What was your happiest time watching anime?

What was the period of time when you consider you were the absolute happiest anime wise (it can be right now of course, and I don't really mean what was the happiest time in your own life, only anime related, but you can mix both I guess).
For me, well, Idk, I've liked a lot all of my time watching anime but if I had to choose only one single time it would either have to be smth like Winter 2022 when both Attack on Titan The Final Season Part 2 and Demon Slayer Entertainment District Arc because the sheer expectation for those Sundays was unmatched (and they actually delivered every time, which is crazy), but I think Winter 2021 is still my happiest moment overall, because not only 3 of my MAL favs actually released on that season (which I find insane), but the best Attack on Titan season also did and I just recently started uni (so I had a lot of free time) and was watching a lot of anime outside of seasonals as well. I could probably add watching Steins;Gate and Wano.

Okay, so there's this anime called Shirobako. It's an anime exploring the behind the scenes of how an anime is made in general. It follows a staff in an animation studio and the 2 anime that they make.

Now I won't go into spoilers much, but lemme hide it just in case.

Mild Spoilers warning:

And that scene was such a joy for me. I think it was at that moment that I really fell in love with anime and started to appreciate the medium more after that.

Probably my entire time watching JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (all parts), it had been a long time I had felt such level of thrill and excitement to watch the next episode.

Another one would be during my time watching Tonikaku Kawaii. It was so wholesome it just made me really happy. It had the same effect on me as Iyashikei anime have on many other people. I'm not really a fan of "dedicated" Iyashikei anime, so this comes the closest for me.

And ofcourse the time when I finished all the Pokemon parts (all episodes) after having access to internet. I only used to watch Pokemon on TV in a scattered manner (due to broadcasting limits), but then I could complete it all chronologically and I loved that.

Back when I first got into anime around lockdown.

Got to hole up in my room instead of getting pressured to get out and socialize, having a mountain of stuff to explore and enjoy in this new medium. Still had a job with decent pay, got to just watch anime and relax after a long day of work. Got some family to try out anime too, watching many of them together and talking about them.

Always. Every single time I watch anime I am filled with joy and thymos.
"Chimp in state of nature never jerks off, but in captivity he does, wat does this mean? In state of nature he’s too busy, to put plainly. He is concerned with mastering space: solving problem of life in and under trees, mastering what tools he can, mastering social relations in the jockeying for power and status. Deprived of this drive to development and self-increase he devolves to pointless masturbation, in captivity, where he senses he is in owned space and therefore the futility of all his efforts and all his actions."

2006 to 2013 was the happiest period of my anime watching life, from 13 to 18 years old. Lots of great shows I'm still nostalgic about: Shakugan no Shana, Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu, School Days, Toradora, K-On!, Durarara!! and Mawaru Penguindrum. My anime hype actually died out around the time Attack on Titan came out, and I consider Aku no Hana as my last happy memory of that time period.

Love Live Superstar. Episode 11. I never thought any idol anime could impact my life so hard, but that slow realization of what the show's message was after seeing Kanon respond in a way I never expected an anime shy girl to is something I'll never forget. It's still weird that the single most surprising moment I ever saw in an anime was her singing on an elementary school stage, but I'm all for it.

Probably when I began watching Angel Next Door for the first time, I didn't expect much from this anime at first especially when it's animated by a mid-tier studio - but man, its heartwarming story and wholesome romance have made me smile a lot in the end.

I guess emotional sincerity outweighs flashy representation when it comes to romance anime.

@Zarutaku Same for me, but Z. Walked home from school as fast as I could, got a soda and a bag of Doritos and turned on Toonami. I remember being so excited on a specific day to do that. Not exactly sure why. I think I was home before anyone else in my family, so I was just hanging out alone watching anime and eating snacks as a 9 year old or something. What a time to be alive.

Personally I have two:

2008-2012 - Getting into anime proper, kid/pre-teen having fun watching battle shonen and rom coms. My memories of watching One Piece, Dragon Ball, FMA 03/Brotherhood, Ippo etc are memories I treasure to this day.

2016-early 2019 - Getting back into anime. This is the period I started to actually branch out from my more casual battle shonen focused fandom. I watched a lot of very good shows in this period, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, March Comes in Like a Lion, Cowboy Bebop, Mushishi, Ping Pong the Animation, so basically most of my favorites now. I got into big franchises like Gundam and I started reading manga like Kingdom. The MAL community feeling was also pretty fresh, and it was cool discovering all these new shows/works.

I hope I can eventually have another "golden age of anime watching". Been enjoying it more again of late.

During covid, when i just started watching anime, when the Shaman King remake came out, summer 2019.If i have to choose i'd say the first year of watching anime,i didn't watch that many shows at that time,i think i only had around 20 shows, but i rewatched those 20 shows so many times in that year and it was such a fun experience especially for someone who's new to anime and eager to watch anything

@Cielord With you on that one. My personal favorites all become my personal favorites when they opened my eyes to new, cathartic feelings and hit really hard on an emotional level. It was like learning I could experience something totally new and unexpected with anime that I didn't think possible before.

I guess A Place Further Than the Universe would be my example---at the tail end of 2022, I'd just finished a year of fairly demanding work. During my week off, I paced myself and went through that show one episode a day because I genuinely couldn't handle any more than that. It was like every episode was uncorking some bottled-up pain/sadness that I wasn't even aware I'd been holding. I'd never had an anime watching experience be so intense and for so long before, and haven't since. I remember that show very fondly now!

@Rally- The first FMA for me. But I cannot really say. It seems back then, I would discover a wonderful show & just watch it. in 2001, it was Ranma 1/2, I discovered it at the rental stores ( streaming didn't really exist & I didn't have a PC that year anyway, having sold mine for needed cash.).

Pretty mixed
Sort of between 2008-2016 and now

Of course during my early years there was so much to discover, but as time went on I got into currently airing anime to be part of the conversation, but as time went on newer shows started to not really do much for me, between i think... 2020 to 2023 I was pretty much in an out of loving anime and not being interested at all, I was so desperate to be part of the community I grew up in, but as time went on things changed so much around here, and anime did too, so so drastically and so so quickly. The small community I once loved was now so unbeliavbly massive, and I just didn't fall in love with the current stuff in the same way seemingly everyone else was.

Flash forward to 2024 to now, I started rewatching shows I grew up with, slowly but surely reviving my love for anime. I tried a few new shows here and there but just couldnt stand them apart from Tengoku Daimakyo.
Wondered if I was only interested in rewatching what I grew up with, so as an experiment I started looking for anime I'd either long forgotten or hadnt watched yet, all specifically from the 2000's and 90's.

Right from there I fell in love with anime all over again. I don't get to watch it nearly as much as I used to, I don't really have a community of people to talk to either (I'd love to build one and talk to people more but anxiety and lack of time...), however right now I've discovered so manyy forgotten gems and wonderful shows that have everything I always loved about anime in the first place. I think right now is the happiest I've been watching anime in a long long time, and I'm enjoying it and appreciating more than I ever have.

I don't think I ever fell out of love with anime as a whole, I fell out of love with new shows and the direction the medium was going, and struggled to accept that the long gone days of the old community were so far from present time, and never coming back. I miss it, truly if I could go back I would. But anime from that time period will always exist and for that reason I've rediscovered my love for anime and for the first time in a while feel genuinley happy sometimes.
Love can sometimes be magic. But magic can sometimes...just be an illusion...

2019 was when I felt I had the best quality and quantity in terms of what I watched and the rate I watched it at. Around that time I had seen a lot of comments online about how people would add legendary anime to their watchlists but never watch them, so I made it a goal to watch a lot of the greats. Most of my favorites come from around that time and it was when I got a lot more into the community in general (I was more of a casual in 2018). The seasonals (Attack on Titan S3P2, Vinland Saga S2 and Kimetsu no Yaiba season 1 all airing at the same time, plus all the peak new shows from the year before) made it exciting to get into watching airing stuff as well. In general, 2019 was one of my favorite years, so I could be slightly biased, but it does feel like I've never recaptured that balance. I watched more during COVID, technically, but I don't think the shows I watched then were quite as good. With college, I focused mainly on seasonals while watching something from my watchlist every now and then, which while a reasonable system, didn't really live up to how I watched stuff previously.

There are classic anime I still have to watch, but nowadays I'd rather pace them out. So while I could decide to watch a bunch of classic anime all at once, I'd rather not. I'd probably just rewatch old ones I've already seen if I went that route. Plus, I already have a decent number of seasonals and a few classics that I started and never finished, which are de facto dropped but I might pick them up again eventually. Feels kinda wrong to start a non-seasonal when there are so many others I have to get back to.

Anyway, I think that feeling of discovering something new creates a sense of rose tinted glasses for a fan to any medium, of when they look back on when they first got into it. Though, getting into another medium and introducing myself to its greats could be a similar experience.
