Oh so we're in that boat, now.

Their use of the term evolution is so loose that you really can't get anything out of it other than "we are overcoming our limitations as a species", whether that is through bionic fusion or what-have-you.

They are freaking scientists.

I was using that specifically to explain the humanoid-looking squid girl as an alternative to them somehow modifying her existing body. Of course there is no evidence of that, but then there is also no evidence that they actually transformed her old body to create her.

It's not up to the audience to cover the faults of the writers.

It doesn't matter. The context is clear and obvious. There is nothing to argue about here because they are obviously referring to evolution in a general sense and not the biological "gradual change over hundreds of generations" definition.
Arguing semantics like this is a sign of a small mind. I really suggest you drop the subject.

But that's exactly what evolution means when you talk about biological change (e.g. not something like "the evolution of democracy"), even in the general sense.

Anyways, it's not the semantics here, what they are doing is simple not possible. You could, for example, create gills and graft them onto a human being if you could

a) figure out some way to not make the human body reject it
b) make it possible for the host body to repair it without tumoring out.

But you cannot change the overall big structure of an adult human being. It just doesn't work. The human genes don't code for that. One way this kinda thing would be possible, would be if you recoded the DNA, basically REGREW the whole freaking body and just transplanted the brain into the new body (and this is freaking far-fetched enough), but it's been shown that that this clearly isn't the case. You cannot alter the biological structure of an adult human organism to this degree.

doesn't sound personal to you ? and i don't think this even have to do to with my post, i was talking about having the same technology and knowledge to prove your point, the method could be by symbiotic way rather than just altering human genome(when they started with this, was way before the symbiosis experiment started), they even have some symbionts that resemble a four-footed animal, but
regardless all this, my point is, you can't prove anything just basing only in reality, like we don't have knowledge and technology to create a wormhole, we don't have knowledge and technology to create a Hideauze.

No, it was just a simple question. It'd go over most peoples head. It's not like everyone knows how microbiology works.

Let me humor you for a second, then. Technically it's possible to have a symbiotic relationship (although highly improbable). The end-result Hideauze are shown to clearly not have a human residing inside them, though, and it'd be impossible for these two organisms to merge over time with the human "self" intact without the human brain surviving (once your brain is gone, you're gone. There's no soul, etc.). And in the "evolver speech" there was clearly a human conscience in there.

And this method was never described as used in the anime itself, so it's giving it a giant benefit of doubt.

It can be outlandish, that's fine :p It can even break our knowledge of the rules of physics or whatever, as long as it clearly states that it is doing so, and doesn't pretend to work within our own framework. A huge part of why good sci-fi is good, is because it is believable.

How about this way?:

1. Suppress the immune system while changing the DNA code for 99.9%+ of the body cells. Maybe with virus/prions/other agents carried through red cells. May take a while but it could be statistically possible.

2. Restore de immune system and support it during the destruction of the unchanged cells. Perhaps with anti-cancer-like treatment.

3. Produce/insert stem cells wherever a now missing organ/limb/tissue goes until it's regrown.

4. Profit. = P

writing an episode script =/= penning an outline of the show.

Urobutcher was surely involved with the latter, while only writing two episodes of the former(first and last ep).

can anyone explain me , they turn into whalesquid to be able to adapt to environment, such as space...but then...why they need to turn into whalesquid if normal human a.k.a galactic alliance also can survive the space without being a whalesquid ?

One side had bio-enginers, the other side had physics scientists. Each one searched for an answer to vert extinction. Then politicans can in and war erupted. Then one side invented space travel through a wormwhole, but they would not share with their enemies (they are at WAR) so it is not like evolvers could say "forget out solution, theirs is simpler"

That not just that.

Alliance CAN survive in the space - but due to nature of space travel, it would take A FEW THOUSAND GENERATIONS to reach habitable planets and a lot of shit can go wrong in a tech-based ship over a century or more. Thus they rely on the warp gates to travel, but before that just like in our world the nature of our bodies and the amount of time needed for travel is what stopped them from doing so.

We are frail frail people and travelling to closest habitable star would mean an entire civilization trapping itself into a tin-can for about 200 000 years and we would most likely go all insane in the first decade due to prolonged stay away from earth in aforementioned enclosed tin can..

The squid-people idea allows to avoid energy problems, technology malfunctions, hull breaches and all of that stuff, allowing humanity to exist in space as long as there's a sun nearby.

that's the main reason behind whalesquid idea.

Oh, what a surpriiiiiise *sarcasm* that the hideauze are originally human. I've seen this division to "pure" humans and genetically modified humans one too many times in anime for it to have any impact. I was really hoping the hideauze would just be an alien race with a nice backstory but ofc they have to pull this trope. Welp, I guess they have four more episodes to make something of this thing, so far this is looking like a 5 or 6 to me.

Oh god, it was personal, i wasn't talking about biology(and it doesn't need it) , and to be evasive to my argument, you just throw "i wasn't talking about human genome lol" (like it was the most relevant part of my post) and questioning about my biology knowledge.
and you continue to talk about it ignoring what i was saying, so i don't need to repeat myself.

and to this post not be in vain, they show humans Evolvers even in the end of the video (the human interacting with the Elaine Matsumoto), or, if you want something more plausible, its a narrative tool to show the hideauze pointview.

Even so, this will be direct to my point about the line between reality and fiction.

Uh yes you were. You even brought up the human genome. If you want to talk about if biological shit is plausible or not you need knowledge about the subject. Does this ring a bell?: "Yes, like if you have the SAME technology and knowledge of a obvious more advanced human race that broken ethics and morals to reach the result, to prove that we can't manipulate human genome to this level."

No idea what you're trying to say, or what point you're trying to make, now, but I never said that there weren't any human "evolvers" around.

Anyways, there seems to be some serious communication problems here, so I'll just stop here.

Uh, no. Bill Gates never said it would never be possible to go past 1024 kb RAM, and that'd be the only way that comparison would hold any kind of water.

Him saying that there would be no need for more than 1024KB implies that he thought technology wouldn't reach a point where that amount was necessary. And he worked on the field. Computer science history is full of quotes like this.

Do you think Alan Turing believed that people would be arguing through small boxes about fictional squids while sitting in their homes in different corners of the Earth, basically in real time, few years later?

How many people thought Julio Verne's inventions would once become reality, back then?

Just because you work on a field doesn't mean you know exactly what's gonna be possible a gazillion years from now. Just because you don't work on a field doesn't mean that you can't guess what's gonna be possible either.

I'm pretty sure most scientists get surprised quite often by new discoveries and researches. Isn't that what science is all about? Discovering new things? Breaking old beliefs? Showing new ways?

I'm not disagreeing with you (well, except for the one thing I'll bring up in the next sentence), I'm just saying that comparison is downright wrong. No, stating that it "won't be a need for" does not equal "it's impossible to do". There's a difference between thinking something is unlikely to be pursued, and having enough research done to be as sure as you can be within the confines of science that something won't work even if it is (I was actually talking about this with one of my mates who have a microbiology degree a few hours ago. We were pretty much in agreement on this issue :p).

I'll be the first to adjust my knowledge as soon as a credible discovery would prove otherwise, but I'm pretty darn sure that won't happen in this case.

As you're being kinda reasonable: One of my favorite "science stories" is the one Dawkins told of his undergraduate study, when a visiting researcher disproved a hypothesis of a professor, who accepted the outcome with "My dear fellow, I wish to thank you, I have been wrong these fifteen years.", tears running down his face.

I did not actually see this twist coming. It was surprising and does add another layer to the ideas presented in Gargantia, and the show has four more episodes to expand upon this new layer while closing out its story.

This episode kinda solidifies what Gargantia is to me: a collection of ideas that most certainly aren't new, but executing them in a way that makes them feel fresh while offering their own new insight into how the world functions, how a community thrives, and peoples' morals. It's a very well-written show, and I must say that I'm in love with it.

How about you read this article. Like you truly believe he would accept he said in the past something so foolish when nobody actually keeps an audiotape of him saying it, it is obvious he would deny it (who wouldn't?), but back then everybody that was into computers really thought that 1mb was a HUGE amount of RAM. No different how XartaX believes that the limitations in genetic manipulation in 2013 are so HUGE to even consider for a second that what we are being told in this chapter 9 of this anime could be real. I think that line of thought to be snobbish, if this was a show happening in today’s earth (or the very near future) I would understand nitpicking about bad science.

Shyamalan wish he could of wrote this shit. But seriously, that was a great episode. Ever since they showed us the whale-squid, I figured that it was an ancestor to the Hideauze. I thought for the longest time that maybe Ledo was sent back into the past via the worm hole. And after episode 8 when Chamber had said it would take over 6500 years for the message to reach the Alliance, I figured I was spot on. But, this whole evolution of the Evolvers is amazing and something I did not see coming.
So now I'm wondering just how long has this war between the Hideauze (Evolvers) and the Galactic Alliance (Continental Union) been going on for? From what I remember, Amy had said that there use to be "land", but she didn't know what that was. I'm sure that the more elderly citizens of Gargantia probably remember what land was or at least had heard tales about it from their elders. Also, If I remember correctly, Ledo said that Earth was thought to be frozen (like in the video records he found), but now it's all melted. How long could that have taken?
I'm also still not sure what time Ledo is in. Did he go back to the past through the wormhole? Which would mean he is in a moment of time a couple hundred years or more after the "Evolver-Continental Union War" began instead of when he was in his time, which I think could be thousands of years later. This episode just sparked a lot of curiosity in me and I'm sure in a lot of others. My favorite episode by far. If someone wants to comment or expand on my ramblings, feel free.

Lolyeah, I'm pretty sure you haven't even read that article you linked.

At least you won't cite it again as '1024kb'.

Anyway, thx for introducing an interesting homepage.

It's actually pretty funny that his own "evidence" concluding with him being wrong aptly describes most MAL posts in a metaphorical way.

Wow, some of the replies in this thread are downright despicable.

So if we actually made contact with an extraterrestrial species, it seems like there's a sizable minority of humanity that would immediately want to go to war with them just because they're not human. Disgusting!
Exactly. The closet-racism in this thread is disgusting.

Someone even tried to JUSTIFY genocide with "hey they look more like an animal so its okay~". Then again that's nothing new as people tried to justify getting rid of hideauze even before the twist with bullshit like "oh they have capabilities to be smart, that means they must DIE". *sigh* MAL is full of radical republicans, it seems
LOL

When you see people spraying down mosquitoes to prevent West Nile disease and malaria, you scream, "Damn rascists!!! How dare they justify genocide just because they're animals!"

Okay...crazy-people thread. Wut.

Anyway, THAT WAS INTENSE! I was really bored by the first half of the episode and even started playing tetris in another window. But then they started playing those old news reels(?) and I was like "WAIT WHAT." The show got my full attention!

I'm a sucker for dark twists and I'm now craving episode 10 +u+

How long could that have taken?

ehhhh he didnt exactly go back in time in a way, its just that hes so far away it would take the message that long to reach the alliance

Do you even understand what i was saying ? there is diference to just reference the citation about human genome and discussing about human genome, i wasn't discussing about human genome, i was discussing about judging fiction with reality knowledge, i said that i won't repeat myself, so, i rest my case.

So do they start out looking vaguely humanoid and then grow into horrifying rave squids? Or are there some human looking ones and some ugly ones? When they're born is it a toss up between inheriting Mommy's lips or Daddy's gaping cephalopodic maw? Where do they stop being human and start being Energizer mollusks?
I'm just having trouble seeing many similarities between Momma squid and the cute one at the end; how do they get from the latter to the former? While they both glow and have tentacles, they still look like entirely different lifeforms [that've been mainlined Neon and radioactive waste].

Also, were they meant to be able to shed their exteriors post space travel like an organic space suit or was it an oversight to not include opposable thumbs? They lay eggs, which means that their gestation and birthing methods are now fundamentally different from humans, so it seems like it was meant to be a permanent lifestyle choice.

Before anyone says it, yes I payed attention to the plot tweest and understand the implications, but this is really bothering me.

I'm thinking the whalesquids look more human because they de-evolved back towards their original forms, or it's just the young that are human-sized and cute. Once they grow up they turn into the giant, Hideauze forms, probably growing to planetary size in the vacuum of space.

Did not see that revelation coming! I have to admit as soon as he saw the babies that I suspected they were evolved humans, and as soon as they mentioned 'Evolvers' I knew that the 'Hideauze' were humans who'd evolved themselves to survive in deep space. Now Ledo's going to have to figure out what to do with this information. Figure out a way to get to and repair that wormhole gate, or decide to leave humanity to its endless space war and settle down on Earth. I wish there were more episodes, it makes me sad there's only 3 left, but if they play this right this has the potential to be truly epic.

I thought this episode was great. I use to think that ledo was thrown into the past but now I think he's still in present time it's just that the Continental Union is that far away from earth now. Also if you asked me I think there's 3 types of Hideauze. One type is the human Hideauze that look like humans in suits then there's the type that chamber killed that are hybrids of humans and last but not least is the fighting Hideauze with the big jaws that I believe were made and bred to fight for and protect the the hybrid and human Hideauze.

Such an intense episode! So pumped right now. This anime is blowing everything out of the water this season.

Will write more later, just had to get that out of my system.

When Chamber killed the Hideauze child I screamed "No!" with Ledo. And that flute at the end... holy crap!
Let's go bowling.

Did you completely miss the fact that he didn't actually transform into a space squid, but rather used the squid body as a vessel and eventually (somehow) merged with it, thus gaining its ability to survive in a vacuum?

Though that doesn't explain the girl, it would be nice if you would at least pay attention to what's in the show before complaining about its plausibility.

He clearly states "human genome experiments" during the interview, which means they are doing all this shit through altering a human being. Heck, a woman in the video later even straight out says "by evolving the human body itself, we can adapt to the vacuum of space" (I could go on about how calling what they're doing evolution a blatant misuse of the term, as well).

And not that it matters one twit, but exactly where is it stated that he wore it as a vessel?

They mention very clearly it's a symbiotic relationship between the squid and human. BTW I work with GMO's every day in the lab and yes while this is is clearly impossible with current technologies there is a hell of a lot we do not understand with genetics and we are still in very early stages with gene therapy.

Oh yeah and as to the misuse of the word evolution, well I admit that the way the general press uses it pisses me off and it usually is used incorrectly. We are certainly not talking about darwinean evolution here! However, the term 'evolvers' seems to be a derogatory term applied by the humans.

Edit:

One final comment, It is very likely that the symbiont has had human genes incorporated to avoid rejection, so that is the starting point for your "human genome experiments". :)
