The only MONSTROUS thing in this movie was the HYPOCRISY of Aizen.

"Punish him, he brought a human child to this world"

Also, the monsters are all blind.

Damn, I really want the strength to forget time, the world and myself in order to transcend reality.

I don't understand the desire to live an ordinary life when they have a choice of living an extraordinary one in the beast world. Since it seems easy to cross between worlds, If I was Ren, I'd stay most of the time in the beast world as a martial arts sensei, then visit my parents and GF in the real world every now and then. It's infinitely better than working a boring corporate job for the rest of my life in the real world.

Hmm, Ichirouhiko turning evil felt like it came out of nowhere. They should've spent time showing how he turned into the dark side instead of showing those scenes in the real world. I like seeing waifus in my shows, however, for this story, I think the girl is just a distraction and she's just stealing screen time instead. Not to mention, I don't like her hairstyle. lol

I like the animation, and it's making me reflect on my anger issues lmao it does make you crazy when you give in to that beast inside so. Aside from that, I think it also has a straightforward plot and it's simple yet there's an important lesson about how you control yourself. Parenting style shows what kind of mess-up are you xD

Call me a sucker for older men basically adopting a child and all the shennigans that are with it. The relationship between Kumatetsu and Kyuuta was geniunely great very unique yet satisfying all the same.

There are issues, such as Kyuuta being ridiculously quick to want to transition back to human society with no real forethought. I really liked Kaede and if there was going to be a "romance" in here, she was a very great support for Ren.

I would've liked Ichirouhiko and Kyuuta to have more of a personal vendetta to go up against each other; a lot was built up for the final showdown and it does look stunning but it felt like it could've gone even deeper.

8/10.

Wow, I must be really callous to not feel the "touching" moment in the movie which some of you were talking about. I think it takes more than this story to make me feel touched.

I'm not saying this movie is bad. In fact, I liked it; it so happens that it's not something I would put on my top-recommended anime list.

She got him back. If you understand the characters well enough, you'd know she did!

Overall it was a great movie. I adore the art style and the story. But how other beast doesn't realize Louzen also have a human child and why did Kyuuta had so much conflict all of a sudden to move out of Kumametsu with his father even though he have emotionally more connected with him? And that's not all; Kyuuta not becoming a swordman against also is a bit strange. The writer didn't give Kyuuta a proper development at the end.

Man, the second I saw Ichirohiko I thought, "that bro's human," embarrassing that the Bests never clocked him.

Anyway, I really enjoyed this movie. Like many of the comments in this thread, thought the first half was a lot stronger, or more accurately the stuff in the Beast World was a lot stronger than the real world stuff. Kyuta & Kumatetsu's relationship definitely carried this film, I loved their dynamic and how they grew from each-other. The whole foster family dynamic, or just a parent/child dynamic, are just really endearing to me, and this was one of the stronger examples I think. I also really liked Kyuta's relationship with Tatara, and to a lesser extent Hyakushubo, a lot too. I like his relationship with Kaede just fine too, certainly never forged a strong connection to it like I did with Kyuta's other relationships in the movie. It did provide the payoff of preventing him from giving into the darkness, and I liked the touch of Kyuta gifting it to Ichirohiko as well.

Speaking of Ichirohiko, I didn't hate the final action conflict here or his role as a villain. I agree we never spent enough time with him to form an emotional connection with him, so I didn't particularly care about rescuing him as person per se, but what we got of him did a solid enough job of building up his descent, and he works well as a mirror for what Kyuta could've been. It's definitely the weakest part of the film, but I wouldn't call it bad personally. Some things I do like about it is, on a completely superficially level I found the whale kind cool looking at point, like when it dispersed at the very end, that was a pretty visual. But beside that, I do like that there was some strategy/payoff to the final blow beyond Kumatestu's becoming the sword in his heart (though that was a nice pay off too). But like Kyuta noticing when Ichirohiko appears, the sort of pattern recognition that he learned by studying Kumatestu. It's minor but I appreciate that it wasn't just a power-up then final blow, he needed the power of the Beast world but also the skills he developed to save the day.

I did struggle a lot with what to score this, it's lives on the borderline of a 7 or 8. I'm giving it an 8 but in a way it is a shame knowing that if the movie just maintained the quality in that first half, there'd be no struggle, it'd be an easy 8, maybe even growing to a 9. I really do love family dynamic here with Kyuta and his beast caretakers. But again, I don't think the second half is bad, and the movie did have to shift the focus away to Ren's life so-to-speak if they wanted to capture the full father/son relationship because usually there is a point where the child moves on. I just wish the Ren stuff was as compelling or endearing as the Kyuta stuff but I still had a blast watching this ultimately, so 8/10.
