It's always so nice of you to apologize. <3 I don't mind waiting, I have to practice being patient anyway.

No, I haven't finished BIS yet. I'm very slow when it comes to games. It takes me ages to finish one. Currently I'm at the point where the Mario bros can finally get outside and explore the 3D world. The blue shells are a creative mechanic, I like it very much!

Also, I've been into Pizza Tower recently! Boooy this game is amazing! Catchy tunes, crazy style, and lightning fast gameplay! I wonder which game I'll finish first: Pizza Tower, BIS, Undertale or CrossCode. As for Pizza Tower and CrossCode, I'm getting really close to the ending. I could basically finish the storyline of the latter, but I don't want to since it's so fun! (No, I'm not pushing you, just praising the game.) And also, I just opened the last area of the game: Rhombus Square! Which is funny, since it's the first real location you meet, except that you can't get in for ~50 hours. A clever move!

Replaying Pokémon? Cool! Recently I looked up why Pokémon games come in pairs. According to an interview, it's to make trading pokemons more enjoyable, as each version has it's own set of creatures. So if you and your friend have a different version, every pokemon from the other version will be fresh and interesting!

I like foreign languages too, and so do my siblings. I envy my sister, she won a national English competition. I was among the bests in my school too, but my biggest accomplishment is qualifying for the finals. In the end, my teacher chose someone else to participate in the finals, and I'm kind of thankful for that since I would have had to present a detailed book recommendation there, and presenting is a nightmare for an introvert, let alone doing it in a foreign language.

Thank you! Actually, I try to avoid the ghost at all cost. Some like to play with it since it can turn ordinary gems into super valuable diamonds, but for me it's not worth the hassle. Maybe in Spelunky 2 I could try it as it has a special vase on every level which contains a diamond, and also summons the ghost immediately. But it has a twist: if you let the ghost chase you for too long, it splits into two smaller and faster ghosts.

About puzzles, it might not look like a puzzle game, but Spelunky often has tricky situations that you really have to think about. Typically when there are many enemies beneath you. You can take the risk and almost certainly lose an HP or two, or you can use one of your precious bombs to make an alternative route. Or just blow up the enemies, hehe. Measuring gap sizes and jump distances is also part of the fun. And trying not to upset the shopkeepers.

Oshi No Ko is very good, it's an educational show done well. But it's okay if you don't feel like trying it.

A theatre play about an anime? It must be a whole new experience! I heard School-Live has one too, maybe I'll check it on YouTube since I'm a biiiig fan of both the anime and the manga (especially the manga). Haven't heard of Slam Dunk yet. Looking at its MAL page – made before 2000, is about sports, 100+ episodes – I don't think I would like it.

I already made a "debt list" to count my anime promises, I'll add Haikyuu too, haha. But currently I'm watching Apothecary Diaries and I just can't stop. It's a 10/10. It's humor is brilliant, the artwork is spectacular, and I adore the characters too. Really, a masterpiece. I'm at episode 6 and I can fully recommend it so far.

Thank you for the good wishes, I wish the same! It was an exceptionally tough week so far, it makes me feel sick, but I hope I can survive it somehow.

I had to Google what a ward is. Huh, it's pretty unique, I don't think we have such things in my country. I see it's not far from Tokyo bay, which is cool! Places near open water are my favorites. And the scenery is also pretty! (Thanks, Google Maps.)

Oh, that's really a coincidence. In my family, nearly every woman is a teacher and every man is in the IT sector. My grandmother taught Maths and Physics. She also prepared me for my entrance exams into highschool, so I know how it feels. Preparing was just as tough as the exam. About my mother, she teaches religion (Christian, Reformed). She isn't strict and children like her at school. She also gives small presents (rubber, candy, football card) at the end of the classes for those who behaved well and were active.

Don't give up, there must be a solution. However, if you're using original hardware, I can't help much. In the worst case you could try this or a similar tool to get past that door, if you can extract the saves.

The hardest game I played? You found my favorite question! I would say Spelunky HD or Spelunky 2 (the latter is more brutal). This video perfectly sums up the game:

As Khaos said: "the simplest mistake can screw your entire run". So speaking of patience, Spelunky really needs it. Also, standing still can in fact kill you if you are super unlucky.

What I like about this game is that you don't have permanent upgrades. At all. When you enter the game the very first time you can theoretically complete the game in one try. I played Spelunky HD so much, if you let me try 3 times I can win the game at least once without shortcuts.

That's very sad indeed. Once I almost lost a save file that I'd been playing for years with my brother and friends (the game's Don't Starve Together). We had more than 200 hours on that save, close to the final boss. Thankfully it survived and we could finish it. We were so prepared that a huge part of our equipment remained unused.

Umm, partly comfortable. XD The good thing is, it weighs nothing. All plastic and no vibration motors (I don't need them). The bad thing is, the holder can't be tilted enough which is frustrating. I have to tilt my wrists instead to view the screen from a proper angle. Not the end of the world but still, this would have been easy to fix.

But hey! 100% is insane in any game! I rarely max out games. There's only one game on Steam where I got all the achievements: MO:Astray. A fun, unique and atmospheric game. Gato Roboto is almost perfect too, but the last achievement is to do a sub-hour speedrun. I tried it but the goal time for the first sequence was 4 minutes and I struggled to go below 7.

It was my father's phone for 1-2 years, but he bought it from one of his colleagues so it wasn't brand new to start with. Then I got it and used it until 2021.

Aqua was formerly the doctor of Ai and Ruby was the girl from the hospital. Aqua got stalked and the girl died of cancer. Then they both reincarnated. But after a while I forgot about the fact that they aren't as old as they seem. Until a few reminders.

Sheer power is always tempting, but it usually comes paired with slow speed which I dislike, so I'll stay with the more balanced characters. In other games I also choose melee weapons that are long but still not awfully slow.

I'll probably try Deltarune as well, but after finishing this playthrough I plan to go for the good ending. I heard Undertale has 93 ending variations though, so I won't do a true 100% that's for sure.

Yeah, I think the only other truly different final boss theme I heard was the one in Superstar Saga, both 1st and 2nd phase. It was frightening and stressful, and for a good reason. That drop to 1hp was cruel. I still owe that game a cheatless final fight.

I got the emu fixed the following day I sent my previous message! I just missed the answer-bus because of my own laziness (totally my fault, don't worry).

8 hours into the game, I think I'm gradually getting addicted. The story is a strange idea, but this dual system works genuinely well. Bowser is a fantastic character, I like fighting as him too, and I adore the meta and previous title references. Emulation is very tricky in this case. I'm using an upscaler, remapped my controller to follow the Nintendo layout, and configured a mic for the big Bowser fights. Speaking of those, I should set a shortcut for screen rotation as I have to go into the emu's menu to rotate the DS. Also thinking about borrowing my brother's Wacom board for Bowser's special attacks.

And before I forget: what's up with CrossCode? Did you get the time to try it? Sorry, I just like to nag my friends about my recommendations. I do the same for Steins;Gate as it has a slow start and nobody has the patience to watch the first half of the show. But as I can see you're safe. S;G 0 is on your PtW list though, sooo... Nah, I leave it up to you. The first season is a huge favorite of mine. It had a deep impact on me emotionally. S;G 0 is darker. It follows the same formula from a different perspective, and damn, no matter how many times they show Kurisu, it hits every time (at least for me, it did).

Woah, this message got crazy long (again). Now I know how traditional mailing feels with a load of sub-threads. It feels amazing haha. ^^

Hello! No problem again, I value your effort to write long answers (because I consider them long, not brief). I can totally understand how hard days can be. My mother is a teacher too so I know very well it's not free money. By the way, in which city are you studying? Not like I know many. Japan must be very exciting! (But I don't plan to go there, it's very far from me.)

My results for this semester were mostly acceptable (sometimes even good) and I didn't fail any important subjects so I'm happy overall.

I totally don't respect the paragraph order, but thank you! I practiced a lot both for the berry and the speedrun. Although the goldens were mostly the practice as cutting down on death counts is still a huge time save for me on my skill level. Extreme time saves are for those who aim for 0:30 or so.

That's great! Restarting an unfinished game is always hard. I'm also terrible at figuring out stuff haha. No shame in it. And when you get frustrated by it it's better to use a guide for that puzzle. I will try it too I promise, but currently I started Earthbound and I try to complete that first (I'm very slow with games so maybe I'll cheat a bit and play the two in parallel). And yes, the new controller has arrived and it works well finally. It still feels cheap, the quality is not the best, but I didn't want to spend more on it.

I also got these cute little triggers that I can attach to my phone. And to my biggest surprise it doesn't require charging!

I bought them specifically to play Drilldozer. :) That game requires both shoulder buttons and moving at the same time. It's a bit unusual at first as you can't hold the phone as you usually do, but it really helps with the contols.

I can understand that, I'm also sceptical about hyped shows. Oshi No Ko was a positive surprise though. I can't wait for the second season, naturally they ended the first one with a cliffhanger... I didn't start Frieren yet but my friend told me it's interesting, so somewhere in the (probably distant) future I'll give it a try.

Well, I played Super Smash Bros with my 3 siblings and 2 uncles (all younger than me ^^), and we set maybe 2 CPU players too. And mains? I only played it for 30 minutes so far. XD But there was a round where we all choose Kirby for fun, so technically Kirby is my main. I heard Peach's ability is super useful too, next time we visit them (it'll be on Easter) I'll see how cool she is haha.

Yes, I know Undertale! Probably I'm the only one on Earth who immediately guessed Papyrus' hat instead of his other parts. XD I'm trying to complete my first playthrough but I took a long break and it's hard to return to stuff on hold. But I definitely want to finish it, I just have to overcome my antipathy towards random encounters. Those 2 songs you send were absolute bangers. Bossfight musics are so epic. Hovewer, Partners in Time surprised me with its calm and peaceful boss theme. It was somehow fitting for that moment. That 30 minutes long moment...

Speaking of it, I finally finished Partners in Time after 5 years! It set up a new record I guess. In the last section every ?-block made me more scared because I knew something really brutal is waiting for me. The game literally flooded me with items and that's never a good sign. It turned out to be not that hard but veeery very long. And it even threw a third "final" boss at me! It was a fun minigame but a little stressful knowing I have to start over if I fail.

I already got a ROM from Bowser's Inside Story, but unfortunately I managed to break my emulator with my tweaking. :( I'll try to reinstall it and hopefully that will fix it. If not, I'll have to install it on another computer to compare them and see what I changed, because I made the terrible mistake of changing something without making a backup. I'm definitely not going to lose this battle and I'm very excited to start BIS already!

Sooo! A few days ago I got the golden berry! There were close calls but surprisingly I survived all of them. I recorded the whole run (minus the first room), but showing it would be a little tricky.

And today I got the speedrun too!

Although it was far from perfect. I was rusty and finished the run with 64 deaths and skipped a few shortcuts too. But at least I didn't die on the long rooms and somehow managed to do a 2:58 on chapter 2. It was 5 seconds better than my personal best! Most of the time saves came from my better performance on 5A, where I got the golden recently.

So yeah, I'm proud of myself, and will probably try a sub-55 in the future. And will try the next golden too, however, the second half of 6A is very difficult.

And what's up with you? Did you have time for CrossCode? Or played Minish Cap instead?

*plan to watch any seasonals. I hate leaving errors in my messages and the editing timeframe is over.
tinshard Jan 10, 6:59 AM
Now that you mentioned we played Smash Bros too! We played in teams and I was always in the winner team haha. ^^ At least there's one Switch game I'm good at. I tried wavedashing too since I'm fairly consistent with it in Celeste, but the problems started when I didn't know which player I am from the 10 figures on screen, and then when I had the chance to hit a character then I always pressed the wrong button. But I managed to stay safe.

Exactly, the desert. And I admit it, it was a little early to judge it. The best and most fun worlds always come later.

Holy cow yes! OSTs! I listen to so many of them. Currently listening to Mega Man 11's OST. I genuinely don't know how could players say it's not as good as the previous title's music. It's different, but amazing. The title theme is a huge favorite of mine, and the game menu theme is quite unique as the game shows the menu when you get a Game Over, so the menu music turns more melancholic if you wait a bit.

Tell me what you think of CrossCode. I already recommended it to a few people on MAL, all of them were too busy to try it so far, but that's understandable.

A-ha! So you use John GBA too! John's emulators are the best. I rarely buy the full version of an app but this emu deserved it. By the way, I recently bought a new Bluetooth controller for my phone. Unfortunately I had to send it back because the right stick was sticky, but when I get a new one I'll play some Zelda games with it.

I did the erasing in the other direction, I overwrote my own Distance save state with my brother's. Of course I was the one who had the higher progression. Luckily it was only track records and I could grind the unlockable levels in a couple of hours. (I like that game so much. It can be both relaxing and challenging. And the neon colors look cool!)

Strawberries are THE challenge. Rushing through the game is not that hard but still very challenging. But the golden ones require weeks of practice. For the regular ones, they only change the last image where your run's stats are summed up. There's a pie and it's made from the berries you collected. 😊 So speedrunners get a very miserable pie. 😆

Thanks for the question! I'm getting closer and closer to get the 10th golden berry! My last attempt failed near halfway. That seeker got me in the last possible moment. :( I was literally a few frames away from escaping. But at least I didn't fail the speedrun shortcut like in the previous run. (Fail = dying and starting over. It's about jumping over a long row of spikes with a boost.)

As for speedrunning, I still want to practice individual rooms first. I discovered a bunch of places there I can shave off a few seconds. But one day...

Uhh, studying is not that smooth. ^^' I still have many exams left. I'm not really watching seasonals, the most recent thing I plan to watch is Frieren. I'm curious what could surpass FMAB in terms of rating.

I hope you enjoyed the holidays too! Do you play to watch any seasonals?
tinshard Dec 26, 2023 6:34 AM
Hmm, yes, Danganronpa. Someday I want to try that too, but only after 999. I still have VLR and ZTD to beat.

Of course! Now that you mentioned Partners in Time, I overcame my laziness and installed the SSD the game was on. Maaan, I didn't remember this game was so hard. Maybe because I'm in the endgame now, but everything requires frame perfect inputs and punishes brutally for every mistake. Only the autoregen badge keeps me alive. And the save states. XD

Yesterday was the Christmas dinner with my family (well, it was lunch actually) and my cousins just got a Switch recently. So I had the chance to try Super Mario Odyssey! It's not bad, but I wasn't blown away. A Hat in Time was short, but felt more alive. And it wasn't full of unnecessary empty spaces to make it more "open world". By the way my cousins destroyed my confidence again. ^^' But at least I could beat that giant head boss the second time. He was also very patient with me and helped me when I died at very stupid places.

I heard good things about the Zelda series! I haven't played any of them, but tried a few Zelda inspired games. For example Crosscode! Checking your profile comments I haven't mentioned it so far, somehow. So, story time! In short: TRY IT! IT'S AMAZING! Really, it's very unique. It's a very well done meta MMORPG that's actually single player. It's hard to explain. The connection with Zelda is the puzzle dungeons. Because it has really tough puzzles. And once you figured them out you still have to execute them! But the game is not only about the puzzles, it's also about... Many other things. It would be exhausting to tell every good quality of it but here are a few. Free teleport to landmarks from anywhere, quick auto health regen outside battles, and the best part: almost all enemies are neutral. If you want to explore the world without interruptions, you can! Actually, the best part is not this, but Lea. She is the best silent protagonist ever. She can't speak but she can say a few words later on. And her expressions are sooo adorable. I highly recommend you try the free demo, it can also be played directly from a browser here.

Yes, I heard about these and was thinking about getting Stardew Valley. Maybe one day. Looking at Harvest Moon I realized I played a similar flash game where I was a dwarf and had to make money with farming and keeping animals! I loved that game so much, especially the treasure hunt in the caves. I might replay it with Flashpoint in the future.

Hmm, if you asked for bragging, why not! Currently I'm grinding my 10th golden strawberry in Celeste. They can be obtained by beating a chapter deathless. I'm trying to do the 5th chapter (A side). Also, I dream about getting a sub-hour any% speedrun. I'm only minutes away from it, so a little better execution, a few new shortcuts, and that's it! (I usually end my full-runs with 50-100 deaths so I have room to improve.)

Thank you! It's very good so far! But I should start studying for my exams soon... Anyway, I still want to enjoy every minute of the holidays!
tinshard Dec 24, 2023 5:55 AM
Merry Christmas! I've been so busy I only realized this Monday that Sunday is Christmas. ^^'
tinshard Dec 11, 2023 2:46 AM
Your turn to die? I heard the name but don't really know it. Throwing a bunch of different people in a small space is always interesting. One of my favorite books, A maze of death is also about this. But it's not exactly a life and death game controller by a mysterious entity, it's more complicated. The characters are sent to a foreign planet without a way home, not in one ship but one after the other, and they are promised to get a message with their mission after which they can go home. But of course, things go wrong. And paranoia starts to overwhelm them.

I agree, later episodes don't have the same vibe, although I only played the first two and didn't finish the second yet. It's been on hold for years now... And I'm on the alien mothership already! I'll try to finish it before New Year. The thing is, maybe the stronger hardware, double screen and more buttons give space to more sophisticated mechanics, but I just don't like the baby theme as much as the Beanbean Kingdom in the first installment.

I don't have a Switch so I must rely on emulators. Honestly not only the hardware is expensive but the games too. I'm already deep in the realm of PC games anyway. I've just got a new PC thanks to my dad (he paid for most of it) so I can finally play all games seamlessly! Not like 40 fps was that bad, I value graphics more than frame rate anyway, but having more than twice as much is quite different. (Although it gets pointless after 60 since my monitor can't output more.) But my demands can adapt to the current hardware. On my 13 years old laptop 20 fps is completely acceptable. (Sonic Generations runs at 13 and I can still enjoy it.)

It's hard to determine my top three. My number one determined by playtime must be Oxygen not Included. Colony simulators are huge time sinks! I have around 800 hours in it and I'm still terrible at building big systems. My younger brother is much better despite he "only" played ~100 hours. About Cave Story, it's different from your average retro game. It's often called a metroidvania but it's not really true, more like an action adventure platformer. It's main quirk is that weapons level up instead of your character, and they delevel when you take damage. It's amazing and I'm currently on the skill level where I can do boss rush mode. And the good ending without using the instant heal item! And getting the normal ending with 3 max hp! (Yes, I'm so proud of myself for not having a life.) The game got its fame because it's a freeware, a passion project made by a single person in the course of 8 years! And it has many many ports, even mobile ports, but it's not available in the Play Store, only on GitHub.

Well, I wouldn't call them easy, but with practice they are completely beatable. Especially if you don't rush and run into your death. My little cousin totally destroyed me when we played a Mario game. He did the levels deathless while I bumped into every piranha plant. At least I wasn't alone, my siblings played too and weren't much better than me, haha.

Farming simulators? Probably one of the genres that sounds terribly boring but surprisingly enjoyable when jumped into. Epic Games gave it for free and I have it, but didn't play it. But cleaning an apartment in Out of Space is also an exciting task, so who knows?
tinshard Dec 4, 2023 10:41 AM
I heard about Welcome to the ballroom, I skipped it back then, but after Grand Scene I changed my mind.

Hmm, DS? Did you play 9 Hours 9 Persons 9 Doors by any chance? Because I played the PC port after reading an analysis about the game in a book. And it's a really good visual novel! (Oops, more game recommendations.)

I remember the first time I played with an Xbox controller at my friend's house. I was terrible with it. But it thanks to controllers that I got to know one of my favorite games. Because when I got my first Bluetooth controller I wanted to try it out with my phone. So I downloaded a GBA emulator, searched for Mario ROMs, found Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, and the rest is history. I completed the game 4 times since then.

Oh yes! The good old classics! Those games were addictive for a reason. I played a lot of pinball too, and solitaire, mahjongg, minesweeper, and of course Tetris! Recently I got a cheap 400-in-1 handheld console. And yes, I play Tetris on it. It's so much different on a handheld with actual buttons.

I feel you. I don't have time for them either, but you can safely (?) try The Island as it's only about 10 minutes long. At least without the addictive "one more" loop. That's why Bejeweled Twist's Blitz mode and Bejeweled 3's Lightning mode are so dangerous. They're only 5 minutes long. I call them "the longest 5 minutes of your life". (About watching games, this video is gold.)

After so many hours (and beating the most brutal levels in the game) I realized how forgiving Celeste is. When you start it it's very tough but the gaps between the spikes are actually 3-5 times the size of your hitbox.

I played HK, and I got the normal ending! It's astonishing how huge that map is. I started maxing it out, but after losing thousands of geo (I forgot to bench quit) I lost my enthusiasm a bit. Also, the hit cooldown can get very annoying. I lost many boss fights because I couldn't catch the rhythm of head bouncing. My friend's younger brother has over 200 hours in it and had completed Steel Soul. I'd rather stick with my favorite trio if I want challenge: Cave Story, Celeste and Spelunky.

Wow, now I'm curious. xD (Also, it's controls are this way by design, the programmer watched to make it harder somehow and making the controls slippery is one way.)

And no worries about the reply time, it's more like mailing than chatting anyway. :) (However, "New Comment on your MyAnimeList.net Profile" emails are still very addictive and I often find myself checking my emails just for them.)
tinshard Dec 3, 2023 4:29 AM
It's no surprise. The reason I didn't tell you anything about it is not because I thought everyone knows it, but the theme. It's not something one immediately thinks will like. I never ever thought ballet could be so interesting. Because it's about ballet. And yes, I absolutely recommend it. It's so real, so wholesome and technically accurate in general. It's so good it kinda makes me depressed as I'm not nearly as determined and persistent as the MC.

I heard about Haikyuu, maybe it's even on my (not MAL) list. I'll keep it in mind.

My only game console was the GBA, I got an used one for Christmas when I was around 6. I got a 56-in-1 cartridge with it, full of GBC games, so I actually only played GBC games with it. It had Pokemon Crystal and I loved it very much, but the cartridge couldn't save so I had to restart it every time. The farthest I got was a huge tower. Another great game it had was Soccer Boy (a.k.a Soccer Mania). The player managed the Japanese team. The question wasn't whether I can beat the American team but if I can score over 20 during the match. My record is 0-21 iirc.

Yes! But not multilayer games, he just helped me play. My earliest gaming memory is probably Solitaire on Windows 95 or 98, idk exactly. I didn't really play it, just put the last card in place and watched the cards fall down with a trail. Still the most satisfying way to complete a game if you ask me. The game we actually played together is Traz, a multilayer brick breaker game. We played it on the new C64 mini a few years ago.

My two most memorable C64 games are Krakout (brick breaker game) and Bop 'n' Rumble (beat 'em up). Both with infinite lives hack of course. But I discovered Sziget a few years ago, a.k.a The Island (can be played here, very simple and fun game about escaping an uninhabited island) and Démonok Kastélya 2 (rescue the princess, full of mini games, but only available in Hungarian.)

Maybe I'm dumping too much information but if you liked NES classics, try Mega Man if you haven't already. I got all the main line games form a bundle a few months ago (from 1 to 11), and it blew my mind how enjoyable it is (well, rewind helped a lot too). It came out only 2 years after Mario. And sorry Mario, but I prefer Mega Man's non-slippery controls and non-instant death. (Not like I hate instant death, I have 140 hours in Celeste after all.)

(No, I didn't do it for competition, I made this wall of text out of enthusiasm.)
tinshard Dec 3, 2023 1:48 AM
Hiya! Nice profile! It's cool you're still active after 7 years.

I didn't understand what's so good about sports anime until recently. Then I started reading The Magnificent Grand Scene and it blew my mind (it's not about sports in the traditional meaning though.) I might try One Outs in the future, that's the only real sports anime that got my attention. But if you have a recommendation that you think I might like more, go ahead.

About the games you mentioned, which versions of them are your favorites? I didn't really play retro games as a kid (only C64 games thanks to my father), but now I'm really interested in them. Especially with emulators where I can cheat with the save states.

(Wow, I wrote a lot. Well, you mentioned you wanted to practice English anyway.)
