this is a sad loss to manga readers in the U.S....

I don't know about everybody else but most of the manga I've seen came from Tokyopop

I'll admit there are a bunch of things Tokyopop did that I didn't really like but the North American manga industry would not have been the same (or even really gotten so big without them).

Before Tokyopop only a hand full of titles were every published in English they were always flipped and had to be bought in expensive floppy comic ($3 a chapter) format or a still expensive collected volume ($15-$20). Tokyopop was the first company to release titles unflipped and at that important $9.99 price point. They were also the first company to really get a lot of big shoujo titles like Sailor Moon, Magic Knight Rayearth, and Fruits Basket. They were the first to have a manga anthology magazine in Mixx Zine.

It's sad that it had to close down, it's the company that probably got people into manga in the first place.

lol @ people being happy about it closing.

I'd like to see Gakuen Alice completed so I hope that some other publishing company picks up that license. There were several other series of theirs that I wanted but I think I'll wait to find out what will happen with them first since apparently they will be releasing information about the future of specific titles over the coming weeks.

Well shit. This is bad news, I guess. They're a pretty good chunk of the manga publishers here. But does that mean that the manga that they licensed are no longer licensed in America?

I was reading something last night on whether Tokyopop would likely give away it's licenses or not.

I just hope so and whoever takes over - that they release them back in the UK too.

There's always the chance some other company will pick up Tokyopop(or its titles). If not, it was a good company while it lasted.

I think it most likely that a good amount of the titles Tokyopop had will be handed over to some other company and will keep publishing. It could be even possible that some the titles Tokyopop had will get out of licensing limbo(like Kino No Tabi and Beck).

(question related to my licensing/unlicensed manga post) Do you think it would work if i sent Tokyopop a last letter asking to see if the next company who takes over their titles will license the certain titles that were most voted for(such as YKK and Watashitachi no Shiawase na Jikan)?

Also, Could i still buy the Tokyopop versions of Kare Kano since they finished publishing in 2005 and its likely that they have plenty of copies left?

It'll be interesting to see how this affects other North American licensing companies (namely Viz, Del Ray and Yen Press). But it's still a real shame, seeing how they inspired my current love of anime and manga starting with Fruits Basket...

For question one - I don't think it would help. Most likely anything they had which made profit will likely be picked up.

Also as long as there is stock you should be able to get them.

Care to explain what you mean by that?

Poor translation work, negligent editing, horrid printing quality and a mediocre library at best, among other things.

Sure, they were the first to push for right-to-left, but that was ages ago; when is the last time they were even remotely relevant?

even though it's unfortunate didn't they badmouth people about not buying their manga's enough? with the horrible translation, poor quality, and overprice volumes, it's not that surprising that this company fell down.

oh and please somebody pick Mada Sama! i just realized after looking at amazon it was publish by them. Viz pick this up so that you can release a Viz Big Edition alongside Kimi ni todoke :P

I will really miss Tokyopop the most. ;a; I seriously bought alot of manga from them and i won a few contests from them. :< But they were good to me, even if they ticked me off before (i'm glad someone mentioned the toilet paper pages they had in the past. >_< That made me in rage and CMX did that as well.) But yeah, my shelf is now incomplete because yet again it's not the only company. :< I was looking forward for more Hetalia and Pavane, but i really wish them good luck. (as in the staff's future)

Not to mention volume 3 of the Kingdom Hearts II manga will probably NEVER come out now. I've been waiting years for that one. :( I really hope someone else picks them up.

Wow! This is such a shame, not a shock really given the economy, but it is sad news. While it is true that the quality of Tokyopop's titles has gone downhill of late, the fact remains that they were one of the reasons I got into manga - with some of their older titles like Sailor Moon, Cardcapor Sakura, Mars, Peach Girl, Tokyo Babylon, Magic Knight Rayearth, Ai Yori Aoshi, just to name a few.

I still hope that the few decent titles they shalll leave incomplete will be picked up by another publisher, Beck, DN Angel, Immortal Rain, Initial D, Maid-sama. While, I was hoping to start collecting Aria, I think I'll wait to see whether or not someone else picks it up.

Given the cost of doing business there - and I do know what I'm talking about, it's a wonder he hasn't closed up shop sooner.

I am older than Stu Levy, and had a very successful business in music in NOHO; however, the last 10 years were extremely expensive in terms of operating costs. And worrying about that crap will take a toll on ya.

I am sure Stu Levy will remain active in production, actually he pretty much said so in his press release. Best recommendation is get the hell out of LA, and take a break.

For the complaints about production values- to provide the high quality y'all dream of would make the manga so expensive y'all wouldn't buy them. Sending a really high quality 'zine of any kind to a really good press shop is incredibly expensive, and you have to add in the cost of the employees or service bureau to pep the issue.

Figure 30-40K per employee, and with benefits and taxes equaling about another 35-50%, an California just figure the pay doubled, and you are looking at a MINIMUM of additional charges of somewhere in the neighborhood of 100,ooo$ per issue-- and that's per series. And there are the better quality press fees. And to have better quality press value, you have to use a better quality paper (and I have yet to see a manga on fair paper, much less good paper).

It just wouldn't be profitable. While fans do it for love, other people like to eat regular and live indoors alot.

Wow, I'm sorry to see Tokyopop go under like this. It's great that their European division will stay open, but in the UK most of their titles I see are just imported from America; so I guess a good number of manga fans in Europe will lose out too. =(

So, who's going next?

That's Shinobi Life gone, then. I had volumes 7-9 pre-ordered. Suppli also, though it wasn't really my cup of tea and I was only buying to complete my collection.

Mirai Nikki I was kinda-sorta following to laugh at. I also own the first two volumes of Deadman Wonderland.

Even though their earlier translations, such as GTO's, were full of typos... even though they didn't translate sound effects... even though they dropped (forced, in one instance) two series I was collecting and heavily invested in... Tokyopop's death can only be a bad thing. It means less manga releases when manga is starting to die in America because no-one buys it.

I own all of GTO, Love Hina and Mars. Tokyopop released all three; introducing countless fans to them. For that, they deserve at least some sympathy from those who refuse to buy anything.

Oh dear, there goes my chance of ever owning the FMP and Gosick novels in english >:

Thankfully, I'm not currently collecting any manga they're releasing but there were a couple of incomplete titles (like Aria) that I planned on eventually picking up. Oh well, hopefully someone else will snatch those up >:

This is pretty sad, yes - I definitely got started on Tokyopop manga when they started the whole 'manga revolution' back in the day. D:

But to be fair, I thought the quality and pricing of their products were inferior to the competitors that appeared more recently.

I am sad, in a way. I was there when they first started up and my subscription to MixxZine was the first magazine subscription I ever had, and practically camped the mailman every month for it too. Unfortunately over the past few years, they have been struggling, and it was about time they just let it go and moved on. Anyone who has been a victim to one of their recently stalled/discontinued series can give voice to that.

However, on the good side, I wonder if the license for the majority of their stalled series can now be rescued by other companies. There are a few good ones **COUGHkinonotabiCOUGH** that I would like to continue.....

...you know what, scratch that, 'like to continue' is not the right word. I would cry TEARS OF JOY to get the rest of Kino no Tabi over here to the states.

Admittedly, I'm not too sad. It did get me into manga as the first one I really got into was Fruits Basket back in elementary school. But the other manga that I've bought from them is either already completed or I have no intention of buying more.

EXCEPT for Future Diary. That I'm sad about. I love it. And they have, what? Two left to publish? I'm not sure about 10 but 1-9 are out and I only have 1-5. It's sad as a whole but that's the only thing really bugging me.

Even if you never read ANYTHING that Tokyopop came out with, it's still bad news. Don't act as if this is a good thing that happened. Sure, they might have fucked up... a lot... and sure, they might have done that dreadful thing known as America's Greatest Otaku, but still.

This is bad for the American manga industry. While you might not have bought anything from them, a lot of people did, which brought a hell of a lot more money into publishing more things which you could've been interested in.

While other publishing companies can pick up the pieces, they won't be able to get everything. And someone out there won't be able to get their next volumes that they've been waiting for. As fellow anime and manga fans, I would think that at least YOU guys would be concerned. So take down your bullshit tough guy act.

That is all.
