Hmm.

When you think about it, there must have been other Puellas who found out the truth, across history. And it's a bit sad to think that neither of them were selfless enough to make a wish such as Madoka's.
"Tonight, I sit in the eye of the storm. As fire boils around me, I press forward, winds and lightning lashing my wings. I am no match for what I face. Yet I will not back down, and though fear may place it's stranglehold on my heart, courage will see me through. With tears in my eyes, I hit full throttle. My engines become an inferno, and my weapons light up, awaiting my command.

If I die tonight, I will do so fighting for everything I believe in."

Even if they'd know about it, those other puellas couldn't wish for it, 'cause Madoka is the only one who had the power to do so (to become "god"). And her power grows even more 'cause Homu is repeatly going back to fight AGAIN against Walpurgisnacht, so Madoka got even more power to become a "god".

Well, just my thinking... but even if the other puellas wished for it, it'd turn into despair, 'cause they didn't had the amount of power Madoka had.

People say this part is unexplained, but in all honesty, that’s because you didn’t rewatch episode 1~10 before you started watching this, and your memories of Kyuubey’s explanations on how this World works has become blurred since the past six weeks. In the universe of Madoka Magica, all elements must be kept in equilibrium - unlike in the universe of Suzumiya Haruhi, where Haruhi can make things out of nothing. With Madoka now firmly in control, she executes her plans of taking the ‘mud’ out of the diminished Soul Gems, so they never become Grief Seeds from the past, present and future. Essentially, the

It was shown in episode 11 that the ‘mud’ in the Soul Gem comes from despair and pain, so that means when Madoka removes this, all this despair and pain (which is normally harvested as energy by the Incubators) has to go somewhere else. That becomes shouldered by Madoka herself. Why else did this episode air on Good Friday? Today is the day of crucifixion of the Lord, Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary. At this very moment two thousand years ago, all sins; past, future and present flew upon him. What Madoka is doing is essentially the same thing, although she is shouldering all the grief of Mahou Shoujo instead of the sin of every living man and woman (Madoka has a far smaller burden in comparison).

Yes Madoka made a brave sacrifice and most of the Mahou Shoujos out there would thank her for releasing them from the burden of knowing they became witches in the end. But still, for each Mahou Shoujo she gave hope to she forced despair back on humanity. These new witches which spawned as a result of her wish shows that everyone, including her, had to pay some price for their wish and I don't just mean her life.

Because she gave hope to Mahou Shoujos someone else must be equally cursed. These new witches are much greater in number compared to the old system if you ask me. You never saw 10-20 of them band together on a day to day basis before like in the new system. All of the hope generated created a large amount of despair as well, even in Madoka's case. And it would seem even Kyouko and Mami used up their power and disappeared in this new world where there's an overwhelming number of witches. I wouldn't say this system is really any different. Mahou Shoujos disappear instead of becoming witches, but the accumulated grief still gives birth to a large number of witches and forces Mahou Shoujos to fight risking their life. It's not all that different. Madoka's wish could only go as far as the weight of her existance. It couldn't change everything for the better, all she did was mix up some of the rules. So the ending isn't 'happy' as some people say, it's a bittersweet ending where one problem was fixed but another problem replaced it.

Sad happy confusing final.
Best magical girl anime, though I haven`t seen many of those :P
Was skeptical to this one before starting on it, very happy I did start on it :D
Wanted to hear the ed instead of the op at the end, but I guess the ed is too depressing to fit at the end of that final :P
9/10, since the final was too confusing.

Listen, can we all stop with the "Madoka Died For Your Sins" posters? I mean, Madoka really didn't "die". Her wish made her never exist at all. So if you don't live, you can't die.

Here's my take on the ending.

Madoka's wish removed the existence of witches from the universe, in turn re-writing the whole universe. Her wish pretty much gave hope to all Puella Magi, for they now no longer have to worry about dieing and transforming into witches from their own despair.

HOWEVER, like how its been said multiple times that a wish that brings hope always brings an equal amount of despair, this is also true for Madoka's wish.

The removal of the witch system created a new system in the world which "demons" are born instead of witches. However, unlike witches, the demons are born from the negative emotions of every human, not just Puella Magi. Basically, her wish gave birth to an even more harsher system that cannot be broken, unless humanity ceases to exist. And as long as there are demons in the world, in order for humanity to survive, Puella Magi are still needed. This makes the final scene after the credits makes more sense. Probably after an unspecified amount of time, the world accumulated so much negative emotions that it gave birth to too many demons that eventually brought an apocalypse to the world and left Homura as possibly the only Puella Magi left standing.

In essence, Madoka's wish gave hope to Puella Magi, but at the price of giving the world more despair. Truly the perfect bittersweet ending imo...

I agree it is the perfect bittersweet ending ^^
Even if the ending was predictable to an extent it was still very enjoyable. It still gets a 10/10 for me.

Umm, I think there is single thing that you guys are missing. The reason Madoka could wish for such a ridiculous wish and able to defy all the time/space and logics was due to the fact that loop by Homura made Madoka to be center of everything.

Just rewatched in HD (fucking spectacular), and saw the ambiguous little after-credits scene for the first time, and all I have to say is WTF? Anyone care to explain? Did the demons transform the world into a huge wasteland or something, and Homura's the only one left to fight them? Goddamn, if that's the case, then forget bittersweet--this is pretty downright tragic. I think I'm just gonna pretend that the final scene is of Homura resolving to fight on before the credits -__-

Rather lacklustre resolution to a series that would have been much better off with a darker ending. 8/10 from me for being a good show. Revolutionary in terms of the genre, but pales when compared to Saya no Uta, which is arguably his masterpiece and defining piece of work in his career.

People have speculated it's a barrier but it's really hard to be sure. She may also just be in a desolate (but isolated) part of the world. But to me it seems like the hope from Madoka's wish just added an equal amount of despair ontop of the current system, making the new system harsher, until eventually Homura was one of the last few people left alive. At any rate it doesn't seem like Kyouko and Mami survived for too long in the new world. People also like to add Madoka's words of encouragement to their theory about how Homura was close to death, or about to disappear, so Madoka came for her and things like that. I think the nico version will clear things up a little better although the speculating is also fun.

I don't even know where to begin discussing this. There is just so much packed into this episode.
According the the very end after the credits, Homura is fighting in some sort of post-apocalyptic world. I assume she'll be fighting forever then.

I still feel like the end is lacking something though. It has been concluded very well, I guess I was just hoping for something more, whatever it could have been. I certainly didn't expect this sort of an ending. Maybe that's why.

So, basically, a wish cannot bring a dead person back to life, but it CAN remake the fabric of the Universe. Way to go, SHAFT! Let loose the trolls of war.
Still, it was an enjoyable show so I give it a 7+1(for the shock in episode 3)=8. A very good series, but not a masterpiece and definitely NOT "the best anime ever made" as some people call it.
Looking forward to a spin-off/sequel/whatever.

Took this from 4chan.
Madoka became an entity that goes around and saves Magical Girls so that when they die, they get escorted by her to Magical Girl Heaven, a’la Sayaka. She does this spanning the past, present and future. Madoka did not get rid of all the evils in the world, but she made it much better place. Anything else would require the complete eradication of all bad things ever, and would basically require the human race to be emotionless. Because emotions still exist, bad feelings still exist and they now take the form of the Demons. Magical Girls fight them to protect people. Soul Gems are now cleaned by those Cubes dropped by Demons. Homura was seen feeding a few to QB. When a Soul Gem reaches critical mass for whatever reason, i.e. being defeated, not defeating enough Demons and getting their Cubes, Madoka appears and takes the girl away. For those of you arguing that this is a bullshit ending and that nothing changed, I would argue that an ending where everyone was happy and everything was solved forever is bullshit. For who ask why nobody made a wish like this before, this was explained in episode 11, because of the time loop, Madoka has powers that can break the rules and limits on wish making.
Mami, Kyoko and Homura were fighting a DEMON WITH Sayaka, not AGAINST her. Sayaka used up all her energy in the assault, thus Madoka came for her and took her to Magical Girl Heaven
Homura’s powers may be different from every other Magical Girl’s because she was removed, at least in part, from the reformatting of the world. There is no trace of the existence of Madoka in the new world, save for Madoka’s ribbons which Homura currently wears, this alone is proof that her existence is different. This could explain why Homura is seen with Witch like powers. Conversely, it could be that in this new world, ALL Magical Girls have powers that look like that since there are no more Witches.
To the best of my knowledge, there was no implied religious/DEEP style ending. Madoka is not Evangelion or any other show you might compare it too. This explanation should stand on its own.
If you were disappointed with the ending because it felt like nothing changed, then you didn’t understand it and I hope this helped
If you did understand all this and still felt disappointed at the ending, well I am sorry you did not enjoy it. You can hope for a Season 2.
Wait.
So even if Magical Girls and Witches didn’t exist there would still be a enemy born from negative emotions? Yes those demons you saw
not OP, but to put it simply, now the girls know what there end is, and they don’t have to fear becoming monsters. Basically she grants them death. Being a magical girl isn’t supposed to be fun and games.
So this means even if the Incubators never came to the Earth negative emotions will still make monsters that kill us all. Yes Essentially.
Yes, and without the Incubators making magical girls to deal with those emotions, mankind would never have been able to progress
for the Homura thing, in the post-apocalytpic world, she’s going into her final battle where she meets her demise, which is why you hear Madoka because they finally reunite. But alot of it is up to your own interpretation
OP here, I’m not so sure about this part. For one thing it looked more like those Demons were about to get fucked up. Keep in mind that she could have just been fighting in a desolate place like a desert somewhere, the kind that exist all over the world in DBZ. Also Madoka talking to her is not necessarily a sign of her demise, as one removed from the world, she and Madoka have a connection, through the hair ribbons, and also the fact that they were the only two in the rainbow world while the reformatting was going on. So its possible Madoka just says “Hey” once in a while.
That IS why they were created. The Incubators harvested energy from the process of girls being flung into utter despair, which occurred when they became witches. Without witches, they have no way to harvest energy, and thus Madoka causes the heat death of the universe. I’m going to assume she doesn’t want that.
So either the demons are natural manifestations of grief that happen since witches don’t exist, or they’re manifestations of the massive amount of grief that Madoka herself took on. My guess is the first one, but the second is plausible.
Exactly. It’s not like Kyubey technically made witches, since they spawned naturally as well as from mahou shoujo. He didn’t create the methods to harvest energy, he just used them.
> For who ask why nobody made a wish like this before, this was explained in episode 11, because of the time loop, Madoka has powers that can break the rules and limits on wish making.
> because of the time loop
every time homura failed to save madoka the karmic weight that madoka has rose until it got to retarded levels and she could make a wish like that, as her wish and becoming a magical girl affected multiple time lines in the end.

Well, that was actually quite a bit better then I originally thought it may turn out and really, the ending was far better then it could have been.

I loved that tone of panic in Kyubey's voice when he realised exactly what Madoka was wishing for, it just made me chuckle. So much for not feeling emotion, because he had an "Oh FU-" look on his face right then.

Was I the only one who thought that Madoka looked kickbutt in that one scene where he hair got long all of a sudden and she was like, all powerful? That was just plain awesome.

I actually quite liked the scene where Sayaka and Madoka were talking and she just wanted to see him perform one last time. When he finished his performance and looked up and said her name, I found that overwhelmingly sweet. He never really acknowledged Sayaka in a positive light and I really didn't care for his character all that much, but that scene was a rather nice touch.

The scene between Homura and Madoka was just amazing. The voice acting was spot on.

Homura with the ribbon in her hair is adorable. End of story.

I can't help but love that last scene with Homura with Kyubey on her shoulder against the moon. That was just and awesome image.

I'm hoping the last scene is hinting at another season, because that would just be awesome. I really enjoy this cast and want to see more.

Also, loved the ultimate goddess dress of Madoka.

The ending was executed extremely well for its spectacular story and it was a great finish. I think people expected and hyped so much that when the ending was
a) wasn't a twist or mindfuck
b) wasn't depressing
c) throwing religious tie-ins because of the sacrificial nature
d) did not go as they expected it to go in their minds

As for the actual story itself: Remember that the ending would not have been possible if Homura did not intertwine those fate lines to Madoka (to give her power) as QB said. So while some people called it a cop-out ending to a story, or some deus ex machima, considering the story feels more situated about Homura than Madoka herself (especially in episode 10), I didn't see it as a shocker. I always treated the first 11 episodes as Homura's efforts towards achieving a less unfortunate end. The result?

MISSION FUCKING ACCOMPLISHED.
