(I'm not a native Japanese but...)
It's an Edogawa Ranpo quote.
うつし世はゆめ よるの夢こそまこと
It means something along the lines of "This world is a dream; it is dreams at night that are the truth."

Oh, thank you. My curiosity was bugging me. And we actually did get that quote at the beginning of the first episode. And it might be more relevant to the story than I first thought (hope not, I reaaally don't like "it has all been a dream" kind of stuff).

This episode was a thousand times better than last weeks.

No shitty attempts at macabre humor, or asspull theories to solve crimes. We finally got the dark, gritty drama the show advertised itself to be.

Almost too much so though, lol. That shit was fucked up.

Poor girl, and poor Shadow-Man. Just wanted to see her be happy and live a fulfilled life after having a shit start to life, and then it gets taken away by some fat guy who murdered her and put her body in concrete. And she wasn't the only one.

I am Japanese. I transrated this phrase.

うつし世はゆめ 夜の夢こそまこと
(utsushiyo wa yume. Yoru no yume koso makoto.)

~Real world is just a dream. A night dream is the truth.~

Edogawa Ranpo used this phrase habitually.

This phrase had been effected on British novelist Walter John De La Mare.

Is Shadow-man meant to be Twenty Faces, or are they completely different?

Anyway since I'm guessing Shadow-man will be a reoccurring character I think this episode would have worked better later down the line.

Even if both seem to have similar role in this version(Akechi's rivals who can disguise themselves), no. The 20 Faced Fiend is most likely the skull thing because that is what was written below the skull on that website near the end.

Why are people still complaining about the mystery aspect of this series?
Isn't obvious that, after these last 2 episodes, the main focus of this anime ISN'T the solving of the mystery? Just because it has the "mystery" tag doesn't mean it's going to be Sherlock Holmes...

chaos dragon-good

welp, not even crazy diamond can fix shit taste.

the whole concept of chaos dragon is flawed and boring, also the animation looks meh and cg is terrible to say the least, the only good thing it has is character desgn, because obviously the character design was left single persons that already had some sort of talent.

Indeed, that's probably the best way to approach it now considering what we've seen. Not for the mystery, but for the weird tone in the story and the strange characters.

Btw, the OP is really great. Thought it was good in the first episode, but now after listening to it much more I'm warming up to it even further.

Oh the mystery is very much the focus. Its just that the mystery is NOT always about the cases on hand but about the over-arching story arcs happening at the same time.

Akechi would not have changed his mind, therefore he knew that the guy was an imposter and having just heard about him, he would had that on top of his mind.

Likewise, if he was to be the bait, then it seems clear that Shadow Guy would have a way of tracking him. Kobayashi knew that his phone and obvious tracking devices would be destroyed.

Both are very reasonable conclusions, so nothing really amazing about Kobayashi's deductions, except of course for the core one: he has no surprise that there could be a master of disguises or worry that there could be a serial killer who would abduct him. Indeed one could say that he was predisposed towards those answers.

The legitimate group are those who were expecting a hardcore mystery/horror show. They had their anticipation disappointed.

Another legitimate group are those who do not like the general tone of the show. It isn't for everyone.

But a large group of haters hate the show because of Kobayashi's sexual ambiguity. Many pretend it is something else, but when you scratch a bit, their visceral hatred shows.

I love this anime. 1st episode was really good, 2nd episode was kinda boring but this one was just great. I'm just slightly bothered by Shadow Man looking like a weirdo and his magic powers. But other than that, I'm enjoying this way more than I thought I would. Hopefully, it will keep up with this level of quality.

I wouldn't care about the mystery at all, but the characters pulling clues and answers out of thin air bother me so much that it distracts me from the psychological horror elements that I usually love. This episode also felt quite rushed. I couldn't even get into that mystery mood.

I wonder if the one grabbing the skull at the end is Akechi? and if its some kind of a foreshadowing?
in the opening, everyone got that skull with those marks so i guess its something everyone got?

This episode tho... argh, Sachiko, god damn it.

The Shadow-man is quite a strong man, huh? he endured all that beating, which probably could break a bone or two, and got up and walked normaly disguised as a policeman.

Seriously tho, i really enjoy to think that Kobayashi is crossdressing on purpose to confuse people even more..!
Actually, id like to think thats the producer's goal as well, to show how twisted Kobayashi's character is i guess? He probably doesnt care about his gender at all,
At the first episode, he even blushed when he was confused as a girl and honestly, it looks like he enjoys it...
I dont remember him saying ,himself, that he is a boy.

Edit: Oh btw, whats up with those pills Akechi is taking? didnt see anyone comment about that. He takes them like.. every 5 minutes? are those anti-pain pills? what for then?
Sometimes he drinks them and sometimes he crushed them before he drink them, what?

Other than Kobayashi, who is really bringing this whole show down, this episode was far bette than last week's. The case itself wasn't necessarily more compelling and interesting on its own, but it caught me by surprise and was very fucked up. The Shadow Man is also an interesting character, one who I hope we see again somewhere down the line.

I wonder what was with that skull after the credits. I know that it was on that site Akechi was looking at right near the end, so I'm sure it'll be significant in some way or another.

I agree with all of this.

Wait a second, let me get this right.

Nine girls were kidnapped and all of them frequented a manga cafe, in fact they were kidnapped in the cafe (I'm assuming, since Kobayashi refers to them as "They" as if the staff are in on it) . Yet despite this the police saw nothing shady about a bunch of girls mysteriously disappearing all in the exact same place instead of keeping it under watch 24/7 for any mysterious fat asses.

He was caught and then dismissed after psychiatric evaluation.

wait a sec, how would kobayashi be bringing down the show? to me, it's the main investigator(the siscom guy) that it's hurting the cast, and well, the fact that they're using the 2 mcs(private detective and kobayashi) to joke around the viewers comments, but the character themselves are pretty good, i can't see how kobayashi is ruining the show.

Drug problem.

He is clearly tortured by some sort of past experience(going by the three flashbacks he got in the first episode) and he is dealing with it by being almost constantly wasted via pain medication and other stuff

okay, I have long been defending this show, but now I'm getting confused and quite disapointed

the original Kogoro Akechi is supposed to be a genius detective solving cases with his brilliant deduction

here he is indeed presented as an elite investigator but...that it.

he does NOTHING. It's been 3 episodes now and he doesn't even move his little finger trying to solve anything

and for some reason he didn't want to get involved in this childnapping case

He doesn't even act as a mentor, Kobayashi is the one doing everything on his own

what the hell is wrong with him?? putting K-O the bad guy isn't enough for me at all, he should be INVESTIGATING SOMETHING for cryin out loud

You just don't get it, real life detectiving gets done with random people randomly figuring out how a person got kidnapped and then just following the kidnapper with a GPS, that's how it's really done.

It is implied that he is interested ONLY in very specific cases(possibly somehow connected to that skull mask stuff).

Its no different on how Sherlock could not care less for "more generic" cases in the current adaptation.

Absolutely loved this episode.
Sure the plot was gruesome and morbid, but it's enjoyable as heck to watch nonetheless. Shadow-man's story was interesting, and they introduced him and his abilities well. One little complaint would be that he admitted to not being able to transform himself into a woman, and yet could still portray the loli-kidnappers mother quite well anyway. A lie within a lie?

The case itself this week was quite simple, and though I enjoy my action scenes, I thought it was quite artistic when they used a drama-esque stage to portray both the flashbacks that Shadow-man had and also to explain the kidnapping of Kobayashi. That was some artsy stuff there.

Kobayashi's lack of awareness of self-danger, and his willingness to run straight into it at any given time so long as it interests him, is vaguely disturbing at times. The show is playing it off as normal, but if anyone ever thought about it, wouldn't a self-preservation instinct normally triumph over any other instinct in the world? The way he goes about risking life and limb, even knowing that help is not far away, seems so unnatural. I mean, one can have only so much faith in people and situations outside of their control right? Yet Kobayashi displays extreme trust in things working out somehow. Either that or I'm reading him wrong and he's in it for the thrills and really doesn't mind getting killed in the process...

I was actually surprised that Akechi even showed up in the end, given his lack of interest in the entire case. I figured that the cops probably would have dealt with it themselves.

Looking forward to seeing if they ever reveal Shadow-Man's back story (and the reason for his love of lolis). Want more story about the skulls

Direction is definitely the strongsuit of the show, especially this time. The climactic moment that Shadown Man's hopes were crushed hit me pretty hard, but the rest of the episode didn't follow up on that point very well imo(other than Shadow Man shown fleeing the scene in tears).

The backstory and buildup between the girl and Shadow Man was brilliantly done though, which is why the result was so heart crushing.

Ok, after this episode I'm pretty sure my expectations for this show were completely wrong. I was kinda expecting a mystery show, but the characters are just caricatures and the mysteries are not intelligent at all (if you can even call it a mystery).
I still like the MC's weird personality, but I feel the mystery aspect and the storytelling is just too weak for me to keep in watching this. This is probably better off classified as a horror show than mystery.

NO for fuck sake , mistery means mistery,it could be a psychological mistery, a fantasy mistery even aliens mistery, it doesn't imply at all costs an investigation.

you could say that in this case the mistery lies in how these people could be considered normal in public, that's that.

Nope, in literature and film mystery clearly implies an investigation to solve the mystery itself, with the facts and clues being presented clearly to the reader/watcher.

Even if what you say is true, my problem with the show was that I expected a classical mystery show (e.g. Holmes) and got a surrealistic horror. I'm not saying the show is bad, it's just not what I expected and wanted to watch.

EDIT: Plus your whole argument about a mystery not needing an investigation fails for this anime, since it clearly has detectives and investigations, it's just that they are badly done.
