Absolutely awesome. I thought I wouldn't see Nanami again, but now I got THIS.

I normally watch this because of the banter between Togame and Shichika, but this episode was really epic. (even without much Togame)
Nanami is win. Found her already interesting in ep1, but really... I didn't espect her being like that.

I sure didnt expected Nanami having side like that. She brings term "badass" on completely new level.

Just like everyone else im disappointed that they didnt show fight between Sabi and Shichika, but to hell with that since it was such an AWESOME episode im going to forgive em that one.

Not everyone.

I thought the fact they didn't show it was my favourite part of this episode by far.

What an awesome episode! I too have feeling that Nanami will become an antagonist. She like Sylar from Heroes, always wanting new techniques, I mean you can see how happy she gets when she sees a new move. That devilish smile is damn creepy. Also she might even be affected by the "poison" of the swords.

Yes it sums up Nanami ability. I was wondering where I heard that before, now I remember it is from Needless, Adam Blade's fragment.

I wish there was more like her, she's a really interesting character I wish to see more of her. I finally find my favorite character in Katanagatari!

Just when I thought this series was quickly falling off, this episode came and brought back my full interest. I officially love Nanami, I was hoping she'd have a more prominent roll and thankfully she does. The entre episode had me like @.@ in awe. sadly it seems like we missed a pretty epic battle. Shame.

He's now my favorite Maniwani.

Anyway, this series is just getting better and better. It was a nice change from the regular sword hunt and Nanami was great. Kind of creepy too. I'm really looking forward to seeing what she does in future episodes.
And I couldn't help laughing during the flashback scenes. Young Shichika looked absolutely adorable, but also funny with the big head and small body xD

Dude, the preview was the fight. It probably took place in less than 5 minutes. They may end up referencing it in the episodes to come, but they probably won't show it all.
I was not the least surprised about the sister being all cheats and all. It was pretty obvious since episode one that she wasn't just some frail, sickly girl.

I really am stuck on my thoughts about this episode. The story of this one was great, really good. It was by far the best content this show has had so far no doubt about it. The lack of Togame made it even better.

What REALLY pisses me off though was that we didn't even get to see the big fight. I was so hyped after the last episodes preview and expected it to kick ass. Instead they just talked about it :/ I would have preferred if they spent the next episode on that and then rushed two swords into another episode or something. I just feel like they decided to completely cut what could have been the most awesome part of the show :/.

So pretty much I really enjoyed the episode but I am also really pissed of at it.

I have to admit, I was looking forward to seeing Sabi fight... but the episode was clearly the best so far. Nanami ended up being so amazing, not just her power but the turn of events and her calmness and creepyness. So good.

I think Nanami will be a huge presence later on; I mean, it seems now as though the island was her prison for her thirst for knowledge and now she has a means to get off it and a taste for swords/adventure.

Nanami ftw! Also needs more moe Togame scenes :3

The fact that they trolled us and still did an awesome job this episode... Is pure win.
I am really warming up to this show and, as people have said, it is indeed getting better.
I think they did this so it wouldn't be such a episodic show in a sense, and as they did not fill it in with horrible crap i am fine missing the Sabi fight. (Although i would have prefered both.)

Lol, your right. I'll probably end up giving this a 9 though, maybe a 10 for what it is. Also looks like some people "dropped" this, I guess they don't know what a synopsis is. =\ Shame that this series will be get rated improperly now people are disgruntled.

I actually watched episode 3 and 4 back to back so I didn't have a month of anticipation. So the fight with Habi wasn't suppose to be shown since it wasn't in the original work? I can't imagine the fight being that special but I like seeing how he gets the sword though and see how it happens, routine was thrown off except that he still gets a sword each episode but now sometimes we wont see how he gets it unless they give us a vague summary again lol. Well, Nanami's story made up for it.

UGH... I don't think I ever got such a headache out of watch an anime before! Really, I don't think I have had anything like that before watching this episode! I mean... GAAAH!! Like... r... r... really?! REALLY?!! GAH-HA-HAAAD!!

Okay look before I state my opinion of this show, I just want to straighten out in advance that anyone who reads my post may obviously disagree with me. And that's totally fine! People fell in love with this episode! Though I don't think I can ever motha-fukcing understand for the life of me why that is, I have no intention of knocking anybody off for thinking that way. Thus, my comment is not meant to be offensive at all.
______________________
*sigh* With that warning being said, ...what... the fuck... was I watching?!! What did I waste the last hour of my life on?!! I mean I felt so frusturated watching this episode for a few reasons. The most obvious being the fight scene between Sabi and Shichika being cut off altogethor. The second being the fact the maniwa corp insect squad did not know when to actually act like ninja and shut up!! The third being the fact Nanami didn't know when to shut up and how she variously kept repeating her words like "die" and "stance," thus making her dialogue very rigid. And the fourth reason was the fact that compared to the third episode, this one overall felt so disappointing. And it's a shame too because I thought episode three was the highlight of this show so far.

I as much as I liked the staging and the fact the characters were actually moving as oppose to just sitting/standing/walking while talking non-stop, ...the characters were still talking non-stop. Not that I'm trying say "less talking, more fighting," but just say what you need to say as oppose to what you simplyfeel like saying. And don't make your explanations so damn thorough either, please! Like what are the people at maniwa corp being taught as ninja anyway?! How to show off and brag to the point where it actually becomes the death of you?! Seriously, even Black Star and Naruto know when to shut up when neccessary!

And I get how it's adapted from Nishio's light novel, thus it's in a way, Nishi's way of storytelling. But my argument for that is that there's somewhat of an art to adapting a story from one media to another. There's a matter of how steadily the flow of telling that story is depending on the media you're adapting. In the case of an animation, it makes so much sense in my opinion to take advantage of staging, animating the characters, using color, gesture, transitioning, etc. to substitue for whatever dialogue, unless the dialogue is that neccessary. And I've watched shows where the dialogue seems excessive, but neccessary. Katanagatari however has dialogue that's excessive, but unnecessary.

Whatever Nanami had to say, wasn't neccessry enought to be said over and over again! The insect ninja, ...well they're ninja! Keep your fucking ninja arts to yourselves! If the script writters at White Fox studios could've just trimmed the dialogue, there would've been room for Hakuhei's appearance. And also for the love of God, don't trick the audience to being so damn anticipated for a fight scene that isn't even gonna happen, PLEASE!!
_____________________
Now, I know people are going to argue against my opinion on this episode, and that's fine if you disagree and want to explain why you disagree so your opinion can be interpretted. Just bear in mind, whatever response I may have, I'm gonna have a hard to time responding back without coming off as an asshole for whatever reason. So forgive me if I piss people off in anyway or just don't bother replying altogethor. *laughes* I'm just that frustrurated with this episode!

Yor coment was way too big,I just read half of it.I have do disagree with you because I liked this episode.I mean, just watching Shichika's fights would be boring it was good to put his sister fighting some ninjas.During all the anime so far the ninjas talked too much so I don't think this reason could count as "I dont liked this episode" but as "I didn't liked this anime"
The only thing I agree with with you is the Sabi's fight scene.

UH NO, NO!! Stop right there!! Go back and take your time reading my comment so that not only you'll know the whole point in it, but also so that you can also sympathize with my frustration as to read tons and tons of dialogue thorugh fansubs of all things. There was importance to what I typed.

Also, telling me "I disagree because I like it" is not enough to interpret what specifically it was that you liked about it. If you disgaree, then fine, explain more constructively your liking behind this episode. And as for Nanami appearing in the scene, I had no problem with her fighting for a change. I was actually suprised. I just wished the whole thing wasn't dragging on it's feet, until the skin on the feet were being scraped on (I'm sorry if that at all sounded graphic).

Since I am re-watching now,i don't feel this episode dialogue is unnecessary except for the "Shichirin joke".

Can you along anybody else who's gonna come up with this same argument just stop bringing it up, please?! Because it creates a really annoying miscnception about my opinion! Did I NOT mention how much I LOVED episode 3?! Or does everyone love to find the hate in everyone's words and think they it's neccessary to feel offended over an opinion that by the way, WASN'T MEANT TO BE OFFENSIVE?!!

Let's settle 2 things right now!:

1) I DON'T HATE THIS ANIME!!

2) Just because I want less dialogue, does not mean I want more fighting instead. I just want the studio to use as much of the tools for making an animation that can substitute the dialogue as much as possible. If you read this and don't know what I mean, do me favor and don't ever reply back with the "this anime is about talking, not fighting" argument again and go read a book or an article online about the fundamentals of telling an animated story!

I wouldn't say "suggest," but rather being wishful that the way the story is being adapted is more according to my preference. Again I'm just "wishing."

MorninhGlory said:
I have to admit this Anime is a bit odd compare to many normal Anime.Well this is a historical Anime,If they used over high-tech tool for the Animation may look even more "special".

I... think there's a misconception of what I mean when I say "tools of making an animation." The way I see it, regardless of what is being adapted from what, there's a difference between telling any story through a novel, an animation, a comic, a motion-comic, etc.. With animation, characters move frame by frame in real-time, something that can't be done otherwise through a comic, or a light novel. And since the frames are drawings, visual imagination can be used more easily than through a live-action film, even with CG. So it makes sense to take as much advantage of imaginative sequential drawings in animation as possible.

If say you adapted a story from a novel, you can get away with using excessive dialogue because it's neccesary to tell the story where you have to read it. With animation, you don't need to read it, but you do need to watch it, thus you make the most advantage out of telling the story through drawings in motion than anything else. The "tools" are anything can help tell an animated story that way. In my opinion, while dialogue is an essential tool, there are other tools like coloring, use of camera angles, squash & stretch and what not that could prove as more useful.

Right cause you have more knowledge about it more than those who animated this series, go tell them

Because it seems that you disagree with the animators about how they adapted and use the animation on telling the story, i myself doesn't have a knowledge about it, but i enjoyed those talking, why? those VA did a good job telling the story using their voices, and i didn't move or regret spending those 40 minute of my life, anime is not only animation

Just a personal opinion from nobody of importance, i'm not here for a debate, i'll just get back and continue watching another anime

Nice that somebody thinks about this anime like that. Even though I liked episode 4 (and will like episode 10) I generally agree with your opinion on the anime as a whole.
I read the first 2 volumes and skip-read through the rest, I just couldn't keep fully reading them because they were just artificially stretched to fit the 12 volumes.

I like the basics of the story (even though I have to disagree on this being a historical anime...it's about as historical as Dragonheart was to the middle ages) but it's just too much and the anime does nothing to improve these points.
It's really not about having too much talking, but actually more the fact that this does not use the fact that it is a visual medium enough. Of course they want to stay close to Take's original art, but sometimes (like I already said) this is more like a slide-show with narrators.

@MorningGlory: And I would also disagree that this anime is deep. It might be well constructed in it's idea, but calling it deep is a bit too much, I think.
There is just so much unneccassary dialogue stuffed in, just to make it stretch over a whole year (both the novel and the anime). I think the same plot could have been fit into about 3 or 4 novels instead of 12 if they just had cut the endless (and also often looping) chats a bit shorter and kept it to the relevant parts.

Wouldn't both points relate though? I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't the excessive dialogue be a direct outcome of not taking enough of an advantage of being a visual medium?

Also, maybe because the fact I never read the light novels and don't care to read them contributes to me not caring how faithful the anime is being adapted. Then again, when I watch anime in general, even if I do read whatever novel/manga it adapted from, I'm not nitpicky with how accurately/inaccurately the anime fllows the source material as longs as it feels like a good anime.

What I meant was that I don't mind anime or material in general that includes excessive talking, as long as there is a point to the talking. Just as you said too, I think.
Talking isn't bad as long as it fits the mood and has a point in either the plot or the message. For example Mouryou no Hako was full of talking, too, yet there were always animated portions to make up for it AND it served the purpose of driving the investigation forward.

Well I'm someone who often reads source material if I liked the adaption and the other way around, but I would say it's less about being totally faithful to the exactness of an adaption, but more about having the same atmosphere and also giving it something that actually complements the material and gives the adaption an actuall reason to exist.
It's difficult with Katanagatari because I think the whole material is to stretched and not only a matter of adaption, but the real negative part of the anime (at least for me) is the fact that there is nothing that makes the anime stand out either.

From what I gather from the people who have read the novels, the dialogue is heavy even there. So we come down to the idea that one of the main points of Katanagatari is to not only be dialogue-heavy, but to also side-step the idea that these types of tales have to be about the action. This episode made that declaration very very clear. In the same way that a show like Naruto or Bleach is about it's protagonist getting magical power-ups to defeat their foes, Katanagatari is about everyone saying exactly what's on their mind during a battle.

Now, on top of that, in the case of this episode, Hypeathon, you note that the repetition of certain words and phrases made Nanami's dialogue come off as stiff, and therefore disliked it. That's funny to me, because I loved it for the same reason. This is an instance of how good writing, and well-crafted dialogue can be employed to characterize someone. Besides the fact that she said her stance would be "fig tree," her mode of speech further paints a picture for how stiff, and resolute she is as a character. She minces words and get's relatively straight to the point. She knows that any wasted movements on her part is a movement closer to fatigue. So rather than strike fear into her opponents by just being physically intimidating, she takes her appearance into count and subverts everyone's expectations of her as an advantage. Furthermore, she keeps going back to how she envies people with healthier bodies, and less of a penchant for learning than she does, and how that relates to having watched over Shichika all this time. On the one hand, I don't doubt that she honestly has his best interests at heart (and to hear people think she might fight him as the main antagonist seems a little weird to me), but that doesn't stop her from being as ruthless to him as life has been to her.

I think your main contention is really that the story isn't doing what you want it to do. Now, I've felt this way in lots of series before, but when what is being done is almost the main point of the show on a conceptual level, you kind of have to throw out those expectations and evaluate it for what it is doing (the last time I really had to do this was with Lain and Umineko). I personally don't see how a single line of dialogue was wasted in this episode, and I think that counts for a lot.

Also, with regards to anime being a visual medium, and taking that into account, there is something to be said when there seems to be a choice to go ultra static. Not the SHAFT, we-don't-have-time-to-animate-so-here-are-zoom-ins-of-eyeballs-and-pans-of-nothingness static, but very calculated, quick direction that, yes is static, but is so fast that it creates an illusion of movement (which also compliments Nanami's fighting style rather well). In this episode, I only felt like the show was wasting time in that (direction) respect once--I think it was a shot of Nanami that lingered maybe 3 seconds too long.

And then, to go along with this being a visual medium, I still don't think the character design gets enough credit for being as progressive as it is.

Well, you just have to think about what it's trying to do, and the priorities in how it achieves that. It's still subjective, but I think it's possible. In the case of Lain, I just said to myself, "Ok, this show isn't trying to be entertaining in the basest sense, it's trying to be thought provoking. Does it really succeed there? I didn't think that it was because it spent a lot of time trying to tell a story, but also trying to be detached from said story. It was a little harder with Umineko, because Ryukishi spends the question arcs throwing out data and red-herrings. So I kind of had to look at all the theories he put out there and tried to find some kind of connector.

But I like being as objective as I possibly can. I don't like the thought of emotions swaying me so much to one side. But when it happens (like this episode) I love it. Even if it's something I absolutely hate on every level. That's an achievement also.

No, not so much being a positive thinker as much as it is thinking about what the show is trying to do, and then looking at how all their choices support that direction. When my expectations are wrong, it's normally because I expect everything to be so cliche as opposed to "epic." In the case of Bantorra, there was just far too much deus ex while not presenting the story in a fashion that allows the viewer to really get to know any of the character. Also, you forget that I praised Hamyuts as one of the best female characters I've seen in a long time because she was so different, so morally grey, and yet very charismatic.
