Ohgawd. Dem feels. The acting felt so natural. Not a love story. But a story about love. Does that make sense?

One of my favorite movies.

I just watched the Bourne Supremacy last night. Had it on demand and needed a good action movie. Good like all the Bourne movies.

Django Unchained 9/10

EVERYTHING was over the top and cheesy, it was great. Over dramatic camera pans with cheesy music.

The shoot scenes were perfectly executed. Loved the excessive amount of blood.

The music Tarantino was meh compared to what he have used in the past. The ending song was the sole exceptions. With music I don't mean Ennio Morricone's scores because that was, as always, perfect.

The acting was excellent and so was the cheesy lines.

And god when they complain about the masks. So good. Laughed my ass off.

Its crazy to believe something like that could happen, and I by no means condone the actions Frédéric Bourdin, but man I have to respect his skill. That was just one crazy documentary. For those of you who haven't seen this film, the less you know going in, the better. That being said, its best you not look up this guy on Wikipedia or anything. In fact, don't even watch a trailer, just put on the movie.

Finally watched Moonrise Kingdom.

It was cute, almost too cute. And quirky, way too quirky. It can't be called cheesy, but whenever it's about romance at such a young age, you can't help but feel out of place watching it.

7/10, I think.

Stark Trek (the 2009 movie) Alternatively titled: James T. Kirk gets beat up and thrown around, a lot.

By the way, this might be long. (in other words, I loved this movie)

Yeah, I should've watched this when it came out. Maybe I was in my "Space movies are for NERDS!!" phase or....something. Also, didn't know Chris Hemsworth was in it (for like 15 minutes but it counts) so it was a pleasant surprise.

Overrall, I thought it was very good and I personally loved it. Can't compare it to any of the other movies since this is the first one I've watched and I never saw The Original Series. I think this movie won an Oscar for makeup and it deserved it, the aliens were all really well done and I'm a personal fan of the Vulcan ears.

I'll be honest, I watched this because I saw the trailer for the second one and thought Chris Pine looked Very Good and I dislike watching sequels first because, well, it makes no sense at all. Well, I'm glad Mr. Pine is an eye candy because I wouldn't have watched this otherwise.

I didn't really dislike anything in it but the romance between Spock and Uhura felt kind of...bland and unnecessary so I hope it's at least expanded upon in the sequel. I really liked Old Spock (or Spock Prime) though, would've probably enjoyed him more if I was a fan of the original series and movies.

It's also pretty amazing how Kirk is basically the Butt Monkey of the movie and still managed to be pretty darn awesome.

In the end, I felt this was a good introduction to the franchise. I WAS confused at some parts but by the end most of that was explained. I do recommend reading the tie-in comics and watching the deleted scenes since they explain anything left out of the movie.

The Great Gatsby -- Again, a movie I almost really liked; I liked the novel. It was hyper-stylized and vibrant, which I think would have worked well, but there were a few scenes where I thought it was too much. And there was quite a bit of noticeable CGI (which I've always hated) and some weird green screen shots that I thought were out of place, but now I feel like I'm getting picky. The music though, ughhh, I think Baz should've just stuck with 20's music rather than including modern music-- totally killed it for me. I have no complaints about actors or story.

tl;dr-- my 2¢: Pretty much, I thought everything was fine except for some of Baz Luhrmann's directing choices.

eh... almost & kinda disappointed, but still ok, 6-ish/10

I'm kicking myself for not having read the book yet. Leo and Carey Mulligan are great, so I really want to see it. I wonder if This Side of Paradise will ever get the modern movie treatment.

The last movie I saw was Late Spring, by Yasujirō Ozu. Not sure if anyone here is into movies like this. Every description of Late Spring's plot that I've read hasn't done it any justice at all. The plot isn't really that special. It's fantastic because of the directing, the characters, and the character relationships. Definitely recommend it to anybody that likes new-wave or old Japanese films

No, nobody is into movies like this.^^

Last films I saw was Le Passé from Asghar Farhadi who directed A Separation. The storytelling of this Iranian director is just stunning. I like how his movie starts as really simple story and get more and more complex as he throws at us some plot and psychological twists that lead his movies to unexpected direction.

Highly recommended!

Trying to catch up on a few kung-fu flicks.

Reign of Assassins. Directed by Su Chao-pin, and John Woo has a co-directing credit to help out with that name recognition.

You got to love it when there's an opportunity in a movie to become the ruler the martial arts world (awesome). Nah, it's actually okay. Not uber fantastic, but by the end alright. Makes up for a bit of lacklustre first half by a good second or so half. Could be my imagination but that sort of cheesy melodrama that pops up reminds me of the John Woo of old (Killer, Hard Boiled etc). In spite of myself, shed a bit of a tear.

Did like the character of the Magician as well. And weirdly Jung Woo-sung (lead guy) is not as good looking as he usually is (he's pretty good looking). Might be that shag pile carpet vest that he sports.

Fights okay. Thankfully the filming technique used in the opening sequence is never used again in the movie (freeze frame with the camera doing a 360 type thing).

Star Trek Into Darkness. I have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, it's fun and exciting, with great FX and a fantastic turn by Benedict Cumberbatch. On the other, I went into it with too much Star Trek baggage. The nods and winks to the series felt forced and pulled me out of the movie. And Karl Urban's turn as McCoy was SO much like DeForest Kelly, it bordered on parody. Not in a good way. Contrast him with Scotty, who made the character his own. Ditto for Kirk, Spock, & Uhura.

A bit spoilerly here

I disliked one scene that borrowed liberally (ok word for word) from an old Trek film. The idea to switch it up and have different characters speak the lines was just too cute. I understand others may like it, particularly in what Abrams is trying to do with cannon. It just didn't work for me.

Yeah, I don't know that much about Iranian cinema either, but that director is really encouraging me to give it a look, and it seems to be more interesting than I initially thought. Anyway, I'd suggest you to watch A Seperation first, since it's his most acclaimed movie as of now, and it would give you more insight on the life in Iran as it is set in this country while Le Passé is set in France.

Yeah, I saw it. The boys were a lot of fun, I especially like the younger son, just seeing his face was enough to make me laugh. I can still remember the scene where they are confronting their father, it was quite intense.

I can understand why you'd like it more than Tokyo Story, it has some interesting social commentaries, and the comedy was great.

Only God Forgives.

The new film from Nicolas Winding Refn (director of Drive). A pretty simple story about revenge based in Bangkok, the movie is short and slow paced, which is quite a shame, cause I'm sure the character could have brought more complexity to the movie if we saw more of them. So, all in all, the movie is pretty much an stylistics exercise where the director tries to blend the ultra-violence of some slasher movies with the mesmerizing beauty of the Thai Cinema. The idea is good, the execution isn't, the dream like sequence are not fascinating and memorable enough and the violence is completely out of control, which makes things look a bit childish and stupid at some point.

All in all, it was not bad, it was quite pleasant, but it leaves you a bad aftertaste. Disapointing.

Just looked this up and found this article.
Nicolas Winding Refn, said that he approached filmmaking "like a pornographer: it's about what arouses me. Certain things turn me on more than other stuff and I can't suppress that." He added: "I have surely a fetish for violent emotions and images."

Sounds interesting...
Anyways, Drive has been catching my eye lately. Mostly because Carey Mulligan is in it. I might check it out soon.

I just finished A Separation. Thanks for mentioning it. 10/10. I think it's one of my favourite movies now. One of the first I've seen in a while that really got me emotionally involved, anyways. Beautifully directed as well. Some of those shots made me drool.

The Hangover Part's 1 and 2. The first one was okay, it had some pretty decent humor and managed make me laugh a few times. That's really all I wanted so it's fine. But, Part 2 is pretty much the perfect definition of "lazy sequel". The structure and plot of the movie was pretty much copied and pasted from the first film, with a few differences and even how they found the missing person in both was very similar. Just lazy all around. Well, it still managed to pull a few laughs from me.

Finally watched The Evil Dead (1981) that was pretty awesome. It was campy as all hell and some of the effects were kind of badly done, but the movie legitimately creeped me out at points and Bruce Campbell does a great job in the latter half of the film. It was strange how wooden his acting in the beginning was when he did the scenes where Ash was terrified and pretty much going crazy so well.

The only zombie movies I've seen have been the 28 series, and the original Walking Dead, which was laughably terrible in a really really good way.

Last night I watched Akira Kurosawa's No Regrets for our Youth. Another one staring Setsuko Hara. It's a drama that takes place around the "Takigawa incident". Altogether an incredible movie. My only complaint is that they could have shaved some scenes off at the end and used the time to further develop the relationship between two of the main characters. The relationship seemed to get too serious too fast, because the movie skipped forward about 7 years without giving you much to work with.

I think Kurosawa is definitely most famous for his samurai movies, but his modern ones are amazing as well. One of my favourites is Ikiru. Heartbreaking movie. Definitely watch it if you're a Kurosawa fan.

Last movie I saw in theaters was the new Star Trek movie. It was good but I won't really go into it except that the big reveal wasn't that surprising. My husband figured it out 20 minutes in. It was nice to see Mickey from Doctor Who though.

I watched the Protector last night and I had forgotten how much I love that movie.
The Protector: A young fighter named Kham must go to Australia to retrieve his stolen elephant. With the help of a Thai-born Australian detective, Kham must take on all comers, including a gang led by an evil woman and her two deadly bodyguards.

Tony Jaa is incredibly. The way his body moves is simply amazing. He has some great fights in this film especially the Capoeria fight. I always felt that Capoeria hasn't gotten enough love as a martial art. You almost never see it in films.

The Guillotines.

Andrew Lau's effort at a big, epic, marital arts (but not really) period piece. Yeah, it is pretty bad.

The crack navy-seal/GI Joe/SWAT team action is pretty much abandoned early on, as is the actual guillotine. And then comes drama about oppressed peasants and brotherhood.

Too many ambitious themes, not enough time. All falls flat. Lau and the writers don't have a deft or subtle enough touch for most of it. You think Lau might know better as one of the themes is pretty Infernal Affairs.

What's good..................hard to say. Very nice scenery. Ethan Juan I guess does do steely eyed look pretty well. Xiaoming Huang tries hard I think, but is saddled with being Jesus. Jimmy Wang Yu actually puts in a good showing as 'Dad' - but very small part.

Le Cercle Rouge (1970)

Another film by Jean-Pierre Melville starring Alain Delon. It's a heist movie, surrounding a recently released criminal, a pursued criminal, and a sour cop. Incredible stuff. Melville also directed another movie staring Alain Delon called Le Samourai, which is very similar in tone and style, but I'm not sure which one I liked more. ALL of Melville's stuff is recommended though. Leon Morin, Priest is a huge favourite of mine.

Last couple of movies I watched were Tsui Hark numbers: Flying Swords of Dragon Gate and Doctor Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame.

Both big blockbuster, popcorn flick type affairs. Dee would definitely rival if not beat quite a few of the Hollywood numbers. Had a lot a fun with both (esp. Dee). I think Flying Swords gets a bit of a bad wrap (though I can see the criticisms) - but it's just shot and directed (for the most part) in a really assured style. It's definitely quite overblown and it's style is quite exaggerated (even by the more out there wuxia standards). It was kinda nostalgic for some reason.

The CGI in Flying Swords is terrible, not entirely sure why because Dee does a lot better on that front and was released earlier (both quite heavy on the CGI). One thing might be that because Flying Swords was apparently the first wuxia to be filmed natively in 3D - so the I don't know, the cameras are filming in super high clarity and the CGI doesn't match up to that? Could just be that it was just terribly done.

Richard Ng turns up in a small part in Dee (he used to be in all those Jackie Chan movies - couldn't believe it - really nice to see him again). His character's name is Donkey Wang (....). He does a really good job though as Donkey Wang! Flying Swords cameo spot is taken by Gordon Liu and he does do quite a good job as the over the top, evil, pasty faced head of the East Bureau.
