jmal said: Since its easy to assume the v1-2 REs will be the best selling of the REs, the RE average (currently 943) is bound to drop quite a bit. Maybe down to 500-600. So the big question becomes, if not many people are buying the REs, but v1-2 are still thousands and thousands of sales below where they realistically should be, what's going on? Either resellers are making a killing, or the Bandai Store encore press (not reported to Oricon, so not counted) has pushed like 5-6k discs of each volume, leaving little appetite for the REs. There has to be some explanation because I just do not believe there are 5k+ Girlpan fans out there with v3-5 who are content to never own v1-2. It will also be interesting to see how much v5 can realistically add after starting off so high. I mean when you sell almost as much opening week as v3 sold in 11 weeks, either the stock situation was somehow even worse than we thought or it's going to add far far less discs in wk2 onward than v3-4. It depends how many will be added when the mid-ranking list comes out. It will probably not be much at all due to the relatively low thresholds with a Top 100 weekly BD list now. v1 must have ranked outside the Top 200 a few times... but that would've not lost as much considering sales should be pretty low for >200 rank. I suspect it is just as you said... Bandai probably did receive several thousand orders to make the encore pressing viable to do. Some GaruPan fans would have cancelled their orders of the SE/RE in favour of the encore pressing for those bonuses bundled. And then there are the fans that were picked up along the way (after v1 LE was completely inflated in price on Amazon) who would've went for the encore pressing as well I suspect. There are some who would've been ignorant of an encore pressing happening at all or didn't care about the bonuses bundled at all. The ones who wanted the better quality BD version over the DVD, were the ones who bought the SE/RE. |

Right, this will account for virtually nothing. Maybe 1k if we're lucky. Nowhere near the sheer magnitude of this shortfall, which is probably the biggest I have ever seen in my time watching sales... That's so unfortunate... but what were they thinking, in selling more copies through the Bandai Visual Store instead of say HMV, Amazon, etc? I don't think people would mind if they took a bit longer to actually press more copies to fulfil the demand. I'm sure it wasn't just in their good faith for the conclusion of the TV anime broadcast. |

I imagine selling through your own store = much higher profit margin, since you're not giving a retailer a big cut. Normally you can't just do this because you need the retailers' distribution power (and buyers expect at least some discounts) but this is a special case where the demand was high enough that they could get away with it. Plus it probably also saved time not shipping to retailers. True, I didn't think of all the logistics costs of selling and distributing anime. This way also provided reassurance of an actual set date of delivery for the customers rather than continuing to take orders on Amazon and god knows when they would get delivered considering the demand. And yes, while it probably provided a higher profit margin, it also prevents resellers from just buying up all the stock on Amazon and making a further killing in reselling. I'm pretty sure a fair chunk of that restock at HMV earlier this year was bought up by the resellers. |

I just watched BD 6 tonight (had seen it a few times on Crunchy already) and it is another beautiful arc, so emotional! Gorgeous visually with wonderful sound on Bluray. Won't mention plot stuff in this thread, people hate that but... wow, I am just so impressed by this one from the OP to the ED (including the seiyuu version of the ED in 18 and they included a non-credit version, yeah!) and the stories and characters in between. Just love all the Little Busters! Can't wait for Refrain but I am very pleased with season 1 and will treasure the discs and illustration galleries in the booklets with the secrets.still cant believe LB in the list. but i'm so glad.. maybe refrain will be better. XD I'm just glad enough people bought it so they are doing Refrain! Would have been a shame if too many had stayed away from this season. Glad I helped make it happen in a small way, buying all the discs so far. Just a pain about the extra episode with the 800 yen shipping silliness. Wish they'd change their mind and just put it on disc 9... |

Wow... The fervor stirred up by the publication of the last volume of OreImo (with the much talked about ending) indeed has an impact on the disc sales. The release date of the novel is today and after this afternoon the BD vol.1 ranking has been moving up and it is now above every other titles except Shingeki no Kyojin... The novel has also gone out of stock in Amazon !![]() This is the graph for OreImo2 v1 in Amazon BD ranking from 20:00 yesterday to 20:00 today. |

So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old? I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them? I wonder how long people would put up with this. As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series. |

On balance I am inclined to think the release of the last volume has a lot more impact because those who were unsure before may now feel confident in placing the order now that the ending is clear and known, though the effect of the event announcement can never be fully dismissed I'd agree. ^ Do keep in mind that an event was just announced today for OreImo as well. hpulley said: That is more like an epilogue as the title of the short novel is "Reunion in the 10th year". ^ In this case, then perhaps this novel is an even bigger reason of the BD v1's rise in Amazon ranking than the release of the last volume of the novel. But then that short novel may not gather so much attention if the ending of the novel had not got so much attention and discussions... I guess the marketing has done quite a good job of stoking the interest of the BD by announcing the short novel extra on the same day when the novel is released. |

Regarding the OreImo short story (not novel), solicitations usually won't get updated barring certain circumstances (like the inclusion of the extra discs for Railgun v1/v5), so I wouldn't expect to see it change. This is why people cite the official site's listings rather than Amazon's. The short story is titled "Ten Year Reunion" so people may expect it to be an epilogue (though the description does not clarify when in-storyline the story takes place). |

Weak characterization and story, drama unable to leave any impact on viewer, unfunny comedy, usual JC Staff's mediocre art (or maybe even slightly worse)... I really wanted to like LB! because I heard a lot of good about the VN and wanted to see JC Staff doing something decently for once (after all, they are capable of it - see Ano Natsu) but no, it was just bad anime in my eyes. ^ I have never played the visual novel, but I think I enjoy LB! anime pretty much. The comedy more funny than not (yes it has its hits and misses); the art ranges from ok to quite good, and I like the color scheme and palette; the music really good (I heard most of it is from the game); and though I do not feel touched by the story (a bit forced or surreal to me) but it does not get on my nerve either; the character design quite appealing (and I think look better than those in the VN). I never let any thought of Clannad or KyoAni vs JC Staff etc bother me, as I never think this could lead to anything helpful in my enjoyment. Interestingly you quoted Ano Natsu as something JC Staff did decently and it is one anime that I almost dropped near the end lol (mostly for story reason but there are other factors too). I guess different people just have different standard and taste. Anyway, I do look forward to Refrain if it ever comes though. |

I mostly can't believe that people are surprised that Little Busters! BD6 sold when the first 5 volumes have average sales over 10000! They were surprised it was in a list with a threshold of just over 2000... Obviously there are 10000 people who like it enough to buy it and keep on buying it. This is the same as the people who are surprised that SAO is selling. Would 35000 people who bought it before suddenly decide not to complete their collection? @symb, I might be a little biased because Onegai Teacher is one of first romance anime I watched (or maybe first one?) and Ano Natsu is... how to say it, not remake but... spiritual heir? It's more or less done by the same people but with ten years (same day and month of 1st ep airing, just ten years difference) more experience and it shows. Anime is more subtle, doesn't have as 'forced' scenes, characters are behaving in more natural way. Visual side is simply perfect, genius directing, camera angles etc. 8thSin described it well, see http://8ths.in/ano-natsu-de-matteru-ep5-observations/ and his other posts. The main flaw of Ano Natsu is main heroine - they stepped down from exciting taboo teacher x student romance to boring senpai x kouhai. Ichika was also incredibly bland by herself despite her origins and hair color (:P) while Mizuho was very interesting character. Couple this with Kanna being much better than her counterpart from ten years ago and disappointment of viewers is to be expected (this time worst girl won instead of best one). Plot got a little silly toward the end too but that's not a problem. Ano natsu could also benefit from more conclusive ending which Onegai Teacher had. One could say that Ano Natsu is denied greatness by current times in which conclusive endings are no-go and romance should be between highschoolers only. @hpulley, ryshin used "still" so I'd assume he knows how previous vols sold and just wanted to show his surprise isn't over yet. |

I do agree that Ano Natsu is a spiritual heir to Onegai Teacher and in many aspects it does a much better job than Onegai (though Onegai seems to have got much more popularity at its time). Visually I have no complaint and the animation/sakuga (that includes the camera angles) is also handled well. That said, I have ambivalent feeling with the directing and the series composition, and then the character design is not something I feel warm to, and I definitely agree that the main flaw is the main heroine, but I would add the MC as well. Two of the most important characters in the cast get some thumb down from me (and I also feel let down by the unrequited love that keeps dragging on for the other two sub characters) is almost enough to kill my interest. But as I said, too all its own ;-) BTW, OreImo2 v1 is still creeping up and has now broken new high at #12 ~~~~~ |

In Little Busters case they just don't get that it not being Kyoani isn't going to suddenly mean next to no popularity and sales and likewise with SAO just cause a number of people are super butthurt about it and it's sister series accel world being popular doesn't mean it's suddenly not going to sell. OreImo2 v1 is now NUMBER 2 in Amazon ranking and outranks Shingeki no Kyojin v1 (which is #4). Amazing... IIRC this is the first time an anime this season climbed above SnK (not counting Railgun2 which was a re-entry under an updated format) BTW #1 is Koto no Ha no Niwa... |

With Koto no Ha no Niwa selling the BD (or a different version?) in theatres on day one and it being ripped and uploaded the same day I thought for sure sales would tank but it seems I couldn't be more wrong! Glad for it, hope the real sales reflect it. Mine is preordered, always love his work, beautifully done. |

OreImo is getting staggered solicitations on Amazon. v5 was only added on May 31... so that is probably the reason why it is ranked higher relative to earlier volumes atm. |

Don't expect it to be the last time an anime is above SnK, anyone who had read the manga could have told you that the best part of the series is the first 2-3 volumes and the numbers for SnK are going to go nowhere but downhill from now onwards. |

I kinda feel bad now for buying incest themed anime blurays than action-packed seinen adapatations... That reminds me my Yosuga no Sora blurays aren't even opened from the case and just sits here to draw away visitors haha. I wonder if I'll do the same with Oreimo series... Shingeki picked the wrong season for me. Oh well. If it was released in the autumn season I could've bundled it due to holiday bonus'. |

Something seems to be wrong with UtaPrince2 DVD v1 in Amazon. It has stopped taking orders and its ranking has dropped continuously since Friday, from 30-something to over 200 now. I wonder what happens.... BD v1 is fine though. |

The BD costs more to produce than the DVD I imagine... with both at the same RRP. So they will probably add some extra on the DVD to make up some of the difference in production costs I guess, and to make it more attractive for the female audience. |

What a huge boost Yet it has nothing to do with what the show did itself so much as circumstances surrounding its light novel ending. It just continues to depress me that getting popularity and media sales is apparently as easy as having the right cute moe girl pair up with the guy at the right time. I'd like to be able to argue that anime on average succeeds because of good storytelling and strong overall production values, but it gets harder and harder to argue that all the time. Nowadays it's all seemingly about the A-1 formula. Have a strong pre-installed fanbase for the work you are licensing and just do whatever with it and hope the source works already massive popularity can see you through to a profit. SAO, Magi and now this...... I can only call this a bad omen on the season. Thankfully it isn't always like this, but you'll find me hard pressed to claim that A-1 is doing anything I consider positive for the growth of the anime scene these days. Amazing how they went from one of the companies I was most hopeful for having a breakout period of high quality adaptations that are of interest to me to one of my most disliked companies in terms of their practices and execution in a little over a year. |

Kaioshin_Sama said: You can't because it is never really that simple. Many western fans like to obsess about story/plot or storytelling, but I have argued before that this is always just one of the many factors people consider when they consider whether to buy its discs and it may not even be the biggest factor they consider. And does it mean that they are wrong? I don't think so, because if, after factoring in all aspects of the anime, they decide that it is worth their money despite a not-so-strong story or storytelling, I don't think we are there to judge them. And it is similar for production values. Strong production values can boost attention and raise interest, but at the end we also know that just strong production values can sometimes be not enough, just like just having a bunch of cute girls or lots of moe elements can often be insufficient to make an anime an auto success. At the end there is the balance thing, and it can be elusive, which is why you may say it is 'easy' but still studios and production companies are still struggling to find the formula that can make a successful anime more like a certainty.I'd like to be able to argue that anime on average succeeds because of good storytelling and strong overall production values, but it gets harder and harder to argue that all the time. |

There's definitely a certain formula and combination of elements that seems to work better than others at any given time (right now it's a combination of idols, imouto/onii-chan relationships and hyper-competent bordering on omniscient leading characters who always seem to have things go their way), but it's definitely true that sometimes it feels more like just rolling a D20 and hoping for the best. It just seems like a lot of the time the stuff that is very successful (at least in terms of media sales) in anime happens to be stuff that I have strong personal reasons for disliking on a whole. I'd say it's about 50/50 between stuff that I have strong positive feelings for and stuff that I have strong negative feelings for so maybe there's something to be said for a correlation with anime that seem to evoke strong feelings from fans in general positive or negative and high Amazon chart positions. I'm not sure I can agree right now that it seems to be balance that's the key because it's usually the series that I find to be well-balanced that I see doing poor to average in terms of tapping the collectors market. Instead it seems to be the series that are tilted specifically towards catering to a specific fetish or idea that seem to get the most attention and ultimately make the charts. |

Kaioshin_Sama said: I just think that we should not judge anime any different from judging other popular entertainment, like pop music or movies. At the end there will be songs and movies, perhaps even the majority of them, that we think do not worth their success and then there are many of them we would think do not deserve their obscurity. If anything, I would advocate a more lenient view for the anime simply because it is from a culture that are foreign to us (thus we need to bear in mind that we may be judging it by our own cultural preference and sensibility) and because the market and size of fandom is much more restricted (Japanese anime market is smaller than its manga market which in turn is smaller than the movie or music market which in turn is much smaller than the English-speaking movie or music market or English-speaking comics market -- which means taste-wise it can be a very niche affair). It just seems like a lot of the time the stuff that is very successful (at least in terms of media sales) in anime happens to be stuff that I have strong personal reasons for disliking on a whole. Kaioshin_Sama said: "Balance" is a subjective word -- we have to bear this in mind. When I said "balance" it is "balance" from the fans' point of view. So you may think that fan service is not needed at all, or even a bad thing to have in general, fans may deem it one factor they need to include when they decide whether to buy the discs. But on the other hand, too much fan service moments would destroy the "balance" in their view, so an anime that goes too far on that direction, at the expense of say story (even though those fans may not put overly high priority to story, it does not mean they do not care about story at all -- again "balance" is in play), may end up failingl to sell.I'm not sure I can agree right now that it seems to be balance that's the key because it's usually the series that I find to be well-balanced that I see doing poor to average in terms of tapping the collectors market.
