Is this shounen-ai?

The MC is way too feminine to be a boy.

Make five more threads about it.
Kobayashi is based on Yoshio Kobayashi, character from Edogawa's books. He is described as androgynous in his works.

Maybe someone should have looked up the word 'androgynous'. It means to have an appearance that looks both feminine and masculine, not to look the exact opposite of your actual gender in every way.

Right now, as far as I'm concerned, Kobayashi is a chick pretending to be a guy for the heck of it to make life more interesting.

He isn't drawn androgynous, he's drawn as a girl. It's a girl, you can tell by the voice actress.

Kobayashi is boy. He's going to be the Hideyoshi(Baka and Test) to me where he looks, talks, and sounds like a girl but I have to keep telling myself he's a boy.

having a female voice actress isn't exactly uncommon, esp for younger male characters lol

Might as well be a girl. Unlike Nagisa from Ansatsu, though that's a bit of a stretch, thus far there doesn't seem to be any way to tell this is a boy. But the character seems a little boring judging from episode 1. Absolutely no reaction to anything that has gone on around him.

The heck does that mean? I'm just pointing out that her character design in no way fits the definition of the word 'androgynous.' If she really is a guy then this is just a plain old trap that frankly we're getting too much of lately. It's gonna get old fast if it keeps happening, especially if the trap character also keeps being the MAIN character.

You're absolutely right. He's drawn as a girl not even as androgynous. It's a full on trap. But what makes it even harder to think he's male is because of his voice. Yes male characters have female seiyuu all the time, but the difference is this seiyuu isn't even trying to sound male its simply a girl's voice.

I really don't see why there's an argument about it. The trap is a trap. The end.

No, a trap is a modern invention. The books with Kobayashi were children's books. In them he was portrayed as an extremely attractive 12 year old boy, so young and fair of face he could pass for a woman, but a boy nonetheless. It would be more accurate to describe him as the original "pretty boy".

Puts even Hime Arikawa to shame :p

Seriously now: it has very clear hints of shounen-ai with Hashiba's reactions, though Kobayashi probably doesn't care for it in any manner.

He was deliberately made effeminate to give yaoi overtones, obviously. Even if he wasn't effeminate, in a series like this, yaoi fans are gonna see yaoi no matter what anyways. Scratch that, yaoi fans are gonna see yaoi no matter what, period. Sometimes it doesn't even require two conical males.

A large reason why people say wait for the dubs for Dragon Ball. Goku sounding like a little old lady is idiotic. Shitty voice acting is shitty voice acting. Voice acting is often the worst part of anime, they just don't seem to give a crap about how bad it is. Even Ghibli movies often have several actors so bad you wonder if they were just pulled off the street.

I do think they crossed the line between androgynous and straight up trap with this one.

He isn't just a feminine looking guy.

He looks like a girl. sounds like a girl. acts like a girl. gets treated like a girl. and dresses like a girl. That may be a guy's blazer and pants, but all of the other guys wear a tie. He's the only one wearing a pink blouse/ ascott thing clearly meant for female students.

Androgynous is Hideyoshi from BakaTest or Asuramaru from Owari no Seraph. Feminine looking boy is Totsuka from Oregairu.

This is just next tier, lol.

She's not designed as androgynous anymore. That was straight up a girl design minus the big titties. In real life a boy would still have masculine traits even if he has feminine features. I blame my weird boner on the character designer.

The way she looks straight up spells female specially if you look at his/her/it's waist. It's got some curve. She doesn't exactly act girly but not manly either. His/her/it's personality is kind of bothering me. It's kind of inhumane for the MC to remain unphased even if the events are causing excitement in his/her life. I decided to just call it a him to go with the flow and see if the MC gets exposed as female later on.
