Well, I guess at least that adds some novelty to this adaptation lol. Not a big fan of musicals but now I'm more curious about this movie.

This got me super-interested now. I haven't seen a single anime musical, and I have no idea what to expect.

I can respect that they went in a bold new direction rather than doing a plain re-adaptation.

Makes sense given there's a musical of this put on by Takarazuka Revue, but I'd be lying if I said I expected this since I've never seen an anime film that was a musical before.

I wondered if it was like being performed at the Takarazuka Revue.... I don't think the songs used there could be used in a movie, though.

Ah, so the topic owner @Lucifrost didn't see the movie!

I've seen other people on twitter who went to the previews and they said it was more like an Indian movie, not a musical, to be exact.

Huh, heard they scrapped quite a lot out from those skeptical about the new trailer, but the musical part is new to me.

If this movie shows up in theaters and won't ruin the original manga and anime from the 70s, then I'd totally buy a ticket or two

Oh. I actually enjoy watching musical movies. But somehow I have this idea that is one of the most hated genres by the general public.
I haven't read the manga but I was excited about this new adaptation. Although from the beginning since they announced the staff I had my doubts about Sawano Hiroyuki being the main composer, not because I don't like his music, I actually think he makes great pieces when he works with Kohta Yamamoto and the songs he makes are good to, my problem was that I wasn't confident with him working for a historical drama, since I feel like his strong are more action series and now the whole movie turned up into a musical.

I love Broadway musicals! But for sure I've never seen an anime being a musical, only idols singing their songs or a song here and there in other series.
I don't know what to expect, but I hope it's a good one! I don't know anything about this anime, other than it's a classic.

Well obviously they’re cramming an entire 80 chapter manga into a single film so a musical is better than a rushed mess that’s got no gimmick

I felt unrefreshed after seeing the thread here, so I went to see this production even though I wasn't planning on seeing it.

Probably most people who have never seen a Takarazuka Revue review would consider this production to be a musical or musical-like.

Unfortunately for me, having seen multiple Takarazuka Revue reviews, it's hard to say for sure that it's a musical. As a mere musical, I thought Takarazuka Revue was more complete.

I thought it was a musical + Indian movie + music video added together and divided by 3. Also, I thought there were some scenes that were a bit like Revolutionary Girl Utena.

In fact, I went to see it after seeing “Ryoma”(https://myanimelist.net/anime/38882/Ryouma_The_Prince_of_Tennis_Shinsei_) a few days ago, which has already been mentioned in X as a similar movie but not a word about it in this thread, and I thought this was the most similar in atmosphere, including the way the songs were used in the play. However, the CGI in “Versailles” is not used as explicitly as in “Ryoma”.

Takarazuka Revue was also mentioned in the staff roll, but the songs used in Takarazuka Revue's performance of “The Rose of Versailles” were not used in this movie.

I don't know how many spoilers I can give away, so I'll stop writing this much.

@Fario-P
I went on the second day after the movie was released and there were so few people coming to see it that it was to the point of worrying me, but maybe you are the type of person who will like this movie.

... in full 3D-CGI with Iseri Nina as the unbearable brat Marie Antoinette and Momoka Kawaragi as Oscar Francois de Jarjayes!

So it is not only a musical but they cut Du Barry?! That’s beyond absurd. She’s one of the most compelling in the early parts and her rivalry with Marie Antoinette is essential to the early narrative. The audacity of removing such a crucial character is staggering—she's not just some side figure but a driving force in shaping Antoinette’s development, court politics, and the overall atmosphere of Versailles.

This decision only highlights how misguided the film’s approach is. Versailles no Bara isn’t just about Oscar and Marie Antoinette—it’s about the intricate web of power, status, and personal rivalries that defined the era. Du Barry is the Versailles drama in its purest form. Cutting her out completely is like rewriting history in the worst way, stripping away some of the most deliciously tense and scandalous moments that made the story so captivating in the first place.

Pair this with the anachronistic music, and the entire production starts to feel like a shallow, modernized spectacle rather than a respectful adaptation. No matter how gorgeous the film looks, if it fundamentally misunderstands what made Versailles no Bara so enthralling, then it has already failed.

As someone who has never watched the Roses of Versailes, this movie was really confusing with its fast time skips but i guess its a movie so i can understand it somewhat. Either way i think the movie was pretty good but you can tell that character depth fell short due to cuts i assume had to be made. I will watch the old anime or read the manga to have a better comparison.

Interesting take that might result in a really decent movie. The old version, way longer in length (obviously, since it's a TV series) will still be there for everyone wishing to see more plot details or character interactions. Remaking it in a movie format would have been risky with all necessary timeskips or simplifications, unless said movie was handled in a different way than the original show. Musical format may work perfectly fine in this movie's case.

@ZXEAN I don't remember when I saw a musical anime last time, if I ever stumbled upon a genuine musical anime at all. I'm excited as well! Funny enough, I'm not a fan of live-action musicals in general, but I don't mind seeing musical-like scenes in animated format, or animated musicals. ;D That's why I can't wait to see this movie.

I have been recommending Wansa-kun to everyone I see expressing an interest in anime musicals. Unfortunately, it hasn't been fully subbed in English.

Are there any other anime movies that are musicals? I imagine that anime musicals are quite rare as musicals have to be created precisely for the medium itself; no one is writing a musical in manga format.

There's a thread on Anime Discussion board: Are there any Musical Anime? Maybe you can find some leads there.

Reading through the thread made me realize that Inu-Oh is kind of a musical. Most of the musical numbers are performances that the characters put on, so it felt different from my idea of musicals where characters put their feelings into singing and dancing.

Regardless, it's a movie that's worth checking out, IMO.

I've already seen the movie version of “The Rose of Versailles.”

On top of that, as I mentioned earlier when I write my opinion, it is similar to this one I saw a few days before I saw the movie of The Rose of Versailles.
https://myanimelist.net/anime/38882/Ryouma_The_Prince_of_Tennis_Shinsei_

Both “The Rose of Versailles” and “The Prince of Tennis” have live-action musicals separate from the TV anime, and both works are in a category where they are reasonably well known as musicals.

So it was not surprising to see an anime movie that is a musical.

Ahhhhhh, until I found out what the movie was about, I had an expectation that it would be a two-parter or a trilogy.

Well, in fact, the movie's box office earnings were not very good,
I'm glad they didn't make it a two or three part movie. Also, the age range of the actual audience was not girls, but mostly middle-aged women who have already reached adulthood.

They are worse with stories and pacing than Mappa even...
