Showtime! Henry Thurlows directorial debut on One Piece, for such a monumental episode no less. He got many free lancers for this job. Built different would describe it perfectly. Aside from them we have the usual suspects like Shida, Chansart and Thurlow himself as animators. No wonder that the leakers went crazy with the amount of shared frames on Twitter this time.

And this was truly a first time experience in many ways. The opening gave postcard memory vibes. A technique from the legendary Dezaki. The close combat with dynamique camera movement, the extra exhanges, Misery going full stand, the character acting during Damned Punk and the transition to the end card. Peak.

I looked up  Henry Thurlow because, while the name seemed familiar, I couldn't place it. I may not have known the name, but I do his work. I'm super excited now!

The b&w cells of Kid's memories were gorgeous.  I especially liked the one of Kid, Law, and Luffy. I would love to have that framed.

OMG that was the quickest episode ever.  It felt like 10 minutes. They should've done a double episode. Edge of your seat exiting! The animation was exquisite.

WOW THE ANIMATION! Henry did an amazing job directing this episode! Law's Puncture Wille did not disappoint, I was so hyped for that part for at least two weeks now! Kid with Damned Punk as the finishing blow.

Henry Thurlow is the director for 1066, and as far as hes aware and said, there has not been ONE single non-Japanese that directed any Toei animation series/episodes. He's quite possibly the first foreign director that oversees episode 1066 of One Piece. Many other foreign teams that are under him had also worked on this episode.

The episode has been stunning! After 571 episodes later, Big Mom will come to an end!

The last sequence with Law & Kid vs Big Mom was great, and the start of the episode with the black and white drawings was solid too. Couldn't care less for the rest of it as far as Momo pulling the island and the flower festival stills.

Wow, another fantastic episode! This episode was consistently visually stunning throughout, from the obvious Big Mom attack set pieces to even the short Luffy vs Kaido bit, to have this many perfect action based episodes in a row, One Piece is truly the best action anime to be watching this year. Kudos to Henry Thurlow and everyone else involved!

Law's puncture move as it own is just sick to think about. And it was perfectly animated thanks to the great staff under Henry.

Considering the pattern as of late, I knew we were in for another peak action episode after last weeks recap and they didn't disappoint. I especially liked the way the episode started, with all the flashbacks and the foreshadowing of the finishing blow. Dope creative decision there.

Law and Kid teaming up to take down Big Mom lived up to the hype. Just incredible action all around from them. Didn't care for the Momo and festival stuff, but the main focus of the episode was great enough that I can overlook that. Your era is over, Big Mom!

I'm just learning from previous posts that this was Henry Thurlow's directorial debut. For an episode of THIS magnitude to be your first shot at directing is a TALL task, but Henry fucking delivered. Bravo, he has a bright future ahead.
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

Your taste in anime isn't a personality trait.

MAL is literally just anime Twitter as its own website lol.

This episode really impressed and I don't know if its just me, but i noticed a bit of shaft style in this week's ep. So I wonder if henry has some association with shaft.

Next episode is one of all time favorite moments ever in the wano arc manga.

Some episodes have better animation but they don't usually leave me so impressed. This episode though, it was actually phenomenal. The fight was expertly animated and directed. Having one episode per two weeks might just be the way to go man.

As Kid is lying on the ground all bloodied up, we see a slideshow of his pirate journey, especially him meeting none other than the next King of the Pirates, Monkey D. Luffy! Law comes out to him and the episode starts.

Yamato and Momonosuke are still busy trying to prevent Onigashima from crashing into the Flower Capital and exploding. Luffy is still busy doing what he does best, kicking some ASS. What greatness from none other than the Fifth Emperor. Just… amazing stuff!

Law starts complaining about how Kid is the one who goes for the finishing blow and is stealing the shine. Of course, Kid doesn’t want to hear it. Big Mom gets up from Kid’s attack and it seems that her right arm is broken. She also mentions that Law broke her ribs. However, she uses her power to give her bones life again. Did she take more of her lifespan to do this, or did she use the lives of those she’s taken in the past. Or maybe she doesn’t need to take any life to heal herself like that. Either way, this spells trouble if she can continually recover like this… Big Mom goes back on the attack with Maser Saber. Kid fights back by putting an S on Big Mom and an N on a wall. Like a magnet, Big Mom flies and sticks onto the wall. Kid launches his bull at her, but she uses said wall as a shield and the fighting continues.

Kid and Law continue putting that work on, but Big Mom isn’t going down that easily. Law then does this technique where he launches a bunch of rocks, attacks Big Mom, and uses Room to switch places with the different rocks again and again. The animation on this is absolutely PEAK! Just some great visuals to showcase the badassery of Law’s powers. AMAZING! Law and Kid go for a combo attack, but Big Mom swats them away like flies.

Then, Big Mom launches a huge attack, Mother’s Visit Cannon 3,000 Leagues of Misery. Hera turns into a giant woman and starts beating Kid to a pulp. Even the Beast Pirates watching catch the smoke.

When Big Mom is ready to finish him off, Law uses Takt to drop a building on her. He then penetrates her with K-Room Anesthesia again, but this time he entends the sword all the way down to the ground level. Big Mom tries to punch Law off with Armament Haki, but Law doesn’t budge. Once it’s ready, Law launches Shock Wille again and creates a huge hole in the ground beneath them. She sends Misery after Law, but this time, it’s Kid’s turn.

He has a cannon on his left arm and launches an attack called Damned Punk. The TO BE CONTINUED screen has the effects of Kid’s attack.

Such beautiful colors to cap off another great episode.

WE NEED MORE ONE PIECE!

This ep was amazing, but the next ep is really the one that is going to surprise people. I really hope TOEI saves most of their budget for next week. We’re taking like potentially even 1015 or WCI ending equivalence.

wooooooo henry thurlow popped off on his debut! 5/5 episode for sure. manga panel-like flashback shots were fire.

there was no hype for this since last week was a recap, so this was a pleasant surprise.
law's consecutive teleportation attacks from 3rd person's perspective was my favorite part.
also, kidd getting beat up by misey with every hit being an impact frame.
they really sent big mom's big ass flying then law's sword went all the way through onigashima lmao.
big mom's era has come to and end and so if this fight.
very well-directed episode and even the 'to be continued' looked cool.

another week closer!

Without spoiling anything, after seeing these fights in the anime, kind of prove even more than the manga how much further Shanks and Blackbeard are in power, compared to Kaido and Big Mom,

I'm actually blown away. What an insane episode. From the very beginning it felt very different, but in the best way imaginable. I don't think I've seen One Piece like this ever before, so big props to Henry Thurlow for his debut as a director. Especially the black and white drawings caught my attention, since they added such a uniqueness.

In the last episode I was almost certain that Big Mom was beaten, but I couldn't have been more wrong. As Kaido she truly lives up the legend of being a monster. Law and Kid gave her severe injuries, especially here multiple broken arm looked super nasty. I was kinda in disbelieve that she's even able to heal her bones. The camera movement especially during Law's constant transitions was such a feast for the eye.

But what caught me off-guard the most was without a doubt 3000 Leagues of Misery. Holy moly. From there the animation went through the roof. What followed were so many beautiful shots that I would have a hard time to even count them all. Once again Law showed why he has one of the coolest devil fruits and abilities in all of One Piece. With Puncture Wille his sword went through the whole Onigashima Island into the ground until it reached lava. What in the actual fuck? In the meantime Kid just created a giant laser canon which also seems to have great effect on Big Mom.

Overall I don't think that there was a single second with "bad" animation. Momo's dragon form for example has never looked better.

Now I'm curious if Big Mom's time has finally come or if she can still withstand all of Law's and Kid's attacks. Can't wait for the conclusion.

Btw, the transition into the TO BE CONTINUED was once again fire.

loved it! It felt like a whole visually stunning new experience, It felt like one piece but at the same time something new especially with the animation. I loved the few scenes of black and white at the beginning and how it described Kidd's story, they explained years of a character through images, and yet the images were black and white but still vivid. The animation where Misery was beating up Kidd was beautiful, and then the scene where it builds up to Law Puncture Willie. 10/10 episode can't wait for the next

Henry's first time directing the first EP of OP? That's pretty insane, albeit there are flaws to it but it didn't really hinder much of an impact the episode has given.  The monochrome illustrations featuring the Kidd pirates at the outset added a captivating touch. The fight choreography, on par with Zoro's clash against King, took things to a whole new level. Particularly impressive was Law's lightning-fast utilization of Shambles to evade Big Mom's attacks while simultaneously launching devastating strikes. And Kidd at the end got me feeling good that the BIG MOM ERA IS OVERRRRR.
