Starting to really love this anime. Really unhappy about announcing the death though, that's just silly to destroy the surprise factor like that. But it's really shaping up to be a great anime. Can you imagine this kind of drama if a guild member died in an MMO dungeon run each time haha ;p Most interesting depiction of an MMO in an anime so far, not that that was a hard thing to do tbh. Really looking forward to the rest now. Even starting to appreciate the slow pace and music.

Good episode, though no way this death would have an impact based on the character development for Manato.

That moment when the most useful person in your party dies. And he's the only healer too. :L

The way this series handles the MMORPG setting is interesting. I'd like to think the goblins were getting some revenge on top of defending their territory. The fact that they worked together was nice too, shows that they're intelligent.

damn shame if only i didn't see all the death flags from before, while his death wasn't as impactful mainly because we barely knew him it still sucked i think the most interesting part was how all of them reacted differently to it not only that the small scene of the other team showed how it affected them also.

boy goblin chieftain fight is gonna be brutal i bet now.

wow

fuck this

Real talk tho, why do the best always have to die first? Hoping Ranta goes next, at the very least. Also stop bawling like he was your lover, Shihoru: your dumb ass was unworthy.

Other than, it was a fairly uneventful episode, which I guess was supposed to serve as a build up to Manato's death. Problem is, it was all done so poorly that everything that came before the goblins' ambush felt like nothing more than unecessary fluff wrapped up by a clumsy and way too obvious death flag. As a result the surprise attack and the following events seriously lacked in impact, and I ended up being more annoyed than genuinely sad about my favorite character's death. To top it off, most of the lines this episode ranged from beyond asinine to plain retarded. I mean, seriously:

All-in-all yeah, a not so good episode.

I suspected Manato's death based on last week's preview, like most people did I'm sure, but I didn't think it would actually happen this early on. And out of all the characters in the group, they just had to kill my favorite one. I was praying it would be Ranta, but of course it's always the best character that dies. RIP Manato, you will be missed. He was a great leader and strategist, so I wonder who will take over those roles now? Probably either Haruhiro or Yume.

This marks the beginning of every character getting killed off... jk, seems the goblins knew exactly who to aim for. Whether he looked like the leader or simply because he was a healer, the goblins knew where to hit them the hardest. It's possible the earlier goblin that was possibly different then the rest was a sign too. In other words, the weaker goblins were becoming more rare as they were being killed off, leaving only the stronger ones which were far better at retaliating.

All unnecessary speculation. A member has died and it seems one of them has to step up and find a replacement healer since that was the only reason they could fight as much as they did. I can't say I'm completely accurate with my deduction, so we'll see.

Really great episode. It made me appreciate the little bit of character development the group got in the last 3 episodes a little more. I loved how every member of the party had their own reaction when they sent Manato's ashes away.

In the end I think that some character deaths are about the person and some are about those who are left alive. This is much more the second one. Manato himself only got so much focus and so his death isn't going to hit us that hard. But they've been out there with Manato for a month or more, they've relied on this guy to lead them and help them survive. Now he's dead and there's nothing they can do to change that.

And the result was quite good. Everyone just looks hit hard and is responding in different ways. Ranta just utterly shutting down once they were talking about what had to be done. Shihoru just breaking down as well with Yume taking care of her.

It was a good episode. The group had gotten confident, maybe a bit cocky and this just utterly slaps them in the face. It will be up to the group and Haruhiro especially to pull them together so they don't fall apart entirely.

In LN Manato died because of Haru. (said by Ranta)

The anime make it less action and skip the whole battle scene, which also overlook the important factor why he couldn't use healing at his deathbed.
his dying message for Haru is the same tho'.

The pacing of this series is absolutely atrocious. It is a pretty show, but much like video games good graphics doesn't mean a good show. I can understand using the events of this episode as a springboard for deeper stuff and the episode itself was quite good, but the large cast made it extremely difficult to build any emotional attachment to one of them in such a short amount of time.

What the hell is wrong with this anime?
15 minutes naratives/ slice of life + action, then 10 minutes of music video, every, fuckin, episode!
Seriously man? I know the art was good with paint brush styled background and shit, 4 episode and their leader just dead, without development and emotional affection from exposition? And they cried? Fuckin teenagers, What a raggdoll! Other than that? What happened?
I'll keep up till the end and have to start reading the LN just to see, if this shit has a dynamic at all...

Things just happen in this episode. Didn't feel the weight of any the scenes and we're just watching the pretty pictures go by. The scene where Ranta questions Yume about the point of her story and Manato interrupts with character observation basically sums up this anime.

Manato getting killed could be foreseen just by looking at the character guide on MAL. He's been "supporting" the entire time yet he was the leader of the group. He needed to die to make the group stronger and overcome this. I guess you could have killed Mogzo, like it would be a blow but they probably wouldn't be this upset, and you're not killing Haruhiro because he's main...although that would be one crazy twist.

Overall a decent episode, and it was cool to see some of the other people from episode one watching the White Smoke.

Also no tears were shed, I didn;t really like Manato that much anyway.

I wonder if there'll be montages every episode.

I reckon that fight scene was a little abrupt. Seeing as they were surprised attack, there should have been a little more panic which would have solved the issue. Alternatively, the goblins could have put up a better chase. Now the event was actually foreshadowed. As a user pointed out above, they had poor strategy. This would have inevitably led to disaster in the future.

When they were running away, the arrow was not shown on Monato's back when it should have been there.

I couldn't really enjoy the song at the end because there were no lyrics. I'll probably rewatch it when a fansub is released.

Am I the only one who got annoyed by Yume's dialect?
I mean, come on.
It's like her childish way of talking ramped up from being cute to being annoying.

That mid transition between part A to B was weird.

The death lacked something important.
I was like "Oh, okay he died. -_-"
The goblin murder scene was much more powerful IMO.

And I wish this anime would stop it with the Insert Songs.
The last episode was cool, but if you do the same trick again it will become stale real fast.
The characters were talking but we can't even hear what the heck they're saying because of the damn song.

I honestly loved Yume's tone when she ramped things up at the end of her sentences. It makes her seem so cute and innocent ^_^. I absolutely love her voice actress; I need to see who is voicing her.

As for the episode, it veered off a little from how they encountered the goblins in the LN. They purposefully fought those goblins in the LN (and for a longer time) while in her they just kind of crossed paths I guess? Either way, it didn't effect my enjoyment. The anime made the goblins seem a lot more dangerous than what it seemed in the LN which I think is cool.

I can't get over how beautiful the art is in this anime and some of the animation. The music is good when it is placed properly which is was in this episode. The dialogue between the characters seems genuine and all of their interactions don't seemed forced at all for the sake of character development. As someone said above, the reason why Manato's death lacked impact is because he wasn't known by us or his teammates very well; there was a reason for it. Someone also stated that the party relied too much on Manato which is true. He was ALWAYS in the front lines, used his mana ineffeciently by healing every single scratch/wound because he was concerned for his team, and all of the burdens went on him as a team leader. This lead to his downfall and now the team must learn from this, adapt with a new priest in the team, and figure out how to lead for themselves.

Can't wait for my favorite character

Great episode 5/5.

Also for people complaining about them killing Goblins alot: This is a realistic aspect of the show. Its not like Kirito where he just starts merking everything with his OP skills. These people had no fighting skills whatsoever. Think of it this way, if you were put in this world with 0 knowledge or training you would be stuck killing Goblins just to barely survive day by day. Heck most people on here would probably die by a goblin. This is not an action anime, it heavily relies on a realistic tone so things will show what would happen if your or a friend had to go through this situation (if you think of it this way). This is exactly what you would be doing with 0 basic skills to survive in this unknown world.

Really excited to see how the rest of the characters handles his death and also if they will introduce a new healer or if they will try to continue without one.

If this is your AOTS, then you're doing it wrong.

Someone likes this show more than you do and thinks its THEIR AOTS? The horror. They MUST be wrong.

That episode just did nothing for me.

Was it sad that Manato died? I guess, but I felt absolutely nothing. From their POV, he's a comrade that they've bonded with since day one, and it's emotionally devastating for them. For the viewer, this show has had a total run time of 96 minutes so far between 4 episodes, and Manato's scenes probably only equal 50% of that time or less. And in that +/- 48 minutes, we knew almost nothing about him except that he was friendly, sociable, smart, and liked animals. Sorry, that's just not enough invested there for me to care.

and AGAIN, they were murdering this episode with insert songs. They had two different ones this episode, lol. And of course, the death scene one was another full 4 minute one composed 90% of stills, and zero dialogue. That ending scene right after they scatter his ashes and are standing in a group, that really irked me, because: it was STILL a part of the insert song, they replayed the same frame for like 25 seconds - just them standing there with the breeze blowing, and the art for those frames wasn't even good. Haruhiro and Yume's faces had like DBZ Super level of quality. It just blows my mind that if they reused the same frame for half a minute that they didn't make the quality god tier.

And maybe this one is just me, but I felt like his death was kind of preventable. Maybe they weren't thinking because of the running away, but there had to have been a time between them running and them stopping where they were no longer being pursued and he could've had time to heal himself. He was fucked once he was too tired to channel magic, but it seems like there had to be same window of opportunity whether it was shown or not.

Kind of sucks for them they had to pay to have him cremated and couldn't just throw his body on a bonfire like a Viking death. Because of course now they'll probably have a fear of fighting goblins again.

I think that's one of the problems though. There needs to be a balance of course. You cant have every character be Kirito god OP where they fuck shit up and cant die. But in this show the characters are so pathetic that they aren't even all that interesting to watch, especially in combat.

I feel like that first group of people that had talent and partied up ahead of them would have been more interesting to watch. Everybody who teleported to that world started out on equal footing: no memories, no idea how the world worked, no combat experience, etc. They just all happened to adapt to this world right away and became skilled and successful. But they still go through the same challenges, having to kill stuff and whatnot, they still sleep in town and cook their food and have dumb conversations I'm sure. They're still fragile humans so they're equally at risk for death fighting their level creatures as Haruhiro's group is with goblins.

Idk, just feels like that group achieved a better balance. They're stuck in the same world. They have the same hardships (aside from being poor), they're not Kirito OP so they can still die at any moment, but they're still capable of fighting with some degree of skill, and are probably well past goblins at this point.

They got far too cocky, and paid the ultimate price.
Any fan of MMO's can tell you their positioning was horrible. And Manato babied them too much. He never forced them to look at their own flaws, and weak points. He just said, "We cover each other" Had the hunter learned how to use a bow, they could have picked off the crossbow gobs as they retreated. If the mage learned offensive magic, instead of support magic, they could have fought back.
But most of all, you never send the back line to lead the way!

Still, he didn't deserve to die. Rest in peace man

They won't be killing Goblins forever :). In the anime its not so bad, since the pacing is sped up. in the LN I think they were killing Goblins until the middle or end of Volume 2 lol. In all honesty though, it did not get boring at all in the light novel. You can see how they are gaining new skills, making more money (by killing more Goblins a day and bigger groups), and learning how to map areas. Once its time for them to move on to bigger and better it will be like they earned it. Fortunately for the anime viewers only this isn't a 24 episode anime where the pacing would be slowed down by a lot and they would be killing Goblins for like 12-15 episodes haha

I think people's main issue with this episode is that they are mistaking the death as an emotional sucker punch. I didn't see it as emotional thing, I saw it more as a gut punch that shows that actions have consequences, it's a common technique used in games; show that actions have consequences in the beginning and it gets everyone be more critical of all choices there after. That right there is what I think the point of the death was

The only problem I had with this episode was the fight scene and the ambush part, in the LN it was so... different, and made a lot more sense and had more impact there. I mean, they saw the goblins and discussed if should attack, they did, they started to lost and tried to run away and then Manato got shot in the back. Was so much more "damn you guys fucked up that's why one of you died" than this, and the fight was more epic there, with Ranta almost getting beheaded and stuff. But I suppose they didn't have time for everything in this episode, unless they finished it with Manato dying and started the next episode on his guild.
Oh well, even with that bugging me, I still enjoyed the second part and the episode overall. Let's see what they do next.

Lmao, yeah i hear you on that. I feel like thats why they decided to make it a shorter show with a faster pacing to it. The story the write is trying to portray I feel like lends itself better to the LN than it does an anime. This is just my opinion though from what I have seen. The pacing in this episode was fast and they skipped some important details like the whole encounter with the Goblins at the end, as well as, not including the missing arrow in Manato's back lol.

The way they Kill goblins is the least realistic aspect of the show. Being unable to hit an enemy from behind unless your job is a thief is as far removed from reality as you can get. If this was truely a show about realistic fantasy, then the combat wouldn't be constrained to video game tropes.

Also, Kirito started out by killing boars. There was a timeskip after that. Regardless, it was made clear to the viewer that SAO's combat wasn't supposed to be realistic. Its a game, after all. Even the title of the series itself screams "video game". The same cannot be said of "Grimgar of Fanservice and Edge".

Saw this as a more relaxed anime, was enjoying it, and then BOOM. Immediately shakes things up.

So good, can't wait for next episode.

Not bad, but why the hell spoil he is about to die right before the action happens. Took away a bit of the impact when you tell us up front "or so i thought" come on.

I figured that he was gonna die eventually. I like this take on the whole MMORPG aspect since we're so used to shows like SAO and Log Horizon, its a breath of fresh air. Insert songs are becoming a bit much, hope they tone that down a little bit. Otherwise, great episode.

WOW. I was skeptical of the death flag. But when it happened, I didn't see it happening like that. And I figured he would pick him to be the next leader. Oh the struggles that will come next.

We are also introduced to the other characters that will make their debut.....again.

Intense stuff. Also, thanks Fappa, you've given some deep insights about how the story works and such.

Anyway, from a story point of view, this is great. Things are picking up. RIP Manato, though. The softest guys always tend to bite the dust first in these types of settings.
