I love sushi, aslong as it's not vegetarian, because that stuff is horrible. other than the fish though, i'm not really into japanese food. i prefer korean to japanese noodles and thai to japanese curry. edit: talking about wasabi.. has anyone everplayed the game with four candy balls, where one is filled with wasabi? So everyone eats one.. and one turns out to be.. not so lucky? :P |

I love eating sushi, and I thought I replied to this thread and answered the poll, but I guess I didn't. I love trying out different kinds of sushi, but I'll eat the plain ones like the California rolls. Sushi is awesome and I wish I could eat it at least once every week :D |

Firstly, would a whale penis fit in a sushi..? secondly, i don't believe whales mate through that particular type of intercourse, meaning they wouldn't have a penis, although i'm no expert on it (actually it's just an educated guess : P) also, Japanese don't eat animal penii. for that you should go to China, they have specialized restaurants there which are said to improve male..hormonal..functions? Lastly, whales are a rare delicacy in Japan, so if whale was actually used, it would only be in top of the line restaurants, meaning that anything they make would probably taste good anyway XD |

I've had sashimi since I was young 'cause of my mom's side of the family. I always liked it mostly because of the texture and the soy sauce with it. Half Chinese, half Japanese here. |

I started eating sushi long before I was obsessed with anime@@; but I can see the comparison and it makes me sad (that anime lovers can have a more natural affinity towards it >.>). As a sushi restaurant is my favorite restaurant - I hate letting friends know who don't like sushi~ don't want to have to take them there then waste their money since they may pretend they don't like it. |

Personally, I like eating sushi. Each fish tastes different, each roll tastes different and each restaurant makes sushi differently. Sometimes yes, sushi doesn't taste too great, but most of the time (if it's made correctly) it tastes awesome. The combination of sushi and soy sauce is just awesome. Rikuna said: As a sushi restaurant is my favorite restaurant - I hate letting friends know who don't like sushi~ don't want to have to take them there then waste their money since they may pretend they don't like it. I agree with you on that comment Rikuna. If I'm gonna take friends to a sushi restaurant, I want them to appreciate what their eating rather than just saying "What is this?" |

I don't like sushi neither raw food. But after I have tried Japanese food from a restaurant over here, I grew to like their food. It wasn't uncooked though, it was dumplings and other hot dishes. |

Ate salmon sashimi again today. Still unremarkable and am not getting the hype. Although I realised today that I actually havent eaten sushi, I'm always eating the raw stuff by itself. Maybe rice would spark things up a bit somewhat? |

Sushi is amazing. Whoever said it has no flavor is either retarded or they went to a sushi bar owned by koreans. But in general, most anime fans think japan is the land of milk and honey and that all things japan are cool, hence the correlation. |

Yakitori, yakiniku, nabe, donburi, ramen, anything hot! Always better than cold food in my usually starving opinion. Is raw fish meant to be really good for you though? I'd like to think my body benefited even if my taste buds didnt. EDIT: Is there a thread about Japanese cuisine? We could go on and on about different food from the country. |

I've eaten everything you mentioned above and then some. It's all delicious, if prepared well, with fresh ingredients. But sushi is excellent too. I can't explain the exact reason why it tastes so much better and more delicious than simply sashimi, but it does. Whether it be the smaller but thicker piece of fish, the sauce, the rice, whatever. It's a million times superior. Cihan said: EDIT: Is there a thread about Japanese cuisine? We could go on and on about different food from the country. Go ahead and start one. I've eaten a fair amount of Japanese cuisine, and have gone to some very different types of places, from sushi places to primarily cooked food to Shabu-Shabu, but I'm definitely missing out on a lot of dishes. |

Sure, you can like Japan, but I don't understand the obsession with a place that most people here have never been and don't actually know all that much about. Anyway, this is what I was getting at with this topic. I mean, how many threads here in the GD contain the word Japan in them? 3 or 4/5? Why is everything about Japan simply because this is an anime forum? Do people realize that the Japan they know and love is not a real place in the sense that they imagine it? It just doesn't make sense to me. I don't actually care one way or the other, but I find it so bizarre, especially in the fact that people act like it's completely normal. I personally speak and understand Japanese to at least an upper intermediate level, that's because I had to learn a second language and anime assisted that. I don't eat pocky or drink lots of green tea (Except the stuff a Japanese friend bought me as a souvenir, don't want to waste it), I've never tried sake and find sushi to be somewhere in the middle of the list of foods taste-wise, I don't listen to Jpop or lots of Anime OSTs, and so forth. Why do people do these things? Do they seriously believe that Japan in the real world is what they imagine it to be? *Shrug*, I'm just baffled by it. |

Actually, because I have the ability of logic, I can infer that a Canadian whose favorite food is sushi, and who just happens to like his sushi with Sake, is learning about "Japanese culture" (Agh, I sort of want to gouge my eyes out every time I hear that by now, because it doesn't actually mean anything in its typical use) and the language in order to watch anime raw, I can put the dots together. And it's not about that specific example, I'm just saying it in regards to the mentality in general. But I do know how to be an asshole, I'll accept that (Although it's not like I'm making accusations, again simply stating I don't understand it). |

I'm surprised with your attitude towards non-Japanese taking part in Japanese culture that you have the drive to learn Japanese. My, my, aren't we lashing out today. I would propose that it makes no sense to like anything due to an inherent property such as where it originated. If it's interesting, it is interesting. I'm inferring that people express interest in things they would not be interested in were it not related to Japan. When did I say that culture was all about language? What are you responding to there? And I'd be thoroughly surprised if you found me someone who was both an anime fan and had an interest in "Japanese culture" and had also attained proficiency or fluency in Japanese. Those kind of people never last when the scale of the mountain of memorization needed to learn a language becomes understood. I think the kind of way these people tend to be interested in Japanese culture is more of a novelty than a real desire for understanding of something, and I think that's evident in that they don't actually tend to study Japanese culture on their own in any real scale. I feel the same way about Japanese people who are obsessed with America and assume all white looking gaijin are American and try to date them simply because they're gaijin and so forth. It doesn't apply only to the Japanophilia. The reason I can continue in studying and learning Japanese is precisely because I accept Japan as an imperfect place that has plenty of things I like, and a lot of things I don't like. I don't put Japanese people on a pedestal and don't want them to do that to me either, I simply want to know more about things in general, on the language front, Japanese is where I happened to start. |

kasumisama said: That must be some shitty "college" then. You try teaching a large group of students ~5-10,000 words and 3,000 kanji and their readings and meanings and compounds and see how that goes. It's just like how people take 4 years of Spanish or French in high school and can't speak more than one or two sentences by the end of it. (Of course, also to consider is the fact that learning a completely foreign language, especially one with a writing system like Japanese has, is much more difficult than learning a language sharing the same roots.) Of course, the problem doesn't get any better based on the fact that they focus so heavily on grammar when if you learn the language the right way, most of that grammar just seems natural, in the same way that we don't actually learn much grammar in our native languages until we've been speaking them for 5+ years. ukonkivi said: I need to just get out of the thread. And really, I don't understand why everything has to be illogical just because you (You not being specific to you as in ukonkivi) disagree with it. I know that in life you are the protagonist, but the world has no protagonist and nobody is right all the time, it's ok to be wrong or say something illogical here and there. You are not omniscient and therefore you do not hold superior logic to all people you disagree with. |

It's just like how people take 4 years of Spanish or French in high school and can't speak more than one or two sentences by the end of it. You'd have to be really stupid. Seriously. Okay, I understand how you can take Spanish I in HS and then get out and only remember like a word or two, despite the fact that you did very well, grade-wise. (It happened to me.) But on the other hand...for you to go through Spanish or French I, then II, then III, AND IV? Year after year after year (after year..) of drilling it into your head (we're still assuming this person absolutely excelled) for you not to speak it fluently? Yeah....something's wrong with that picture. On the other hand I can totally understand going to Japan and then being kind of taken off guard at first since, as with any country, there's a whole lot of slang and you'd have to get used to it. But to pass four years of JP, and all (or most) of the JLPT and still know nothing? The odds of that seem a bit low. You should probably do that. I don't know why this would be so annoying, it's not like I'm running after you specifically with a torch in hand, I'm just trying to understand the obsession. Okay, I don't get them either. Really I don't. These people who like anything Japanese simply because its Japanese. Its a mystery. I mean, I'm a huge (HUGE) fan of Japanese anime, manga, video games (even their pr0n is, if not hawt, at least entertaining), but I'm smart enough to know Japan's not like what you see in their entertainment, and I'm not going to try some food I would otherwise normally run from because its Japanese. ....All that said? I don't get the "self-hating otaku" types either. The ones who go out of their way to show how different they are from the kind of people I mentioned above because they don't want normal people to think they're not "cool" or something. The ones who look down on people just because they're not as critical of anime or get fanatical about every series they watch. There's a lot of that on this forum (in anime fandom in general, really), and its kinda laughable. C'mon...we all really like anime here. This is a bit of an undeniable fact. You're on a site that's sole purpose is keeping track of how much anime you watch--if you're just an occasional fan who only watches a series here and there when the mood strikes you, then, well...you have a different problem. (Why are you obsessed with wasting your time, basically.) No offense hikky, but you kinda came off like one of those types when you made this thread...if you're not then I apologize but most of the time I was reading this thread that was the thought that went through my head. |
