Man that first half was super depressing, if I hadn't read it in the manga, I would have definitely cried
rumbleanime said:
Now Kakerus flashback of his death brings some new stuff here. Because he didn't actually commit suicide right?

He saw the drafts and wanted to go to Naho to apologozie and probably confess, and then he had the accident, but it wasn't a suicidal motive.

He would have finally confessed, ending the "waiting time".

And probably his friends still think that at this moment, not knowing the truth behind his death.

In a funny way, when he read the SMS where his mother explained his childhood, I found similarities with Kakeru. Hard childhood, father-mother problems and divorce, mobbing... It kinda hit the nail on the head why during the whole series I had sympathies for his character and why I could "feel" his thoughts and his depression.

Now I will see the last episode. Exciting to wait for Kakerus verdict.

Interesing, because as Suwa is one of the best characters I have ever seen, I would wish him Naho by his side. But as I can feel Kakeru, his problems, his views, probably also his complexes, I would wish him Naho as well. I think you all know the moment when in a (comedy) romance movie you sympathize with a love contendant who is gonna get the female protagonist, and in most of the case is true. Here, I am really divided with the opinions. Only the fact that Suwa has married already Naho in the future, makes me wanna have Naheru coming together with Naho a little bit more.

To the episode related, I loved the part when Kakeru made a self-thought about what would happen if I died, accompanied by the piano. It went deep.

I feel like all these time travel based elements are just trying mind fuck us. What is up with time travel lately? Dammit Barry Allen, look at what you've done to this industry. Everything is becoming a Flashpoint Paradox.

Anyways, the feels with Kakeru and his mom was the sole good part of this episode.
Don't believe the hype.

Oof, that message Kakeru's mom left was quite the gut punch. Rest was boring. And did the author really wave away them not trying to prevent Kakeru's mom's death with "even if we hadn't invited him that day, she would have done it eventually?" That pretty drastically undermines the attempt to save Kakeru and going by that logic they shouldn't bother with him either.

Yeah that makes sense. I wouldn't be surprised if this is like another Steins Gate where they have to keep sending back letters until they get to the "good future". I also would not be surprise if Kakeru does die at the end of this anime.

90% of the plot devices are stupid. Just watch Re:Zero and his Return by dead or BokuDake and his Revival. Deal with it.

the whole show of Re:Zero is wrapped around that concept. and it will most likely have a kinda good explanation which is obviously easier explainable in a fantasy setting. and yes BokuDake is as stupid as orange. we agree. but that doesnt make it acceptable. the whole show is stupid from this point on. naho was freakin annoying anyways.

I understand your point but Return by Dead is a dirty plot device simply by the fact that Subaru was brought form another freaking universe just to use it. Why the witch didn't choose someone else? Why bring a hikkomori fron another universe? Why don't you use that awesome power on yourself witch?

It will need some heavy DeathNote level of explanation for me to bought it. (That is a nice example of good plot device)

Starting to feel bad for Kakeru, but after seeing his mother's POV and his subsequent treatment of Naho, I say 'fuck this shitty brat'.

Some people are saying Kakeru has fucked up past and is depressed, but its his own doing and consequences. His lack of communication, introvertedness, opening up to wrong people, blowing up helpful people will never cure/uplift his depressed mindset.

Also how the five friends bear to be with him, always gloomy, withdrawn, unresponsive and not having anything particular in common.

Kakeru's perspective through the original timeline is really sad.
His Mom really cared for him & those text messages broke him.

Poor Naho trying so hard to apologize, but Kakeru is keeping his distance.

One more ep to go. Hopefully they can save Kakeru.

I'm kind of disappointed how the anime left some things out while explaining Kakeru's POV. Even just a few more sentences of explaining could have made us understand him better.

Kakeru hurt all the people he loved. He hurt is mother, his grandma, even Naho. Consequently, he thinks he's going to hurt the whole entire group next so he absolutely regrets even meeting them at all.

This episode was basically a slap in the face to everyone who hated on Kakeru last week...including myself.

That's fucking rough when he found that note in his mothers phone. Basically a suicide note.

Though he still was in Dick mode at the end of the episode lol.

Much better episode from last week. Kakeru's perspective from the original timeline was pretty sad though I personally wish that he could have some determination to fix his problems and live. I'm pretty sure Kakeru's mom would not have wanted her own son to commit suicide and to just live a fun, happy life.

There were still some animation derps around the episode, but at this point whatever haha.

I kinda wish they didn't explain how the letters went back through time because black holes? Really?

And I hope Naho's resolve to save Kakeru will actually mean something this time.

Overall, a good episode. Gonna have to wait for next week.

I didn't really like Kakeru, even in the manga, but I absoolutely loved chapter which told story from his perspective. It showed how depression works quite well and was totally believable. Anime adapted it okay, it haven't made such an impact on me, but I liked it anyway. Even animation didn't suck that much this week - though to be fair, sound mixing felt even more terrible than usually, sigh.

About black holes and Bermuda triangle, yup guys, this is really happening xD It was utterly stupid in manga as well. Probably the worst explanation I've ever heard. I don't think this should even count for "sci-fi", if anything, this is some magic shit at best.

Music was on point. Art quality back up for the most part. Giving us Kakeru's perspective really shows why he's hurting as bad as he is. This was a really nice episode.

...That is until they started talking about the mechanics of sending letters back in time. I really wish they hadn't. We don't need to know that for the story to work. Tying to give it some sort of explanation just makes it sound stupid. There's no explanation that wouldn't be stupid.

Also, for a moment I thought that after reading his mom's final message, he realized how dumb a suicide would be, that he wanted to cycle to Naho and apologize... and that the crash was an accident after all - which would've been a hilarious twist.

Same, and for the the second part I thought that was exactly what was happening, and I felt like it would have made everything even worse, but heh. Was still feelsy af.

Shit, this was a hard episode to sit through. Not only did they animate basically the entirety of the story from the perspective of the Kakeru who actually died, but they also showed just how he was feeling during that timeline.

First up I don't agree with people slagging on him for acting the way he did. He was abused as a child by a father he barely remembered, and his mother divorced him without ever consulting him about it. Sure he was young when it happened, and probably wouldn't have understood it, but as he grew older his mother still did not explain her actions to him, leaving him lost and confused as anyone in his situation would be.
The bullying from outsiders and his mother's inexplicable constant changing of their residence and schools led him to feeling as if he did not belong anywhere (it's a common feeling, I can definitely relate). Then, on the one occasion that he decides to do something of his own desire (to stay with his new-found friends instead of taking his mother to the hospital(?)), disaster strikes and he loses the very pillar that had been keeping his life together.
So he falls into depression, and begins to distance himself from his new friends. If I recall, in the original timeline, none of them were as observant or accommodating as right now (otherwise none of them would be having the many regrets that they have 10 years on), and no one actually picked up on his act of everything being okay or the fact that his mother was already dead. He believes he has no right to a happy life, to the extent that he questions his own right to live, and rejects Naho's approaches to him, knowing that Suwa has feelings for her and believing that Suwa would make her happier than he ever could (inferiority complex at it's finest). In the original timeline, I don't think that he was actually all that close with any of them before he died.

So in the end he takes his own life on the assumption that his new friends weren't all that close to him and wouldn't be affected by his passing anyway, and that his departure would be nothing more than a speck of dust in the wind that no one would notice.

Ashamed to say, I can honestly relate to his feelings and his way of thinking, because I'd been down in such a dark place at one point in me own life, and at times can still view the world in a darker shade of grey. Being manically depressed isn't something that one can snap out of by sheer willpower, and going through all those tragedies that he has doesn't help one bit.

That said, I have to call bullshit on the mechanism for sending letters. Throwing letters into a black hole in the middle of the ocean/sea/Bermuda triangle is pretty unbelievable in itself, but once I get into the logistics of things, it makes even less sense. So the letters are sent through a black hole in the middle of an international body of water and miraculously end up in the post office IN JAPAN?!?! I thought they'd have come up with a more clever way of sending the letters, but to say that I'm disappointed in the reveal is a blatant understatement.

I'll watch till the end, because I'm pretty much invested in the show now, but the black hole mechanism just took away a lot of my enjoyment for the series.

So they show us what happened to the Kakeru who died and what the current Naho has to avoid. Kakeru's mother used to do stuff on her own with Kakeru in mind, but she never stopped to ask Kakeru how he feels about her actions. And this made Kakeru think that she's a pain in the butt, which led him to make the decision of not going to his mother to the hospital despite promising. He begins to feel guilty about it and tries not to cause anyone else any trouble from now on which is why he doesn't tell anyone about his mother's death because he doesn't want anyone to become even less happy because of him. After they fight, Suwa confesses to Naho. Kakeru tries to get back to normal with Naho but Naho is the one who doesn't act normally and avoids Kakeru a bit. And during valentine's day Kakeru finds his mother's phone and reads the message she wrote but didn't send for whatever reason. And she apologizes in that message for doing things on her own without even letting Kakeru know the reason. And this leads to Kakeru starting to consider dying even more and he goes out and coincidentally meets a speeding truck and doesn't take evasive action because he started to believe that no one would miss him if he dies and nothing would change. The gang would go back to being five friends like they were before he came and everything would go back to normal. But that doesn't happen as the gang starts to blame themselves for what happened to Kakeru and they all regret those decisions they made which possibly led Kakeru to this point.

Great to see Naho finally taking action. She goes up to Kakeru to apologize and tries to talk with him. But Kakeru is still keeping a bit of a distance from her. He probably hasn't gotten over what happened at the new year's eve event. And this is probably because of the future changing. The Kakeru who died tried to do what Naho is doing now but the roles have changed over here. Naho tells Kakeru to wait till valentine's day which means that she's telling him to wait for her chocolates. Her friends should really be concerned because this is a big event which leads to Kakeru's death. They shouldn't brush it off as nothing and say that Kakeru will bounce back. He may not be able to bounce at all if things go on like this.

And they tried to explain the time travel stuff in a weird way. Do they even know what black holes are? And they wrote letters and sent them off at sea to reach the Bermuda Triangle and then the letters magically appeared in everyone's respective houses. I would have preferred if they hadn't tried to explain this. The part where the teacher was explaining if time travel is possible and what will happen to the future and stuff was enough. An explanation of how they sent the letters wasn't really necessary. I like how Hagita was the relatively sensible guy at the time thinking that all this crap of time travel is impossible but then he ends up sending himself a letter anyway lol.

And next episode we'll be getting the Valentine's day climax. Naho will bring chocolates and give them to Kakeru, provided that guy doesn't go off trying to kill himself. Naho probably gave Suwa those chocolates at that time because Suwa stole her heart before Kakeru could do it. Naho did say that Suwa confessing to her made her happy so it is possible.

I think the last part of Kakeru was the best episode. I swear I cry when I read the last message from his mother.
Send letters through a black hole was very random. I was expecting something more scientific.
I can not add anything else.
A chapter for the resolution and I am afraid that Kakeru also have a letter yet.

In the future mention of that Kakeru followed this with them rhetorically. themselves may send one to Kakeru, whatever.
If we use logic to send letters to the past, we can also make a ghost send them.

It's annoying to watch, but I get where Kakeru is coming from. I'm surprised that since the last couple of eps JP viewers have been really hard on Kakeru telling him to get over himself, instead of being mad at Naho's lack of tact. It's like depression isn't treated as a legit illness. :/

Well, Chapter 21 was the climax of the entire series for many people, what with the Kakeru POV flashback and all. The cellphone scene in particular hit me super hard in the manga.

...But they just had to rush it. I've been waiting all season to see that chapter adapted and they took out the bulk of Kakeru's monologues thus lessening the impact. They also should have given it its own episode, because having Naho be stupid again and showing the Bermuda Triangle nonsense in the second half was 20000x less effective as a follow up contrary to having Kakeru kill himself in the old timeline as the ending scene.

But whatever, it was still a solid episode and the Kakeru flashback probably still did its job in simplest terms, I just don't get what's so hard about adapting a chapter properly when the dialogue and panel drawing are literally right there for you.

Despite the rushed adaptation, the great music score still keeps it at a 4/5.

The sending letters into the ocean and hoping they find a black hole is pretty improbable. but don't forget that this is a show running on parallel timeline rules. every probability is it's own timeline. So really the entire series just represents the one massively improbable circumstance where their letters actually made it to the past. In a way it's entirely a what if story.

Everything else was gold star melodrama. YUM.

The message of Takeru's mother was nice. His actions afterwards were kinda unreasonable though. Like... He finally "is allowed" to live his life while having fun and then he just decides to not give a fuck and gets hit by a car? Well w/e. At least we got to see what actually happened.

Everything that happened after that part of the episode was boring. The Bermuda Triangle stuff was weird as fuck. Takeru's reaction after the break (in the "current" time) was stupid. And the group was pretty fucking useless if you ask me. All the time they try to force them into his life and now they just give up when Takeru blocks them? More precisely -> stops Naho from talking to him more than just a few sentences.

I really hope they have a conclusion coming up next episode but this episode did not convince me. Which is a bit annoying because I actually enjoyed the anime so far(with a few exceptions. A few scenes were just even weirder than the stuff that happened this ep).
