houhou? You have most of the things I'd recommend in your PTR ;-;
