Nice first episode, my expectations are very high and I hope they won't ruin this show.
31 pages? 8,68 rating? First episode was certainly awesome, but I wonder if they can keep up.
I almost never read discussions after I made my post, if you want to reply PM me or post on my profile page.

So Aria on the Starless Skies will only get 1 episode. It's ok I guess since we do get more time for an ALO arc. :P

Question 1: What is Aria on the Starless Skies?
Question 2: How in the world did you figure that much out from a 30-second preview?!

OH! I knew I had just heard Kirito's voice somewhere REALLY recently- the guy who voiced him also voiced Narumi in KamiMemo. I love it when the main character gets a great voice actor who doesn't make 'em sound like a whiny kid.

Thank you, annoying fanboys. You have made me realize how obnoxious I was when majutsu no index came out.

That learned, I'll definitely stay clear of this forum or I'll end up hating a perfectly fine series.

Side note I just did some research on redirecting brain signals and, it is something that has been done before so if you can redirect brain signals to a fake arm. Having those signals inputted into a computer then, used as values in a game and, displayed on a monitor in a first person view is theoretically possible. However the technology and, training required to doing that would be enormous and, as such you would be able to make one if founded properly but, having it as a every day item or something you can find locally is a very low possibility

Never mind the military use for such technology... It most likely already exists and, is being kept on the down low for obvious reasons

John Carmack... You know that really famous (Former NASA rocket scientist) and co-founder of id Software is developing a virtual reality headset in his spare time. It has sensors in it to simulate all head movements and displays them in game. Youtube some videos of John Carmack E3 2012 he was there showing off his homemade vr headset. Obviously its far from using brain waves as an input, but its something.

Believe it or that is actually farely basic to do. You can use Motion Capture technology to do that. Even Kinect for 360 is capable of doing that. It's basically the same thing. However unless you have a omni directional treadmill and a lot of free space you'll be standing still :P

I've been waiting to watch Sword Art Online for months now and my goodness the first episode was so DAMN GOOD! Omfg, I fucking love it!

The animation/visuals were superb. The background looks so good and the 'in-game interfaces' look great. Loving the character designs and I really liked the mirror part when everyone's avatars changed to their real bodies and faces lmao. That was hilarious, especially with guys wearing female outfits! xD

Kirito looks like an awesome protagonist. Him teaching Klein how to charge up an attack and follow through was entertaining and I loved that sound effect too. OST was very fitting and really set the mood. SAO has so many MMORPG elements and having played quite a lot of MMORPG in the past I love seeing those elements in an anime.

The OP is sooo damn good, sung by LiSA. <3 Need to get the full version ASAP. xD
Overall SAO episode 1 lived up to my expectations. This is probably the best Anime of the Summer 2012 season for me so far. Hopefully we'll see Asuna next episode.

People shouldn't discuss that stuff here in the first place, remember the obligatory legend on all episode discussions:

THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.

I won't say I have never done this, I sometimes get caught up with how a discussion is going. It still doesn't mean it's OK to do so, and I won't be getting mad if I too get a reminder whenever I forget.

Anyway, it's perfectly fine to create other threads to discuss the novel, it's just here where people ought to be more careful.

OK, over and out, I really shouldn't be lingering here like I first said, as I don't think this will convince everyone.

I really hope this anime does well, I'm kinda intrigued by the whole online game theme.
when the chraacters first realised they couldn't log out I was slightly disappointed - thinking it might just play out like .hack//sign did (which I love, but they've spun out lesser stories from that 3 times now).

The "stuck in the game" thing seems interesting, it's probably been done before, but I haven't seen any other anime doing this thang.

loved the obscure art scenes that seem to be more frequent with video game anime - especially when the sun was setting before the GM appeared.

No one is discussing the manga they are discussing the light novel and, anything that is considered spoilers is in the spoiler bbcode don't click it don't read it

I'm pretty sure .hack//sign was the only one that had the stuck in a video game oh and, yu gi oh when kiba makes his virtual reality thing he gets stuck in it. Other then, that I don't think i've seen it before

Right, clearly you're a moron if you don't understand that the template warning is meant for the source, whether it is a manga, novel, light novel, game or a freaking alien dissertation.

Also FYI , I haven't clicked on any spoiler. There are still some unmarked spoilers, which so far don't spoil too much, yet. But the point is, this is the thread for episode 1, not an extension of a novel thread, and certainly not a place for you to brag about reading the novels, no one cares if you did.

Except for the small one on the top right lololol
The only thing that girl did was make her avatar go from pig tails to just long hair.

Must've been a WHOLE bunch of awkward moments just like with the guy in pink and fat dude. lololol

There's 4 girls out of 18, making 14 guys...
The two on the top right and one on near the bottom right, and the one above it (curly hair). About 80% of the girls selected were guys.

Hmm...After I saw the anime, I immediately went to read the 1st 4 books of the light novel. Pretty much just waiting for Asuna to show up now, which *should* be next episode unless they decide to do the series in order of clearing the floors, at which point, Asuna doesn't show up for quite a while :(

Been following SAO Anime Adaptation for while now and the first episode sure did met my expectation , probably better than the first episode of Accel World imho.

Also I lol'd at the 10+ reviews already in place and ranking for this episode. XD

5/5, Well done.

Come to think of it, how the fuck does being a different person in the game work? Never-mind being a person of the opposite gender. Obviously they don't need scientific validity, but it would be fun to hear an explanation.

I mean every persons nerves are slightly different, so it would be impossible (I believe) for your nerve sensors to control a body that isn't an exact replica of your actual one. If it was it would take a massive amount of working in time, something like with the newer fancier prosthetic limbs, but on a larger scale. Then your nerves would be adjusted to your in-game body, meaning they'd have to re-adjust back to reality every time, which would not work/mess you up. Haha.

At least, I believe that makes sense. I'm no bio student.

It does, but many things in Anime don't have sense. It's better not to question, it should work in a Sci-Fi environment, or Fantasy... I mean, we didn't really get much into this technology or at all, I'm too lazy to Google too at the moment.

So I suppose we can invent anything about it...

It's kinda explained how the creator deliberately did the whole "Gender Lock" thing due to the psychological effects of not having...certain equipment in the Pre-Alpha stages.

Actually it would work lol and, your mention about prosthetic limbs has already been done however the big issue is since that area of science is very under funded it would take them twice as long to do things. The was NerveGear works is by turning the electric signals your brain sends out to move limbs to the computer then, that computer reads them as values and, those values control the game as normal coding.

The actual signals sent to the nerves are basically the same however your are right in moving a fake limb takes a large amount of mental power ( so to say ) depending on the person they can go anywhere from months to years to learning how to simply move fingers never mind your whole body. It puts stain on your mind when your doing it however if something like nervegear got released it would be hard for people at first but, over time the ability to move would become more natural and, would be something everyone can do.

NerveGear technology isn't actually that advanced and, could be done today right now if someone would give the proper founding in order to research it

If I have learned anything at all from Ghost in the Shell, it's that the issue with getting these kinds of technologies developed is more or less due to the moral issues surrounding them and, of course, the funding.

I use Ghost in the Shell as an example because the creators went to insane lengths to show how technology of the not-too-distant future would affect politics, the economy, and even the basics of human interaction.

They also went to great lengths to show how it would work.

The tech is there, or rather the possibility is there, but technology usually advances (in leaps and bounds) for one of three major reasons-

A) viability for military use
B) MASSIVE funding from private organizations or a government, often times for political use
C) demand from the public (which usually just means developing an already existing technology further)

Example- Without NASA, we wouldn't have many of the things we have today, including microwaves.
Even a lot of smaller advances in technology came about due to the Cold War and the space race.

So, I'm sure we'll have this stuff as soon as, I dunno, Bill Gates loses an arm or leg and suddenly decides he wants to go full-prosthetic and devotes billions of dollars to making it happen.

....Actually, that seems pretty easy.
Who wants to further the cause of science? Anyone?

I'm an engineer. I deal with futuristic technology (in fact one of the key tech that would make Accel World possible). Imho, NervGear is pretty advanced. The current public research area on neural prosthestics still has a long way to go. Not to mention NervGear can actually simulate full body functions, including sexual impulses.

I know my example has already been done, that's why I used it. It takes months-years to be able to properly control a single new limb, so how can people possible jump right into an entirely new body. You'd just like, fall over and twitch.

The senses and, sexual impulses stuff like that I mentioned in a previous post and, on that I really can't think of ways you could separate and, simulate them. NerveGear Technology already exists it's under founded and, under researched. It's advanced yes I probably should have said it's not that futuristic or far off from current day technology. There are obvious obstacles to deal with like how the electric signals sent to your nerves aren't very strong which can cause obvious problems a lot of researchers who are looking into it are either connecting cords to their nerves for direct connect to read the impulses or actually have surgery for chip to be put in their head. Of course there is technology that lets you read the signals without a chip or cord. The technology required to make nervegear a reality is in it's infancy and, will most likely stay that way until someone can put real effort with equal funding.

Neural prosthetics are more advanced then the technology for nerve gear. With neural prosthetics you already accomplish nerve gear but, take it to the next level. for nervegear you would only need to grab the signals and, put them onto a computer and, it stops there for neural prosthetics you need to grab the signals send them to a computer then, create hardware for the hand to move on response. where as in nervegears case you would only need the information on the computer and, from there you program the computer to recognize signals and, then plug them into game movements.

At the moment that's the closest to "virtual reality" that I can think we can get to. The senses and, actually "feeling" like your in another world is beyond any knowledge I have. You would have to upload your conciseness to a computer to simulate that and, I have no idea how you would go about doing that lol and, from a moral standpoint I doubt the technology would be allowed do to the high levels of danger. Uploading your conciseness to a computer means leaving your body which would also result in the possibility of you being lost forever nevermind the fact that the only way to actually know if the device is capably of uploading yourself back to the device without human testing

I've heard rumors about that type of technology but, I doubt it would be allowed public

that's basically it lol

however I can't actually say for sure if what I mentioned can be 100% accurate on the area of moving your "in game character" the thing with moving a prosthetic limb connect to your nerves is simply that you no longer have the real hand some things may be different. I would be interested in seeing the difference between the results of someone who has the limb and, someone who doesn't that very factor could change the usage of "NerveGear" all together.

And, don't worry within the next 10 years I'll make a working device. Virtual Reality or Game simulation is on my to-do list.

I already know about phantom limbs but, there are so many different variables such as

How well will it work if you have a arm and, can move it without the machine?

How well will it work if you have a arm and, can't move it without the machine?

How well will it work if you don't have arm? (Already been tested)

They are in the same area regardless of which the effects will be the same "NerveGear" will function in the same way as prosthetic limbs I talked about the difference between the two in a post above #655 is the one so you can refer to that if you want to see the difference.

I don't really get it.
From how I understand this sentence, this is the natural situation. You can move your arm without any help from a machine. Or do you mean something else?

w well will it work if you have a arm and, can't move it without the machine?

Is this then the situation where you have a paralysed arm or something and you can only move it with the help of a machine (exoskeleton)?

It's to test the differences in responses for all I know if I connected to a neural prosthetic and, some how managed to stop signals being sent to my arm while connected to the machine it could be easy and, completely natural for me to move the neural prosthetic. However the results may vary depending on the condition of your arm. It's simply to test.

I'm assuming you read the previous post and, the way nervegear and, neural prosthetic work is like this

Brain sends signals > Computers get signals > signals are converted to values |
for NerveGear | > imputes those values as the game controller ( for moving and, etc. )
for neural prosthetic | > uses those values to move a hardware machenical arm ( which is a lot harder )

The reason why we would want to test the different results is because moving a prosthetic limb with just the signals sent form your brain is "said to be hard" from testers ( obviously varies by person to person ) however it could also vary by the condition of your arm or all around body.

Sorry I know it's hard to explain and, even harder over a forum if you want to message me live then, add me on skype : midnightpride

I also don't mind others if they want to add me
