Great start that leaves me with more questions about the first season but answered stuff at the same time. Kinda hope there isn't actually aliens though. :x

And so, more questions come up, and the first season is merged into one story. Oishi and Rena 30 years later was just like O.o

This episode made me want to go back and rewatch the first season. But hopefully my questions will be somewhat answered as I watch more of this.

After two years of humming and hahhing I've decided to watch Kai, and I must say there has been some big changes since the original Higurashi! I like it so far, and I'm glad they still kept the 'crazy eyes' style on the characters when they get stressed/afraid.

A good start to the series. I'm impressed!

I thought that the alien part was Rena's imagination. I do agree that there could be a virus that makes people crazy, but i don't know if the three great families are behind it. It was a good start so far.

hmm not sure what to think, personally I don't like the whole alien, virus and human experimental thing, it's too much sci-fi and X-files for my taste.

Hopefully it's just a alternate story, a different way of describing what really is occurring if you will.

S right now we have two main questions. The perpetual June and the gas disaster. They have 24 episodes to explain them well XD

But now that I think about it there are more, smaller questions. The arcs. Apparently there are two main arcs (the two different worlds?) which, so far, aren't really connected. In this one Rena survives and the rest die, in the other one Keichi is the sole survivor. In this one Rika is killed before the accident, while in the other she dies from the gas. And if you take that, together with the concept of time repeating itself... it gets complicated.

rena is older form is so... odd. i feel bad that she's the only one who survived >.<

there's one part that's bugging me... if rika still died how she did in the arc where satoko pushed keiichi off the cliff and he died, how was he in the arc with rena and the school? see, it's just so friggin confusing! but, thankfully, a lot was explained.

and wow, rika is a creepy child >.< i wonder how Kai will be, though? is it going to stay in this time? or are all the main characters coming back? nvm, the answer is obvious...

Excellent start to the season. The whole meeting between that detective what's-his-name and Oishi-san felt very realistic and it was a good way to get one intrigued in the events that occurred in Hinamizawa again.

The character design and animation is bloody gorgeous, I'd heard it was improved in this season but this exceeded all of my expectations. It was nice to see that even in the flashbacks they had redone the whole scenes. Very nice, hope it stays that way.

Never payed much attention to that "aliens" thing, could some of it really be true?

Oh yeah...RENA SURVIVED TOO? She looks very cute as a grown-up. ^^

OP and Ed = like

somehow I decided to watch this season before season 1 and it made no sense. Now I understand everything.

So this seems to follow the last arc in season 1, and jumps into the plot quickly.
The alien thing is a bit random, well let's see how they explain this.

Such a depressing start to the second season. But what an intriguing episode it was!

Sad to see Hinamizawa again, in the aftermath of its ruin. =T Something about a complete wipeout of an entire small and beautiful town (no matter how disturbed) is just totally heartbreaking.

Grown-up Rena seems to have had the very life drained of her. Dx Not the Rena we came to know and love, all the energy and enthusiasm was taken away. Probably the effects of hospitalization and whatever else punishment she received for taking hostages, as well as the impact of the Great Hinamizawa Disaster. Just sad to see such a vibrant girl having grown up to be such a despondent woman. =T

More teasing about the true nature of the former village... Can't wait to find out the full story~ Must press on.... Episode 2!

Rewatching Kai, and I came asomething Akasaka said:
"Takano Miyo, as if knowing she was going to die, passed on her notes..."
I lol'd so hard from hearing that!

Oh, and apparently that scene with Rena and Rika at the junkyard was in this episode and they didn't leave it out...

And there I was, complaining it was left out... *fail*

EDIT: Apparently not one person in this thread questioned that "new" girl in the ending... ah well, you all know her now (as this thread is a few years old), but I'm surprised that not one person said anything about her here...

This episode confused me some, since in the 3rd arc of of S1, it said that almost everyone except Keiichi died and made NO mention of the school incident(which happened the day before the Hinamizawa disaster). While this can be accounted for by simply pointing out that they chose to reveal the school incident in a later arc(A6, eps 24-25 of S1) it doesn't explain why Ooishi includes Keiichi's name in those who perished in the Hinamizawa disaster during this episode.

Inconsistencies o_0 hopefully we'll get an explanation at a later date. Great episode though =D revealed a lottttt

The school incident doesn't happen in that arc. There's only one consistency in Higurashi: Furude Rika,Tomitake Jirou and Takano Miyo always die. Then there's an almost consistent incident which, as far as we know, happens in every arc except two of them: Hinamizawa is anihilated by an unexpected disaster. And the third part is the more inconsistent part: "someone" will succumb to madness and start a tragedy (This are either Keiichi, Rena or Sonozaki Shion). If by now you didn't get that Higurashi is literally a time loop then you need to rewatch the last arc.

Episode 1 of Kai is the epilogue of Rena's arc. Just like in Arc 3 Keiichi survived the Hinamizawa disaster, in Rena's arc she survives the disaster because she was sent to the hospital for psychiatric care the day before. As such only she survived.

Great Great Great! I just finished watching the first season, and the new one seems so promising with the first episode. Sadly, I'm not watching it in the best quality.. :/ I should take the time to download it but I just can't wait haha.

I thought Keiichi survived the disaster though.. Although that just might be the following to another arc. I feel so bad for Rena. She looks so depressed and deranged *sigh* I wonder how she got rid of the maggots...

He survived for several days and later died, after telling the events to a reporter. The game leaves it ambiguous but it hints that he either killed himself (Hinamizawa Syndrome), suffered some form of health failure or was killed by an unknown third party. The third novel's epilogue hints at rumors that villagers who happenned to be away and family members of victims sometimes died or just vanished, but in the end this can be either true or false, just like how the fact the reporter who interviewed Keiichi at the end died in an accident could be taken as just a coincidence , supernatural or as an incident. Since Tatarigoroshi is the last Question arc it merely leaves a lot of questions for you to wonder about.

40 years old Rena?
Almost 50 years old Akasaka?
60 something Ooishi?

Why are they afraid of drawing people older? What kind of a 40 years old Rena is that?
