I mean, when did you start watching an anime that you choose yourself, knowing that it was an anime, watching it one after the other?

I started watching anime on Y TV in Canada way back in 1995 on cable television. I started watching anime (online) in the mid to late 2000s. It is easy to find anime online. Look it up on Google (or some other search engine).

When I was a kid I watched Dragon Ball and Inazuma Eleven. Afer that I didn't watch anything for years and years until a cousin of mine recommended Attack on Titan and Food Wars. We watched several eps from each of those two in his house and then I just continued them in my house because I really loved them. This was around 2018-2019, but in mid-2020 when COVID was at its peak I fully decided to enter after watching Death Note. I watched a lot of things in like 6 months and then I discovered MAL, created an account and started to really get into the community as well. Luckily enough I have every snigle anime I've watched on this platform.

I actually watched the Death Note Live Action movie on Netflix and saw all the backlash online on how it was so bad compared to the anime, so I decided to watch the anime :)

I started buying anime VHS tapes at Suncoast Video in the 90s (Slayers, Ranma 1/2, Tenchi Muyo, etc)
Prior to that I had to rely on Americanized versions on broadcast tv (Star Blazers, Robotech, Voltron) & really wasn’t familiar with the word “anime”, though they still stood out as different from other “cartoons” on tv at the time.

I got into Pokemon and then saw some shows on Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon with similar art aesthetics and decided to watch those too. Before you know it, I was watching stuff Dragon Ball and then after learning Crunchyroll the floodgates opened and I just tried a bunch of random shows having a large library of things that I could watch for free (with ads) on my Wii U back in the day.

I watched Pokemon all my childhood - then when I was around 12-13 my friends "pestered" me to watch Fairy Tail. I gave it a shot, fell in love, completed it faster than them and watched the rest of the series as it came out weekly. Later I remembered that few years[?] before my friend showed me the 1st episode of SnK so I found it and watched it... then I had a break and a big Creepypasta phase, during it I stumbled onto Kuroshitsuji my 3rd anime, then Tokyo Ghoul and well... the rest is history.

1998. I was seven when Pokemon, Digimon and Dragon Ball started airing. pretty sure those were the first anime that I perceived as such, although I had been watching anime before that. I remember having a whole bunch of Nils Holgersson VHS tapes when I was 4, and I literally cannot remember anything before that, so I have been watching anime longer than my memory reaches.

I discovered anime quite accidentally. As a child, I used to watch cartoons on TV as usual, but one day in 2013, I came across The File of Young Kindaichi airing on Animax TV and it caught my attention (though I don't remember it very well at this point). The thing which caught my eye was the difference in artstyle and the plot (serious, no comedy) from common cartoons. I didn't really know that it was called "anime" at that time, but after a few months, I started talking about it to a classmate at school who also knew about it and I learnt the term "anime" from him. I also learnt that Pokemon (which I was already a fan of) was also an anime, which made sense to me because Pokemon also had a continuous plot rather than being purely episodic. I started getting more and more interested in anime, but could only check Animax for watching it back then. Eventually, when we had a smartphone in our family in 2016, I watched more of them and discovered series like Naruto, Death Note, My Hero Academia, etc.

Naruto was on netflic which really opened me up to what anime was about. I knew something was different about this show, even though I had watched Pokemon and Yu gi oh in the past. Eventually when I got hulu, I learned what the entire medium was and started from there. Hunter x hunter, haikyuu, sword art online, black clover, opm, my hero were some of my starters.

While I did watch some anime beforehand like Pokemon and Dragon Ball, I didn't get all into it until the peak of the pandemic.

School was very disorganized (to the point where finals were cancelled) and I couldn't go out of the house at all. I was bored, didn't know what to do with my spare time. So, I decided to get more into anime that my friends liked such as Naruto and One Piece.

That's how I got to where I am today.
If I had to choose between One Piece and a girlfriend...I think I'll go with One Piece

Honestly I wish I could remember how I found out about anime. It wasn't through my peers. It wasn't broadcast on any TV channel we had. All I know is that I started watching when I was 14, in last year of middle school.

I had always looked up to people who had anime avatars and signatures, so around 2012 I joined a sort of Twitter clone made for anime fans, asked those people where to watch anime, and etc
That year I only really watched 4 anime, because I was fine with just being next to the people talking about it because of the sense of community.
I took it more seriously in the two following years.

Friends introduced me to manga, in elementary school. There were various library copies of Yugioh, DBZ, Inuyasha, Naruto etc that we read. We had one day, where you could read comics, and outside of the one guy who had a spiderman comic, everyone else was reading manga. Manga seemed cooler than just reading traditional books, so I picked it up. Before that, I had only watched Pokemon, as a kid, and not that much at that point. I got more into it after, reading manga for the first time. Pretty sure the first manga volume I read, is the one where Android 19 and 20 fight the Z Fighters. I had literally no context for anything that happened, though was kinda shocked how violent it was for something so cartoony. Eventually, I wanted to watch Dragon Ball so a year or two later in like Grade 5/6 I found the original Dragon Ball and started watching it.

I saw Sonix X as a kid because I liked Sonic, but after that I think I became vaguely aware of anime as a thing from Youtube videos talking about it and random series I'd find reuploaded in several parts per episode like Himouto! Umaru-chan or Kotoura-san. I think I watched quite a bit the one time my family had Netflix? And sometimes I'd use Crunchyroll since they had free stuff with ads. I kinda just watched anime wherever I could find a series for a couple years until I started using MAL to find stuff like 2 years ago.

My father bought me a (bootleg) Death Note DVD because I told him my friend group was starting to talk about it and I wanted to watch too. I got obsessed straight away. I can't remember how it developed but I think the first anime I chose completely on my own was Bleach after seeing t-shirts with its characters in an event. It was around 2009 so they were absolutely everywhere.

Had already watched a couple of anime before this based on suggestions from friends but the first one I picked on my own was Death Note. It was trending on Netflix and came up on my recommendations.

Before all that, I grew up watching Doraemon after school as it was airing on TV, but I don't think I considered it "anime" back then. It was just another cartoon, along with Oggy and the Cockroaches, Courage the Cowardly Dog, and Phineas and Ferb.

I'm using Veracrypt to hide my anime. Anime can very easily be mistaken as real p0rn (even though it is fictional and not real content). Best play it safe, and encrypt your anime files. Nobody wants to be in possession of anime files, which can easily be mistaken as real p0rn. Even though anime is fictional and not real.

My family switched to a new cable provider with an anime channel. The Anime Network. I watched most of it's library, every week i'd watch the new releases. They had good stuff too. Strawberry Marshmallow, Azumanga Daioh, HighSchool ofthe Dead, Bakuon.

That's where my anime fandom started, i used those shows to catapult into others and look into more anime. M
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

1990s I watched DBZ on toonami like most kids. But in the 90s I was also shown a lot of these weird mecha anime most people never heard of and even were bought toys for them. Brave Express Might Gaine and Legendary Brave Da Garn were two of them.

I would watch dubbed anime on toonami in the 2000s. Even buying Zoids toys and Gundam Wing gunpla.

By 2006 I was watching Eureka 7, and then downloaded subs via bittorrent. Basically. Eureka 7 was my first pirated anime, and I watched it half dubbed then subbed. Then I discovered haruhi maybe a few weeks later.

YTV. People at the time hyped anime for being deeper than US American cartoons (i.e. more serialized storytelling and slightly darker themes than the relatively static cartoon characters and plots that dominated US television at the time; i.e. not a very high bar to clear), so that got me interested.

I guess for the specific interest I mention in my bio, Cardcaptor Sakura and Full Moon o Sagashite* still influence a lot of my tastes even if I'm no longer the target audience for those series. Wouldn't necessarily say anime had better female characters necessarily (Helga from Hey Arnold exists), but most shows similar to Cardcaptor Sakura in American cartoons (e.g. Mummies Alive) had boy leads, so that was special for the time.

*Amusingly, I still subconsciously consider it Fairly OddParents for girls, well before that show actually got a female lead.

I was 11 or so. My cousin bought a VHS with https://myanimelist.net/anime/1089/Macross__Do_You_Remember_Love during a vacation abroad. It was dubbed in Swedish with Finnish subs. Neither of us spoke Swedish but my cousin understood a little Finnish so he kinda sorta translated to me what happened (probably by inventing half of it - don't remember the details, it was over 30 years ago). Science fiction was my favourite genre back then already so this title pushed all the right buttons. Then https://myanimelist.net/anime/3969/Kagaku_Kyuujo-tai_TechnoVoyage was aired on TV.

As for most people from my generation, I was introduced to anime by Pokemon and Dragon ball Z. Then we got Gundam Wing on tv and from that moment on I knew I love 'these Japanese cartoons' (I was 7 or 8 years old so bear with me). As a kid before watching anime on the internet, I also watched Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Beyblade, Medabots, Crayon Shin Chan (one of my alltime favorites). I also remember that for some reason my parents were watching the 1995 Ghost in the Shell movie, but this was in the early 2000s. They're not anime fans at all, but it may be one of those cases where an anime film leaked into the 'generation population' that doesn't watch anime. I remember Spirited Away being a huge deal.

In the winter of 2023, I worked at a job with a very long "working day" - 34 hours, and about half of this time I needed to "just be there".

At the same time, our enemy destroyed a significant part of the electrical generation, so there was very little electricity (and the Internet) for the day.

Therefore, to kill time at work, I needed "something" and this "something" became anime thanks to a video I accidentally saw on YouTube.

Over time, the electricity supply was eventually restored, but I was already hooked))

Anime/manga started out as a mere curiosity adjacent to my cartooning/webcomicking hobby. I had friends in a comedy troupe who got into the voice-acting business, so that helped win me over. I didn't really seriously get into it until last year, when I first registered on MAL and saw all the different list stacks that caught my interest.
