Lord no. British tv and trends and whatnot are, on the whole, not to my taste. I don't like X Factor or Justin Bieber or any of that shit that they show on tv. However I do enjoy watching Jeremy Kyle while at work, it makes us all realise that we haven't fallen that low yet.

I remain aware even if I don't watch them, courtesy of my sister who watched them none stop, and will talk about them enough so I never fall behind.

Then again, I do watch the occasional TV, like 'Mock the Week', 'QI', 'Misfits', 'Top Gear' and 'Doctor Who' among a few others, actually that'd be did. I have no Tv anymore... I might start falling behind.

Actually, the only thing I've fallen behind on is new music singles, I only used to hear them whilst browsing the video channels and stumbling on a music channel, so I miss a lot of the new singles. Been like that for over a year, and most were crap anyway.

I watch several American television shows, and honestly, I prefer them to most anime series. I also primarily enjoy American music (even though my favorites do include artists from other countries), and I read quite a lot. I don't watch movies often, but the ones I am interested in typically are (or become) a part of pop culture. Anime was one of my foremost interests when I was in high school, but now it's often put on the back burner in favor of other interests.

So, no. If anything, it's the other way around.

Ugh, yes. I don't really think it's a problem, but sometimes it's just hard to join in my friends' conversations.

For example, when I'm watching new anime series, they're watching new American shows and movies. When I'm reading new manga release, they're reading new teen novels. When I'm listening to the newest Japanese songs, they're listening to the newest American songs. I'm sure you get it by now.

I like American books and music, but I don't have enough time to catch up on those things. But American TV shows, well they're crap. I stopped watching most TV a year ago.

But I still watch Criminal Minds because my sister and I watch it together and Family Guy because it's hillarious. Otherwise, I avoid the TV altogether and just nod my head and smile in their conversations.

Fuck pop culture in Canada.

I don't know about USA, but here in Canada it's like all I see nowadays is little kids wearing urban designer brands sporting BlackBerrys, iPhones, Beats by Dr. Dre headphones, and some other shit. I just don't think it suits young children nowadays. Whatever happened to good music too? WTF is with all these shitty hip-hop & rap music on the radio? Well, it's not even limited to hip-hop/rap...

I haven't watched TV, American movies, or even listened to American music for 6 - 7 years now. Just seems boring to me. I only watch anime and listen to Japanese music for the most part. Might give Korean stuff a try someday.

As a fellow Canadian, I completely agree with everything you wrote, though I don't watch anything on television. In my opinion, who needs to watch the news/documentaries on TV when you can watch them all online?

I feel compelled to point out that there is more to American pop culture than Justin Bieber and Jersey Shore. It's true that reality television and young pop stars are a part of it, but to discount everything else American culture has to offer because there are a few public figures that you dislike is kind of sad.

Also, to say that there's nothing on television or that "all American tv shows are bad" is somewhat ridiculous, considering the number of shows and wide variety of content available. There's something for practically everyone. For example, I don't like reality television either, but there are comedies (Modern Family, Community, Psych), sci-fi/fantasy shows (Fringe, Supernatural) and crime dramas (Person of Interest, Hawaii Five-0, Dexter) that I enjoy. Several of these shows, and others, share common elements with anime - and in fact, one of them has been adapted into an anime series (Supernatural). I don't understand why the medium or the country it is produced in should matter so much, as long as it tells an interesting story.

Sorry for the rant, I just don't understand why so many Americans seem to hate their own culture. I acknowledge that there's a lot of entertainment out there that is lacking in quality, but that doesn't mean there isn't anything good.

I've hardly listened to any music made in the last three years and I'm only watching two on-running American TV series. I don't go to theaters and I haven't seen most of the latest films. My knowledge of pop culture within my own country is even worse.

But it's not because I'm distracted by anime. I'm currently not watching any.

Hollywood has went to hell, all those rom coms and chick flicks, first of all chick flicks these days suck, and romcoms you shouldn't be watching them in theaters or on most western television, anime is way better for romcoms and if you need a live action romance go for some Spanish Soap Operas or Taiwanese dramas, both are great.

Is anime distracting me from British pop culture? Yup, but I don't mind, as (going by Baman's definition, and not going off British TV shows in general), British pop culture is generally comprised of reality shows like Strictly Come Dancing, The X Factor, Big Brother, which I don't like, Doctor Who, which is about on a par with the better shounen anime running, Top Gear, which is fun enough to actually be worth an hour of my time if I remember about it, and the footy (that's soccer to any Americans out there), which I sort of like, but it can be rather hit-or-miss depending on the match. Also, the players are overpaid.

Other stuff I enjoy on TV includes Formula 1, which generally proves to be a more consistent source of excitement than the footy, Loose Women, another source of mindless fun and some of the natural history-themed programmes that tend to come on British TV, but hardly enough for anime to be considered a distraction. But really, the only piece of recent British fiction (so this doesn't include sports shows, Top Gear, Loose Women or nature documentaries) on that has been on TV recently that I feel like I need to watch is Outnumbered.

But if you rephrase the question to "is anime distracting you from experiencing the greats in other areas of fiction", and the answer will be "yes".

American TV isn't that good in general, aside from a few niche shows here and there, most of the popular stuff everyone and their mother talks about is generic crap that I rather not be bothered with anyway...

This.

The reason I am bothering with another country's pop culture is my opinion my own countries pop culture isn't very good (ie. reality T.V, Family Guy, MTV, etc).

I don't like British TV. It's boring and full of crap except for Doctor Who.

American TV bores me with its obvious outcomes in storylines and bad jokes.

We don't get anything other than the two above, plus I enjoy cartoons (despite my age and maturity) and there's no good ones around anymore. They're all 3D and teen fantasy crap.

I enjoy anime because it's got that consistency about it but with different storylines, humour and filters out the crap that British TV gathers (if you've seen what kind of stuff we have on here, then you'd be glad anime doesn't contain that stuff).

I don't know, I've just lost faith in broadcasting here and would only watch for nature documentaries or Doctor Who now.

First I have to say this is my opinion.

I have to say that American television has downgraded starting around 2003 or so. After that time, all they talk about is useless information that none of us care about. The good cartoons also died out during that time as well. In retrospective, I love all of the American cartoons that were in the 90's and very early 2000 but now that is over. This would probably explain why I watch more anime now since I found a quality medium that has a distinctive charm that I love.

Overall, my answer is yes it has distracted me from the useless, mind my words, pop culture we have in my country.

Not gonna lie, but everything you said is the same reason why I watch anime and old cartoons i used to watch on T.V. on the Internet. some of the garbage they put on T.V nowadays only makes me cringe and wish it was like the old days like 10 years ago.

I don't even think that's real hip-hop. It's completely absurd. Music nowadays deface hip-hop, not restore it. That's why you hear so many underground rappers who say hip-hop is dead. It's all these damn radio-friendly songs that piss me and many others off.
