Oh, so the infiltration for Shanks is done, Harald gets the nod instead. Ida, you can’t play only feel sorry for her really, Estrid family is rotten to the core. It’s getting clearer how exactly the WG think Harald was a fool when they plan to have Elbaf under their control, and we might have an idea how exactly does Loki got frame for his murder. Like Jarul never said anything about it, like he never indicated that Loki killed Harald.

Some very rough looking pages this time. Oda really needs his breaks...

This confirms that Holy Knights and Gorosei can't just ramdomly appear on any island, an Abyss Pentagram is required. And once someone of them is on site they can summon others with the mark.

Umit is featured again, most people probably wouldn't recognize him

Should've listened to your best friend smh. Even Saul could've told him a lot about the Buster Call on Ohara which blasted away the innocent. He even witnessed first hand how the WG treats humans. And yet Harald realized too late that he made a deal with the devil. Unlike Otohime he ended up sacrificing a lot more in his noble pursuit to make Elbaf join the world. Desperate to overwrite history he failed to notice that it's military might is the most sought-after.

Shanks looks so much more competent in contrast. Played then from the very beginning and left before fully offering himself to Imu.

And another one...Mom's have been dying in flashbacks, especially post time skip. RIP Ida. She was cooking with the cherish your culture dialogue. It's a very relevant topic in our current times. Oda did something interesting here, even tho it makes Harald look bad. The line between flawed character and plot induced stupidity is thin here xD

Harald's gonna have them kill him. Called it back when first Loki appeared that he wasn't evil at all and was gonna be an ally and yet people actually bought that Loki bad crap.

Oda always killing off the good, wholesome mothers 🥀

Welp everything has come full circle and now we're back where things started, with the full context behind Harald's death. I think most readers were able to predict the obvious, that Loki maliciously killing Harald was a misdirect and there was something deeper behind it, which this chapter confirms. We have what, 2 chapters left this year after the break? So those 2 chapters will probably be some aftermath stuff that wraps up this flashback and we can kick off the new year by going back to current events.

Side note, I noticed unfinished artwork in some panels, it can't be said enough but hopefully Oda is ok 🙏

Looks like there's some unfinished art in this one that'll be finished in the volumes, not too unusual but the second time in OP that I remember
But regardless of that this was a great chapter, just I figured Harald was being controlled in the end tragically, now we're finally reaching the conclusion of this amazing flashback!

Shanks left before becoming enslaved to Imu’s control. Unfortunately, Harald was too naive to realize what he was signing/marking himself up for.

With this, we can conclude that Harald asked Loki to kill him to prevent Imu from enslaving the giants :(

So Harald is getting roasted by the fandom and I understand why but I still think he's a well written yet tragic character in the sense of Oda using him as an example of what happens when one is blindly and desperately invested in one's own vision, dreams and ambition. One of Oda's core themes in the story is the theme of unapologetically fulfilling dreams but with Harald, Oda is showcasing the ugly, bitter and heartbreaking side of it and I feel there is a lot of wisdom in that.

Oda's perspectives, his approach and angle of such topic as one's culture is amazing.

Never be ashamed of your own culture and history. Never abandon them.

This cost Harald a lot.

Loki on the other hand never ditched the old ways.

rip ida tho.

loki putting up with a insane burdens on his shoulders again and again, looks like he'll become one of the best characters.

Give me after One Piece a Xebec spin off about his time before raiding the levely solo i'll miss this goated Flashback. I think we'll get the conclusion as last chapter of the year about this flashback so we'll have maybe 2 chapters left. If i'm right next week will be break

Edit: Ah what is interesting - Rocks already predicted in Chapter 1158 in his fight with Harald, what the WG (Imu) will do to the Giants.

@Kanelbullar I agree. I think people aren't empathizing with Harold and the reality of his situation at all. He obviously knew there was some bad blood in the giants past, and that they can be violent which is extra threatening to the rest of the world of weaker, smaller people. The WG has it's issues, but most of the world signed up for the same blind obedience for their nations as well.

Even though he met Mu, I don't believe Harold had much of a choice at that point either. I feel like there is still something important that we're missing since it seems we will be returning to the present without seeing Harold's death unfold. Part of it could also be that Oda wants to finish this story in his lifetime so he chooses to be brief with certain things. (although he still tends to draw out unimportant scenarios)

this is so fucking good man. and i don't think i've liked a new one piece character as much as loki in a long time. even panels where he sits silently behind bars is so good. i really hope we see a lot more of him. ida is not someone we knew for a long time, but her death still hits as seeing how she influenced the people around her and even warmed loki's heart. poor guy harald, his whole deal has been doing unintentionally doing wrong things, with the best intentions. now full circle back, oda cooked.

I'm assuming Imu did the same thing he done to Saturn. Stole away Harald's immortality, which effectively killed Harald and everyone not understanding what was going on blamed Harald's death on Loki because they didn't know Harald signed a deal with the devil.

Im having a hard time believing that only the giant kingdom have the mark of immortality. There could be more, the wg have been around for 800 years afterall.

So Loke will be a key for killing immortal beings? If he actually kills Harald (maybe IMU will end up killing Harald).

Shanks could have helped Harald see the light and realize he was being fooled all along, no? Maybe the circumstances didn't allow him to worry about other people's problems.

This is such a sad chapter, Oda you did it again. Oda has literally killed off four mothers in this arc, including Rocks's wife Eris, as she died from an unknown cause. Ida passed away from the poison, and everyone was mourning her, including Loki, who was locked up for avenging his adoptive mother.

Harald finally met Imu and was given the Depths Convenant. Harald thought that Elbaph would finally join the World Government peacefully, but he was dead wrong. He was being tricked and manipulated by Imu. Imu could even control his actions, forcing him to create an army for the world government. Imu wanted Harald to create an Abyss at Elbaph so the Holy Knights could teleport there. That has to be connected to why Gunko and Shamrock were able to arrive at Elbaf through the Abyss.
