This is to explain about what happened recently involving members of the cast of Kokoro Connect. Basically what happened was employees of Silver Link (the studio that does Kokoro Connect) and some cast members have been linked to a prank where they created a fake audition for a small supporting role on Kokoro Connect. What happened is they gave the role to newbie VA, who was then told that the whole thing was a fake and was given a job as a PR person as compensation. As a result, there has been a large uproar pretty much ruining any chance for Kokoro Connect to succeed. There have talks to boycott the show and even chances that it will stop airing. As of now, the cast members linked to it are Takuma Terashima (Aoki), Hisako Kanemoto (Yui), and Takahiro Mizushima (Taichi). To sum it up, their careers are fucked.

here is another summary of what happened with a link to ustream. you can watch the recording of the live there (but of course only in japanese):
http://mousoupica.tumblr.com/post/30533553898/silver-links-prank

i like ther anime so far pretty much, but i don't think i will continue watching it and i won't buy any merchandise. they just can't do something like this and expect everyone to laugh about it. what they did to the poor guy was just mean and eventhough i'd really like to know the rest of the story i prefer that they drop the anime, otherwise they will never learn that they can't do whatever they want and get away with it

Yeah I saw that yesterday on Tumblr but I didn't really understand the situation. Now I do. :( Poor guy. Stupid Silver Link.

I'm not dropping this show though. I may dislike the company and the VAs involved, but I still enjoy Kokoro Connect.

I don't know why this is just getting out if it was two months ago, but I have to say that they pretty much messed Koroko Connect up. People are are angry at the author and illustrator of the orginal books just because they made Koroko Connect now, and they didn't even do anything.

Everyone hates those two voice actors now ( sources are now telling me that Takuma Terashima wasn't really involved)and are probably going to hate every anime they stared in. Silver Link is going to forever be frowned upon because of this.

I hope that Hisako Kanemoto and Takahiro Mizushima personally apologize to that boy.

Even though this was a cruel prank, this is being blown way out of proportion.

Sales will probably lessen a bit, but there definitely isn't a chance this will stop airing.

Yes he's appeared in many anime, but look at his roles. They've all been shit roles with barely any lines. He is a B-level seiyuu. There's no doubt about that.

Well they pulled a pretty bad joke. And I read somewhere that public humiliation is PRETTY SERIOUS and people suicide over that. And lots of people are boycotting it. It might definitely be true. Would you want to support a company that allows these kinds of things to happen?

More about how it came to light:

Momoi Haruka tweeted that she's really happy that people karaoke her songs and it's been a dream of hers.
Eufonius member Kikuchi responds with しょうもない (lame/stupid)
Momoi responds that she is serious and it's too bad Kikuchi took it the wrong way.
Kikuchi responds with "I am too~"

This understandably enrages people, so they start digging through Kikuchi's other tweets.

They find a tweet where he shits on "people" who work for little pay and are satisfied with that just to be in the industry. He says that they're the easiest to use and there's no way they'd ever hire them for real. He's talking about Ichiki here.

People go apeshit, and here we are.

Also, Ichiki was on Sugita's radio show recently and he was asked about it there, and Sugita got very upset when he learned it wasn't a joke. So it got some exposure there too.

Ratings and pre-orders are plummeting fast. At this rate it'll be the Fractale of the season.

From Japan.

There's a lot of misconceptions about various individuals involved.

For one, the victim of the "prank" (which was officially held by the staff and part of the cast as a side-entertainment for the Kokoro Connect pre-airing, not just some random unplanned off-the-top-of-the-head deal) is not exactly a newbie.
http://myanimelist.net/people/1527/Mitsuhiro_Ichiki
He is experienced in this sort of stuff, and according to his other talks in other projects, many VAs are accustomed to this sort of joke-like penalty game (at least behind the scenes). However, this one just happened to take things to an extreme he had never faced before, in the face of the public audience.

For two, because this was intended as a source of entertainment for the audience attending the pre-airing, many of the staff members including the cast may be laughing off the whole thing on the surface (as most Japanese are inclined to do, wiki honne and tatemae for more details), and so their responses in various publicized occasions are not exactly accurate in delineating their stance on the situation. VAs like Tomokazu Sugita (Kyon, Gintoki etc.) have openly shown disappointment in public, but Japanese people in general would not follow suit. Internet makes things easier for Japanese people certainly, but 2ch residents wouldn't have any guts to do anything about something like that in reality. They're boycotting the BDs, because that's just about all they're capable of doing, and also because many are "enjoying the party", costless as it is to boycott so-to-speak. 2ch residents wouldn't try to think about doing anything else.

However, all in all, it is safe to say that this was one of the worst ideas an animation production staff could ever think of. It has caused problems for all viewers, the cast and staff involved, several uninvolved VAs and especially the original author. Just don't forget though, this has nothing to do with the quality of the anime, at least up to the latest episode before the incident had its fuse lit, and certainly not the light novel series.

Yes I understand what you are saying however, I do not personally think that what the people do should affect the anime. Don't get me wrong I believe that it is wrong what they did. It is really terrible, and if it was me I would cry.

However, the series itself did not do this, just the people behind it. Therefore, boycotting the series, does not really make the problem better. I mean there are still voice actors in the series that might like some positive attention, even the author, who's series is now on the line because someone was a massive jerk.

I feel like there has to be a better way to get across, then to hurt the series as a whole. Just my two cents.

I whole-heartedly agree. 2ch residents are just using this incident as fuel to party up their poor lives. These boycotters are no different from the jerks who pulled off this prank.

In other words, if they really cared for the well-being of the anime, they would most certainly not take this form of action. It's worse than not doing anything at all. If you can't pick out the actual perpetrators and punish them only, the next best option is to simply put the fire out as fast as possible for the sake of the series. I mean it's the same as a real fire. You usually put the fire out before worrying about who caused it, because you want to save as many lives as possible. Justification and punishment are secondary. What these boycotters are essentially doing is letting the house burn down on not just the fire-starters, but everyone else left in the building as well.

Of course, intentionally advertising a boycott movement is different from having your will to buy the BDs stripped because of this incident. BDs are super expensive in Japan after all, and you can't help but feel a distance after something like this.

As jmal said most people boycotting the bds were going to buy it in the first place. People are getting on their high horses and overreacting.

Does this "scandal" impact the quality of the story in any way?
Does it affect the content of the visual novels it was based on?

Adorable...
the bad: that other people involwed in the series will suffer from actions of few morons.

the good: that maybe reaction from public (I hope it's louder in Japan) will free us from those people for some time... and few months with bit lower income would teach not to make unfunny jokes. It's educational aspect for them. Of course it's idealistic assumption that such reaction would be but it's for their own good.

I'm sure they'll get paid anyway. The important thing is what happens afterwards

You see, if nothing sells the company will try to find out why. Now if they see that it's because of the prank and more precisely because of the people that were involved, they will be fired to send a message to the fans

Not only they should get fired, but other studios will not accept the guys involved in the fear that they will suffer from bad sales too.

And that's an appropriate punishment :)

After checking their VA record it won't be big loss for industry :3 (nice to see btw that for some reason Miyuki Sawashiro and Aki Toyosaki weren't part of this... those two would be missed).

Plus they really should fire person that came up with the idea, if it's one working in the studio (or send to some school to learn how marketing works they could use it).

Because people who buy that show actually support that kind of people? As long as you don't pay them it's okay I guess.

Pulling this prank offscreen would be terrible, but onscreen with an audience? I hope that guy doesn't commit suicide or something. They should really fire all staff behind that.

To be honest, I really hated the VAs and the staff for doing such a horrible prank. Poor guy. What made it worse is that they laughed about it at the expense of his despair.

On another note, I really wish it doesn't affect the quality of the anime. Anything about this controversy can be settled after the show, but not during the show. To me, this anime is one of my favorites, but if sales keep plummeting due to contempt and hate, it might really take a bad turn. The VA and staff can be fired or hated however much everyone likes, but at least let them finish this anime first. People who are boycotting don't realize that they are harming the future of the people who really like the anime, even if their staff are terrible bastards.
