To contrast the user above me, this was one of my least favorite fights in the series. For one, it went on far too long. I’d prefer for this to have been set up and finished in one or two scenes. Instead it was just Chinjao spinning on his head a few times or Luffy and Chinjao clashing fists or feet while DBZ teleporting. The announcer even giving the patented “I CAN’T EVEN SEE WHAT’S HAPPENING”! There was just nothing about this that I found engaging, even if this is more of a nod to Dragon Ball. The kind of fight they had wasn’t interesting or strategic until the end when Luffy decided to finish him off. Chinjao wasn’t all that interesting either and since I expected a gag from him I absolutely predicted his head would be punched so hard his drill would come back. Everything went according to how I’d expect without bringing engaging ideas to the table. Sure, this was a clash of conquerors haki meaning there were big shockwaves and it signifies Luffy’s initiation into the battle of kings, but that wasn’t enough for me. Plus with Chinjao’s anger setting him up to say literally everything to make Luffy hate him, I found it, like with the bull, somewhat cheap. “Luffy you should give up on being a pirate you suck, also your brother deserved to die, also Blackbeard, the guy whose largely responsible, is the only one of you guys who I believe in”. Talk about asking for a beating. Saying those could have come off great if I felt Chinjao had some depth or was more fun but instead, him being fueled by a gag and a grudge made him feel too shallow. To top it off, we already have, as someone mentioned, Duval who was hit so hard he became an ally. I argue that Hancock is similar, like Duval she was a pretty heinous person but she was won over and then became a comically loyal ally. Chinjao looks to get that treatment too now that he is in debt to Luffy for giving back his drill and in turn his fortune.
That said, he wasn’t all bad, I actually liked Sai in his display from the fight and the way he cared for Boo in his own way. That and how they watched together and rushed to their old man made me feel like this trio was a real family. And on top of that, Chinjao bashing his head into the ice while crying was actually sad! I did like that and how he reached for his drill the moment he woke up. Like I first said, if this was done much faster I think I’d like it more. He was too built up for such an uninteresting fight with uninteresting motives and a cheap way to make Luffy mad. At least Luffy dropping lines like “Stop whining over one punch! I can’t count how many times I got punched by him!” or “No, I’m not that interested.” when Chinjao asked if he wanted to know what happened were hilarious.
However, what came from this fight was pretty nice. First I think we saw the youngest Garp yet. Garp when he and Sengoku fought Shiki had gray streaks, same as when he was with Luffy and Ace as children. Here he had a full set of black hair! It was a nice detail and seeing him again put a smile on my face, even if he didn’t do much. I like to imagine he was doing some pretty awesome things while away from Luffy. Apart from Garp we got a full room of those who want to kill Luffy together. Bartolomeo and Cavendish revealing his identity while fighting over who gets to kill him. Bellamy no doubt preparing for the assassination in the back. Burgess overhearing and stating how exciting that was. I do wonder what kind of guy Burgess is, because pragmatically he shouldn’t hurt Luffy until after he won the fruit. One way would be to wait and fight him in the ring as I assume it would hypothetically occur. But we don’t know with him… Finally, also in this room of Luffy’s enemies, Rebecca was there as the one who didn’t fit in. She was just watching out of coincidence but maybe that’s some big brain foreshadowing that she too will be an enemy of Luffy. Hehe, probably not though.
As for the Thor finishing move, did Luffy just create electricity? In one of the movies he does that but uses real electricity he picks up from a cloud if I recall correctly. It didn’t look like haki but real electric crackling when they clashed. I suppose it goes with his Red Hawk however those work. |
