You can only register the manga on your challenge list, when the specific challenge is called, or?

I'm not sure what you're asking, but you're supposed to include it in your list once you have finished reading it and you don't have to complete them in any particular order.
Basically, you can start completing your entire list at any given time, when you begin the challenge?

Fuudanjuku Monogatari - a cute male-leads-in-shoujo-demographic manga by Tanemura Arina; I'm surprised this isn't a bit higher.

I think I'll check this one out, thanks for the rec!

Yes, that's right. Participants will keep track of their progress themselves and they can start adding completed manga to their list as soon as they want once they have signed up.

Sure will!! :)

I also recommend Hoshi no Samidare.. It's one of my favorite manga, just re-read it three weeks ago and I liked it even more!! It fits on sci-fi/fantasy and a recommendation!! :D (I even rated it 10)

Yes, Hoshi no Samidare is one of my favorite as well! It fits seinen demographics, too.

How do I put this, I'm on chapter 5 and it's been interesting, easy-going story, nice but simple art (as expected of Yoshitomi Akihito).. It sure has a ridiculous plot (in the best way), it's funny yet not too much, also keeping it serious in some parts.. I like it.. :)

Edit: It sure escalated quickly, I can tell you that.. xD

Edit 2: And now I'm on chapter 11 and I think it's a good idea to recommend that you read Prunus Girl maybe you will find it to your liking, maybe not.. :P

- HeNrYTG50 : well , you just gave me two more things to read for the challenge I think haha , thanks .
I think I'll use Prunus Girl as "manga recommended to you by another participant" then ( I kind of have a soft spot for "gender bender" stories , will it be a "true swap" or cross-dressing ) , and I'll read Hoshi no Samidare for "sci-fi OR fantasy manga" (it's not tagged with those on MAL though , so I hope it's a "valid read" for that) .
It's true that I heard a lot of praise for Hoshi no Samidare in the past , so this challenge will finally push me to read it .

Some general suggestions:
I-Revo: Ice Revolution: counts for female lead in a male demographics, shonen, and comedy.
Otomen: counts for male lead in a female demographics, shoujo, and comedy.
Nodame Cantabile: counts for a male lead in a female demographics (though this could be debatable, I guess?), josei, comedy, slice of life and music
Planetes: counts for seinen, slice of life and sci-fi
2001 Ya Monogatari: counts for seinen and sci-fi

They're various lengths, but all finished publishing and have scanlations available. I'm not sure about licenses though.

Hoshi no Samidare is truly praiseworthy, and the funny thing is, Prunus Girl is one of the best love stories I've ever read, and I'm not that much into genderbender.. :P And it's great that you liked my recommendations!! :)

- Higashi_no_Kaze : I see we have some common plannings , and I didn't even do that on purpose for MW and Dororo haha . I would be interested to have your impression on "Panorama Island" , "Nijigahara Holograph" and "Subarashii Sekai" after your read , if you don't mind (sad thing "Umibe no Onnanoko" and "Oyasumi Punpun" aren't at hand for you yet , but it will come sure enough I think ) .
Since you like Gekiga , I highly suggest you to read things from Kazuo Kamimura . It seems "Dousei Jidai" or "Kantou Heiya" are not translated in english or german , but "Lady snowblood"seems to have been , and "Furious Love" too (haven't read that one yet , but i'm pretty sure it's very good) . Really if you can , read some manga of him , it definitely worth it .

I like seeing Trouble is my Business ^^. I guess that means you're french or german because I don't think it is scanlated or licensed in english. I just finished it yesterday and it was a pretty entertaining collection of short (the chapters are only vaguely related to each other by having the same MC) with visible influences from film noir. Good stuff, like everything Taniguchi does :>.

Also thanks for the rec, I'll definitely give the guy a try. I am a bit skeptical about Lady Snowblood though because I'm not too fond of Kazuo Koike as a writer and it's also a bit longer than his other works. Kantou Heiya sounds the most interesting but unfortunately it's not available as you said, so I'll probably go with Shinanogawa for now and if I like his style and atmosphere then I'll give his other works a go. I guess I can't read Shinanogawa for the challenge though since you only mentioned Lady Snowblood and Furious Love xD.

I'll also let you know my thoughts on the titles you mentioned (I might just post my thoughts on any manga I read for the challenge in this thread anyway), but I'm very optimistic that I'll love the two Asano works since I've already read and loved Solanin and Sun Village. Panorama Island was more of a blind buy but I expect at least the visuals to be great.
I probably regret this post by now.

My policy for what counts for ongoing series:

- Webmanga - catch up and keep up until the end of the year. Otherwise you could read the first chapter of a new series and claim it's "done". Obviously this may become possible anyway towards the end of the year but I think it will be easy to come up with a solution to that. Perhaps saying a minimum of 3 chapters or so would work.
- Other manga - catch up with all released volumes*. Volumes released in December don't count as chances are I won't get them before the end of the year. For obvious reasons the minimum here is one whole volume.
*note that this is released volumes in Japan

I still have no idea what will fill most of my slots, but finding stuff over the course of the year is half the point.

It's worth noting that if I complete the task then I will probably be reading 20 or so of these series in Japanese. So I'm also setting myself a requirement of at least 90% understanding of everything I read, which makes the reading process a whole lot slower as I have to look up stuff all the time. Will improve my Japanese skills, though.

- Higashi_no_Kaze : The truth is , I too consider Lady snowblood to be pretty average , I only mentioned because at least I guess It can be a "window" to Kamimura's art style ( I personally love his style). But yes , when he his at the writing , it's above the rest . It's because I'm French that I had the chance to read Kantou Heiya and Dosei Jidai . Arf , It's just that I forgot to mention Shinanogawa since I haven't read it yet (and then If you read it I'll definitly want your opinion on it) . You know what , just consider I have recommended it to you anyway hahaha ^^.
"Panorama" is definitly good , moreover with the book in hand to fully appreciate the art style I'm sure.
As for "Trouble is my Business" , I'll start it tonight I think . Every single one works of Taniguchi have been translated in french , and they sell better here than in Japan hahaha . At this rate he his more French than Japanese anyway ^^. He did worked with Moebius in the past after all (even if "Icaro" wasn't very good in my opinion).

I'm still trying to find what is left for my reading planning (it's on page 2 of the thread) before going full NEET speed , so If any person have a suggestion...Especially for very good "food" and "war" manga (no , Higashi_no_Kaze , not "the gourmet" please ^^) .

I'm so envious how many great manga are licensed in France and nowhere else :(. A lot of authors get the credit they deserve in France. And I also know how popular Taniguchi is in France, there will even be an adaption of Summit of the Gods and Taniguchi got knighted as well. Almost all his works have been licensed in german too though, and I'm optimistic the remaining ones will follow soon-ish. I am a Moebius fan as well so I'm itching to read Icaro but that's one of the ones that are still missing and the english version is out of print as well :/.

As for recommendations, I don't have much to say about food manga that are not The Gourmet, but I know Oishinbo was one of the most popular manga in Japan for a long time so I'm kinda interested in it.

As for war, there's Enemigo or Tezuka's Buddha (or Adolf) as well as Eden: It's an Endless World, that come to mind.
I probably regret this post by now.

I'm going to probably read series that are completed so I can cross off for sure sure. Like some others, I am going to keep a progress in my blog too so I don't lose track completely..

Haven't came up with a roster list yet but we'll see how it goes. Right now, I just started a horror manga called Franken Fran after being it stuck on my backlog for ages. Also reading Umineko and a bunch of other series (most of them ongoing though).

One question though: If a series is tagged with multiple genres, does it count for only one genre from the list for it to be checked off? Or does it have to only have THAT one specific genre to be checked off?

Say, I'm reading this series right now:
http://myanimelist.net/manga/5806/Franken_Fran

It has the genres: Comedy, Horror, Supernatural, Psychological, Seinen
That would check off only for the horror part right? Or do I have to select a manga with only horror as a genre by itself?

I in my opinion would agree that Franken Fran is a "horror", but I think that if you go to "Popular tags" and the desired tag (In this case "Horror") got the biggest letters, I think you're safe to go from there. (-3- though I don't think it'd mean that if it wasnt the biggest, it wouldn't count)

Just by having one of the tags you can use it, yeah. I don't think I've seen manga with just one tag, usually you have at least some general genre tag and the demographics. The point is for it to fit that. I've read a bit of it and yeah, I think it counts for horror.

For food manga, there's Hell's Kitchen. I really like it, has good art, solid story (imo) and interesting characters and situations, all the while being about food.

Then there's the obvious Shokugeki no Souma. Which I find interesting but puts emphasis on the shounen side of cooking, and has hilarious and intriguing references.. Normally welcomed by the phrase we all have come to know and love... "Shokugeki no Souma is a cooking manga."

Is Eat-Man a manga about food? :v (jk)

Then we have the cuter, and completely opposite side of food, you could even call it, the Yotsuba& style of food if you must, with Kyou, Curry! we come to know the (short, yet) interesting story of Haruse Urara and her experiences with her father's curry shop, I found it to my liking.

On the other hand with a more shoujo feel we got Petite Peche! with only 2 chapters, but it's a nice story, not too much impact, yet interesting..

That's all for my food recommendations. xD Hope you like one of them.. n_n
Btw, I would like to know your thoughts on Prunus Girl, as I haven't really known others' opinions on it.. :P

@Dullboy

Whaaaaaaat, it was all going well, sure it's a little exagerated at times, and a bit too lewd at others, but the character development was there, and the new characters were interesting, the story was getting somewhere, why.. ;-; whyyyy do all the good ones die young? T_T I expected a great ending and ended up with this.. :( the bonus chapter was fine, but I really don't understand the reasons behind leaving it as open as can be, much similar to it getting axed or something of the like.. Even the newer characters' story got finished in a high note.. who could have predicted this madness.. :'(

I'm sad now.. u_u

HeNrYTG50 : you sure are of great help with your recommendation , thanks a lot , again .
Yes , I know , the ending really is a let down , but I prefered to not tell you before because I think it still worth reading ( That's why I rated it 6 and not 7 though ) . I hope your not too sad about it ^^ .

Kyou, Curry! looks good to me , i'll read it (looks also too short though...) . On the other hand I found this thing called "Curry naru Shokutaku" (addicted to curry) , but the translation are ongoing I guess...( 47 volume !!? Maybe I'll pass...) , and I don't really feel like reading something not completed for this challenge .

I'll give you my thoughts about Prunus Girl , but I don't know when I'll read it (soon enought I think) .

Just for the fun , I came across This trying to find food manga...but It look like it talk about eating a different kind of food , If you see what I mean hum hum . First Yaoi I will read , wish me luck ^^ .

- Stark700 and JOJOAOAA : I actually readed Franken Fran (started along with UnoPuntoCinco) , but kind of stopped at volume 7 , didn't felt like reading more . In my opinion it started really good and I was really liking it but the quality of the stories dropped a lot the more it goes . I like the art style of Fran and the other girls quite a lot also . Maybe I'll finish it in the near future .

Thanks again for the recommendation , Higashi_no_Kaze , but I'll read some other things (I can be pretty picky sometime , sorry ^^) .

Okay that's enought , time to actually start reading now

I'd also appreciate if someone recommended a good debut work. The works of the authors I've checked are either not available in English or uninteresting one-shots. Length doesn't matter, and I'm pretty much open to all genres/categories.

No problem about the recommendations, glad to help.. :) And it surely was worth reading, that's why I expected more.. :P (Also 6)
Addicted to Curry is a manga I think I'll read someday, but maybe it won't interest me enough once I get to it, who knows.. xD
I wish you luck, I haven't read any and I don't really plan to.. hahahaha, the reason I didn't pick the topic "read a manga of a genre you dislike" is because there's only one.. xD but everyone to his own taste, that's why it's fun to hear and learn about others' experiences.. ;)

If you want some more recommendations, don't forget to ask.. n_n

Well for my list I read Knife. And that was okay.

Utahime is Aki's first work, and I thought it was pretty good when I read it.

Midorikawa Yuki (creator of Natsume Yuujinchou and Hotarubi no Mori e) made Akaku Saku Koe for her first published work.

Question -- what counts as "children"? Do middle school students count or do they have to be young children?

Assuming middle school students count, I've sorted out everything except re-read (which will just be whatever), another user has read (which can wait) and the unanticipated flaw in the plan...
... a series that someone on my friends list has rated 10.
Leaving aside Andyrayy's gender bender stuff, which I have no interest in, there's only one person I have as a friend who I can really get them from and... well... "Manga compatibility with Torisunanohokori is:
Extremely Low". I'm tempted to approve one of the many random friends requests I've received just so that I have someone to get this from. But for now I will just wait things out...

Also, I'm not sure what webtoon is, but it probably counts as webcomic

I'll be tracking down my progress in a blog which I'll make tomorrow maybe and I'll put up the participant banner in my profile tomorrow.

But can someone recommend me as one the challenges is to read a manga requested by another participant. Thank you. (some thing in the horror, psychological, thriller genre please)

Look alive sunshine!
