THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
I'm really impressed with the beginning.
We have a dramatical Romeo+Juliet storyline, passed from grandparents to grandchildren; a misanthrope soegun, non-caring if people will die to choose his successor (kinda joking, because I can see that if his grandsons try to decide it by themselves, the whole country will be divided in two parts and sink in blood); two guys (may be more will come in the next episodes) with unique martial arts.
The animation appeals to me greatly, and the plot seems interesting too. So... I'm enjoying it =)

Credits for the av go to whispering-eden.livejournal.com =)
I used to be Dolce_Vitka here, but Vitka_Lynx is my nickname at alost all other sites, so I decided to take it here, too ^___^

Are you using some kind of advanced logic I don't know about? Have you decided to assign new meanings to English words? Are you just intentionally burning a straw man and knowing full well that you're changing the subject and misrepresenting a claim?

The Kouga Clan and the Iga Clan can be compared to the ruling coaltion and the opposition parties of the Diet as of now. Both sides seek to eliminate the other, whether it be just or unjust; it's all the same and doesn't matter.

this series uses the same names and same premise as the movie, Shinobi. Not sure which came first but very good first episode.

Wow, can't remember any show with such a powerful start. So much action and it's just the first episode.

It wasn't too bad. It seems like some awesome techniques are gonna get demonstrated in this show, which I like.

I didn't expect the geezers to take advantage of the guard let downs, though it seemed obviously logical.

Hard to keep up with the names, but other than that what I expected. There will be a lot of death in this show for sure. I liked the Romeo & Juliet story and I hope there's more of that later on.

Boy do anime babes sure age badly. Grandma Iga surely showed her age there.

Indeed. Only 33 years have passed since that flashback. Yikes.

The ending surprised me a little after the flashback was shown, I thought for sure they would do something to end this long standing rivalry between the Kouga and Iga, but to no avail I suppose.

I might be making a wild statement, but I swear that animation was Production I.G. level. ;o Anyway, promising start so far.

Looks like another pretentious teen anime with blood as excuse for 18+ rating, because this is how childish bullshit become adult "serious" anime in our times. Mutants - check, ninjas - check, simplistic plot - check, predictability - check, is it ninja-turtles? No way, because also we have here pseudo-historic setting, caricature on traditional japanese music and dull opening scene with snake and eagle just like from some spaghetti-western from 50s.

A bit confused with all these names. And the only two people's names I remember are both dead now so...was that ending supposed to mean something to me

Well, I feel sorry for the grandchildren we saw at the end because I have a feeling it's going to be even worse than it was for Danjo and Ogen.

It's pretty good. Didn't expect it to be this good<Though the names are difficult to remember>. The OP is good. The translation of the lyrics of the OP is really romantic.

I remember watching this when I was about 12-ish... but didn't get to finish the series. I think now is a good time to watch it fully!

It's hard to keep up with the names, so I'm watching it subbed. Definitely a must see if you want Romeo and Juliet but with superpower ninjas?

wowow well that was a remarkable first episode.. I had to it replay to find hints and clear up names. Fate can be cruel at times but it looks like the third generation is going to get a chance to break the curse(?

Too many names and clans to keep straight for a first episode. Then you throw in the flashback?

Overall it was meh, but I can see it improving as we learn the characters a little better.

In the English dub, the VA for the young Ogen was brutal. I hate it when these female characters whisper, as if it's somehow sexy or cool or whatever the fuck they think. NOBODY actually talks like that. I immediately hated her for that, and then hated her even more when she turned on her lover without hesitation. I found myself hoping young Ogen would die (before I even realized it was a flashback and that she was the old hag from the rest of the episode). So I'm glad she's dead and I hope we don't see her anymore, but I'm not holding my breath.

As for the current-day war and the current-day love story, I've got hope. But we'll see.

I was wondering what the fuck was going on, then I realised it was a flashback. What a pain.

A lot of exposition in the form of various clan and family names that are hard to remember. That said, I'm sure context will provide more memorability to these surnames.
